Fantastic Album! Holly Williams describes Southeastern perfectly in a review she did for Garden & Gun: “Every single human should own Southeastern, by Jason Isbell. It will break you down, lift you up into laughter, make you explore the dark places you never wanted to, and still has the choruses that you can’t stop singing in the shower. Love and glory, death and defeat. A perfect exploration into all of our souls no matter our age, class, or taste. He is a perfect storyteller and musician.”
Impulse Sonic Arts Great quote, but Holly's latest output is right up there as well in terms of musicianship and songwriting. I mean Waitin on June, my word....
Is it bad that I’ve listened to every Jason Isbell video on TH-cam and get all giddy like a school girl when I see a new one? Yeah, I didn’t think so either ;)
as a high school student who struggles to find good new music this really gives me hope. what a good songwriter and he seems like a genuine good dude also.
Last time I saw Jason someone in the crowd kept shouting songs for him to play, he said "I don't make set list and neither do you" best answer to an annoying drunk ever.
Love it, my favorite come back I heard once was "You seem to have a LOT TO SAY, come down here to the microphone!" If they're Drunk enough you get em down, then have the bouncers escort em out.
Never noticed how good the bass part is on Different Days. Sometimes I’m so into Jason’s lyrics I forget to listen to how good all the instrumentation is as well!
Just discovered the wonderful music and songwriting talent that is Jason Isbell. I love it when you discover a new artist and you can reach back and discover a rich catalogue of great songs and brilliant music.
Not really sure he’s country - perhaps Southern Rock but he is hard to define which is why he is so intriguing. All the best. New Album “Weathervanes” is out.
For the first time, I listened to Jason Isbell. He seems a good-hearted humble person, explaining the story behind the song. I may not agree with some of his messages, but love the way he explores life of us all, without distinction! His song writing skills are so good!
He was great in the Truckers but has really hit his stride with the 400 unit. Albums get better and highlights come thick and fast - song-writing has grown better, his playing too and he's now a superb band-leader. Great to hear the Southwestern songs with the band, and a superb post. Thanks y'all from England
sturgill, stapleton, jamey , and now mr Jason isbell .. 🎵from the soul and talent worthy of Willie Waylon cash .. thank you Jason for sharing your soul and delivering music from the ❤
I can't wait to see Jason in Atlanta at a music festival! Hadn't heard of him before recently but now I'm really enjoying his soulful music. It is truly so soulful and well-written!
Humility and appreciation Jason exudes it in undeniable authenticity. Cheryl Waters you did a wonderful job on this interview. This was a unforced conversation where you were both actually listening to each other which can only happen when both parties are very comfortable. Nicely done! I've watched this performance many times and I keep coming back again, so good. Thank you so much! And I get to see him play again this week at Red Rocks! I'm blessed!
I saw this band at the Aladdin Theater in PDX, Oregon. They were soft, LOUD, and awesome. They are well kept in in sync. Jason has one of the biggest voices I've ever heard live. He actually needs a group that can match his boldness and these guys are a great fit for him. As for the "20 something" guitarist, he is really special. He blew my mind on several occasions that night.
The keyboard player was with Son Volt. I don't know why Jay got rid of him, but a great addition to any band. He's perfect with Isbell, I agree, not only a song writer, but as a picker. He's blown my mind since Decoration Day tour years ago!!!
Jason's music flows like warm butter ... simple and easy to listen to ... a very rare talent.. Go see him and support real talent even if the "popular" music culture does not .......
I've had the pleasure meeting Jason several time due tot he countless shows I attend for him. One of the most down to earth and talented individuals I have ever met.
Rarely , very rarely do I get goose bumps when listening to new(er) artists. I can barely get a shirt on now after listening to Jason due to, you guessed it, the goose bumps..... great career to come... just happy I "found" him early on...much prayers for continued success.... Jason, stay true. .. I know you will....
Saw Jason in Savannah at Johnny Mercer Theater as warm-up to John Prine. What a wonderful performer. I had to purchase his newest CD "Southeastern". Being an Alabama native, naturally I could dive into his music easily.
Seattle? long way from Bama... i always enjoy the radio show live performances wherever they are at! i love at 5:00 when the guitar gets hit while he talks about taking such good care of it. ah, road life.
