Don't think many accountants out there typically *love* doing their job... hell, most people in general don't have an interest in their jobs, it pays the bills.
This video is great just like all of your other videos. I personally grew up extremely poor though. Most of my family members worked blue collar jobs and they’d be lucky just to move up in those companies. I feel like a lot of people are privileged enough to have a choice. I know people who work long hours at rough labor jobs. They would give anything to be able to go to college and get an education. These people complaining about accounting have probably never had a shitty job that would make you appreciate a job that is just inside and stable. I am not the best at math but for me the stability is enough because I’ve witnessed the struggle.
You sure? Tons of college grads work at walmart and Starbucks because they did exactly what you did, got a college education cause they didn't want to do the" dirty" jobs. Well, life sucks and just because you went to college doesnt change anything. Perhaps will make it worse now that you have 100k loans to pay back..
Girl, I completely understand! My family occupations consist of tile settlers, house painters, caregivers, construction workers, and farm laborers. I grew up with the bare necessity and was raised to be grateful for it. My mom made about $28k a year and raised myself and my brothers on her own, with no government assistance. Because of this, I was raised more on needs than wants. Accounting may seem dry and boring, and some areas people can be paid on the lower end but to what I have witnessed in my life and my families, they would be beyond ecstatic to make about $45k a year.

@BlameItOnVanity the reasons you stated are why I want to go back to school for accounting. I am scared to enroll, but seeing others in the same situation and taking the step encourages me.
Always amazing to hear from you. I switched careers from a science field. I've had an interest in the financial field all my life and decided accounting was the way to get started. After taking all the accounting classes and interning in public accounting, I really liked/loved the work! I truly enjoyed it, but many people i speak to TRY to convince me that i'm just saying that. They think i am either lying to them or lying to myself! For some reason, society has painted a picture of accounting as something you just do to earn money, but i think it really takes a certain type of person to enjoy accounting and there are people who truly enjoy it. Unfortunately, many get into it for the wrong reasons like what you described, and unlike other fields, it has less filters that take out the people who really shouldn't have pursued the field. It's really great to hear from someone who has stayed motivated in accounting and continue to enjoy their career in accounting. Thank you for sharing all your career thoughts, experiences, and advice!
I definitely agree with a lot of these points. I think taking an accounting class or two during college should definitely help determine if you’re interested in the field or if you’re in it for the wrong reasons. I took it for 2 years in high school and didn’t mind it at all. Still on the fence if I want it as a career but that doesn’t mean I can’t go into another business related field. Great video! 🙌🏽
My goal today was to find out more about what the work and working environment in the accounting business were like, and if I would like a job in this area. I found this video, and every word out of your mouth made me happier and happier. I need a desk job, love routine, and high on my priorities list is to have a steady and reliable career. I am perfectly fine with doing simple-ish math, especially when it's routine, and frankly accounting sounds very similar to what I already do at my part-time job, which I don't mind at all. Time to sign up for that associates in accounting and finance...
It is. But you should try solving the problems. Then maybe you would realize that there are times when have absolutlely no idea what to input in your calculator 🙃
I truly like accounting. I don't mind sitting, working on a computer, i love numbers, and I understand that is a lot of work. I currently work in public accounting, specialized in governmental accounting, and even though I like my job, i want to try other areas of accounting, since this is my first job. It really feels meaningful since I work in the accounting and audit assistance of the financial statements of the central government, but I commute and drive almost 4 to 5 hours per day, and it has affected my health. I was recently diagnosed with a chronic disease, and now my priorities have shift. I can't be on a desk that long. I am thinking of looking for a job where I live, to minimize the time spent driving/sitting, either in taxes or financial accounting, because I want the experience of other areas, and take care of my health. But they don't pay as much, even though I am a CPA. Anyways my rant is because I am in the middle of a shift in my career and is a bit stressful, but I have realized that accounting is a career that takes a lot of effort and responsibility, but is certainly important. So i believe this is a love/hate relationship, but more love LOL.
I'm in similar position but an accounting student.... my health is needing to be the priority now.... and sitting at my computer to do accounting home work is becoming unbearable and anxiety inducing..... but when I actually sit down, focus and get in the flow I enjoy it. I am often complaining how I am so tired of sitting at my computer... but that is most jobs.... my bf works in CS... so It's even duller
@@Cash4Fruit Wow i can tell you that I understand you. Since this post, I quit my job, focused on my health since it really declined during that time, and then started studying again, law school. Now i spend more time sitting. Recently diagnosed with another condition that affects my eyes and is pretty serious. What I can tell you is that feeling good makes all the difference and should be our priority. As a person that feels tired a lot, with autoimmune diseases and a recent heavy treatment, I can tell you, do the stuff needed to feel better, to have the energy you need. Everything else will fall into place. Take care!
Carol Sepulveda Soto How is law school going? Seems like quite the commitment considering you already have your CPA. Kudos! What made you make the switch?

