Had the same panniers for couple o years and couldn't be more satisfied, in July had a Car smashing into the right one, my wife's leg was saved from being crushed by the pannier that sustained only a minor scuff, so not only waterproof and well built but sturdy enough to fend off a side impact with a mazda CX9 (the poor guy was so embarrassed by the way and praised the Bumot as well for avoiding a possible horrible injury! Well I purchased a replacement and used it during my last week Austrian tour, rained cats and dogs, and no water whatsoever inside!
Late to the party, but here are a few comments to add. I have the old style Bumot pannier system that was fitted to my Suzuki Vstrom 1000 and I just bought a BMW 1250 GSA. The BMW comes with the racks, no panniers and my choices look like either buy a rack from Bumot or buy the panniers like the ones you have. Obviously it will be much cheaper to buy new racks than buy new panniers and that is most likely what I will do. About Bumot strength, they are quite strong, this year on my way to Alaska, I was very tired and did not notice a low cement wall which my right side pannier box caught, I went down, aside from scratches on the paint, no damage to the box. In 2017 I was rear-ended by another biker on a trip (he fell asleep and ran into me) the bike went up and landed on the right side pannier, this time the damage to the box was more serious because it dragged on the ground and wore out one of the corners. It was replaced by my insurance company but I kept the old box, welded the corner that was ground down and I use it on a scooter, the box was not crumpled up and unusable, only worn from dragging on the pavement, the hinges still work fine and the box lid closes as if it was new. I have seen BMW and others beat to scrap from falls, not my Bumot cases, very stout. I don't know if it is because they are old, but some water does come in, I have tried to simulate rainfall with a garden hose, but no water comes in, only when they are on the bike does some water come in! I usually pack stuff that can be wet on the bottom and since I do not have the small lid bags, my luggage bags sit a bit higher.
Nice review. I gave up buying OEM luggage years ago. The beauty of after market stuff is you can keep it when you change bike, just buy a new rack, and move it over. I have the Givi outback trekker on my 850gs but previously had this on my last bike and it only cost £200 for a new rack to move it.
Bumot! Handcrafted in Bulgaria. For the discerning rider. Top of the food chain pannier products. Well done here Nick. You certainly did your due diligence in selecting such a well engineered system. Ride safe and ride often. Peace.
Nick, always a pleasure to follow your reviews. You have quite some products in common. I do have the original BMW side and top cases, however I have the soft panniers from Bumot. So I can easily change the soft panniers from Bumot on the BMW rack. I also do have the 58L Givi top box with the adaoptor plate, and I exchange this one with the original BMW top box, when I need to take more luggage. In addition, I am a big fan of the toolbox, I stuff it with a first aid kit, Tork set, tire pressure measure and Leather man. Keep it up, ride safe and I am looking forward to your next video!!
Cheers Kim. Many mentioning the Bumot soft bags. Please don’t make me buy more 😂😂👍🏻 glad you’re swapping out boxes. That gives me hope and looking forward to having reserved space for tool kit. Ride safe
I got the top box and I’m very pleased with it. The lid mechanism is brilliant. So much better value for money v the BMW variant. Even managed to colour match the bike as they do an Ice Grey colour :-) I also have the Bumot soft panniers. Great build quality. I bought the top box before the soft luggage. When I ordered the soft panniers I quoted the key number for my top box and they ensured that the key would match the locking mechanism on the soft panniers - excellent service!
Hi Peter. Yes, a few have noted that. As I watched it I thought, I did it that way, oh, and that way. In fairness it’s about the only way for all but the GPS but good of Bruce to link. That video is up about double in views the last few days 😂. Illustrious indeed 👍🏻
I’ve been looking at these as an alternative to my soft luggage for more on-road trips. I learned more during this video than all my research. Thanks Nick.
Hi Nick, thank you for your quick response, I have been in touch with Adventure Bike Shop and they assured me that the side panniers do clear the 58ltr top box. I have every confidence that you are right Nick. Cheers nick, will let you know of the out come, be safe.
Hi Nick I just took delivery of a set of the evo panniers great bit of kit,I like you have the Givi 57 top box I did have to make a 5mm spacer plate for the rear of mounting plate and two 5mm spacers for the front bolt holes this can be done with washers . Now the Bumot pannier lids open perfectly .👍👍👍👍
Great news. Randomly I was looking at mine Sunday and have two aluminium plates to cut to mirror the Givi one to do exactly that (3mm each). Glad you like the panniers, so far , so good here
Thanks for the review Nick! Just ordered new 1250 GSA with delivery in September so now doing my homework. This looks the business and living in Scotland waterproof is a necessity. Be well and ride safe Trevor
Thanks Trevor. I still love mine. Stretch to all the inner bags too as they really help organise and are great in and out of boarding stops. I get no water from rain riding. I gett a small amount when I pressure wash them on return. Still recommend. Enjoy 👍🏻
Excellent choice Nick and well researched. 45 mins taking about a box! Impressive! Excellently presented as usual, and thanks for the my little moment of fleeting stardom when you highlighted my comments! Ah fame at last. I’m looking forward to watching you collect your new mighty R1250 GS Adventure, I ride the 1200 version and it’s brilliant. All the best Nick and here’s some thumbs up to compensate for the Eejits 👍👍👍
Hi Nick, I purchased the Bumots for my GSA largely based on your review. Excellent review. Unfortunately, on my first outing with the panniers the LH pannier lock that secures the locking lever disintegrated when I gave it a quick ‘security tug’ with my forefinger! The locking plate just fell off the lock barrel. I made the adventure bike shop aware of the failure and when I gave them my key number they said “oh yes, they are poor US made locks” apparently there was a supplier change and the previous locks were a bit better. Adv bike shop managed to find 6 of the previous locks for me to replace my current ones with! Good service but my goodness, what lousy design. I had to use gaffer tape to stop the pannier unhitching in the meantime! Going forward, And for belt and braces, I have come up with a mod to make sure that if the lock fails, the lever cannot lift up. Parts are arriving today! I can forward pics and details if you’re interested. Cheers, Dave H
I think I said in the review the locks let them down but mine have worked well over the 10,000 miles I’ve done so maybe mine were the ‘better’ ones. Show me the mod when you have it the email is somewhere on the channel. Let me know here though if you could as I get so much spam on that email I don’t check it often 👍🏻
The Bumot luggage looks like very high quality stuff. Very detailed review and break down. Congrats on the new bike and I look forward to seeing it with the panniers.
