Grey's forced the BLM on us, I'm Black and how diversity is handled on this show from season 14 to 17 is awful and cringe. Maggie's speech to Amelia was uncalled for and irritating, why because she herself as a doctor doesn't do anything for Black patients or the Black staff unlike Richard who made sure the Black staff succeeded. From season 14 when diverse characters were introduced it was simply because of their skin colour and nothing of importance.

I hate this situation where "People assuming that a black woman is a nurse, not a doctor" as if being a nurse means that you're less intelligent, less hard working or even less privileged. I understand that this is about racism and not about profissional prejudice, but I just hate how much nursing is always diminished

@@MidgetBaeI'm just saying that I respect nurses as much as I do doctors because from hearing what nurses have said to me before is that they felt they did most of the hard work while doctors just gave the orders. And when they needed a doctor they were hard to find and sometimes wouldn't listen to the nurses. And the comment was talking about the prejudice against nurses.
Generally speaking, a nurse is less qualified and gets paid less than a doctor. This leads many to believe that they are less intelligent, do less work and are less respected, not saying that it’s right to think that way. The truth is, a doctor is on a higher level than a nurse. So yeah some doctors get upset when someone assumes they’re a nurse solely based on their looks
Honestly, a lot of people tend to think women are nurses though so I did wonder if that may be the reason people thought Maggie was a nurse. If it's a black man, people would usually think it's more likely he's a doctor than a nurse because people usually associate men with doctors and women with nurses.

In real life, this conversation will not feel natural. It will feel awkward and uncomfortable. It will feel like forced and out of no where. Discrimination, prejudices, and racism happen all day, EVERYDAY. It's common, what's not common is talking about it.

I love this scene and the fact that Grey's brought this up. I just wished they did it more naturally, it felt kind of forced to me. I don't know why but this seemed to not really fit into the flow of the rest of the episode and it just felt like the writers in the writer's room went: "hey! we need to do something before the mid season finale that has depth and meaning, why don't we let Maggie rant about white privilege?" Don't get me wrong it's an important topic, and this needs to be heard, it just didn't feel organic to me in this episode.

If you want to know, I'm white, but I watched it with my mixed race boyfriend and he was just as confused about the timing of it as I was. Again, an important topic, but I just think it didn't feel natural or organic in the grand flow of the episode .... the grey's writers are usually better with bringing up important topics in the episodes and making them feel real and not misplaced

Teaching kids that mentality to literally be afraid of cops or whatever the case may be it sets us back! I grew up around ALL races and my friends don’t understand what the problem is! As uncomfortable and awkward as this conversation was for them, I think Dr. Maggie answered with great class, and sincere wisdom. She was unapologetically blunt, but she was still respectful....and moreover, she was right.
As a black person, this scene confuses me. First of all, what lead Amelia to believe Stephanie thinks she sided with Jo cz she’s white? Like why? That’s s just so random, when I first watched the episode it took me a while to understand what Amelia was talking about with Stephanie. And I’m surprised Maggie didn’t ask her that question. People are missing the point... What I got from Maggie is that from her experience she has been dealing with prejudicial minds sets and ignorance from white people. She also said that she can't speak for all black people because everyone has different experiences... Plus she said it is not our place to make them feel better but it is up too them to check themselves and do better nect time.
Maggie doesn’t want to be asked about it, but expects people who (as she made clear) would never understand to know when they have messed up? If you wanna problem solved it takes communication from all parties.
I'm a white woman, so I experience both sides of the card- not wanting to be racist AND having to correct sexism. I constantly have to teach men online and in my life (including my Boomer-aged parents) about sexism, and I can tell you that it gets exhausting, and that part she said about making the privileged party feel better was SPOT on. I also understand what you're saying about wanting to ask questions. Maybe the trick is to tell the marginalized person you have a question and ASK whether this is a good time for them. Tell them you have someone else in mind to ask if they're not up for it, and leave it up to them whether they're able to do emotional work right then and there. There's a new practice going around online- asking the people in your life whether they have the mental-space/time/patience to take on your emotional baggage in addition to their own before you tell them a heavy story or ask for hard advice. Extend that practice to the members of communities you're trying to get to know. Also, be genuinely okay with them saying no and be genuinely willing to listen, and make those things clear in your initial approach. To paraphrase Maggie, that's just one woman's advice.
I get the message but considering this is a professional show that has been running for a decade and a half i expected it to be more natural, they brought it up in a sudden way and it felt forced , the writers should have done a better job
I am so glad Grey's filmed this conversation. As someone with lighter skin and a mixed ethnic heritage, I am well aware of my white privilege even within my own family. But sometimes, especially after observing the way people talk on the news and the internet... I get hesitant and worried about bringing up this topic in conversation, like asking questions will be offensive by nature.