@@mariolastepaniuk4957 thank you for reaching out. I am now a licensed attorney and CPA, working as a Corporate and Tax Attorney for more than a year now. I currently work fulltime from home. In my position i get to combine both of my professions and i love it. I found that i really don't love many areas of the law, like criminal or civil law, but love this specialized niche of CPA attorneys that help businesses stay in compliance, assist in their business transactions, contracts, incorporation of their businesses, and provide business and tax advisory services. It's a lot of work, it is stressful, but i enjoy it alot. i am now a CPA, attorney and notary public, that gets to use all three licenses. i believe that accounting and law are a really good mix. But wont recommend the law school debt and stress if you dont see yourself working it. Even though, it gives great professional advantages in the job market. So i would say go for it. Wish you the best.
Im a dishwasher going to school for accounting. I love my job literally because its the same thing over and over. I graduated in Accounting but I haven't landed a job yet. I didn't do any internships and I'm discouraged that I'm not going to be qualified for the job even though I have a BS in Accounting. I recently put in some applications for a full charge bookkeeper for the experience. Is that a good idea, or am I wasting my degree doing that?
Any experience is necessary and useful. They can be a stepping stone and experience for something else in the future. You can also, check if you can start studying for the CPA, or another certification. My first experience was leading for a number of years, during my BS, and creating a team to manage the accounting of my church, when it started. I wasn't paid to do it, but it represented some good skills, that helped me get, after graduating, a really good job. Hope you find something soon! Best of luck!
@@ImFabulous23 you could just do your macc and actually get internships and network while in the program. think of it as one last (expensive) senior year to learn more and get another opportunity for a job plus u get a masters.
Watching this video gave me more of a reason to pursue accounting! I can not wait. I currently work in billing in the dental field but I’m currently going to school for accounting. In my department you are required to be at a desk all day and while others complain, I get lost in my work and loose track of how late I’m in the office trying to get ahead. I feel like accounting is the best career choice for me the more I hear about other accountants’ experience in the field. So thank you!
I am interested in accounting but I am not passionate about it. I am majoring in accounting and though I think it is nice to know all about the principles of GAAP and financial statements, I do not see myself doing accounting for the rest of my life. I probably should reconsider.
I am a professional accountant. I even post accounting and finance videos on TH-cam under Accounting Feed channel.... and it's been great. No regrets joining the profession.
Love this video, after seeing this video, it makes me realize all the reasons you listed are why accountant job is appealing to me. I would love to sit for all day long and work as a professional, I like numbers as well as stability. Thanks for sharing your idea on this, I did watched Linda’s video before, it kinda makes me question my choice a little bit after watching Linda’s video. Now I think I’m on the right path.
I’m a pharmacy tech and currently looking for another whole different career but I really don’t know with which one to go for. You know that Pharmacy Tech is a job where you interact with people all day, and Im an introvert so I really don’t like dealing with people 90% of the time. I noticed how I rather sit down in a corner and archive prescriptions rather than interacting with patients and stuff. Would you recommend someone like me to study Accounting?
Accounting is every introverts dream. I originally went to school for nursing, but I came to a realization... I am a introvert . As much as I rather be a nurse... it’s more practical being in accounting. I am a people person to an extent but I get drained over too much socializing. In the medical field being Outgoing is key so us introverts will be DRAINED & BURNED OUT super quick.. Although, you’re still gonna have to communicate daily lol it wouldn’t be as bad.
I didn't like maths and still got into accounting and got into Pwc but left accounting after 5 years and got into investment banking and still don't really like maths but that's what calculators are for. I left accounting mainly because of the weak salary and low bonus.
Math is only like 20% of it. It more of applying concepts and analyzing data. Making decisions based on raw data and following rules. For example Tax Law, making sure that taxes are filed appropriately. And so many other fields.
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm a senior in high school thinking about majoring in accounting, because l love handling money and budgets! All of the things you described, I actually really like the idea of! This was very helpful!
Ugh so true... working in the industry in nyc and a lot over time... even over 200 hrs in Jan and Feb... so burnt out... low pay... really don’t know why had I chosen accounting in the very beginning...
Also i feel like accounting is becoming such a meaningless job now...cuz the salary is very low compare with what we export... but it could easily burn ppl out... if the base salary could be raised up legally... that would be worth it lolll...
Damn....I'm really having trouble deciding...I have had thoughts about switching my major into accounting for the money but also because math is my best subject and love how easy it comes to me opposed to other school subjects, on the other hand I don't feel like sitting in one spot ALL DAY and starting at a screen ALL DAY daily just so my eyes can hurt. This is difficult for me to make a final decision
Do you mind doing a video in which an Accounting degree can be leveraged besides audit, advisory and tax? The math in Accounting isn’t hard but it is VERY tedious and a lot of people can’t handle that. I also started off wanting the $$ and stability but after taking my first principles class I honestly fell in love with it.
I don’t know much about accounting specifically. But I enjoy learning about different financial things, like retirements, stocks, loans etc. is accounting for someone like me?