Another great review Nick, thank you. When you asked in your last pannier video if people had any suggestions and I mentioned that RiderCam TV had done a review on the Bumot, I certainly expecting that within weeks you had come to the view they were so good. That's 2 detailed views so will be interested to see how they fit and travel. Max, Australia
Great review! Certainly not as premium as the Touratech Evo or the SW Motech panniers but being able to use the OEM rack that BMW forces you to buy with the GSA - not a bad setup. Lack of built in handles and a kludgy lid bag mounting system knock these panniers down the list in my evaluation.
Interestingly, while I'd looked at every Bumot video I could find, yours is quite likely the one that finally convinced me to go the Bumot route. MORE interestingly, yours is also the one I returned to for help with the installation (or "fitting" and "fitment" as you chaps like to say) of the accessory bits: the exterior case handles, and the retaining straps for the inner lid soft luggage. I received all of the parts and fasteners, but NO INSTRUCTIONS! I assumed everything would become clear as I worked through it all, but later I realized I'd mixed up the bags of fasteners and suddenly found myself thoroughly confused, and with serious doubts about what went where and HOW. NIck Hodge to the RESCUE!. Your excellent video, not unlike those incidents where tower personnel must talk a luckless passenger through an emergency landing procedure to compensate for an incapacitated pilot, YOU single-handedly brought us down safely! My boxes are now properly installed, AND properly accessorized. Thanks Nick, I owe you one. Next time you're in Las Vegas, the tea and biscuits are on me!
Thanks Nick. Excellent and comprehensive review, also appreciate the research you went through in making a decision. I had Yamaha (Givi Trekker Outback) cases on my Tenere, so checking if I can move those to Givi pannier racks on my Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Triumph use the same cases, but unfortunately their rack is slightly different and their branded cases have different catches accordingly. If not, will sell those and switch to Bumot instead. I like the idea of keeping the luggage and just having to buy a new rack with future bikes, especially since Triumph have modified their fittings to lock you in.
@ Nick Hodge 19:55 nearly spat out my G&T...."Maybe I didn't do my research enough" ;-) ;-) I think the 'simple key' is probably so they can use the same key for all the 'simple' lock fixings. IE the lock that secures the case to the bike, and the lock for the toolbox etc. No intention of buying a BMW or luggage but watched all the way to the end! :-) I think that Givi topbox will get plenty of use when you're touring! I was going to say I never keep any other keys on the same ring as my bike key anyway, then realised your BMW will be keyless... .Excellent review video and photography as always! Must have been a nightmare to edit.
Cheers Paul. So much in there. I can’t help but be ‘wordy’ either. I so want to make snappy 10 minute videos 😂. Thanks for watching to the end and don’t waste G+T for sure (my favourite spirit tipple). You should never say no intention of buying a BMW. I know many who have them who said that 😂. Editing. Yep takes me a loooong time, then it’s been published 10 minutes and you’ve got a ‘thumbs down’. I get not giving it a thumbs up, but a thumbs down. That’s just spiteful 😂😂👍🏻
Are you buying a new 70 reg GSA next Tuesday by any chance? No seriously, life's too short, good review and enjoy the new bike! NB. It's harder to hide bike stuff than shoes!!! (You mentioned that someone you know is worst than Imelda Marcos!)
Next week and hopefully you guys will get a look soon after 👍🏻. There’s nothing cheap about any motorcycling, but certainly not BMW. I’m very lucky. Think the only hobby more expensive is boating and multiple marriages 😂
Panniers appear to be a good alternative to the BMW option, you’ll have to ride through a storm to confirm waterproof. Saved yourself almost £3000 between bike and toys by purchasing now rather than 2021, wife should be happy with the savings and your foresight. Sadly for me where I live the £850.00 insurance prohibits a new bike.
Nick Hodge And not to be in the dog house! Might not happen but who knows. Enjoy many happy and safe riding years on the bike, might need a lottery win for the next bike. J
Oh Nick I was fine with the entire vid until you said (in your opinion) the quality is better than the Touratech equivalents. Strictly for the potential buyers out there and not to undermine your rationale for buying the Bumots I need to raise a couple of points before folks part with serious money on any system for their pride and joy. As you probably have guessed i went with the full Touratech Evo System with R1250 GS specific 'scaffolding' so biased is a word I'm trying to use sparingly here...😀 I know that BMW have their hard luggage from Touratech and rebranded and am not sure which Touratech range they source from (there are three I believe of which the EVO is their best quality) This is of course their flagship range of panniers and two size topcases sporting integral waterproof silicon seals, built in carrying handles, tactile one key latches and a superb easily accessible lever operated mounting system. There is a great difference between the three ranges but the EVO system IMHO is the nuts so would at least point prospective buyers out there to consider that specific system against similar systems prior to purchase I however think you've made a good choice with the Bumots and wish you well on your adventures. I've seen so many GS/GSAs with mixed luggage systems that clearly show the rider has done his/her homework and bought what's best for them. Good well presented vid as per so thanks for taking the time mate 👍
Yes. It’s possible I dismissed the Touratech too early by their connection to BMW and the poor value for money I feel that offers (suffering much from BMW branding). I find the varios on my GS at least offered features to cover that additional cost and in fairness they’re good luggage too. Just feel they don’t suit the GSA. I’ll take a look next time I see someone with Touratech. Great comments so thanks and ride safe 👍🏻
Excellent review Nick, don't think you'll be disappointed with them. I had really good service from the Adventure Bike Shop when I got mine and other bits as well. For me the accessories you got for them was very interesting, your review demonstrated them much better than on their site. I think my cards may be taking another hit! :-) Ride safe Rich
Thanks Rich. I guess it all adds up but if you take the whole list of accessories. Inner bags, lid bags, handles, reflectors and rubber top pads I reckon £300. My three inner bags from BMW were £375. These are really good quality accessories by ‘feel’ 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Did you find the BMW inner bags incompatible with the Bumot panniers? I also have the BMW oem inner bags which I would like to use in the Bumot panniers as well.
