Using Reaper's ReaTune To Create Vocal Harmonies

  • www.homebrewaudio.com/using-re... - You can use a plugin, called ReaTune, that comes with Reaper (audio recording software) to create vocal harmonies from just a single track of singing. Personally, I think actually singing all the harmonies yourself (or having other singers or course) is the best way to record vocal harmony. But the ability to have a computer help you with that can be useful, especially if you have a hard time with singing harmonies. Typically, programs dedicated to creating harmonies are expensive. But if you have Reaper (which only costs $65 after a 60-day free trial), you already have what you need. I showed one way to do it with a Reaper plugin called ReaVoice in the video here: • Use Reaper's ReaVoice ... In today's video, you see how to do it with ReaTune. Sure, the resulting harmony sounds a bit "computery." But it isn't bad for free:). And it might be just the right cool effect for some folks. It's certainly worth knowing how to do. This video is an excerpt from our course, Harmony Recording Awesomeness www.homebrewaudio.com/harmony-...

    Ken, just an hint.
if you duplicate the track, (instead of creating a new one) together with the FX, you can save time since the Reatune is already tracked.

In my case, I wrote the song. So I know what the notes and chords are. But even if you didn't write the song, it's usually just a matter of humming a note and hitting a note on a piano or guitar to find that same note. If you don't have an instrument, you can download a free piano virtual instrument called 4Front Piano. then load that up in the FX button in Reaper and use that to match the note.

Great tutorial! Just for sake of noting extra possibilities and a more satisfying results, it could be done to sound more natural with some thoughtful use of *ReaVoice*, *ReaTune* and *ReaPitch* (with the *formants*) and *automation envelopes*. It would take a some more time (I don't think it would take very long though) but I think it is still doable.
An example of what could be done is to:
    1. Duplicate the lead track
    2. a. Use *ReaVoice effect* to create the harmony part (according to your tutorial on doing this). Select Elastique Solo as the algorithm (also for the other effects you would add afterwards).
_2. b. Alternately use _*_ReaPitch_*_ by adding it as an effect then as an Automation Envelope (_*_Shift (semitones)_*_), then edit the envelope points for variation in pitch._
    3. Add *ReaPitch* effects (if you didn't do so before) to track then add an Automation Envelope (*Formant adjust (semitones)*), then edit the envelope points for variation in formant (higher if it's too husky, lower if it is too much like chipmunk).
    4. Add *Reatune effect* with slower attack time; I would suggest 50ms. The aim is to do more fine tuning while preserving the natural sound. This step might even be optional rather than mandatory after the other steps.
*_Note:_*_ Elastique or SoundTouch Algorithms might help alot in achieving more realistic results. IMO Elastique Solo is the best bet, but you can try the different algorithms and parameters according to which works best in the use case._

Nice tutorial! The result sounds really really phasey, which happens due to the tracks being identical, but after processing, going just slightly off. If this is not what you're looking for, you can time-shift the backing tracks by different amounts, so that all of the tracks are more clearly in different phases. This will make the phasing much less prominent, and turn it into a nice chorus-like effect, which often suits this kind of stuff better.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording

But as I say, the best way to record harmony is to sing it yourself on a different track, or have someone else do that. I just wanted to show ways to get harmony using software. Sometimes people WANT the robotic sound as an effect. Or they just want SOMETHING, but have trouble singing harmony themselves. So this is just an alternative way to do things. Instead of putting 20 in the attack put 100 or 150 instead for a more natural sounding vocal

I think I'd get someone in to help... pitch correction is the devil work :)

This method is admittedly difficult. I just wanted to provide ways for people to have harmonies who couldn't sing them and didn't want to shell out hundreds for pitch software. Perssonally I prefer to sing all harmonies.

Too robotic for me.. I think you should lower a lot the volume of the harmony, then it would be nice and soft. But thanks for the video

I always recommend actually singing the harmonies - with real voices - if at all possible. This example is just for those to have another tool. It won't sound good on everything, of course. Real harmonies are better always, in my opinion. If you still need to use software, there are paid programs that sound much better. Here is one example - th-cam.com/video/ENjDrG0yinw/w-d-xo.html

You can do this easier with Reavoice.

I agree, which I why I believe the best way to do it is to just overdub and sing the harmonies yourself if you can. Not everyone can do this. Here is my video on this easily, though: th-cam.com/video/z-ZJPHnxhZY/w-d-xo.html I only added a few lessons on how to use software to do it for free, in case folks didn't WANT to try to sing themselves. The "good" software (like in this video th-cam.com/video/ENjDrG0yinw/w-d-xo.html ) is pretty expensive.

Good idea ==== but it does not work. It sounds awful. This is a very well produced video thought.

Thanks. And though it does "work" for what it is, you're right that it does not sound great. My preferred method is to just sing the harmonies. This was just one way to do harmonies with software and it's free. The paid programs like Harmony Engine do a much better job if you want to go the software route for this stuff.
