    The above excerpt from the course, "Harmony Recording Awesomeness," www.homebrewaudio.com/harmony... - shows how to use ReaVoice - an effect in Reaper audio recording software - to create 2 harmony parts from audio of the melody being sung by an actual human. The results are...interesting. As we point out in the course, the best vocal harmonies are the ones sung by real people. And it's usually faster and much easier to just sing them anyway. But there is interest out there in using software to create harmonies, so Lesson 10 in the course demonstrates how to use 3 programs: ReaVoice, Vielklang Instant Harmony, and Harmony Engine EVO. To learn more about the course, or to purchase it for yourself, visit www.homebrewaudio.com/harmony...

      Any vocal recording and harmonizing software advise for a poor music student?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest, I just use Reaper and sing all the harmony parts myself:-P. Reaper, which is perfect for a poor music student, since it's $65!) is how I record everything from voice-overs to full music albums (I've produced our last 5 albums using Reaper!). Don't know if you've seen this video, but I recorded the guitar and 3 of my vocals just using Reaper - th-cam.com/video/FfhKEp-GAKc/w-d-xo.html Most of the harmony-generator software programs are fairly pricey. I hope that helps!

      Thanks a bunch HBA. I'll check the video. Singing all harmony parts is a bit challenging for my bass voice.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. One other possibility - which I will make a video for real soon:-P - is to use Reaper's ReaTune effect to do something similar to what ReaVoice is doing, but without the MIDI and math:-P.

      Thanks for mentioning that! I hadn't thought of trying it since I honestly didn't consider ReaVoice to be a serious contender in harmony generation. But I'll give it a try. Thanks again.

      In addition to using a different algorithm I believe you could use the formant shifting function in ReaTune to make the harmonies sound more natural.

      Paul - on the track panel there is button that says "Trim" next to it. It's the "Track envelopes/Automation" button. If you click that, it will bring up a panel with all sorts of things you can control via an automation line that appears under your track. You click to raise and lower parts of that line to raise and lower whatever effect you have selected. Winston was suggesting using the Formant effect. You'll need to add ReaPitch into your track FX first. Then put a checkmark in the Formant boxes in the Automation panel. I should probably make a video about automation, huh? :-).

    If you know a C chord on the piano, the intervals translate to ReaVoice (the piano G will be the 5th of whatever the audio file is, the piano E will be the third relative to the audio file, etc.). This made it seem way more complicated than it really is, but still a good lesson, as I now know how to use a new plugin... thank you!

    Seems like a good time saver to work out harmony parts using MIDI before recording separate parts. In some applications the robot-like aspect would be hard to notice if the generated parts were mixed low as thickening rather than prominent harmony lines.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. I actually do that - work out harmony parts with MIDI. It's so flexible. If a chord doesn't work, just drag a note up or down. Yeah, you COULD just do this on a piano. But It really helps to hear the parts moving all on their own, and I'm just not that good a pianist (not a pianist at all :)).

    This is resurrection of an old video I know - also I have no idea if this was true back then, but at least these days you have reapitch, which has that formant shift feature you need to avoid 'chipmunks' and 'monsters' lol. You don't have the neat ability to set the harmony note with a midi signal, but you can always control the FX parameters with midi CCs. I don't see how this is more work than what you went through here. Anyone reading this in 2022 who wants to do harmonies with reapitch, try this; however many semitones you modify the pitch with reapitch, move the formant slider the same number of semitones in the opposite direction. You will get the most natural sounding harmony this way because effectively you are transposing the vocal how a real singer would - the formant frequencies remain the same across the vocal range.

    About the chipmunk quality, it has to be said that it depends on the default pitch shift algorithm, that is a trade off between quality and CPU load. *Much* better results can be obtained simply by switching the ReaVoice algorithm to an Elastique Audio one (which is embedded in REAPER, no need to install nor buy additional stuff)...

    • @Eichro
      @Eichro 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I wanted to say just that. Elástique should sound almost right.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eichro That's a good idea. I didn't [lay around with the different audio stretching settings.

  • @JasperManning
    @JasperManning 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it's easier to copy the audio to another track, split it up whenever there's a pitch change and then manipulate the clips pitch from the item settings (or make a custom action for semitone up/down, for extra comfort.)

