This ewe's udder is TOO BIG for her LAMBS! Vlog 313

  • Sometimes...
    Nature has a funny way of testing your skills. I literally just finished training two more than willing lambs to drink on one less than convinced mom how to drink, to now, a ewe that has SO MUCH MILK... but an udder so engorged that the lamb just physically cannot drink.
    Also beginning to see lambs going backwards... meaning moms are just not milking up to full potential.
    This means milk machine needs set up.
    Which then means, I have to clean up the far side to move some ewes and lambs around...
    The ripple effect of when things don't go as planned.

    1) I love the discussions you have Sandy about all the critical thinking you do regarding your sheep! It's highly educational and really appreciated
    2) does anybody else look at all that spent hay that was cleaned out and went, "OMG! That would be perfect for my garden!" lol...

      Yes to the spent hay comment!!! Only I would guess they may spray their fields to reduce the weeds...wouldnt want that on your garden if so

    That ewe with the bad udder reminded me of a ewe one of my farming teachers has. Her ewe tore her pubic tendon while in labor. I’m not 100% sure what a pubic tendon is to be honest, but it looked like her entire back half was one big udder. She recovered from it thank goodness, but it was quite a sight. Also I get the milking problem, I get kicked too when I milk goats unless they have a bowl of grain in front of them

    Oh poor mama to be that engorged, OUCH!!! We have been down that road before. Uncle finally bought a portable milk stand that we can move easily. The one I will say is if you ever have make one or buy one. Make bloody well sure it has sides or you can make sides for it. Sheep that aren't use to be in or on a stand will jump off the side and kick the s*** out of you or land in your lap. Sandi, you do know that you can refrigerate the milk from sheep for couple of days. Just make sure to warm it up to body heat and shake the bottle well before feeding.

    Poor momma. I wouldn’t be very ladylike being milked with engorgement like that! So the overflow in the fridge in case a bottle is needed for a new lamb

    Maybe you can get an automatic machine that can suction to her to help relieve her every so often, I think she needs so pain meds, warm compress and topical cream.... something to help her with discomfort...

    • @highstandards6226
      @highstandards6226 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tbh...having had mastitis myself, pain is an understatement! The best thing you can do for her is a topical anesthetic warm washcloths and be on her otherside while stripping her out. But she has GOT TO BE EMPTIED. AND YOUR VET SHOULD PROBABLY GIVE HER AN ANTIBIOTIC.

    I feel her pain. try an electric pump on her. It is quicker. also for my goat who hung so low, old sheet tired around udder, cold cabbage a few times a day helps to take the pain, and engorgement down. 24 hours straight though will dry her up. So not that. But as a lactation consultant, I use cabbage on engorged moms a lot. it works!

    • @RobertJones-ey9qz
      @RobertJones-ey9qz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Addy Hodgson I took her meaning put the cold cabbage in the sheet, but maybe she did mean feed it to her. ?? I'm confused. lol!

    • @chrystalteal4171
      @chrystalteal4171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You place cold cabbage leaves around the breast. Like a cold compress. I was told to do it a couple weeks ago but never did. Having a baby during covid prevents your ability to get out to buy things! Trying to keep the family safe and healthy!

    It is advised to make sure that the tube is in the stomach rather than the lung before using it. This is done by aspiration looking for gastric fluid. If you install milk in the lungs that will cause pneumonia and kill the lamb.

    Hi Sandi
    I am from New Plymouth in New Zealand and LOVE your channel!! I have a small flock of 40 ewes which I shepherd intensively...even setting my alarm to get up in the night if I am worried about a ewe - not suggesting you should do the same as your numbers are so much greater and you would burn out!!! I think you do a fantastic job and you are somewhat of a kindred spirit with your love for your sheep and the pleasure you get from them and their lambs!
    I am very interested in your sheep with the engorged teats. I have one exactly the same, and the udder hangs so low that the lambs cannot latch on. I have successfully got them on by making sure I am present when she gives birth, stripping each teat and then lifting the udder and guiding the teat to the lamb, rather than guiding the lamb to the teat. If I press the teat against the side of her udder where the lamb is looking, they have something to press against and can get the teat into their mouths. They are quick learners and once they have done it once or twice, they are away. I find if I bottle feed first up, they get nipple confusion and I will always work with latching the lamb onto mum as 1st option. Bringing the teat to the lamb works better for me than trying to guide the lamb's head...NZ lambs seem to hate it🙄😄. Keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to more videos. My sheep start lambing in two weeks🤞😁.

      To clarify, I always top up my lambs with a bottle if mum is insufficient, just as you do!😊

    Thank you for taking the time to make this channel. Although i have Boer goats i have learned a lot from watching your videos that crosses over. Only thing i can say from my end is get a milking stand! You save on time not having to chase them around and can tie the legs on the kickers. I have a single mom with a bad side that has to be hand stripped 2 xs daily. Major pain but as i only have 15 total she was worth keeping for a couple of breedings. No signs of mastitis, she just got cut from teeth on a breeding before i got her and that injury was enough to bulb the teat on that side.

    Man, I remember that feeling! Poor momma. Sorry to hear about the recent issues. Hopefully, that will be the only setback.

    I don't know about lamb. Is their anatomy such that you cannot run the tube into the lungs? Do you ever feel for air to come out of the tube or pull back on the syringe to check for stomach contents?
    My husband laughs at me because I have to watch "Sheepishly Me" every day. My history is cattle and dry land farming. He never thought I would be so interested in sheep! I just love how real you are in your sharing and emotions. Please keep sharing this gift to all of us. 🐑🥰

      Ugh, been there. I had a bull, 2 cows and their calves get to our neighbors. There’s a spot by our pond where it connects as overflow to the neighbors pond where there’s no fencing. I was letting them graze on a different part of the pasture that we haven’t fully fenced but we see them if they come down by the house and shoo them back. Somehow they snuck by us and made it to the pond opening. My neighbor called and said they were over making friends with his cows so we had to round them up (including 2 couple month old calves) and bring them back the long way down his driveway, down our road and back up the driveway to an enclosed pasture - took forever! Glad you were able to find him and bring him back!

    From a city girl whose has taken a lot of ribbing over many years because I don’t know the Farm way. However, I did work in the maternity ward many years ago where I learned engorged “breast” meant ice packs. So here it goes. Could you make a sort of sling and place an ice pack or two on the issue? Yep 👍 go ahead and say it. Crazy city girl🤣
