@@ahunterinChrist Happy to bring you out! You can send me an email at mainelyoutdoors18@gmail.com to talk about it. However, during that time of year, the majority of the fishing you see on this channel won’t be the same. The rivers get too warm, and the larger fish return to the lakes and ponds. It’s more of the small stream fishing on blue line streams around that time. So depends what you're looking for.
Grouse hunting is my absolute favorite born an raised in Alaska it’s all I’ve ever known. One of my favorite meats is grouse I ruffed or probably sharp tail are my favorite just last year I went out on a hunt with 2 of my buddies an hit all our 10 man limits in like 3 hours was an insane trip love too see others out there enjoying it too
I have never limited out on grouse! I can take 5 a day, but the most I have ever taken is 4. If I was ever to hunt them seriously, I have no doubt that I could get my limit most days, but I prefer to take one or two for my supper and then start cooking. Thank you far these videos, and greetings from southern B.C., Canada!
Gorgeous drone shots. The hackle on those birds is marvelous & the tail feathers look like excellent substitutes for turkey tails. Any time you feel like you have too many, do feel free to contact me to take them off your hands. 🤗😁 Bacon & grouse sandwich looks yummy! Be well, Bob
Great stuff as usual! I was up from PA the second weekend in Oct. and the trees were still fully leaved and near peak color. It made for limited shooting opportunities but we still found birds. Hunted on foot with my Labrador, walking the most overgrown roads we could find. Crops were full of mushroom pieces. The woods were loaded with mushrooms, some as big as 10-12 inches across. I wish I knew more about mushroom picking. Enjoy the rest of your season, Maine is a wonderful place to be outdoors!!!
Great hunting! You’re correct that chocolate color phase is not a “red” or rufous phase. One more thing, a broken hand of the center primary tail feathers usually indicate a hen, the primary feathers growing right up to the tail feathers are the best way to determine sex of each bird, one or two-tan colored dots nearest the end(not the tip prior to)are sure ways to identify. Now young thunder chicken hunter I’ll leave it to you to determine which. I’m a grouse maniac with 47 years of being blessed to pursue these magnificent game & my state’s official bird. Good Luck and keep them coming. Tim Leighty 1GROUSE PA
Jesse this might interest you but down here in NC , the red phase grouse is almost all we have ,, once a season maybe , I would see the grey phase , we have a season limit also here ,,,30 is that number , and three per day , although any more a limit is not needed, we don’t have the spread of birds to even make it possible to get a daily limit
@@MainelyOutDoors where I live thirty years ago we had good populations of grouse within 20 miles of my house ,, but today it is 45 miles to the nearest huntable population
Nice! Its been a pretty decent grouse season so far this year! My 9 year old shot his first grouse in the air last week....we we're pretty excited about that! Wasn't his first grouse shot (probably shot about 40 between last year and this year) but his first in the air. Those bacon grouse sandwiches looked delicious! Nice hunt!
I always enjoy your grouse hunting videos! In my state, grouse populations have gotten critically low due to the Forrests aging up and not providing suitable habitat anymore. The conservation agency has released some birds, but ruffled grouse will likely remain extirpated from most of the state for the foreseeable future.
Awesome grouse hunting vid Jess! I always wondered about what does a grouse in the red or orange phase look like. Thank you for getting one in that phase. I’ve acquired tails from buddies that hunt them and that Breadcrust fly calls for that phase. Don’t really think it matters what phase. Anyway, loved that catch /cook grouse sandwich. Drooling here at work. Go get some more and keep the film rolling!
FWIW. A broken tail band (two middle feathers) indicates a female or hen grouse, rather than its age. A male typically has an unbroken full tail band. But that’s not definitive, as some males have a broken band as well. The number of dots on the rump feathers. (The feathers on the lower back that cover the base of the tail) are a better indicator of sex. Two sometimes three dots on those feathers is a male. No dots or one dot is a female.
The males have an unbroken band on the tail, the females have center feathers that are more mottles on the band and split it into two parts. If you want to age your birds, you need to look at the wing feathers adults are more rounded tips and juveniles have more pointed or frayed tips.
I believe a 20 is the best for grouse. However, I know plenty of people that use a 410 and a 12. Use what you have and just know your range and shot pattern. That’s is the most important part
28, 20, and 16 are ideal. too close and the 12 destroys the bird. 410 really should only be used for up close ground-pounding. it's a ballistic disaster and crippler of game.
I can answer that for yo7. He likes to shoot 20 gauge and uses #6 shot and his pump action is a Winchester 1300. I know your question is a year old but you still might want to know
Did anyone else see more than one bird flying during this video?? As a dog assisted and sometime dog unassisted hunter, I don't shoot birds on the ground or sitting still on a limb.
nope. i can tolerate some ground pounding (on the wing is tough to film), but when the strategy is driving and ground swatting it's not so much hunting as it is a grocery run