Excellent review, and Bumot the best choice (unfortunately their website just freezes!). The mounting plate for the Bumot top case looks far superior (steel I guess) to the Givi plate (my old Givi monokey top case is totally waterproof, just the mounting plate that is weak aluminium).😉
Great video Nick that contains a lot of information, both visual and verbal; well done. A couple of things I would like to pass on from my own experience; as I mentioned before, I have the Bumot side cases and the Givi 58ltr top box, all in black and they look fabulous together. I have the older Bumot Defender cases (as they didn't do the ones you have when I bought mine) and I have to say that yours look really nice. However, when I open the side cases, the lids are very tight to the big top box and only just open; your cases appear to have high corner plastic pieces (mine don't have them), so I hope yours will open okay. The other thing is that I also fitted the Bumot carrying handles to the boxes and when I fitted them, I didn't tighten the nuts/bolts up as much as I should have done and they allowed water to get in; I have subsequently tightened them all up and water is no longer getting in, so this is just as a word of caution. Really looking forward to seeing them all on your new bike, they will look fantastic. Cheers, Andy.
Thanks Andy. I did tighten the fasteners more than I normally would for that reason. Tempted to maybe dip them in mastic or threadlock too. I think the EVOs sit a little lower as a comment below say they open easily with 2in clearance. We’ll see 😂 I still deliberate where beat to fit the handles. I like the inside of the panniers but may do back of top box???? Watch this space 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I thought you would probably have tightened them Nick, just thought I'd share my own ineptitude :-) Look forward to your next video, you're doing a great job.
@@nickhodgeUK Nick. I have the Bumot Evos panniers and a 58L Givi top box fitted on a R1250GSA. I was also told they would fit, I did in fact confirm this with Bumot in Bulgaria. However, on fitting (using the same mounting plate as you) I found the rear corner pieces of the Evos, rubbed against the front corner pieces of the 58L top case. I got round this problem by manufacturing aluminium raising pieces 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear, raising the SRA5112. I now have approx 1/4" clearance each side.
Excellent Review - I went with the BMW Atacama (same as Mosko) and love them but $$$. I originally was looking for soft luggage that didn't need extra mounting hardware but unfortunately, it requires some extra bits but goods news it attached to the existing BMW adventure "scaffolding". The Bumots look great. I really want some hard luggage but dread having to take the Atacma hardware off.... AT least with the Bumots I can leverage the existing BMW "scaffolding".
Hi Steve. The BMW advantage is generally the fact the dealer has them fitted when you pick the bike up. I’m off put by the cost AND the top box is very small. About the smallest of the lot. The dealer intimated that in GSs most have the varios on but on Adventures few take the BMW ones now. Maybe they’ll change or update but I guess if they do it’ll it’ll be £££! Ride safe 👍🏻
Good in-depth review as always, you now have got me thinking about what I can add to my new GS on the 2nd September. Already ordered a fender extender on you previous recommendation. Hope to meet up with you at North Oxford Garage in the near future, (never met anyone famous). 🤣🤣
Hi Ed. I once sold Pam Ayers a moped when I worked at Mike Wheelers in Witney 😂😂😂 now she was famous (in fact I did Graeme Garden and John Hurt too). Ride safe 👍🏻
Great review Nick, full system in ice grey on my GSA Exclusive including toolbox. Riding with panniers in torrential rain yesterday and they never leaked a drop. The lid bags are really useful for bits and bobs when touring. Had them a year including touring in the Alps and I’d recommend them to anybody. The lid opening feature is great for sorting camera gear and my lunch. Having dropped the bike and damaged the plastic corners it’s great that you can replace the corners and the carrying straps are great. Found Cliff and the Adventure Bike Shop great to deal with. Agree with you re the keys but panniers much easier to fit with the lid open.
Thanks Ian. I’m happy with the ‘feel’ of my purchase. Seems like the practicality should match. So much of this is personal choice and opinion but these are a total u-turn for me from my original thoughts so I’m glad I asked 👍🏻😂 ride safe
Great job, and really good panniers. Very similar to my Jesse luggage, which are from the USA and I’m sure not available in the UK. Both are 2 mm thick and welded construction, so they should last a long time. I have had mine for 8 years and 75,000 km. Different locking systems, but only one key, which is mandatory. The Jesse system attaches from inside the pannier which has pros and cons. What I really liked about your panniversary
Cheers James. Frankly I liked Panniversary 😂👍🏻. Jesse was suggested but late on so I already had my head in a spin so not sure if they’re available here?
There’s your answer James. Available from the same place!! www.adventurebikeshop.co.uk/jesse-aluminium-luggage-made-in-the-usa/ (There is a slight down on Jesse name I suppose too here. It’s a derogatory term for a guy who never does ‘guy stuff’. “He’s a right Jesse”. That shouldn’t matter though 😂😂
Nick…just curious but why didn’t you go with the Bumot Top case? I have the Bumot side panniers just like yours and I am really enjoying them but was curious your mindset of why you choose to go with the Givi Top Box? Thanks in advance.
No. I have the Bumot top box. That’s even the catch of it in the title image for the video and I show fitting the backrest to it and so on. I have the Givi additionally although I’ve never used it 👍🏻
Ah. You needed to read the comments. It’s about 5mm. Put washers under the Givi frame and lift it to clear. Or just tip the Bumot box off its mount a little
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick, I wasn’t going to get the 58 litre box but the BMW one was so small I took the plunge. Only realised when I was packing for a trip to Scotland. Your solution should solve that problem, Thanks again 👍
Great video. One question - is there any particular reason why you put the carry handle on the outer side of the case while on Bumot website it clearly shows that the handle attaches to the inner (closer to the bike) side of the case? Thanks
Great video and I love the Givi box like you that it holds two crash helmets but I do think it will look too big without the panniers from the bag . They are all nice and the extras .
