Dude, the reason everyone in the comments is getting black screens while updating BIOS is because you didnt say to format the flashdrive to FAT32.... you cant just put a BIOS file on ANY Thumb drive (flashdrive) It needs to be a good size AND be FAT32 file system , cant use it as is. AM i right Tek?
Thank you! I had no problems with my machine. But I decided to update from 1004 to the 2003 release, because of all the warnings to Skylake. I use an Asus Z170 Pro Gaming with an i7 6700K with Linux. It worked just like you showed it in the video. I downloaded a zip-archive from the ASUS site which includes the CAP file: Z170-PRO-GAMING-ASUS-2003.CAP sha256sum: 3052520f1ca9cb49fd92d1cfdcfb3a3ff979693f771ebeea5185d0b72ddbb826 sha1sum: 95868ea21dec7af0891f03ab5c9a6a90e4b54151 md5sum: 381dc025a6b109f86b5c77a99e6a44ef
Thank you so much. It removed the lag when I play any game (even minesweeper had lag spikes) and now task manager sees 8 cores instead of 4, i7 6700k btw with gtx1080
Holy shit dude, I have the same mobo and cpu combination, and I get input lag in every game I play, and on the desktop. Did updating the BIOS fix this for you? I read somewhere that this combination of hardware was causing issues, but nowhere has it said about updating the BIOS, just wondering if it worked for you
Couldn't see the USB drive in Bios so navigated to the file which was also on my desktop (while still in Bios) and flashed the Bios from there. Worked perfectly. Thanks!

How about USB Flashback? How does that work? I got a new i7-7700k cpu and a z170 mainboard which means i need to update my eufi to be able to use that cpu. Is it enough to just put the .cap file on a fat32 stick?
Wait. doesn't the Flash drive have to be formatted to FAT32 before flashing the BIOS? Or can i just simply drag and drop the .CAP file to the empty flash drive?
Also, Since you have to go through the motions twice to complete the update, I should keep the USB stick in the computer until I boot into the OS AFTER the new BIOS update? - 5:04 Does it really take 3-4 minutes for the new BIOS screen to appear after reboot?

Hey Tek, long time viewer here. I have a bit of an issue.... I just built a new gaming pc, it has an ASUS Z170A motherboard in it. I didn't update the BIOS because everything is working so great I didn't think my system needed a BIOS update....Lately, I've been getting memory issues with games like Arma 3, like the game crashed during loading and says something like "Memory referenced at 0000x0000000, memory can not be written". Also, im having some display issues on my older Acer 1600x 900 monitor ( I when i switch to the native 60hz refresh rate, the resolution chnages, and its HUGE. SHould i updater my BIOS, is it dangerous??
also, in CPU-Z, everything checks out normal. i have 16gb of ram at 2666MHz ( its displayed at 1333MHz, due to double data rate-DDR) Im afraid i will brick my computer on a BIOS update, and it may not even fix the memory, display issues...
I have the z170A mobo. I am on the ropes of getting the 7700k instead of the 6700k. But will my mobo work with the 7700k I'm out of the box install or will it need a bios update to work?
please help me I update and even after 10 minutes I had a black screen so with a cmos reset I can go to the bios but if I restart the system the black screen comes again
I'm following exactly how you do it and when I click the file I want to 'read' it says that it is not a BIOS file. My USB is in FAT32 format and I have selected the correct OS and MoBo version. What is going wrong?
I have the Z170-P D3 version 0220. And I have tried all versions from the oldest (which is still newer than my current version) to the latest and it always says ''Selected file is not a BIOS''.
Hello! I have a problem with your metod, i have an Asus A68HM-K And i Dont seem to have the Tool Option on the Bios Menu, How can i update mi Bios? Thank you very much.
+Carlos Eduardo download the BIOS update and put it on a cd that has nothing else on it other then the single file for the BIOS, then get into the bios do the same thing Kreep did by resetting everything and then start the boot from your cd/dvd. thats kinda the same thing that we do on our z170 chips so it should work for you, but if you aren't sure on yourself find someone who works with pc's and maybe he'll help
I have a maximus ranger and I didn't have to do it twice only once. The bios says its the one i downloaded 1.001 or something like that when i loaded into the bios. does that mean i did something wrong or is it fine?