Sounds great. I've only added "Cover Me Up" don't wanna add to many otherwise it a Jason Isbell cover band, and he's till touring actively. Good Luck Aaron. Cheers my friend
This guy totally reminds me of my best friend who died 15 years ago. Thay look almost identical and share the same approach in making music. I like it.
Jason sings "Live Oak", one of the darkest songs anyone's ever heard, and Holly says, "Ummm... so nice", like he'd just sang a Christmas carol or something. Pretty funny...
been a fan of Jason for a while now even without knowing it for a while. My favorite songs DBT did were isbell songs before i even knew. Outfit etc... Then I started listening to his solo stuff and now its intimate. Shared this artist with a couple of girl friends better then sex in its ability to forever hold a moment (i am old now). I love playing these songs myself. I wish there was a good video for my early favorite song "Sun Stroke"
I saw his strap fail and that guitar hit the stage at Christmas Jam in Asheville. He just stood silent for a moment, looking at it at his feet and he said, "I just dropped that guitar."
These songs from Southeastern have turned out to be even better live with the 400 Unit. Sadler Vaden was a great addition to the lineup on guitar and his duet here on Stockholm is strong.
Staring at the pictures of the runaways on the wall / Seems like these days you couldn't run away at all / Even if you did, what you got to run away to? / Just another drunk daddy with a white man's point of view How to set up an image in only four lines... This man is a genuine wordsmith, best songwriter around.
Here are the Lyrics "Flying Over Water" From the sky, we look so organized and brave Walls that make up barricades and graves Daddy's little empire, built by hands and built by slaves From the sky, we look so organized and brave In the heat, I saw you rising from the dirt Drunken tears and tugging at your skirt If only you could tell me then, what part of you got hurt In the heat, I saw you rising from the dirt Take my hand baby, we're over land I know flying over water makes you cry Where's that liquor cart, maybe we shouldn't start But I can't for the life of me say why From the sky the highway's straight as it could be A string pulled tight from home to Tennessee And still, somehow, those ditches took the better part of me From the sky, the highway's straight as it could be Take my hand baby, we're over land I know flying over water makes you cry Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home But I can't for the life of me say why Do we leave our love behind? Would we leave our love behind? Did we leave our love behind? Would we leave our love behind? Take my hand baby, we're over land I know flying over water makes you cry Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home But I can't for the life of me say why Did we leave our love behind? Did we leave our love behind?
Although I love the Isbell did with the Truckers, this stuff is amazing. Also Isbell referring to Todd Snider is pretty cool. . . East Nashville skyline, crossing over to a state of mind!
Cheryl, loved the interview you have a great natural way about you.Check out Bob Harris at BBC - I'll be subscribing to KEXP. Saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit last night in Camden Town, London...that's England for you all! Great Glorious Gig. A man with with a voice and the words and music to go with it and such a tight band and backing vocals.
the guy doesn't write a bad song. one of the best singer/songwriters of a generation.
Fantastic Album! Holly Williams describes Southeastern perfectly in a review she did for Garden & Gun:

Impulse Sonic Arts I concur. Some important answers to life's tough questions are woven into his lyrics. :) SO inspiring!
Truer words have never been spoken.
Is it bad that I’ve listened to every Jason Isbell video on TH-cam and get all giddy like a school girl when I see a new one?
Yeah, I didn’t think so either ;)
No it's not bad I've done the same
No I do it every time too!
I do that with Sturgill. I just started with Jason though.
I think I'm trying to catch up with you. Yeah, really giddy!
Recently, and accidentally found Jason Isbell on TH-cam. So glad I did. Great songwriting combined with a great voice. Love it.
Jason is the REAL DEAL. Not just an artist, but a mentor. To all who struggle.
Screw these commercials in the middle of these good songs
as a high school student who struggles to find good new music this really gives me hope. what a good songwriter and he seems like a genuine good dude also.
Look no further than Sturgill Simpson.
Ryan Nalley Sturgill Simpson Is immensely talented but there is no way that he is a better lyricist than Jason Isbell.
Luke Davis if you like Jason, check out American Aquarium. Great band from Raleigh, NC and Jason actually produced one of their albums.
K17swayne you're correct. Sturgill is awesome, but doesn't cut as deeply as Isbell.