Not disagreeing Mark. If I’d have gone for the Givi system it was always my intention of buying both top boxes and of course swapping would be much easier 😂. Who knows how many times I’ll do it but the thought’s right 👍🏻
I'm still waiting on my Givi 58l trunk that I ordered over a month ago when I picked up my 21 GSA. I was hoping to catch a video of yours with the Bumot side panniers and your Givi top box so I could see what I'm looking forward to.
Hi William. In truth I’ve not used it as disappointingly by a few mm the lids of the Bumots don’t open. I’ve made some 5mm brackets to raise it enough and that works but not really been anywhere with a pillion to need to use it 👍🏻
I've applied my spacers, but I still await the shipment from Givi. On another note, I just had my break in service, but I didn't get the Bluetooth update. My system works great, and I didn't want to have it wiped just to set it up again. Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍👍👍
Have you stopped riding and so stopped doing these TH-cam channel videos. I wanted to see what your Top Box and panniers set up looked like but can’t find any more videos. Hope you are well.
Hi Trevor. I’m fine thanks. Just not many things left to fit on one bike and tour videos involve looooong editing and views are not as many. Not that I do this for a job. Just for fun. There will be one in a day or two that may surprise!!
@@nickhodgeUK I’m pleased your well, no worries I look forward to your next video. My BMW R1250 GSA comes any day and I’m copying a lot that you’ve done to your bike. Your very good at explaining stuff. All the best.
Nick, hello from Poland! Just to make sure - Bumots Defender Evo do work good with the plastic Wunderlich toolbox, am I right? I am thinking of bumots but dont want to give up on the toolbox. Also, are you still happy with yours? Thank you.
They are a tight fit with Bumots as the Bumots fit tight to the frame. I would rather have the Bumots than the toolbox. Those cases are superb. Also, you’ll see with the toolbox they are now advising removal of the splash guard as it can hit it. Never did with me over maybe 4,000km but I’d certainly not give up the Bumots 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Thank you so much. On a way back from my trip of Romania, I went through Prague where they carry Bumots and saw them in person - great impression. Buying them for sure. The toolbox comment made me think about it in a not so positive way... Thanks again Nick!
Excellent review, very helpful and many thanks for taking the time to film, edit and post this! Is it correct that the Givi panniers don't fit to the stock GSA scaffolding? It's very hard to figure that out from their website. In fact it seems that for stock scaffolding, the only choice seems to be Bumot and BMW/Touratech. Also, if you get time, would be great to have a review of these boxes in use, especially after winter. One of the issues with the BMW/Touratech boxes seems to be corrosion from salt on the roads, so would be great to see how these fare with their powder coating. Thanks again!
Thanks for the comment. You are correct. There are probably some others (including soft luggage) that fit to standard ‘scaffolding’, but Givi, SW Motech do not. For Givi you need the monokey racking (PL5108CAM). If you want them keyed-alike too you will need to order a lock set for the number of cases/boxes you have. I’ve been on tour with the Bumots and certainly they performed excellently in some pretty wet weather. I don’t ride much in winter so not sure I can be too much help there but we’ll see. I’m certainly very happy so far 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks for the reply -- useful information which confirmed what I thought on the GIVI & SW Motech fitment. Best wishes and have subscribed to your channel!
Excellent review and the videos are getting better and better Nick! I already have the 58lt Givi Outback Trekker on the 2018 R1200GSA and I am considering the bumot defender evo panniers like yourself. You mentioned that you believe they will be able to open unobstructed. have you tested them now that you had them on the bike?
I have and unfortunately not by a very small amount. The Givi rack needs raising 5mm and then it’s ok. Otherwise it’s unhook top of pannier, tip and open
I enjoyed every single seconds of your video thanks for all info and good luck 👍 with your new panniers.my question is why you bought 2 topbox and....?
Hi Rob. Thanks. The two top boxes are total indulgence but the big box I feel is too big for day riding but too small for passenger/long touring. We’ll see if it ever gets used 😂
HI Nick, good choice with the panniers, not sure if your right with the handle strap I mounted mine on the In side on the top of the lid !!. Meaning I can use the handle to pull open the box lid and also when lifting the box on and off the rack you have a better grip/ handle of the situation as the box will drop once the lock has been released so be careful. Also would you not put the washer on the inside of the lid to stop the nut possibly pulling through the box lid if you carry the box by the strap with a lot of weight. just a thought not a critic !. Robert
Hi Rob. I am considering that on the top box for the reason of opening and lifting off. The washer made sense on the soft surface. It’s how they are on the Bumot site too. Not sure you’d pull a nit through 2mm ali?
Hi Nick - Steve here (60) in Oregon USA - My GS 1250 Adv HP is about 3 months old and delighted that you got a 1250 as well now I can watch and learn. Do you know what you have planned for purchases in the future? Do you prefer my questions over TH-cam comments of having another preferred way to Chat?
Hi Steve. Comments here are great. All the bits from my old 1250 have got to get back in the GSA and I’m upgrading some of them so the Gen 2 CanSmart will go in and also will be adding B6 brake lights to the D4 spots and sound bomb horn I have. There will be lots of other small farkles along the way. Maybe a screen, hugger and hopefully some rides and stuff I take on tours etc. Be good to have you around. Ride safe 👍🏻
G'day Nick!!! 2 quick questions....did I miss your telling us if your shoei tec 2 helmet (single) fit in the EVO top box? I only ride one-up so dont need to be worried if 2 fit. And second question....how are the handles holding up? Are they easy to carry with the straps Pity? Pity they don't put a rubber round grip-handle to make them easier to carry. Cheers!!!
Hi Fred. Yes single helmet fits in the Evo fine (with room around and above). The straps hold up fine as in truth you’re rarely carrying the boxes just taking the bags out 👍🏻
I pick up my GSA this tuesday, I really like the looks of these and they are less expensive than the BMW branded cases. And you say these do fit on the factory side racks?
I think I'd use the givi outback as my regular case, it'll match well with the Bumont panniers. I'll be interested to see your video fitting to the bike.