I didn’t understand my white privilege when this came out but now with the civil rights movements with Black Lives Matter. I am ashamed that didn’t realize sooner that I have more privilege in this world due to my skin color. I wish more people would realized that and try to better our society by removing systemic and institutional racism.

I liked this and not at the same time. Firstly it wasn’t the place. The car park. I know I’ve had work conversations in the car park but this shouldn’t have been one of them. I mean they live together. Could have been done on the sofa or something? Also I don’t think there was anything wrong in Amelia asking Maggie she didn’t want a spokesperson imo. She wanted someone she knows and knows her to talk to her about things she doesn’t know or truly understand. I know I have done that with my friends and I think that’s okay because I know them and they just want to ask questions and have replies without coming off as ignorant to someone they don’t know. I’m not black but South Asian as I said before I’ve had conversations were friends who have ideas about cultural things for example boyfriends, marriage, food and I simply explained how it works for me and my family. They're trying to make it about race, instead of about how she feels. Which is what it is. It's a worry of hers. Most people need or want to reasurred about all sorts of things. It doesn't make it not okay just because her worry is about having offended someone because of race. And she totally wasn't racist. Lord. Also, asking someone their perspective on something, about their experience, something they live, (as a woman of color, or a person of color in general in this instance) isn't the same as, say, asking her something like, "Do you know (insert black person in question)?" just because she's black as well. Isn't the point to be aware and to help continue the narrative of change? She makes it sound like she would have been offended that she was being asked something about it because of her skin color. "Are you asking me because I'm you're sister, or because I'm yo sista?" Um, both. Isn't it super unhelpful to keep pointing out ridiculous shit like this? It takes away from actual issues, actual racism. There was no racism, actual or imagined. No micro-racism. Not even any bias. Just her worry that she was, simply because people are made to feel overly cautious and crazy about this subject.
Ok so I’m going to go off your profile picture and assume you are white (and if you are not, I apologize but you are still white passing so you have not experienced a lot of things people darker than you have. Just like I am light-skinned (not white passing), so while I have experienced a lot of things about being black, I have not experienced everything, as some things are experienced only by very dark-skinned people. It is fair to assume that ignoring race is going to be the thing that erases racism. It’s an easy thought, “if we don’t think about it, it doesn’t exist”, but in practice, it doesn’t necessarily work that way. I will admit that this was poor writing, there was no mention of race for the whole episode and then they stick this at the end for some kind of learning opportunity and progressive credit? I don’t buy it. BUT- I think the actual message out of context of the rest of the episode is very important. As a black person who has been on the receiving end of hundreds of questions inquiring about my experiences, the way to maneuver a new, more racially tolerant society, it can get exhausting, because it’s not just the same questions over and over again (I mean, it is)- but it’s also the emotional labor of making sure that the other person doesn’t feel like A Racist™️ when they leave the conversation, because that is an avenue for more reassurance and more of our time (FYI, we know you guys aren’t Racists™️, everyone has their racial imperfections, and calling them out so that you see them and can fix them for the future is important for progress. It’s tedious, but it’s important). So I think Maggie is right, don’t put that job on Stephanie, she’s already had a difficult day and reassuring a nervous white person is not going to rebuild a bridge, it just won’t. And you can totally talk to your black friends about race! Just be respectful of their time and mental state. Some days we don’t have it in us to walk someone through the complexities of racial relations, it’s difficult and generally emotionally taxing- and sometimes we just don’t have the time. So my suggestion is don’t just ask the question- ask if they have time/emotional readiness for the question, and emphasize that you have another person to ask if they say no so they don’t feel pressured. And really respect if they say no. Another thing I notice goes a long way is when a white person shows me they did outside research before posing a question to me online. Many socially progressive ideas are researchable online, and showing that you put forth effort into learning about someone else’s experience makes the conversation warmer, easier, and better to learn from. Maggie was kind of annoying here, she started to get defensive and look for the next racist thing Amelia is accidentally gonna say before Amelia even started to explain what she thinks she may have done. And I mean “I’m not a spokesperson” ? What is that? Why is it wrong to consult a black person on this issue? Obviously, being black and experiencing what comes with it- Maggie might be able to understand better than Amelia wether what she did was wrong or not. She could’ve just given her an advice and appreciate the fact that Amelia cares enough that she feels bad and turns to her for help instead of reacting in such a condescending way.
It's not wrong per say, but as a black person who grew up in a white neighborhood, went to a mostly white school and had mostly white friends, I can say that it does get annoying at times constantly being the "spokesman for all black people". I'm sure this is not the first time in Maggie's life she's had to deal with questions like these. And the fact is in many cases, it's not about a white person trying to be better, or it's more about them making themselves feel better. It's like "see! I'm not really racist!". Just comes off like they're checking a box.

