I still can’t believe this happened, would love to hear feedback from people that were living in Soviet Union during this time or at this concert. Watching this retrospectively its amazing how this at one time was the height of coolness. Nowadays it would corny or cringe. I still love Billy Joel and his music. He will forever been in my humble opinion the coolest!
I think it's because he knew the people there wouldn't know what the lyrics meant,, so he mimed along for a lot of them things like pointing at his ears for "sound" or running across the stage for "driving a car"
I read it was because he had a (justified) meltdown on stage at a prior show and the Russians loved it and just thought it was part of the show, so he ramped up the crazy for the remaining dates.
I've been listening to this concert ever since I bought the cassette WAY back in 1987 & it is my fav of all of Billy's live performances. So glad that they FINALLY released this entire concert on CD becuz there are alot of great songs that were left off the original album.
Great film of the crowd.....the joy on their faces is palpable.....never would they have dreamed to witness a Concert of this magnitude.....and 4 years later the USSR would be just a bad dream for most of them.....
Well what's not to like about Billy Joel. He is amazing. He started off writing his own stuff. Didn't work. Went with the stream. That worked. He became a mega star. His songs are iconic. Sings in front of 50000 people. And always entertains. His band is euphorious his voice is amazing and his songs are to live for. I say. Long live Billy Joel. A true icon.

when american groups play in non english speaking countries, how does the crowd know what they are singing about?
I would presume that many of them spoke English, and something can also sound nice without understanding it
