People act like learning "to code" is just like learning to become a sandwich artist at Subway or a barista at Starbucks. The reality is that nobody wanders into these skillsets by accident and although you can learn the basics in a couple afternoons it takes quite a bit of self-study and practice to become skilled at software design/architecture. It's quite like math or physics in that you can learn to solve the simple problems and watch somebody solve the hard problems but you don't realize until you take a swing at it yourself just how much more practice you need before you develop an intuition for the right approach to good solutions. If you want to grow then you need to bite off just a little bit more than you can chew and pair up with a mentor who can show you the error of your ways.

Learning on so many platforms and just learning learning (for loop )crazy how much we are all almost the same. I always feel I know nothing but yet I learnt some much. I will follow your advice ☺️ because I think am ready.

@scripteaze I guess in a sense you can imagine it to be a game where you don't die. Give yourself space to fail and to get stuck, you learn as you unstuck yourself. Set in your mind something you want to build and start building it, figuring it out as you go.
I want to learn java language online and have watched a few videos on it as well but can't get a proper grip. Can you recommend any vids which helped you?
i learned (or should i say) i read 5 books on coding, C, C++, Visual Basic, and a few others and at the end of every one of these books the only thing i learned was how to print "hello world" and "goodbye cruel world" and that was about 14 years ago or so, all that reading and i still have no idea how to make a simple video game? what a waste of time and money.

Very cool..My passion is also to become a coder...Due to full time job and kid, its too difficult I thought..but after watching your talk, It gives me inspiration...Thanks so much for sharing
Go to your town library and make a friend who is from software background and learn from him/her.in many libraries wifi is free so you can learn from various sources.
At 8:58, she basically says she started from scratch a few times, as "free trial" ran out for each given service. Why not just pay for a service, if you're getting value from it?
I'm learning python, while working 6 days per week, 11 hours per day. I have made few projects and next one is always more complicated than one before. Dont plan to be programmer but who knows what future brings.
I've dabbled in scripting and programming, but have never been able to get fluent enough to do anything with it. I currently have other irons in the fire. If I ever get back into it, this video will be one of the reasons I do.
You have explained everything beautifully...
A good example of someones real life, down to Earth, example on becoming a coder. Great job!!!
Being in process of choosing the right field in UNI days , is hard but this helps
Great vid and much appreiciated
I am here after learning React Js. It's like a miracle JavaScript atlast found space in my head
and this is just your first talk? wow! you are a real storyteller! and what an inspiring story :)
wow, she has got amazing storytelling skill
Did you start by saying that this is your first time speaking?
It doesn't look like it at all.
Thank you for the very inspiring and practical presentation.
She's such a likable character. Cool story!
I love how detailed your experience is!
Oh my god, this is absolutely me. I am totally stuck, jumped already over 3 learning platforms and repeated the basic stuff, still programming calculators the 3rd time -.- . Now, I started to study beside of my full-time job and (we learn with Java) the scripture of the university is confusing me again. My Book starts with different things, the stuff of the university requires different things, I am jumping between youtube tutorials, my "Java is also an Island" Book and the lectures of the university.
-:- Feeling stuck in a badly programmed loop -.- with the same output.
A great and inspiring presentation on a journey on learning how to code.
Hi Colleen - I don't know anything about what you spoke about however you're quite witty, funny & a good speaker. Continued success w/ family & work;
Very inspirational ma'am. Thank you for sharing this with us, very motivating for me who is Software Engineering graduate and struggling to learn new tools.
Her English is really good for her first time speaking EVER.
What a presentation! Apart from your coding skill you have more gem in your pocket. Use it!
6:03-6:22 !!! I am going through exact same phase and i select web and cloud as well!!
I studied electrical engineering in college. Basically, she could finish her story with that sentence
She is a good-story teller! Happy 2022! .
Thanks for sharing this view of yours, i am on my journey nowadays. Awesome journey and stick to your path you have chosen and you are passionate about.
this video just made my day! thank you for sharing!!!! its so inspiring.
Just watched this video halfway. I related with everything she said lol. From having newborn when learning haaa, so many different choices, I have thought about Shopify and wordpress development. Lol even tried to make money that way. Having moved to a new country and taking "just" a job. Google bombarding me with learning options. Learning on so many platforms and just learning learning (for loop )crazy how much we are all almost the same. I always feel I know nothing but yet I learnt some much. I will follow your advice ☺️ because I think am ready.
Mam, I don't know about your programming skills. But you are great comic and have a good sense of humor.
Really enjoyed 2nd half of video. Glad I watched this through.
She's great! She's brave! Wish you good luck!
Really good talk. Can be applied to many other things in real life.
My journey starts here. Hopefully I'll come back after my success. Good luck to myself.
Have you also tried out a career in movies / comedy... I have reasons to believe programming is not all you can do... Very funny yet very educative. Thank You.
Writing code on the paper and asking somebody to run code. That is how I learned to code without money and no computer.
Learning what a for loop was for the fifth time. That one really hit home hahaha
I like this lady. Entertaining and relevant and honest. Thanks!
Thank you so much. This was inspiring; I had similar experience.
How freely she is speaking ! wow ❤️
What an amazing history! 👏🏻 My journey just started 2 months ago.
Where are you now on your developer journey ?
@@lemmyosborne1065 today I'm starting a React course 💪🏻
are good at JavaScript or wichever language you choose now? And how many hours a day u studied ?!
Awesome story and the journey was really hard and this is totally unbelievable that he did it.
I enjoyed this video a lot. But I think the title is a clickbait. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the video it's just title didn't match the content in the video.
Still an amazing video.
I dont even have time to watch this video as well😢
Thanks for sharing. This is what I needed right now, some sorted out perspective.
Same story mine - 2.5years - landed a admin job after 2 years of struggle after getting bored in a excel sp sheet paper engineer govt job
"You get in life what you have the courage to ask for." - Oprah Winfrey
"i was bouncing around with no direction" 9:39
That's a common curse in learning how to code i think!
Loved this, thanks so much for posting!
i hate to be in a lecture but somehow i watch this till end - dated Dec 12, 2021
I just started learning how to code.
I know some HTML and CSS but I'm scared to death of touching Javascript. This video gives me courage.
Awesome, how is your coding journey now?
Javascript is nice, you just need to approach it like a game
@scripteaze I guess in a sense you can imagine it to be a game where you don't die. Give yourself space to fail and to get stuck, you learn as you unstuck yourself. Set in your mind something you want to build and start building it, figuring it out as you go.
I feel your pain I’m in the same boat now
I want to learn java language online and have watched a few videos on it as well but can't get a proper grip.
You should also give lectures titled "How to Be an Amazing, Devoted Wife" and "How to Be a Grateful Husband".
I Love Her Attitude
haha I luv her! she has good timing for her lines, would b cool to watch more of her experiences as a developer!