Jovial Juanita I believe they are all routine to an extent - if you are doing Data entry then yes, it will become repetitive. Good thing is that you'll become efficient at your task and eventually learn short cuts etc. Bad thing is that - that is where many Accountants become bored and start looking for another Accounting job with more challenging task.
I don't like math but I still love the subject. So should I still not do it? I'm changing careers and I chose accounting and people always say that "But you don't like math?" So am I crazy?
No I don't think you're crazy. Accounting is obviously very numbers focused but it's not just calculations. There's analyzing of what the numbers mean which goes more into how the business is running. So it's more than just math - you just have to tolerate dealing with formulas (in Excel) hehe
I like your videos! I think many people do like it but jobs are hard to find now. There is outsourcing to India & automation that threatens thousands of accounting positions. I worked 20 years in the field and had to get out. No one hires older workers in accounting anymore and was restructured out of a job at age 50 and was literally blown away and out. Now I do night shift work at the airport in air cargo. Why this? There are 10 x as many people in the field than there are jobs. And in Canada we have few head offices left and no h/o no job. I was faced with a catastrophic job situation and now am employed at the airfield.
Typically will work for a few different managers. As you build strong working relationships, you may be able to work with a particular one more over time.
@@WithStephie i rather work for different people and avoid seeing the same managers over and over. but i assume you want to stick with the same person for a stable job?