Wow Nick what a fantastic detailed review. I'm considering Bumot soft and hard for my Tiger 900 Rally Pro and you have certainly sold me on their products. How do you think the powder coating will stand up to the wear and tear, ie rocks, bushes etc. Cheers Dave
Well. I can tell you with both in my table the Bumot are better quality, but that Givi box for those occasions 😍. There’s something to be said for the lightness of the Givi but build of Bumot for me is one up. Ride safe 👍🏻
Hi Nick, I’ve gone for the Bumot panniers also, when you mounted the carry handles did you move yours from the original position (hinge side) to the other side? I’ve gone for hinge side up to now but wondered whether I was seeing things or if there was a reason behind you swapping sides? Great review as always
Hi Dave. No I’ve got them mounting side (inside). My reasoning is they’re tight in the mount (thankfully) and more so when gritty. Have the handles there for me have better purchase to get them off and also more control once they have way from the mount. Also it does help lift the lid when opening on the hinges. Only caution this way is make sure at least one catch is engaged on the lid before detaching from bike
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick, makes sense for opening the lids, my non exhaust side is quite tight also, don’t know whether it’s adjustable ( the box mounts) mine is a 2021 GSA. Thanks for your prompt reply 👍
As always Nick, a great indeth video, just got my R1250 GSA, looking at getting Bumot panniers and 58ltr top box, do the Bumot panniers open with the Givi Top Box on please?
Disastrously no!! By about 5mm. You have two choices. 1) just dislodge the top of the pannier from its mount and open the lid 2) get some spacers and lift the Givi top box plate by the relevant 5mm. I have to say though. That Givi box is huge!!! I’ve not used it yet. Bumot, still very happy particularly the box/inner bag combinations. Ride safe on the new bike 👍🏻
Thierry. These weights are empty but do have additionally fitted… carry straps, lid bag straps and rubber pannier protectors on lids of all. LH pannier - 7.3kg, RH pannier - 6.7kg and Top Box (with backrest) - 7.4kg. So the set empty is 21.4kg. They are heavier due mainly to 2mm material where many are 1.5mm. They use the existing BMW racks for the panniers and a straight bolt-on plate for the top box. The Givi for example need a different pannier frame and an additional frame for the top box (still an additional plate too), so these need to be factored into weight calculations. Still very happy with quality of mine. Think if I was doing a very long tour though (off road or unpaved included) I may go for soft bags instead only because they suffer less damage general when (not if) the bike is dropped. Hope this helps 👍🏻
Not sure if you’re still using the Bumot? Have you ridden with a pillion? How does the front/back position compare with the Givi? Curious to know if they ‘push’ the pillion forward? Thanks for the useful and informative videos.
I am still using the Bumot but cannot answer the Givi question as I’ve not used the box!! It’s just too big and swapping involves extra spacers to lift it the few millimetres to be able to get the Bumot pannier lids open (it’s that close). Having spoken to my wife I get this bike is more comfortable than the GS but she’s not sure that’s the Bumot backrest (over the Gs’s Vario box rest) but more the seat and position of ‘grab’ bars. We’ve probably only done 6 or so pillion days though with lockdowns and such. For sure she’s comfortable and doesn’t feel it pushes her further forward 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks. That’s really helpful. I’m going GS to GSA so in the same position as you. Bumot looks to be the solution. Appreciate the comprehensive review. Thanks
Hi Nick. Thx for your great review. Just a question, on a BMW GS 1250 does GIVI Trekker Outback 58 fit with Bumot Defender EVO panier? No issues to open the panier due to the Givi largest top case? Thanks again, talk you soon. Ben
Hey Nick, I'm where you were last year, taking delivery of a GSA in a month or two Covid permitting. I'm at the 'which luggage' stage and like you am tending toward Bumot. You mentioned in one of your other vids something about getting a helmet in your left side pannier. Can that be done in the Bumot 45L? I have a Flip Up Schuberth C4 Pro? In a perfect world I would have gone for the GIVI 58 Ltr TB but as the Bumot panniers will not open with that fitted? I intend, so far, to go with the 43L Bumot TB. The ability to leave at least one helmet and preferably 2 in luggage is an attractive one. How are you getting on with your Bumot luggage and accessories so far, any nasties involved with ownership? Cheers Tony
Hi Tony. I’m still very happy with the boxes. I can’t get my Neots here in the pannier due to the width of the sealing lip. You can get one in the top box of course. The Givi does stop the Bumot panniers opening but you have a couple of choices. Just tip the pannier to open, raise the Givi bracket 5mm with spacers to clear. I have the Givi box which takes two lids but not really used it 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Wow, speedy Gonzales. It's supposed to be a holiday, you should be out on your bike....😂. Mmmm. The 5mm raising sounds very interesting. Do let me know how you plan to do that or when. I'd be very interested to copy your example. Regrettably, I have the mechanical nowse of a Neanderthal....and hands to match. Hopefully I'll be in UK to pick up the bike early May (Covid permitting. I have to travel from Austria. Long story I live mostly in Austria but am a Brit) and will visit Adventure Bikes Store in Suffolk to pick up a shed load of farkles including the panniers etc. Stay safe and well Nick TTFN
I hope the seals are better than the genuine BMW Mottorad supplied with the new 2020 GSA I bought 2 months ago. Never had an issue with any previous bikes I have owned but this one is disappointing. Last time I ride it was raining. Opened panniers yesterday to find mould on spare gloves, hat and other items which were dry when put in.
@@nickhodgeUK It had a puddle in the left pannier and I had a cloth in lining the bottom of the top box which was very wet. This also meant my Nav6 and 3 x cardo bold headsets along with 6 D hanger ear pieces were sitting in wet in the top box. Never had condensation or wet inside boxes like that on a bike before. My last bike did 70000 miles over 6yrs in all weathers without any damp. Have taken them back to BMW Mottorad but they are already saying they are unaware of this issue. I mentioned that quite a lot on FB GSA page saying they have experienced it, even drilling 3mm holes in the base of the pannier, to a reply from the staff member of 'I don't believe blog pages'. We will see what happens but I have already been pre-warned that if they replace them they will not cover the cost of the rubber lid covers which cost approx £70 from NN.
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick I thought I would give you an update. Having returned my boxes to BMW Mottorad last week for warranty investigation for leaks they have replaced all my boxes today and included a free set of BMW liner bags. So although initially disappointed they have restored my faith. Hopefully these will be better. Thank you to Maidenhead BMW for your help.
