I had quite a similar experience on my all-expense paid, government-organized study-abroad program in China. Though clearly not as extreme, our stay seemed oddly catered to us as well, at several points. We were of course shown the best parts of each city and area we stayed at, but it could not all be hidden. On our way to a southern city, and the city we would spend most of our stay at studying, we took a bullet train that flew through rural areas filled with things like rice farms. I had to look away several times from the window because I would see children not only working in the fields, but bathing in them. When we got to the city, there were barriers set up that attempted to hide crumbling and impoverished areas. After talking and bonding with many of the Chinese students there, some of them opened up to me about the reality of it all. The whole trip was actively attempted to hide and paint over the blatant poverty and hell that occurs to most of their people. But I learned something, and it is something still worth remembering forever: they really are not that much different than how you and I are, here in the West. In fact, many of them knew more about certain aspects of American culture, like basketball or music, than I ever did. They appreciated a lot of the same things that we do, and they are simply just people, like you and me, who live under a very oppressive government. Here's to hoping that relations can be repaired again with China and that their people can get the care and support that they all desperately deserve.

North Korea isn't communist. What it was mostly modeled on was the japanese imperial occupation regimes and the chinese warlord period martial micro-dictatorships. Communism serves little more than slogans and iconography. Whether the regime should be considered post-communist or merely a politicallt unique totalitarian synthesis is still debated.

Oh yeah, I saw that at 3:40
im the 100th like!
Didn't see one overweight North Korean... Only one exception, The Great Leader, but in fairness, a 25ft statue, can add ten pounds!! 😂
Speaks volumes...
Yea...because they are starving to death...
Yeah because they don’t have any good you fuckin mut. Acting like then being malnourished is a good thing hahaha

Went right over your heads.
It’s now 2022 and I’m just here to remember when vice has balls to do this kind of journalism
Teletubbies made it to north korea 8:39
Actually 8:43
it's amazing
I laughed so hard when I saw that.
I was just looking for a comment saying something about it...lol
lmao
I really like the vibe of this guy. He just has no fucks to give.
They keeping saying 1968, 1951 and shit, i thought they believed it was year 105.
Kavas oh yeah, weird. Guess they were trying to speak the Imperialist language of Brit......America

This is true, they were probably showing off for the Americans.
Yes after Kim jong il death this documentary is old so they still used normal years
"One day we will be re-united"

@@donovanburkhard he has so many wives
These blokes have balls of steel. Filming quietly even when told off by angry guards and laughing at the threat of gross insensitivity charges while STILL in North Korea. Brave souls.
the audio in the karaoke place is horrible
and the way they say "korea"... korear.
Sounds like they rented a cave
The British also have this habbit of pronouncing a as arr
@ I think the narrator of the propaganda video got his English lessons in Britain, or at least from a "British" teacher. You are are right about the British rrrrrr'ing about in all their words - and quite often, people learning a second language will create weird "extreme" versions of the language's quirks. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICARRRRRRR...
@ no, the south pronounce a as arr, like glasses, the south say glarr-sses
It sounds to me like they got their English lessons from the Swedish chef on the Muppet show
Have you notice how their English speakers try and mimic American English Rather than say British?
I feel like an English accent wouldn't come natural to most native Korean speakers compared to an American one.
The person in the video narrating always throws in a jab about Britain which is pretty annoying
@@cratarata2278 bit sad, innit

Great doc. I hope Mr. Lee and his family are allright. this may have compromised him if the NK government percieved it as a lapse of duty.
Kevin Bock exactly what I’m thinking :(
Why you worry for Mr Lee? Mr Lee ok you American you no worry for Mr Lee just send Mr Lee some Russian vodka

I like how in the DMZ North Korea has their air con/heating units made by Samsung.
Samsung, a South Korean electronics company.
Nice.
HAHAHA good observation
North Korea is the best place to go in a zombie apocalypse because they have all that food they do not eat and it is heavily guarded aswell

They make no goods, so they have to buy everything from outside their borders; their only export is violent anti-American rhetoric.
ghostofdeletekey they also make meth

It’s sad you can see the genuineness with some of the people shown here, and yet none of their skills will ever get used to its fullest potential because of a Communist regime called North Korea.

This is the best TH-cam series I’ve ever watched. I’ve never been interested in North Korea… until now.
My exact sentiments
I wonder what the North Korean citizens will be like if they get to go on a week tour to America.
They would run from the tour
They'd probably hide here, so that they wouldn't have to go back😂
Their heads would explode 😂
So indoctrinated they couldnt process the reality of the situation and likely return to what they've been programmed into familiarity.
Probably get assaulted by some "Diverse" Americans and want to go straight home.
Maaan seeing that guide pissed up at the kareoke night makes me nervous...like I hope he didnt get killed when this came out. Feel sort of weirdly certain that he did though
Yo, Mr. Kim said "military demarcation line" like such a bro.
Respect to this man for what he accomplished At the same time being mindful that the guards / tour guide and possibly their families could be in danger after all this.