Cause you never know how worse maybe ur next job might be. But yea if only maybe she can work from home with accounting but who knows
Steph, are there any 50+ year old rookies trying to get into the profession? Is it even worth it for someone that old? Please feel free to be honest, you won't be a hurtin me feelins.
To be honest is no , because too much competition these day , and you can not compete with young people and most of the employers are prefer young guys , because they are quicker .
I work in the accounting field (non-CPA) and if its something that you really want to do, its definitely doable and worth it. I graduated college with a guy in his late 40s.
am sorry but accounting doesn't deal with difficult math (it's just adding and subtracting) but principles understanding, so it's something anyone can do
I'm an Accounting major. The first accounting classes are fun but some of the later classes will make a few individuals change their mind... unfortunately that's been my experience. Intermediate accounting classes make me hate the subject. Also you have to be REALLY bad at math to hate accounting solely for this reason. If you understand Alegebra 2 you're good.
@@l2209 aye nice to hear from an accounting major. Ya wrote this comment during intermediate 2. Looking back on those tough classes honestly I'm happy to graduate with Accounting degree because it challenged me and we can get good jobs now.
Is Accounting really not for you if you aren't that great at math? I liked the idea of becoming one just because I think I do think I would enjoy finding where companies should cut their spending, and where they can save money. I do that daily in my life and enjoy it. So why not do it as a job is what I asked myself. But I am not so great with math and numbers in my head, does that really matter? I figured accountants just would use calculators to help them get through there days. Unless she is saying calculators are forbidden in an accounting job and you are required to solve the problems in your head only? In which case, yeah, accounting wouldn't be for me. Is that true? You can't use calculators in accounting at all?
Coming from never working in an office environment and I spent over ten years in customer service then I went back to school and I got my accounting degree and got a job. I didn't enjoy it at all. I'll list why you shouldn't go into accounting in my opinion. I'm not a anal person. I don't enjoy strict rules. I like freedom to do my work. You can't have freedom people are very routine and don't like to change it. I don't stress easily but everyone in accounting does. I never had a job before where senior management was treated like celebrities. They can literally do whatever they want and I cant do anything I want. People are very impatient to train you. They are doing their work and training you simultaneously. They act like you should know how to be in an office when I've never had to use a copier machine in my life or email ten or more people daily and chase people down for signature approvals etc. Why cant people just sign things they're suppose to sign. I thought I was the new employee. sigh help.....
Sometime you have to work with things you don’t like. Nothing is easy these days. Once you have a strong mentality, you can just quit accounting and do something else and still be successful.
I bring out this point, if you are unwilling to relocate to a city with many head offices you will not find a job anymore. And salaries in Canada are between 14$ and $19/hr for full f/s. In Canada accounting is a useless field

Accouting is not just math and calculating. In fact, accounting really made things even more complicated than never. Alot of compliance you need to follow especially in big japanese firm.
Accounting math is easy af.
It is. But you should try solving the problems. Then maybe you would realize that there are times when have absolutlely no idea what to input in your calculator 🙃
No one said the math was hard.
@@lordjoey9505 i don't get your point
@@storytime6469 this was towards @louyth7. No one said the math was difficult.

@carolsepulvedasoto8709 Hi there, I see it's been 4 years since this post. How have you been? How is your health? I hope you're doing well. Hope you're good, sending love ✨️🙌🏼
Was thinking about investment banking to make the big bucks but then I realized whats the point in making a shit ton of money if I'll hate my life and have no energy or sanity to enjoy my wealth? might as well make 60k in a low stress environment so i can actually enjoy my free time.
The kitchen is rough. Dish especially. No one I know has made it out w/out burn out or PTSD (like my husband). Read what Anthony Bourdain had to say about the kitchen and "soft skills." This will help you sell yourself at the job interviews. Good luck man
1) If you don’t like math.
2) if you are a person who don’t like a routine.
3)if you don’t like working on a computer or a laptop.
4)if you don’t like sitting on a desk majority of the time.
5)if you are only going to accounting for the money you should not do it.