You don’t have to be black to experience these things. Also I believe that as a mother to a black girl, she will probably become educated enough about racism so she could talk to your daughter about it even if she hasn’t experienced it herself.

Jo questioned Stephanie's story about being sick as a child and told Amelia that she was lying to get in on a case. Amelia, though working closely with Stephanie for several other cases, doubted her. It took Richard to say that he remembered her from the trial when she came to Grey Sloane for her to be believed. That's why Jo and Stephanie stopped speaking for awhile.

And honestly the fact that this woman actually was able to go to medical school AND become a successful doctor means SHE is more privileged than the average white man for THAT reason alone. And how do you know being mistaken for the nurse is a RACE thing? It could easily be a gender thing. Traditionally, nursing was usually a FEMALE dominated profession. That fact may be changing in recent years, but for a long time that was the norm. I actually DO know a black woman who is a medical doctor. She told me that sometimes her patients see her and think she is the RECEPTIONIST or the housekeeper. That is one thing to be upset about. But being mistaken for a nurse isn’t as big of a deal. All she needs to do is say “I’m a doctor” and then they will say “Oh! My apologies ma’am!” Then they move on.

This shit killed the show. This is the cringiest garbage ever put to film. It's a medical drama! Stick to medical issues and leave the politics out if it. Viewership numbers have fallen from over 26 million in 2005 to less than 4 million now. Between 2020 and 2022 the ratings literally halved. They had so many opportunities to end this show on a good note, but they made it clear that they intend to suck every cent they can get out of it and this is the kind of bottom of the barrel garbage you get when that happens.

Have you ever filled out a job form and questioned if you should lie about your race? Have you ever been called a terrorist because of your race? and so much more? Have you ever been referred "as the racial/cultured person" and not just a person? That is what white privilege is about. Things may not be easy for you or for your father. But it is much harder for someone of race. Buzzfeed Yellow did a video about white privilege which is pretty interesting. Also, there was another video where two people applied for the same jobs. Gave the exact same details, the only differences was in the names. The white guy managed to get call backs from most of the jobs, whereas the other dude didn't get one. Why wouldn't he get a call back when he has the exact same qualifications than the white guy? Unless they were solely rejected him on his "cultural" name.