@@stuartmcgifford3286 Good news Stuart. Nothing BMW does should not function as expected. It is a premium product at a premium price. So glad they came good and thanks for recording that
Looks great Nick! I’d looked at the SW Motech stuff before going with the BMW (Touratech) boxes. I really like Givi top box you’ve gone with. How are you getting on with the new GSADV?
I love it of course!!! It’s had a couple of teething issues but all the things I wanted it delivers. The extra range, despite fuel stations everywhere is a joy. Our tour recently was much more relaxing as I only bothered every 2nd or 3rd stop. Bliss. Just so you know, the kids on the Bumot panniers do not QUITE open with the 58L Givi box which is a shame. You’d be fine as I think the Givi and Touratech allow the lids to come fully off the panniers or long-way opening may help although strain the hinge. I’m going to try and lift the box on spacers by the 5mm it needs maybe as that box would be useful sometimes 👍🏻
Great video Nick 👍👍👍👍. I’m looking forward to see if the Bumont will still open with the Givi box on, as I too like the idea of a larger top box. Did you ever consider using soft panniers? (kriega, lone ride etc)
I’m certainly hoping (and sort of led to believe) it will but watch this space. I hadn’t considered soft panniers but can see the advantage regarding both safety and damage to luggage if you’re doing some serious touring with rough terrain
Hi Nick, how did you get on fitting the back rest to the top box? Drilling into the box to fit the backrest, does this still keep the top box water proof? Great video on your three day Wales trip.
@@flyman912 and an ‘x’ of masking tape stops the drill bit wandering. Light press and let the drill spin. Once it’s made an initial start then take all weight off drill and put in full speed. That way you’ll get a clean hole with little burring 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK Thank you for your advise Nick on the preparation of drilling the holes in the top box, will let you know how I get on in fitting the back rest.
I think soft panniers are a good choice if your doing true adventure riding off road as they generally sustain less damage and with their soft nature so does the rider from trapped legs and such but my riding is 95% road 👍🏻
I have pretty much the same Bumot pannier set up on my GS Exclusive; great bike and great kit. However I'd be interested to know your experience of the dimpled rubber mats. I found mine peeled off at the edges after a relatively short period and I ended up stripping them off which, incidentally, resulted in blemishes to the top box lid. Fortunately I'd only fitted the rubber mat to the top box so the panniers are ok. Anyway, please let us know if you have any issues.
Hi Frank. I would say not as they are standard zips not the ‘rubberised’ ones you often see on jackets and tank bags. The boxes do seem to be though so I’m confident of the ‘pairing’ 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK thanks! Yes, they look like high quality bags for sure. I just thought in the event of a crash and a bent in the case, which could compromise the pannier’s seals, you might be better of having waterproof inner bags, too. I just bought an R 1250 GS and drove 200 km in very cold weather yesterday. Totally enjoyed it! I am basically fully benefiting from all your experience and will definitely buy the Bumot cases, too. I am planning for a big trip from Switzerland to.Thailand next year, via Central Asia, Himalaya, Tibet and China.
@@SoundmanCH hi Frank. Sounds Fantastic. Do lots of research. On a long trip where there may be dirt road riding and therefore drops. You may want to consider their soft bags too but for sure I’m really happy with mine. Ride safe
HI. Thanks for the thoroughly review! Top! One question: In the end, can you use the Bumot side paniers with the Givi Top case? Do you thinks that is a good combination? Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately no. The Bumot lids will not open with the Givi box on by a very small amount. The two options are 1) tip the relevant Bumot box slightly off its mount to open which is a bit fiddly 2) raise the Givi plate by about 5mm using spacers under the plate The side stays for the Givi plate can stay on with the Bumot top case plate so it’s 8 fasteners off and 8 fasteners on to change (about 15 minutes). That Givi box is huge though and I’ve not used it 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK With your comments in mind, I was looking to the 46l Trekker Dolomiti, which is 10cm narrower. Have you had any thoughts on this option? (though it's not much of a gain compared to the 43l Bumot...)
@@TheShadowVortX I’d say stick with the Bumot. The only reason I wanted the large Givi is for the odd occasion I have a pillion it takes two helmets. 3 litres is so minimal for the odd occasion it makes a difference I’d use my little tank bag and have a matching system which looks nicer for sure and the Bumot is still a box I’d recommend (I would recommend the inner bags too which work perfectly in both lid and box) 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK And sorry... one (hopefully :) ) last request: would you be so kind as to measure the max rear width of the bike from one edge of the side panniers to the other? Thanks in advance!
I wanted to buy the bags, the pannier racks and the box (later also the trio of rigid suitcases) for the africa twin 1100 adventure sports 2021 but despite the emails sent I did not understand the difference between the two shades of gray because they replied to consult the site . I think for them to sell or not to sell is the same thing. Too bad because I wanted to buy their products but I will have to look elsewhere. P.S. For example, they could propose to send me pieces of waste from the processing to see the colors well (I would obviously have paid to have the pieces of waste)
Hi Nick! Great review! I am interested to know what are your thoughts now after you own them for a while. Are you happy with them? I am about to buy the same system in a few weeks
Have you tried the givi trekker top box with the Bumot defender evo boxes ? Do the lids open ok , I have same top box and was unsure if lids would open on Bumot defender evo panniers .
