    A friend of mine comes from a family of poor sailors. Her grandmother was named "Maria" (very catholic family) but her parents, though capable sailors, were illiterate and accidentally spelt it "Marea" on the birth certificate. The girl wore the name proudly as her village was filled to the brim with Maria's (all very Catholic fisher families). Also, Marea literally means "sea" so it also fitted with her family's profession. She was the favourite grandmother of my friend and I recently gave her the idea of naming her daughter "Rhea" after Marea. It's one of my favourite girl names.

    Omg so, I HATE my name (never liked my first name, my middle name is Lynne and I know FAR too many Lynns and I hate my surname because I hate my bio father). And I've been thinking of changing it for most of my life but never really found anything. The moment that Gray came up all I could imagine was the name "Rosalie Gray McDowell" (Rosalie has been my name crush for YEARS, and McDowell is my fiance's name) and It's so different from my name. It's very pretty, and it really has the vibe I want for myself. If I decide not to change my full name, I'd probably name a character in a story that or something because I love it.

      I was born with a name I hated too. I used to get bullied badly throughout primary school and high school because of it. I went through an identity crisis in my early 20’s and ended up changing it legally. Ironically “Rosalea” was my second first name (my first name was hyphenated) so I just go by that name now or “Rosie” for short.
      I gently encourage you to do it if it’s making you feel that way about it. You deserve to feel proud when your name is being called. The moment I changed my name... it changed my life! I finally felt free, happy and confident. Good luck and god bless. 🙏

    SJ! It’d be amazing to do a list of names that people have themselves but don’t like - either because they’re too out there, too common, can’t easily be pronounced, have been tormented at school or feel like it just doesn’t suit them. I love a unique name but my worst fear is giving my child a name they hate!

    Gosh, I must be an old traditionalist! I have an Isabelle Rose ( she’s 24 now, and I didn’t know anyone called Isabelle when she was born, and I thought it was a beautiful name). Then I have Amelia Lucy. She is 18. I was absolutely adamant that she would be called Louisa Mary, and I called her that all the time I was in hospital when she was born. My husband just couldn’t get used to it... I had a bit of a mad friend called Luisa at the time, and he just associated it with her. So baby had to be Amelia, my second choice. I still think it’s a beautiful name, even though it’s got really popular nowadays. My third girl is Jemima Louise Mary. Had Jemima on my list when first daughter was born,only didn’t use it because myself, my husband and she would have been all ‘J’s!’ Jemima has an extra middle name because my lovely grandmother died while I was pregnant with her, but I’ve always loved the name Louise, so she had to have both. I also have two gorgeous boys, but you will have all fallen asleep with boredom by now. Maybe I’ll share their names on or of SJ’s ‘boy’ posts. They are very traditional too, so don’t hold your breath!

    Instead of Kate maybe Carey or Carys? Catinca is a name I know because of an adorable child actress in the movie The Fall. I love the Scottish spelling of Mary, Mairi. Instead of Mae, maybe Faye? Joan as an alternative for Anne? Siân is the Irish form of Jane. Alternatives for Elizabeth; Elisheva, Evangeline, Eilish, Eugenie or even Azalais. Instead of Grace how about Luce, meaning light? Róisín, is an Irish name meaning little rose. Lucinda or Therese would be a good swap for Louise. I like the spelling Oona rather than Una.

    • @audrieking7109
      @audrieking7109 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MsBianca78 I think most people would think of the viola instrument first anyway, and that even has the same pronunciation as the spanish word (vee-oh-lah). I do also think one syllable can make a huge difference. Even in english, ripe vs rope vs rape all sound so different, even though it's just one letter. The different pronunciations also have slightly different inflections, where one has emphasis on the 'o' and the other on the 'a.' I actually asked my coworker from Mexico about "Vye-olah" and she did not think of the rape verb because it sounded so different to her. Sorry if I seem hostile, as I definitely do not mean to! I'm just trying to put forth different ideas in case people love the name :) To some, it sounds so different that I don't think it would remind them of that at all.

    I like long middle names with short first names and vice versa. I've been pondering the name Rosewyn/ Rosenwyn (meaning white rose) lately. It's close to Rose, but so unique and flowy. Virtue names as middle names are another favourite of mine. Joy is definitely a contender, and so is Hope and Faith. Grace I am on the fence about, since it has been kind of popular.