He has a way of getting in your head I love it
Last time I saw Jason someone in the crowd kept shouting songs for him to play, he said "I don't make set list and neither do you" best answer to an annoying drunk ever.
Love it, my favorite come back I heard once was "You seem to have a LOT TO SAY, come down here to the microphone!" If they're Drunk enough you get em down, then have the bouncers escort em out.
Now he plays the same set list at every show
Never noticed how good the bass part is on Different Days.
I just discovered him yesterday on NPR's "Mountain Stage". I'd heard of him but never really paid attention. I'm paying attention now.
Me too : )
Jonathan Bailey ...."
I am basically obsessed with his music, please keep doing what you are doing!!
I spent a decade on Ryan Adams now I can't stop with Jason - like 5 years now... basically since Southeastern.
Live Oak is a brilliant song!
I'm playing it on repeat. What a song.
Just came across this.
3 year fan.
5 time live show attendee..
Appreciate and enjoy the honest and live progression.
Looking forward to so much more.
Never been a big fan of country music but this guy, Jason Isbell, is a great find - so is The Zac Brown Band btw.
Southeastern was the best album of 2013 and the more I see Jason perform live, the more addicted I get. Wilmington or Bust this Saturday!!!
One hundred thanks
It s great

How can you not love this guy. Talented in all sorts of ways and nice
Best album of 2013. Best gig of 2013. Working hard in 2014. Excellent...
Great performance! I found Jason by accident, listening to autoplay after listening to an Alabama Shakes song. I'm delighted and I thinkI'll stay.
Is it me or does this sound just like the album. Isbell is such a great singer, it's giving me a mindfuck.
KEXP ,CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR EXCELLENT STUDIO RECORDING AND PRESENTATION . ROCK ON!
Jason Isbell is a Musical Badass!
"Jesus loves the sinner, but the highway loves the sin."
Enjoyed this a bunch over lunch! Love Jason's music!
congrats Jason doing great. Now bring it back home to Alabama. we miss your music
Incredible songwriter. Southeastern is his best work yet. Can't wait for what's next!e
He's such a great song writer.
Am truly amazed watching Jason Isbell right now. Come to Los Angeles.
This tune is so catchy, off his Southeastern CD. I get it stuck in my head for days! Love it, obviously.
Thanks--these guys are great--go see them live!
Can't wait to see him in London:)
I love how issy just decides to shred out so nonchalantly in spots. Like "yea I can play too."
Great band and excellent songs--very tight too--I love live performances that come off so well like this. Well done guys!
been in the sky so long, seems like a long way home...

I love it ... KEXP always good ;}
Extraordinary album
Saw Jason in Savannah at Johnny Mercer Theater as warm-up to John Prine. What a wonderful performer. I had to purchase his newest CD "Southeastern". Being an Alabama native, naturally I could dive into his music easily.
I know it’s been a few years but I have one word to say…..Lucky!
not since Harry Chapin has there been a soul driven songwriter like Jason Isbell , great singer , writer, musician and a great band .
+frank martin John Prine!
+frank martin Steve Earle?
cmon Frank.
Seattle? long way from Bama... i always enjoy the radio show live performances wherever they are at! i love at 5:00 when the guitar gets hit while he talks about taking such good care of it. ah, road life.
"& sometimes you can filter that down to the punk rockers"... love this guy!
Yea, of course I do.
Was great to see this perfromance since I haven't had a chance to see him live yet.
brondman18 saw him last night at the incredible Florida Theater in Jax, amazing..Life time concert.
James Jones I saw him then, too... fantastic performance. I've been practicing songs from Southeastern all week.
Sounds great. I've only added "Cover Me Up" don't wanna add to many otherwise it a Jason Isbell cover band, and he's till touring actively. Good Luck Aaron. Cheers my friend
We will see him at Shaky Boots tomorrow. This guy is a great songwriter. He's gonna make a lot of new fans in the ATL!
Beautiful.
Jason is amazing in concert, AMAZING.
This guy totally reminds me of my best friend who died 15 years ago. Thay look almost identical and share the same approach in making music. I like it.
watching in 2021 !
Great music! I loved all his songs.
this is the first thing in so long that really sounds like the USA
I love these guys so much, it's amazing
WONDERFUL music ! I love this voice, is amazing. Thank you.