No it doesn’t. By about 5mm!!! Looking to lift the Givi rack by doubling the spacers. You can of course just tip the Bumot panniers off their mount a little but it’s a pain
@@ethestillman not quite. I wrote to Givi (they were very unco-operative) but made it clear that even their panniers can foul but that their pannier lids come off fully for use with that box. However I’ve seen people fit them and because they open longways they can be eeked by 👍🏻
Nice presentation, I've fall for this panniers, just need to know if I can fit my modular helmet in that EVO 45lt.....could please send me the measurement of the wideness of that lid entrance..... thank you. Cheers
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick, thanks for your reply, if we are talking about the same pannier the side 45lt no need measurements I use the M dizer helmet. Thanks a lot for the info Nick. Cheers
@@duartevilhena5023 Duarte..... screech of brakes!!!! Sorry I misread. NO. A full face helmet of any size will not fit in any pannier, due to the lip. Sorry I thought you meant the top box. Please confirm you understand and sorry for misleading 👍🏻

Hi Nick, I did buy the Bumot pretty well as you suggested accessories wise and the quality has exceeding expectation. That said I would like a bigger Top Box and wondered if you'd managed to get the Givi/Bomot combination working? Cheers Tony
Hi Tony. I have but it’s a total pain. You have two options 1) Tilt the pannier you want to open just off its mount 2) Raise the Givi mounting plate 5mm on all mountings using extra spacers/washers The second option will allow clearance to open the panniers without tilting. I don’t use the Givi at all now as it is also huge and so far I’ve not needed the extra space. It is a shame though as it’s just millimetres wrong. Also the side braces of the Givi rack can be left on with the Bumot plate so swapping the racks is 8 bolts off, 8 bolts on so about 15 minutes
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick, Mmmmm I will think on. Am off on a two month tour down to Greece, Turkey then north bound across Georgia, some of the 'Stans' Russia and back home to Vienna. Am having fun planning luggage for the GSA. About 20k Kms give or take Camping pretty well all the way. Will keep you updated GIVI and uggage wise, thanks for your help as always. Regards, Tony
That’s an interesting question. What I will say is they’re more robust than most available as they are made of a thicker steel. If you are likely to drop the bike frequently (e.g off-road) then soft luggage may be better for you as that flexes rather than deforms 👍🏻
How much? Jesus Mate you could have bought another bike for that. I hope you get your monies worth and they get plenty of use. For now I'll stick with the Vario luggage on my 1250GS.....
Well. In fairness if I was never sticking with the varios on the adventure and you take the indulgence top box off then my luggage set with all accessories and toolbox was quite a bit cheaper than the three BMW boxes so as far as new luggage is concerned I still feel pretty good value? Plus as grandparents I’ve bought pushchair ‘systems’ and they don’t even have an engine!!! 😂👍🏻
Sorry have to say from the pictures they do appear to strongly made, but the welding appears to be agricultural in finish. Not the best I have ever seen !!
Well. The corners are the worse but there’s very little to see on the long seams. Certainly better than others I looked at that were only riveted or bolted plates with sealant (like the base of the Bumot box. The welding I see looks good and strong for sure 👍🏻
That’s very encouraging and glad no people were hurt most of all. Continue to ride safe 👍🏻
Thanks for adding the comment. Mine were good and sturdy until I sold the bike would recommend still 👍🏻
Nice review. I gave up buying OEM luggage years ago. The beauty of after market stuff is you can keep it when you change bike, just buy a new rack, and move it over. I have the Givi outback trekker on my 850gs but previously had this on my last bike and it only cost £200 for a new rack to move it.
Yes. Have to try and give up spending £1-2k in new luggage every two years for sure 👍🏻

Good news Jose. Very happy with mine. Ride safe 👍🏻
Very comprehensive Nick. I noticed that TeapotOne gave you a shout-out the other day for producing another first class video. Onwards and upwards!

Hi Simon. And I still love it. Well built and solid. Heavier though of course
Ordered some yesterday from Adventure Bike Shop they look excellent.
You’ll be happy with them Simon. So miss my top loading panniers. MYbe consider the pannier pads for the top. Stops scuffing?

Cheers Max. Yes I watched their video which helped. Looking forward to getting them on next week and hoping the decision is right 👍🏻
Great review! Certainly not as premium as the Touratech Evo or the SW Motech panniers but being able to use the OEM rack that BMW forces you to buy with the GSA - not a bad setup. Lack of built in handles and a kludgy lid bag mounting system knock these panniers down the list in my evaluation.
They were great during my ownership. Certainly miss top-loading panniers on my 1600 now 👍🏻

Ray. Not sure I deserve all the credit as I never lifted a driver but thanks for a beautifully worded comment. You’ll love the boxes 👍🏻
Glad you liked it Tahir. Still happy with my Bumots 👍🏻

As you probably have guessed i went with the full Touratech Evo System with R1250 GS specific 'scaffolding' so biased is a word I'm trying to use sparingly here...😀
I know that BMW have their hard luggage from Touratech and rebranded and am not sure which Touratech range they source from (there are three I believe of which the EVO is their best quality) This is of course their flagship range of panniers and two size topcases sporting integral waterproof silicon seals, built in carrying handles, tactile one key latches and a superb easily accessible lever operated mounting system. There is a great difference between the three ranges but the EVO system IMHO is the nuts so would at least point prospective buyers out there to consider that specific system against similar systems prior to purchase
I however think you've made a good choice with the Bumots and wish you well on your adventures.
Great video. Confirming my choice of Bumot for my Tiger. Wonder if we're long lost relatives, too haha.
Still highly recommend. Riding with them now in the Pyrenees absolutely cavernous. You’ve perpetually had ‘s’ added to your name too then? 🤣👍🏻

Hi Ernie. Thanks for the comment. Not sure the Givi will get enough use to damage the plate although you’re the second that has said so 👍🏻
Great video Nick that contains a lot of information, both visual and verbal; well done.
I have the Bumot Evos panniers and a 58L
Givi top box fitted on a R1250GSA.
Graham Coghlan good info Graham. Thanks 👍🏻
Greet video looking at getting a gsa and looking at luggage systems very helpful
Thanks for sharing.
No worries Stephen. So far very happy although my now wet UK tour will test them more so watch this space 👍🏻
That should be I liked your panniers are the gasket on the lid and the branding and features of the inner bags. Good choice and good work..
Welcome. You will love your GSA!
I have the Givi additionally although I’ve never used it 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK ah gotcha…I’ll have to watch the rest of video I stopped when I saw Givi
Hi Nick, have you used the 58 litre box as well as the Bumot panniers?
Found out today the left box won’t open with the top box in place . Doh!!
Outstanding review as usual. Thanks !!!