I agree that no one should be hired because of their race, it really should be judged on how well they can do a job/qualifications and experience they have. I also agree that some places will hire a person of race so they can make their company look diverse. Though this would normally happen in smaller companies. Though if you look at the company, how many white people/people of race work there? I bet there would be a lot more white people than anyone else. So how many people of race have been turned away, applying for this one job? Where only one person of race would get it. Solely based on their race. Where as your step-father would have had a better chance, as they clearly would have hired more white people.
I really think job places should change how people apply. Take out the name, age, sex, race and sexuailty. When someone applies, at the top will be a job applicant number, that will replace their name and if they get a call/email back they will refer to this. In the application, if need be they have have a box to signify the person is over 18. Then the rest can be what they really need. A persons experience, qualifications, and those random questions they always have. This way a people will only be judge on their experience and qualities and not on anything else.
I am just rewatching GA and I love the fact that they do bring up real life issues, that they do shine a light on discrimination of all types. But I cannot stand Maggie who is so obsessed with being sister to Mer and the other girls, who is so self-absorbed, privileged, entitled and most def has only child syndrome. They honestly should've used another character tbh and they should've gone about it in a different way. The fact that Maggie felt offended by Amilia 's question and asked her if she was asking her as a sister or Sista was so off-putting and def not necessary. Maggie wants to be a sister so friggin bad, but she cannot take any questions about race from her sister? Makes no sense and in today's age it seems like you have to ask as many questions as possible cause you don't want to offend anyone. There are special names ppl want to be called, ppl want to be treated and talked to a certain way and we all are just supposed to know it all. Nobody is psychic, so don't get all mad and say "I'm their, them, she, he" with an attitude or expect ppl know how to approach you, how to ask the right questions aso.......... You shouldn't get upset with a close friend or family to talk about any and everything, cause the way Maggie just jumped down her throat makes ppl afraid to ask these important questions. It is a important subject and ppl need to be educated to understand, but there is a different way to go about it. Be open, honest, caring, just be nice about it and educate without judgment. If nobody is allowed to ask, then how you expect ppl to change and to get it?

Maggie's speech to Amelia was uncalled for and irritating, why because she herself as a doctor doesn't do anything for Black patients or the Black staff unlike Richard who made sure the Black staff succeeded. From season 14 when diverse characters were introduced it was simply because of their skin colour and nothing of importance.

I love this scene and the fact that Grey's brought this up. I just wished they did it more naturally, it felt kind of forced to me. I don't know why but this seemed to not really fit into the flow of the rest of the episode and it just felt like the writers in the writer's room went: "hey! we need to do something before the mid season finale that has depth and meaning, why don't we let Maggie rant about white privilege?" Don't get me wrong it's an important topic, and this needs to be heard, it just didn't feel organic to me in this episode.

If you want to know, I'm white, but I watched it with my mixed race boyfriend and he was just as confused about the timing of it as I was. Again, an important topic, but I just think it didn't feel natural or organic in the grand flow of the episode .... the grey's writers are usually better with bringing up important topics in the episodes and making them feel real and not misplaced

As uncomfortable and awkward as this conversation was for them, I think Dr. Maggie answered with great class, and sincere wisdom. She was unapologetically blunt, but she was still respectful....and moreover, she was right.

Maggie doesn’t want to be asked about it, but expects people who (as she made clear) would never understand to know when they have messed up? If you wanna problem solved it takes communication from all parties.
I'm a white woman, so I experience both sides of the card- not wanting to be racist AND having to correct sexism. I constantly have to teach men online and in my life (including my Boomer-aged parents) about sexism, and I can tell you that it gets exhausting, and that part she said about making the privileged party feel better was SPOT on. I also understand what you're saying about wanting to ask questions. Maybe the trick is to tell the marginalized person you have a question and ASK whether this is a good time for them. Tell them you have someone else in mind to ask if they're not up for it, and leave it up to them whether they're able to do emotional work right then and there. There's a new practice going around online- asking the people in your life whether they have the mental-space/time/patience to take on your emotional baggage in addition to their own before you tell them a heavy story or ask for hard advice. Extend that practice to the members of communities you're trying to get to know. Also, be genuinely okay with them saying no and be genuinely willing to listen, and make those things clear in your initial approach.
To paraphrase Maggie, that's just one woman's advice.

