  • Are you curious about how to train to run an ultra marathon? Welcome to my running training VLOG - episode 2. In this training VLOG episode, I discuss the last 2 weeks leading up to Zion Ultra Marathon 100 miles.
    Curious about the gear I use and recommend: check out this link
    linktr.ee/runningwithsimon
    Those two weeks were drastically different. The first was the last week of my training block, which included 70 miles of running, some hill training, interval, tempo run and strength workout. The second week was tapering - mostly moving my body to keep loose while preparing for zion ultra marathon. And then the race! Trail running at its best.
    Only 3 weeks before Cocodona 250 - things are getting real! Also, I'm preparing for Mt Fuji 100 ultra marathon - oh boy the next few weeks will be intense!
    As always - Thanks for watching and remember -
    Work Hard!
    Believe in yourself!
    Push your limits!
    Simon

      It was my first race with them, and I think I've very happy to far. I wish the toe protection was a bit stronger but otherwise it felt like running on a cloud. Plus, they have "SG" on them at the back, which is clearly for "Simon Guerard". Very thoughtful from Hoka to dedicate their shoes to me

    I ran my first ultra yesterday and it did not go to plan at all. But I found the finish line! Part of my gratitude also goes out to you and your great content. Your videos are super informative and interesting and I keep finding myself applying your suggestions in my hard moments. Also, can you add a metric translation onto your videos? The imperial system only has limited, local relevance nowadays.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Congratulations Natalia!! I guess things almost never go according to plan, but ultra running is about finding solution and reaching that finish line despite everting - so congratulation! I hope your body is doing OK / you are recovering well.
      I'll try to remember about metric - I try to had them but sometimes forgot. I'll be more mindful of it, thank you for the suggestion

    Hi Simon, Zion looks like a great race. Some feedback for your editing. Some of the info boxes and texts you add as overlays are hard to fully catch for their short duraration. I think it's especially true when you add your work out sessions in these info boxes. I find myself having to go back, pause the video to read in order to comprehend your message. With this said, I am not native English so that may influence my reading comprehension. And it's not always, but the amount of info you add in the overlays differ, it's perfectly fine when it's like these one row text messages.
    Thanks for sharing all this content with us!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the feedback! I'll work on it. Do you have an example? I think I know what you mean, but just to be sure.
      We're not all native english, no worries. Maybe I should limit to 1 line at the time or something. Anyhow - thanks, I want this to be accessible to all so it's very helpful to know.

    • @danieljohnsson1862
      @danieljohnsson1862 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I went back and watched it from start to finish again. And I have to go back on the text line comment in this video. At 10:29 you have a double line for which I barely catch, as I am also listening, and not focusing on reading it catches my attention and I want to read it. With that said, I think I watch majority of your vidoes, atleast dating 6 months back and I have thought about this before. Think I have seen tripple lines as well. I know nothing about editing, so not sure how hard it is to change based on lines, but having 3 sec (which seems to be your default time) per line probably does the trick for most. I don't mind the longer message per say, I just want to read it.
      And now to why I made my feedback comment (after rewatching)
      These training vlog vidoes engage me. You are an inspiration so you sharing some details along with your personal perception of the sessions really interest me.
      5:05 you show overview. At this point I am not aware you will deepdive in to each day and I pause just to get a feel for how your week was.
      5:16 again info box I am unable to comprehend, it also comes before you speak about your perception or it so not sure if you will address it vocally at this point.
      6:22 here I am super engaged, how does a quality workout for a guy who runs 100 miles every month look? I pause to comprehend the details of what you are describing to get the full picture.
      8:40 again similar, you got me very interested about tempo. I want to hear your perception but also want to truly comprehend the data you present. Mind overflows a bit trying to take both aspects in, in such a short time span.
      14:45 here I actually miss the data box (I know you show it earlier). First time I watched it I actually rewinded here to get the data table to have the numbers on the words you describe.
      And same feedback for the entire taper week. Since you are on a monthly cycle I am really curious how your taper week means.
      All in all, it's not super annoying, just some feedback that comes from an engaged viewer that is curious and thankful that you share detailed insight, the data with your perception of the exercise at the time.

      @runningwithsimon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@danieljohnsson1862 Thanks! That's super helpful and valuable feedback - and very precise. I'll work on incorporating in the future - the level of detail is great. I'm not much of a video editor myself - I just picked up a camera one day and do things without any training or instruction - just trial and error. Eye balling everything. That will help me adjust. Much appreciated!

    Wow! great content.. Mt Fuji??? awesome!!!
    I am curious about how do you make travel plans for every race., every month and some of your races are international. Planning for one itself is too overwhelming for me

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mt Fuji has been a dream for such a long time - it's probably in my top5, so when the opportunity came last minute, I couldn't say no! It's also going to be my first ever international race - which definitely complicates things (but money-wise isn't bad - the flight would have been the worse but I used miles from work). As for the logistics, I work hybrid (in office, on the road, and remotely), which makes everything more feasible (there's no way I could race so much otherwise...it's hard to take time off with my work). Actually cocodona is tricky because I'm off the grid for a full week. My boss isn't happy about that...
      It's tiering to travel so much (and this time, the time zone difference will be a killer...) but getting used to it. When it's a race say like zion, we can simply drive which makes it simpler. Book a room for the week, work from there, race weekend, back on sunday. Fuji will be trickier of course.

      @runningwithsimon Thank you for replying. That's great you get to work on the road. my work doesn't allow me to work outside US. Big bummer for me. Mt Fuji sounds really exciting, I'll be looking forward to that. I am nowhere near racing 100 miles yet but your videos are so informational when I am ready. Thank you and good luck 👍 😊

    Mmm hmm.... SUUURE you had a strength workout that you forgot to record. ME TOO!! 😂😂 I love what you said about races being fun festivals. That's how I feel, too. I'm not going through all of this effort, and spending money and time, to be stressed and unhappy on race day.
    What's your opinion on gators? You run in a lot of sand, but I don't think I've seen you wear them.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had my phase with gaiters. Dirty girls of course - fun and cool. I picked it up more from hiking than running. I still have them but, I don't know. I grew out of them. I feel it's not enough to keep things like sand out. It helps with bigger stuff like tiny rocks, but that's rarely such a big issue. Maybe I just don't have the right gaiters + shoe combo. Because most of my shoes, the fabric is meshy enough to eventually let sand it. Which helps my feet breath (and probably helps with blisters) but not great for sand. I feel I'd work on a solution if I raced marathon des sables (or if I ever return to freaking antelope...sigh)
      I do use gaiters a lot more in winter (but obviously, winter gaiters). Totally different there - I'd hardly ever go in serious snow without them. They sadly don't look nearly as cool.
