The Girl I Left Behind Me - British Army Song

- "The Girl I Left Behind" is an English folk song dating back to the Elizabethan era. It is said to have been played when soldiers left for war or a naval vessel set sail. According to other sources the song originated in 1758 when English Admirals Hawke and Rodney were observing the French fleet. The first printed text of the song appeared in Dublin in 1791.
This may seems weird but I dedicated this song to someone I once loved. This just reminds me of her everytime whenever I'm listening to this. It gives me that mix feeling of being happy and sad, yet somehow I am still eager to listen to it everyday. Even if she moves on from me, I really do want to tell her that I love her still.
You will get someone better ,who will make this song a new feelings with her ,and thus you both can listen together to this masterpiece in a new scene 😊
Holy crap this comment is doing weird thing to my emotions.
Plenty of fish, my friend. You'll find someone better one day
The fact that she moved on from you makes it clear she wasn't your type to begin with. Just your lonely mind playing tricks.
Hang in there
Relatable, however I've no idea if she likes me or not, perhaps fortunately.
You are not alone my friend.
The moment when the American military adopts this song after hearing a British prisoner sing it.
Well it's a pleasant song.

So cool to think that men sung this song about their wives/lovers on battlefields and was heard on Waterloo, New Orleans, Leipzig, Gettysburg, Shiloh, and The Iberian Peninsula
The British didn't fight at Leipzig.

For those making a sheet and planning to sing this aloud:
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la. I am lonesome since i cross'd the hill, and o'er the moor and the valley, such heavy thoughts my heart do fill, since parting from my sally. I seek no more the fine and gay, for each does but remind me how swiftly pass the hours away, with the girl I left behind me. I seek no more the fine and gay, for each does but remind me how swiftly pass the hours away, with the girl I left behind me. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Oh ne'er shall I forget that night, the stars were bright above me and gently lent their silv'ry light when the first she vow'd to love me. But now I'm bound to Brighton camp, kind heaven, then pray guide me and bring me safely back again to the girl I left behind me. But now I'm bound to Brighton camp, kind heaven, then pray guide me and bring me safely back again to the girl I left behind me. Her golden hair, in ringlets fair, her eyes like diamonds shining, her slender waist, with carriage chaiste, may leave the swan repining. Ye gods above! O hear my prayer, to my beautious fair to bind me, and send me safely back again to the girl I left behind me. Ye gods above! See?
Fact of the matter is, it makes no sense for them to say gods instead of God. Remember, it's early 19th Century Britain. The British Army, which is an army that fights for the Monarch of the most powerful Protestant Country at the time. So much so that he has the following Style: "George the Third, by the Grace of God, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Defender of the Faith." Now do I need to remind you of how the Holy Trinity works?
@@normalplayer7377 It was likely either written for a play or not meant in a religious sense. every recording of lyrics has it written down as Gods.
I think we can all agree that the men that sang this song really love their wives, take that feminists, there's a man that will die for his wife.