I didn’t understand my white privilege when this came out but now with the civil rights movements with Black Lives Matter. This was the show my wife and I watched together bc we really didn't share any commonalities with TV subjects......as soon as I saw this scene I quit watching it. I'm not buying the leftist agenda that mainstream TV is selling.
I liked this and not at the same time. Firstly it wasn’t the place. The car park. I know I’ve had work conversations in the car park but this shouldn’t have been one of them. I mean they live together. Could have been done on the sofa or something?

What? That's ridiculous. It sounds snobbish and condescending. They're trying to make it about race, instead of about how she feels. Which is what it is. It's a worry of hers. Most people need or want to reasurred about all sorts of things. It doesn't make it not okay just because her worry is about having offended someone because of race. And she totally wasn't racist. Lord.
Also, asking someone their perspective on something, about their experience, something they live, (as a woman of color, or a person of color in general in this instance) isn't the same as, say, asking her something like, "Do you know (insert black person in question)?" just because she's black as well. Isn't the point to be aware and to help continue the narrative of change? She makes it sound like she would have been offended that she was being asked something about it because of her skin color. "Are you asking me because I'm you're sister, or because I'm yo sista?"

Ok so I’m going to go off your profile picture and assume you are white (and if you are not, I apologize but you are still white passing so you have not experienced a lot of things people darker than you have. Just like I am light-skinned (not white passing), so while I have experienced a lot of things about being black, I have not experienced everything, as some things are experienced only by very dark-skinned people.
It is fair to assume that ignoring race is going to be the thing that erases racism. It’s an easy thought, “if we don’t think about it, it doesn’t exist”, but in practice, it doesn’t necessarily work that way. I will admit that this was poor writing, there was no mention of race for the whole episode and then they stick this at the end for some kind of learning opportunity and progressive credit? I don’t buy it. BUT- I think the actual message out of context of the rest of the episode is very important. As a black person who has been on the receiving end of hundreds of questions inquiring about my experiences, the way to maneuver a new, more racially tolerant society, it can get exhausting, because it’s not just the same questions over and over again (I mean, it is)- but it’s also the emotional labor of making sure that the other person doesn’t feel like A Racist™️ when they leave the conversation, because that is an avenue for more reassurance and more of our time (FYI, we know you guys aren’t Racists™️, everyone has their racial imperfections, and calling them out so that you see them and can fix them for the future is important for progress. It’s tedious, but it’s important). So I think Maggie is right, don’t put that job on Stephanie, she’s already had a difficult day and reassuring a nervous white person is not going to rebuild a bridge, it just won’t. And you can totally talk to your black friends about race! Just be respectful of their time and mental state. Some days we don’t have it in us to walk someone through the complexities of racial relations, it’s difficult and generally emotionally taxing- and sometimes we just don’t have the time. So my suggestion is don’t just ask the question- ask if they have time/emotional readiness for the question, and emphasize that you have another person to ask if they say no so they don’t feel pressured. And really respect if they say no. Another thing I notice goes a long way is when a white person shows me they did outside research before posing a question to me online. Many socially progressive ideas are researchable online, and showing that you put forth effort into learning about someone else’s experience makes the conversation warmer, easier, and better to learn from.

Maggie was kind of annoying here, she started to get defensive and look for the next racist thing Amelia is accidentally gonna say before Amelia even started to explain what she thinks she may have done.
And I mean “I’m not a spokesperson” ? What is that? Why is it wrong to consult a black person on this issue? Obviously, being black and experiencing what comes with it- Maggie might be able to understand better than Amelia wether what she did was wrong or not. She could’ve just given her an advice and appreciate the fact that Amelia cares enough that she feels bad and turns to her for help instead of reacting in such a condescending way.
It's not wrong per say, but as a black person who grew up in a white neighborhood, went to a mostly white school and had mostly white friends, I can say that it does get annoying at times constantly being the "spokesman for all black people". I'm sure this is not the first time in Maggie's life she's had to deal with questions like these. And the fact is in many cases, it's not about a white person trying to be better, or it's more about them making themselves feel better. It's like "see! I'm not really racist!". Just comes off like they're checking a box.