Heya! I have the same Motherboard and CPU. I have 231 version and wanted to update to latest, 803. Did the update from BIOS, everything was ok but after restart nothing happens. The screen is black even after 10 minutes. I had to reset the CMOS to be able to enter BIOS and go back to 231. Any ideas what's the problem? Thanks.
+TimmY T I have the exact same problem on my mobo. I RMA'd it and tried it again, and it's happening again. I'm currently RMA'ing this one now, too. Fucking Asus needs to fix their shit -- this shouldn't be happening to people. Very, VERY disappointed in them.
+Peter I di nothing for a while and last month I've updated to 1000 something version and it worked without problems. Another thing that changed was the addition of a gpu. When I had problems I was using the integrated graphics. Hope you solve this. It was really annoying.
Anas Hassan When turning on the pc press f2 to enter the bios setting and you can see the version there, if u have the latest version you can if not you need update
I need help after updating everything went smoothly .. suddenly forgot to restore defaults before updating .. now my defaults seem to be my pervious setup .. is there a way to fix this ??
+kreeper24 DYI Pc Mods & Tech Thats the problem ... when I reset to default it doesn't give me the default it gives what was set on the previous bios version .. so now the default = overclocked settings .. i did it several times.
+Mutassem ALSulaiman do u know how to reset the motherboard? Cmos If u have the option that is great, if not unplug the power cord and remove the little battery that is attached to the motherboard, give good 2 minutes and plug back
+kreeper24 DYI Pc Mods & Tech worked by removing batteries .. then after first reboot .. it goes back to that settings again .. I didn't even touch the bios settings
Those complaining about the music stop acting like sissyfied pancake ninjas and be thankful you got this video, Kreeper great vid, but can you do an updated one. I did the steps but I don't get cap files, I get .exe files and a number of them and I don't know which ones to save or flash. Thanks in advance Edit: disregard I found it in a zip file within another file.
Followed the instructions, but screen turned permanently black afterwards. Panicked a bit, but managed to fix it by removing one of my two RAMs from the motherboard. Then I had to reinstall my sound driver as I got into windows (I have a dedicated sound card) and things now work like they should. Will try checking out the other RAM slots on the motherboard tomorrow, trying to get the other RAM in. Might make a CMOS reset, but for now a single 8gb RAM will suffice. The reason I did this somewhat risky BIOS update in the first place is because my computer sometimes randomly freezes during gaming, and I know it's not from overheating. Hopefully this will fix those issues.
Neon Catstronaut I've yet to experience any more freezes after I updated. It might have solved the issue, but can't say for sure, as freezes were quite rare. But it looks promising. Might also have something to do with me just using one ram stick atm (due to the pc not starting using two). I'm considering rolling back the update or flashing an older version, but it kinda works and I'm lazy, so...
When i updated my BIOS i only had to update is ones cus you siad "you are gona need to do this twise" i guess that's cus i use a asus z170-A maybe!? plz answer just so i know that's ok. :)

+AtomikalZiggy this could be an option, sadly i am not familiar with the bios of your board
Thanks! Great video :) Helped alot
Awesome!
I have a maximus ranger and I didn't have to do it twice only once. The bios says its the one i downloaded 1.001 or something like that when i loaded into the bios. does that mean i did something wrong or is it fine?
Just be sure its the latest bios, in your bios settings and on the site
if the system boots up fine and on the bios it says the right one im fine right??? Sry if it's a dumb question this is my first build.
+Aloycius Jn yes you are fine, your motherboard is not the same as mine, so that could be the reason why your process was different then mine :)
I have the msi z170a pc mate and an i5 7600k, no skylake. Will it work without a bios update?
#freekekistan #topkek yes
I decided to turn off and turn on it again. now I have video. it shows me overclock failed message, bios 1801, wtf? what should I do?
+Rico MegaSuper did you tried updating the bios? or what is going on
I have an ASUS Z170m Plus, can i put an i5 7600k with updating the BIOS using this method?
Ramiro Bogado E. yes you can
Thanks.
+TimmY T did you do it the way i did it?
+kreeper24 Pc Mods & Tech yes. Update was successful and all was ok until the restart. Your USB stick was formatted as FAT or NTFS?
+TimmY T ntfs
+TimmY T I have the exact same problem on my mobo. I RMA'd it and tried it again, and it's happening again. I'm currently RMA'ing this one now, too. Fucking Asus needs to fix their shit -- this shouldn't be happening to people. Very, VERY disappointed in them.