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jasper Manning Well either way is pretty work-intensive and both have the ups and downs (no pun intended:)). With the ReaVoice way, it's super easy to change a note by dragging a MIDI note up or down. But the other way can work also.

    If ALL you had was the orig melody, then this would be quite useful. the chipmunk effect is hard to avoid unless you use special shifters that let you muck with that especially. Autotune is scale-aware and Melodyne. Those would prob be the best short of getting the singer to do the other notes. or another singer. Interesting tut.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Martin! You can certainly use this MIDI, as in this example, to trigger a connected MIDI-capable piano. So as long as the end result is that MIDI notes are being generated, I don't see why it would't work. I hope that's what you were asking.

    • @superconnie5003
      @superconnie5003 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well actually the question is this: in Logic and Garageband I can record
      a upright piano [audio,not midi] the select a soft instrument via a drop down menu and change this upright piano sound to e.g Steinway Concert Grand sound.Is Reaper able to do this?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin. You can do all the things you mentioned in Reaper once the MIDI is recorded. And you can record the MIDI by playing the music from an external keyboard or even playing the notes on your computer, or virtual keyboard in Reaper. But it sounds like your asking about "converting" audio to MIDI. I don't use Garage Band or Logic, so I haven't done what you're doing. But just to clarify, when you say you are recording an upright piano, is that an actual piano in your house that you are playing? And you record it into the computer via microphone(s)? If so, then those programs are doing an audio-to-MIDI conversion at some point. You CAN do that in Reaper also. Here is a link to the Reaper forum thread describing how: forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=184734&highlight=audio+to+midi I hope that helps.

  • @OfFormerFame
    @OfFormerFame 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reaper's ReaTune can output note changes to MIDI. You might be able to run that through a track to make the original midi, then copy the MIDI track into track 2 and start moving stuff around.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Of Former Fame - True. It's all just so much work to do it either way, to be honest. I'd much rather just sing the harmony part(s):).

    • @OfFormerFame
      @OfFormerFame 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but using midi is a good way to experiment with harmonies until you find what you like. The lack of formant shifting in the ReaVoice plugin annoys me though. You're almost certainly going to need some, why not add it to the plugin, or the ReaTune plugin instead of a separate ReaPitch. I'd want to be able to adjust the formant on each note like you can in Melodyne or Logic.

    If I have a MIDI file for the song I'm singing, could I use this method but simply import the MIDI files to be used by ReaVoice instead of trying to figure out the harmony pitches by ear?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually no, not directly. you DO need a MIDI file. But to get harmonies, you have to open the MIDI editor and drag the notes individually until they produce the harmony part you want. It's not the best or easiest way to create harmonies. But it is free:). So you COULD use your MIDI file. You'd just have to edit all the notes (dragging them). Does that answer your question?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would either need to already know the harmony part, or you could just experiment. Usually you'd already know it and would be using this to "record" the harmony parts. But sometimes you can get really creative just by experimenting. Try just putting one MIDI note against the entire melody line, stuff like that.

    Hello this question has nothing to do with your video but I remembered you actually responded to one of my questions before. I was watching a reaper tutorial video about file management and he had me messing around with preferences and creating back up folders. I did everything he said and now I can’t see any sound waves on my tracks. It’s just blank there’s nothing there. I asked him about it but he hasn’t responded and I can’t figure it out so I’m desperate. And yes I tried view show peaks. I wonder if there’s someway to go back to default preferences because he had me change so much I can’t remember what it was before. Got any ideas on how to get the sound waves displayed again?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith. Do you at least know where the files are? If so, and if I understand what's going on correctly, you might just be able to "Insert/Media File" for each track and navigate to the folder where the audio should be. It's not ideal. But it might be a way to rebuild your project.

    • @keithd.6712
      @keithd.6712 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Home Brew Audio I know where the back up files are supposed to be if that’s what you mean. I’m not at my computer right now so I’ll get back to you about that. Thanks for the response

    u could export the 4/8 bar midi of your main melody/chord, from your DAW,(FL Abelton etc) and just duplicate it across the whole ReaVoice track...