It took Richard to say that he remembered her from the trial when she came to Grey Sloane for her to be believed. That's why Jo and Stephanie stopped speaking for awhile.

And honestly the fact that this woman actually was able to go to medical school AND become a successful doctor means SHE is more privileged than the average white man for THAT reason alone. And how do you know being mistaken for the nurse is a RACE thing? It could easily be a gender thing. Traditionally, nursing was usually a FEMALE dominated profession. That fact may be changing in recent years, but for a long time that was the norm.
I actually DO know a black woman who is a medical doctor. She told me that sometimes her patients see her and think she is the RECEPTIONIST or the housekeeper. That is one thing to be upset about. But being mistaken for a nurse isn’t as big of a deal. All she needs to do is say “I’m a doctor” and then they will say “Oh! My apologies ma’am!” Then they move on.

This shit killed the show. This is the cringiest garbage ever put to film. It's a medical drama! Stick to medical issues and leave the politics out if it. Viewership numbers have fallen from over 26 million in 2005 to less than 4 million now. Between 2020 and 2022 the ratings literally halved. They had so many opportunities to end this show on a good note, but they made it clear that they intend to suck every cent they can get out of it and this is the kind of bottom of the barrel garbage you get when that happens.

Buzzfeed Yellow did a video about white privilege which is pretty interesting.
Also, there was another video where two people applied for the same jobs. Gave the exact same details, the only differences was in the names. The white guy managed to get call backs from most of the jobs, whereas the other dude didn't get one. Why wouldn't he get a call back when he has the exact same qualifications than the white guy? Unless they were solely rejected him on his "cultural" name.

I have never been racially stereotyped but the reason my stepfather can't get the job is because of affirmative action. Companies have to turn away whites to "include" minorities. I say that merit should get a person their job, not color or sex. My stepfather is an exceptional man who could get any job but they haven't hired him because of the bullshit known as affirmative action.

I agree that no one should be hired because of their race, it really should be judged on how well they can do a job/qualifications and experience they have.
I also agree that some places will hire a person of race so they can make their company look diverse. Though this would normally happen in smaller companies.
Though if you look at the company, how many white people/people of race work there? I bet there would be a lot more white people than anyone else. So how many people of race have been turned away, applying for this one job? Where only one person of race would get it. Solely based on their race.
Where as your step-father would have had a better chance, as they clearly would have hired more white people.
I really think job places should change how people apply.
Take out the name, age, sex, race and sexuailty.
When someone applies, at the top will be a job applicant number, that will replace their name and if they get a call/email back they will refer to this.
In the application, if need be they have have a box to signify the person is over 18.
Then the rest can be what they really need. A persons experience, qualifications, and those random questions they always have.
This way a people will only be judge on their experience and qualities and not on anything else.

I am just rewatching GA and I love the fact that they do bring up real life issues, that they do shine a light on discrimination of all types.
But I cannot stand Maggie who is so obsessed with being sister to Mer and the other girls, who is so self-absorbed, privileged, entitled and most def has only child syndrome. They honestly should've used another character tbh and they should've gone about it in a different way.
The fact that Maggie felt offended by Amilia 's question and asked her if she was asking her as a sister or Sista was so off-putting and def not necessary.
Maggie wants to be a sister so friggin bad, but she cannot take any questions about race from her sister?
Makes no sense and in today's age it seems like you have to ask as many questions as possible cause you don't want to offend anyone. There are special names ppl want to be called, ppl want to be treated and talked to a certain way and we all are just supposed to know it all.
Nobody is psychic, so don't get all mad and say "I'm their, them, she, he" with an attitude or expect ppl know how to approach you, how to ask the right questions aso..........
You shouldn't get upset with a close friend or family to talk about any and everything, cause the way Maggie just jumped down her throat makes ppl afraid to ask these important questions.
It is a important subject and ppl need to be educated to understand, but there is a different way to go about it.
