    THANK YOU! Been looking for this help (cable box to laptop) and your video was wonderful! It got me 95% of the way there, but for maybe someone looking for a hint, OBS did not see my Video Capture Device on the drop-down list when adding "Device". After much cursing & googling, it turn out my Windows 11 > Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras > Camera Privacy Settings > Camera Access was set to "Off". Same with my System > Sound > Input (yours might be slightly different). Thank you again!!

    What an incredibly helpful and well explained video. I bought a digital converter box, the Mediasonic Homeworx HW130, plugged it in and got a fat nothing. Of course, while the Amazon ad mentions using it with a computer monitor (I see now that it didn't actually say "laptop), it doesn't give the essential information needed to make it work that way. Of course, the instructions that came with the digital converter box didn't either. I thought I was SOL until I found your video. Although you are using a different brand, one that looks higher quality than mine, I just followed your instructions to the letter. I lost some time messing around due to a silly mistake. (I thought I could configure the box using the image in OBS when the Mediasonic clicker was sitting right in front of me. Once I popped in the batteries, I started controlling the box with it and I could see the configurations I was making in OBS. Duh.) Anyway, now I'm a big "Living in the Past" fan. Thank you.

    Excellent overview and information. Exactly what I was looking for. I actually added another component - a 1 to 2 HDMI OREI Splitter. You have to pay attention to the splitter compatibility with your cable box, but I am able to connect my Comcast cable box to both my Smart TV and my computer at the same time for watching and recording. Thanks again.

      Glad the video helped. I am surprised AT&T is letting you keep the U-verse Box (with your recordings) if you are cancelling your service.

    hey, great video! just a problem, when I record and I review it, the audio is a bit effed up. The audio is like double playing, how to fix this problem?

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It sounds like you have two audio sources that are recording. . . maybe a microphone or your desktop audio as well as your VCR source. In OBS studio look at your audio mixer while the TV is connected and playing. You should only have one item playing. . . . if you see multiple ones, then mute the ones you are not interested in getting in your playback. Hope that makes sense but if you have further questions let me know.

    What about the cable box's HDCP (HiDef Copy Protection) encryption? You'll need to use a device that strips away that copy protection.

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never had anything I could not copy. If it plays on my cable box I can see and record it to my computer. I am on At&t Uverse.

    Thanks for the video! It gave me some new inspiration after troubleshooting all day.
    Just rubberduck debugging here, this might be interesting: I have a smart tv (ChiQ U55H7a). It's new but the LCD screen is broken. I am trying to see my tv screen with Cam Link 4k via OBS on my computer, but it just says: no signal. So, I suspect I need to finish some kind of setup on the tv itself, which I can't do because the screen doesn't work, Or am I missing a cable box? What do you think? I've also tried directly connecting it to my internet via ether cable / trying to find it via my Google Home system / trying to blindly go trough the first setup -which is hi-la-rious to even try btw-, but....alas, nothing seems to work.
    If you have any troubleshooting ideas, I'd love to hear them!

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. First let me say I am not familiar with Cam Link 4K. So I can tell you I tried all kinds of different things and I could not get anything to work until I purchases all items in the video and used them (even though at the time some did not seem like they would be needed). The fact that your LCD screen is broken I would not think would hurt anything. I also can't imaging any setting on the TV that you would need to adjust. My advice would be try the items in my video (links in description). They are all on Amazon, so if you get them and it doesn't work you could return. I hope you keep me posted on how it goes.

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would recommend unplugging the USB camera, then following the video. The more external devices you have plugged in (i.e. camera's, microphones, etc.) are just going to confuse you. Once you get used to the OSB studio source settings you can keep all those plugged in and you will know what to select and not to. . . but for starting out just unplug them.

      @LivinginthePast2021  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi there, thanks for the comment. Yes in OBS studio you can either type "F11" or in the menu bar click View --> Full Screen Interface and it will go full screen. Hope that helps.

  • @Watcher239

    Great video and explanation. How do you control the volume? From your cable box, computer keyboard, etc? I have an Xfinity cable box connected to a Dell PC used to watch TV when the PC is switched Monitor mode, but my cable remote controls the channels but not the volume (there are no volume controls on the monitor).

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am using OBS with Monitor and Output as my audio setting. If you do it that way you will be able to heard the TV playback in your computer (which I listen to mine with headphones on connected to my computer). I use the computer to control the volume. . . . TV remote just for changing the channels, etc. I hope that makes sense but let me know if additional questions.

    Can you get computer to control cable box and remote into the computer from another computer to watch live tv or recordings?

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You absolutely can. You computer is basically getting the data from your cable box. . . .and displaying it with OBS studio. So as long as you can remotely connect to that computer, you can open OBS studio and watch your TV from anywhere. The only issue you are going to run into is you need your remote to change the channel. . . so when you connect remotely you are only going to be able to watch whatever was the last channel you were on (since you can't point the remote to your TV and change the channel from your remote location). I hope that makes sense.

    My OBS software isn't detecting the cable box through the HDMI to USB-C adapter, any suggestions?

    • @LivinginthePast2021
      @LivinginthePast2021  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have never tried with with a USB-C adapter so maybe some one else can chime in. The only way I have ever been able to get this to work is using the items in the video (which uses just standard USB (Type A).