  • @RichSaculus
    @RichSaculus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Couldn't you change the Center to G4 and then select Scale Major on the midi editor so you get your intervals without too much pain.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rich Saculus Yes, Rich. You can do that by adding an effect onto the track (FX button) called ReaControlMIDI, which will allow you to "snap to scale." That would help, but again, takes some control away from you. All these things are tradeoffs. Thanks for mentioning that though! I could make things a bit faster if you use this method.

  • @ErickMcNerney
    @ErickMcNerney 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think with small intervals, it will work well, but when there are big jumps it just sounds awful. I assume it is just shifting the original track, so the closer the added harmonies are to the original note, the more "natural" those added harmonies will be.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think you're right about that. This is one of the drawbacks of the "free" method for doing this:).

  • @christoffelhendrickx

    I m a noob... how do u get reaper to record the harmony on the midi track rather than the external input? Thanks!

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you use that external mic to record the first vocal part (usually the melody), you use that audio (the first recording) to create the harmony on the 2nd track. Check out the video at time mark 1:57. That shows you how to "feed" the audio from track one down to track two so that the MIDI notes will use that audio to create the harmony part. You won't see any audio on track 2, only MIDI (little horizontal lines) in the MIDI track you added at about 1:40 in the video. Hope that helps!

  • @MainstepMusic
    @MainstepMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey awesome tutorial but I do have a problem. Even if I create a midi file,as soon as I release the button and don´t hold it down anymore the double or harmony stops and you can only hear the actual voice,not the Midi:

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you've created MIDI notes (the horizontal lines) that play at the same time (and last the same amount of time) as each sung note? If so, and you're sure you followed every other step, then it should work.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording

      +Martin Weeks the first thing to check is whether you have an instrument plugged in (I've made this mistake many times:-P). After that, check to see if you have Record Monitoring turned on. There is an icon on the track control panel that looks like a little speaker to turn Record Monitoring on and off. See if one of those things solves the problem.

      Done that...repeatedly. I got it to work once, then all of a sudden the connection got lost. I really get the appeal of Reaper having this function but the end product does seem unnatural. It would be best and faster to just sing and record vocal tracks over the original.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. That is exactly what I do. But there are uses for things like this that people sometimes want, and often they are expensive (Harmony Engine EVO, ZPlane, etc.). This is a way to show how to do the "artificial" harmony thing for free if you have Reaper, which is insanely affordable ($60 for the personal license).

      Good advice. Thanks.

    • @Deederrr
      @Deederrr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I did something to improve the sound, but instead of using Reavoice, I used Reapitch. Try it, by changing the formants (There are 3 if I remember well) it will sound a lot better. Of course it will sound robotic when you listen to itself alone, but in combination with the original and the rest of the instruments, it sounds pretty nice. Instead of making it like a MIDI, you need, I think, to change the pitch by moving the automation curves, but is nice. Cheers

    Very interesting. However, for most purposes a simpler harmony would work. For example, Soundtoys' Little Alter Boy was just handed out as a free VST, which allows formant (male to female) and pitch shifting with several presets. It's pretty functional. And of course, there are devices that can be played with a midi keyboard that allow for multi-part harmonies by playing chords, or single lines, such as TC Helicon. I agree with the author....This looks like way too much work.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Urbane Gorilla Oh absolutely! It's way too much work if you can do the singing yourself or pay for a better program. ReaVoice is at least free (if you have Reaper). I make that point that "real" harmony is preferable over and over in the course. I only included the demo of software-generated harmony due to the interest of several people. This was the free one. I also will demo Vieklang Instant Harmony and Antares Harmony Engine. Thanks for the tip on Little Alter Boy! I'll check that out and maybe give that a demo too.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can. It's just even harder than the above, which is already too hard in my lazy opinion:). The best way is simply to sing all the parts (or have others sing them with/for you). The next best way is to use good quality harmony software like zPlane, AutoTune or Melodyne. In the course, I show how to do it with the first two of those programs.

    • @owencoopersfx
      @owencoopersfx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simple answer is that this method used less tracks and processing power. You can certainly achieve the same effect using ReaPitch, but you'd need several track just to make one of these harmony parts. It's a trade-off though since with ReaPitch you'd have formant control to make it sound more realistic.

    • @galeanoj2005

      if you save the all mix parts resultl in one track and delete the original tacks you will not have more power processing, and save the parts in other place if you want to change in the future....I believe