The 5th point was a personal attack 😭
Great video, Steph!
If anyone’s top priority in the accounting job search is work/life balance they should consider government work! I’m spoiled with my hours ;) but the pay is slightly below average for accounting. Just throwing that out there for anyone reading the comments.
Plus you get a pension... Its worth alot more in the long run.
I don’t think a $50K+ difference is slightly below average
Thanks for the advice!
Government jobs have great benefits it *could be worth it if you dont mind making a few thousand less than other jobs

@@Strewgle yes, but there are SOO many. SAP is common but industry/firm specific, so it's super annoying when they list that. Don't waste your time racking up random stuff is my point. Tailor it to your career & take suggestiona w/ a grain of salt.

@Celo One of my friends is an accounting assistant at a law firm and seems to have an amazing work-life balance compared to the horror stories I've been hearing from public. That's my dream lol
I have yet to take my first accounting class and I am nervous to find out how I truly feel about it. Math is my favorite subject, I love routine, I don't mind working in a desk all day and sitting on a desk for hours (i've always dreamed of a desk job). Thanks your video gave me confidence!
Carol Sepulveda Soto Thanks for the advice! I decided to pursue my mba and look forward to studying for my CPA afterwards

Thanks for making me realize that i'm absolutely going to LOVE accounting ❤️

Hey guys im just a teen passing by. So ive been reading the comments and apprently itz a boring math job is that right?
Math is only like 20% of it. It more of applying concepts and analyzing data. Making decisions based on raw data and following rules. For example Tax Law, making sure that taxes are filed appropriately. And so many other fields.

Its NOT about the reasons to decide whether something for you or not. Its about what YOU LIKE, ENJOY DOING! The rest- doesn't matter, its NOT about well or not well paid jobs- ITS ABOUT SOMETHING YOU LIKE DOING ...FOR FREE! Gosh no. I like art and psychology. No jobs that pay well for that and I don't want to exploit my hobbies
Is there any accounting jobs that arent routine? I'm an accounting major but I don't like routine
Jose Garay thanks for your response
Try International Taxation at one of the Big 4. Definitely not routine. I have an entire vlog dedicated to it.

Definitely getting your CPA will get you there

I was faced with a catastrophic job situation and now am employed at the airfield.
you work as a public accountant, do you work for the same office same manager? or do you work for different people?
Typically will work for a few different managers. As you build strong working relationships, you may be able to work with a particular one more over time.
@@WithStephie i rather work for different people and avoid seeing the same managers over and over. but i assume you want to stick with the same person for a stable job?

I am senior now majoring in accounting. The same exact thing happened to me. Intermediate made me realize I’m not that passionate about it.

It would be great if you could make a video about how accounting school work or project look like🙏🙏
Coming from never working in an office environment and I spent over ten years in customer service then I went back to school and I got my accounting degree and got a job. I thought I was the new employee. sigh help.....
, do you know anybody that graduated with a bachelors in accounting, and then they were unable to get a job?
Yeah , a lots .
Yes
Sometime you have to work with things you don’t like. Nothing is easy these days. Once you have a strong mentality, you can just quit accounting and do something else and still be successful.
Completely agree 👏👏👏👏
I bring out this point, if you are unwilling to relocate to a city with many head offices you will not find a job anymore. And salaries in Canada are between 14$ and $19/hr for full f/s. In Canada accounting is a useless field

Accouting is not just math and calculating. In fact, accounting really made things even more complicated than never. Alot of compliance you need to follow especially in big japanese firm. If you had a mistake, they will make you a very hard time to do the correction. Need to justify here and there... In short, accounting is for people whom love to stay overtime and make life complicated as much as possible.
You need to be very organised and to be good in communication

why else would someone go into accounting other than money and stability? lmao those are literally the only two reasons.
I hear ya I am in the same boat and pondering that myself. I find it sad because that is the only reason people and get accounting majors or stem majors or finance or business degrees is the money and stability. 5-10 years later you have the money but your miserable because all you did was work and burnt out of the drama and the long hours and the cutthroat mindset to get to the top.