Thank you Reli
Great video. One question - is there any particular reason why you put the carry handle on the outer side of the case while on Bumot website it clearly shows that the handle attaches to the inner (closer to the bike) side of the case? Thanks
I switched them after filming 🤣👍🏻

Great informative video. Looking forward to the bike coming. 👍
Thanks Andrew. That’s at least two of us then. Just over a week 👍🏻
The straps hold up fine as in truth you’re rarely carrying the boxes just taking the bags out 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK thanks!!! Btw....ill be looking for that video about your tool bag!! I think that's sooo important to fairly new riders!!!
I pick up my GSA this tuesday, I really like the looks of these and they are less expensive than the BMW branded cases. And you say these do fit on the factory side racks?
Yes they do. The box requires a plate that bolts on the existing racks but the panniers drop straight on beautifully. Enjoy the bike 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK awesome, thanks! I can’t wait to get the bike and start riding.
I think I'd use the givi outback as my regular case, it'll match well with the Bumont panniers. I'll be interested to see your video fitting to the bike.
Tough to know until it’s on the bike but it may be too big for every day. It’s probably lighter than the Bumot but it is big 😂👍🏻
Wow Nick what a fantastic detailed review. I'm considering Bumot soft and hard for my Tiger 900 Rally Pro and you have certainly sold me on their products.
How do you think the powder coating will stand up to the wear and tear, ie rocks, bushes etc.
Cheers Dave
Tough to tell Dave and maybe there’s other reviews? Just got back from my first tour of 1650 miles in various weather and all still good 👍🏻
I run with the Givi (Outback trekker) but if I'm honest those Bumot panniers look significantly better quality.
Hi Nick’ excellent review as it s difficult to get advises on this panniers.
Do you have the weight of those panniers ?
Thank.
Ben
Hi Benjamin. No they don’t but there are solutions. You will find some from me in the comments on the video 👍🏻
Hi Stuart. That’s a shame. So far so good. It wasn’t condensation was it??

Hi Nick how did you get on with the Bumot panniers. Can't make my mind up which to get either Genuine or the Bumot.
I loved them Keith. They are far more robust (but heavier) than the genuine (Touratech) ones 👍🏻

All done Nick, a bit tricky, thank you for your advise on preparation and drilling the holes.
Good review as always , but i was prefer if you can go with a soft panniers , why not ?
Ooh. Hope not Alan but I’ll be sure to let everyone know. Seemed very tacky going on. 👍🏻
Are the inner Bumot bags waterproof? Great review, as usual, thanks a lot.
HI.
Thanks for the thoroughly review! Top!
One question:
In the end, can you use the Bumot side paniers with the Givi Top case?
Do you thinks that is a good combination?
Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately no. The Bumot lids will not open with the Givi box on by a very small amount. The two options are
1) tip the relevant Bumot box slightly off its mount to open which is a bit fiddly
2) raise the Givi plate by about 5mm using spacers under the plate
The side stays for the Givi plate can stay on with the Bumot top case plate so it’s 8 fasteners off and 8 fasteners on to change (about 15 minutes).
It’s around 960mm. Slightly narrower than the handlebars and also narrower it seems than my old Vario panniers fully extended

No it doesn’t. By about 5mm!!! Looking to lift the Givi rack by doubling the spacers. You can of course just tip the Bumot panniers off their mount a little but it’s a pain
@@nickhodgeUK Think the givi rack makes the panniers wider as they don’t have the cut out for exhaust?
@@ethestillman not quite. I wrote to Givi (they were very unco-operative) but made it clear that even their panniers can foul but that their pannier lids come off fully for use with that box. However I’ve seen people fit them and because they open longways they can be eeked by 👍🏻

Nice presentation, I've fall for this panniers, just need to know if I can fit my modular helmet in that EVO 45lt.....could please send me the measurement of the wideness of that lid entrance..... thank you. Cheers
Hi Duarte. I have the Shoei Neotec modular and that fits fine. Still need measurements?
@@nickhodgeUK Hi Nick, thanks for your reply, if we are talking about the same pannier the side 45lt no need measurements I use the M dizer helmet.
Thanks a lot for the info Nick.
Cheers
@@duartevilhena5023 Duarte..... screech of brakes!!!! Sorry I misread. NO. A full face helmet of any size will not fit in any pannier, due to the lip. Sorry I thought you meant the top box. Please confirm you understand and sorry for misleading 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK ok thanks Nick, if you have the chance could you please send that measurement ? Thank you
@@duartevilhena5023 Yep, just done it and the entry is 419mm x 220mm Hope that helps?
Can you open the Panniers while using the Givi Big top case?
No. Not without either tipping the pannier or using spacers to lift the box a few millimetres. It’s frustratingly close but no cigar I’m afraid 👍🏻
good on the road, but i wouldn't recommend taking them off road, for that nothing beats soft bags/cases
I agree, never really thought of the off-road implications until researching but in fairness. I’ve done the odd rough track. That’s it 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK cheers Nick, i didn't dare stating the obvious, that it's a GS, it will never see the dirt, haha, i ride triumph tiger 800 xca and only dirt she's seen is a gravel driveway and some dust in the garage. too big, too top heavy, too busy trying to stay up right to enjoy the ride. small displacement enduro, or adventure bike is my weapon of choice for off road
Czarek P I’ve often thought of a single cylinder 250 for a bit of fun 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK can't go wrong with a crf, but if i had the money, then two stroke ktm 300
You have two options
1) Tilt the pannier you want to open just off its mount
2) Raise the Givi mounting plate 5mm on all mountings using extra spacers/washers
The second option will allow clearance to open the panniers without tilting.
If my GSA falls with these panniers, will they get damaged?
That’s an interesting question. What I will say is they’re more robust than most available as they are made of a thicker steel. If you are likely to drop the bike frequently (e.g off-road) then soft luggage may be better for you as that flexes rather than deforms 👍🏻
Well done, excellent review!
Thanks for being along again 👍🏻
Give it a Rhino coating n u r set for life of the box or even the bullet liner
Bit thin on the ground here in the uk. You can buy a treatment but seems like only one importer/dealer
Great video. Keep it up
Thank you Alberto
Does it come with pillion rest padding for the top box?
It’s an extra Bernard. I have it and the costs are at the end of the video (I know it’s long... sorry 😐) 👍🏻