Yeah, grouse is by far the tastiest bird in North America! Pan fried or in jambalaya, it's by far the best tasting bird, wild or farmed! 😋✌️😎
Great video! really difficult to hunt and film together with beautiful landscapes to watch. Keep up the good work!
Excellent! Well, here in Quebec (your neighbors), I saw and got many grouse this year and last year as well.
limited out on blue grouse in the gravelly range and sharp-tails in my backyard in Churchill MT earlier in the week...
Jealous I’ve always wanted to go after those. Definitely on the bucket list.
Amazing. That flock was huge.
Don’t think I have ever seen that many birds at once that was awesome
As always, gorgeous cinematography.
It's Grouse season, more hunting videos please!!!
Great video man this guy is definitely my number one hunting channel.
Wow, i like your videos, catch and cook, i,m in Quebec, and i like Ruffed Grouse hunting , really Cool vidéo 👍👍👍
Thanks! great to hear you enjoyed them! plenty more to come
Awesome video buddy congrats on the birds. Yeah, there was at least 10 in that flock for sure. Good spot to go back too on a frosty morning
Awesome video! Those sandwiches looked sooo goood!
Fantastic video! Even the sandwiches were my style haha! Always enjoy your content.
Can't wait for grouse season here in Québec! Your videos make the wait not so bad😂
Great day of hunting and a damn fine looking meal. 👍🏻

I'm up in New Brunswick. With the amount of logging we do up here to the wife and I get bag limits of 12 every time
I jus finished getting me one grouse today!

man I love grouse hunting. My best day was with my brother, between us we got our daily limit (20),and a black bear. Good memories.
Crazy how many birds were in that one spot, most I have seen is 5 in a group. How do you like your buddies 4Runner?
Its awesome! He's got a good set up there and we can use it to get places that its hard for my pickup to fit. I'm going to film a tour of it one day

Oh great info! Thanks for sending that along. That’s what I was always told so I assumed it to be true. Guess I’ll have to do some more research
I can’t bring myself to shoot a Grouse sitting…
Just seems wrong to do this to the King
Looks like an FPS hunting game fr. footage is looking great lately.
Thanks!
Any chance you can name drop the campsite where you cooked those birds up? It looks so familiar to me.
No sorry it’s too close to the road I hunt😂

I only went grouse hunting twice this year and the second I bumped a big big flock like that and I had my 22 so I couldn’t shoot any 😂

I always say I'm going to bird hunt every year but never do...kinda want to now!
Would 410 be powerful enough or do i need to use my 12

you're allowed to shoot birds on the road in Maine? VT you can't even shoot from a class 4 rd they consider it a public highway.
is this in Canada ?
Maine near the border
A nether grouse video pls
birds on the ground don't count, only in flight. The ones on the ground we hunt with rocks.
very nice...i enjoyed this video. Jesse, what shotgun are you using? is it 870? Do you have 1 shotgun for all your wingshooting??

Where about in Maine do you hunt. I’m from New Brunswick and I drive through Maine every week
This was up in northern Maine
there's definitely ones that are more red then brown.
No hate or anything but I thought the break in the bar meant they were a female
No your right. I always thought it was a juvenile until I posted this and some people send me to an article explaining it. At least I know now