"It's an album full of songs more about me"...following a song about a Great Lakes pirate finding love. Gotta love that!
It's metaphorical about his divorce.
Such great music and Jason seems like a fun guy :)
Jason sings "Live Oak", one of the darkest songs anyone's ever heard, and Holly says, "Ummm... so nice", like he'd just sang a Christmas carol or something. Pretty funny...
Maybe she understood that it's metaphorical?
How is it not... "Umm.. So nice"? One of the most beautiful songs written, albeit dark
Check out Isbell's CD Southeastern from 2013. I was one of the best released in any genre. His Alabama Pines is also a perfect track.
Southeastern is such a solid album
Holy crap, this is for Southeastern! Wonder if the DJ lady knew what she was hearing haha. History in the making.
His songs were great during his DBT stint and he still kicks butt.
been a fan of Jason for a while now even without knowing it for a while. My favorite songs DBT did were isbell songs before i even knew. Outfit etc... Then I started listening to his solo stuff and now its intimate. Shared this artist with a couple of girl friends better then sex in its ability to forever hold a moment (i am old now). saw him on my birthday in New Orleans unforgettable trip unforgettable show. And thats what its about
Holy hell, this is some classy stuff right here.
love it from kc....
Nashville October with Parker Millsap! Oh yeah.
Amazing in the band drive by truckers and good with this band Jason kicks ass.
I don't say much....but he is exceptional. Springsteen feel.
Seriously impressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too. You are right. Springsteen loves him. He’s actually said some really nice things about him.
Wicked good one guys\
"Live Oak" feels so much like a Townes Van Zandt song
I saw his strap fail and that guitar hit the stage at Christmas Jam in Asheville. He just stood silent for a moment, looking at it at his feet and he said, "I just dropped that guitar."
Link
Drive by truckers lost alot when Jason Isbell went away. Jason is great.
awesome!!!
💥👁💥👀 watching. Wink.

Come to Canada

Not to mention working Benzodiazepine into a song and making it work! He's the man.
Nielz073 up there with the greats
Here are the Lyrics
"Flying Over Water"
From the sky, we look so organized and brave
Walls that make up barricades and graves
Daddy's little empire, built by hands and built by slaves
From the sky, we look so organized and brave
In the heat, I saw you rising from the dirt
Drunken tears and tugging at your skirt
If only you could tell me then, what part of you got hurt
In the heat, I saw you rising from the dirt
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Where's that liquor cart, maybe we shouldn't start
But I can't for the life of me say why
From the sky the highway's straight as it could be
A string pulled tight from home to Tennessee
And still, somehow, those ditches took the better part of me
From the sky, the highway's straight as it could be
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home
But I can't for the life of me say why
Do we leave our love behind?
Would we leave our love behind?
Did we leave our love behind?
Would we leave our love behind?
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home
But I can't for the life of me say why
Did we leave our love behind?
Did we leave our love behind?
No ego, no band members competing, Awesome
Fucking Brilliance...
Jason's buddy Dave Letterman brought him to play in the city park in Choteau, Montana on the night of a July 3 several years ago.
18 people were so wasted watching this they accidentally hit thumbs down.
Four years later, that number is up to 50. How in heaven's name can that be?
@@SeaDrive300, probably people that disagree with his politics.
freetickeys 56 drunks...terrible
58 now. They all need a punch in the junk.
I find they like it when I stand right in the front row and scream out requests.
GOLD
Sadler wiping some sort of gunk off his Telly Deluxe while waiting for his entry at 7:25 is peak sideman energy.
@ 5:50 the vocals are very nice!
wow....wow
Although I love the Isbell did with the Truckers, this stuff is amazing. Also Isbell referring to Todd Snider is pretty cool. . . East Nashville skyline, crossing over to a state of mind!
WOW

Live Oak's a great song. Maybe the greatest song about a serial killer, right up there with Sufjan's John Wayne Gacy Jr.
The drummer is wearing a Grimeys shirt. Love Nashville.
Let's kick it...
15 seconds into holding the new guitar and it gets bumped. Eeek!!
Great moment.
There are some similarities between Ryan Adams and Jason Isbell
Good stuff from both
Chris Stapleton and this guy need to tour. Outlaw country returns...
love the Todd Snider reference :)
cool