+Peter I di nothing for a while and last month I've updated to 1000 something version and it worked without problems. Another thing that changed was the addition of a gpu. When I had problems I was using the integrated graphics. Hope you solve this. It was really annoying.
I just updated my ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard to the latest version. Thanks. Does that mean I can run the i7 7700k CPU?
DeathReaper04 yup

2:00 Music track please? Btw, nice video :D
i already have the latest version does that mean it can support kaby lake cpus?
YES
Merciful Hearts how do i know if my z170 is the latest version? mine is z170n gaming 5. can it run kaby lake without bios update?
Anas Hassan When turning on the pc press f2 to enter the bios setting and you can see the version there, if u have the latest version you can if not you need update
I ran my 7700k on my asus z170-a without a bios update, but overclocking hasnt worked so im updating it now
I need help after updating everything went smoothly .. suddenly forgot to restore defaults before updating .. now my defaults seem to be my pervious setup .. is there a way to fix this ??
Reset to default settings make sure u have the latest bios update and boot up
+kreeper24 DYI Pc Mods & Tech Thats the problem ... when I reset to default it doesn't give me the default it gives what was set on the previous bios version .. so now the default = overclocked settings .. i did it several times.
+Mutassem ALSulaiman do u know how to reset the motherboard? Cmos
If u have the option that is great, if not unplug the power cord and remove the little battery that is attached to the motherboard, give good 2 minutes and plug back
+kreeper24 DYI Pc Mods & Tech worked by removing batteries .. then after first reboot .. it goes back to that settings again .. I didn't even touch the bios settings
+Mutassem ALSulaiman as of now .. I'm forced to overclock 15% .. nothing can change that ..
Even though you said "This might be scary, dont worry" i was still shitting my pants. I know nothing about pc's and was like.....yep... im done
were you able to update your bios?
Tek Overclocked yes everything is up to date :P
Those complaining about the music stop acting like sissyfied pancake ninjas and be thankful you got this video, Kreeper great vid, but can you do an updated one. I did the steps but I don't get cap files, I get .exe files and a number of them and I don't know which ones to save or flash. Thanks in advance Edit: disregard I found it in a zip file within another file.
Can I copy the file to an external hard drive and run or just from usb?
I recommend USB stick though. Honestly i have not tried with a mechanical hard drive
+7aSSoOo th-cam.com/video/ew56etG6QYY/w-d-xo.html yes you can use an external hard rive watch my newest bios update
Do i have to install an OS before updating the BIOS?
+Leo Deras yes
downloded new bios, copied on stick, restarted pc, did the steps you did, install fails after pc reboots a few time...
Hopefully this will fix those issues.
what graphics card do you have?
Tek Overclocked I have a gtx 970
I have the same freezing issues with a gtx 960 and a Asus Z170A Pc Mate and a RM750x PSU. Did updating the BIOS solve the issues for you?
Neon Catstronaut I've yet to experience any more freezes after I updated. It might have solved the issue, but can't say for sure, as freezes were quite rare. But it looks promising. Might also have something to do with me just using one ram stick atm (due to the pc not starting using two). I'm considering rolling back the update or flashing an older version, but it kinda works and I'm lazy, so...
Thanks for the reply, good luck with the RAM issue.
you know how to turn off the breathing red light?
Option Available in "Ai suite 3"
nvm found it in bios
amigo el archivo descargado hay que descomprimirlo, espero respuesta gracias
When i updated my BIOS i only had to update is ones cus you siad "you are gona need to do this twise" i guess that's cus i use a asus z170-A maybe!? plz answer just so i know that's ok. :)
if you only had to do it once then you are ok as long as you boot up fine and are up to date with BIOS :)
Yeah it is!
Thank you for responding, I just wanted to make sure. ;)
Grate vid btw very informative and detailed.
you get a huge thumbs up for me. :)
can i do this with a i5-7600k ?
please help me
what kind of. acer monitor it?
how do i dedicate more ram to playing games using this bios? i have 16 GB of DDR4 ram pls help.
Not possible. your computer will just use the ram it has. If you have 16gb of ram and need more you need to buy more ram.
What if it dose not show my flash drive
Still black screened (no signal to monitor) with usb as Fat32. Correct bios of course. So pissed off.
