Proper way for vivid implementation is for game developers to set exactly how game should look under vivid setting. From product standpoint, it’s kind of stupid to let end customers decide whether to potentially oversaturate colors of some game. End users should never have to deal with this issue in the first place.
Here's a little tip for if you turn off auto brightness, there's a built-in feature that dims the screen after 5 minutes (Both Docked and Handheld/Tabletop), so this can reduce the risk of your screen from burn-in. This feature can be disabled in TV Output in System Settings, but it's advised to keep it on if you have Automatic Brightness off.
The brightness issue was bothering me since I got my new Switch OLED but I couldn't find anybody else complaining about it on youtube or twitter or anywhere else until I found this video. This video also addressed an issue that I couldn't quite identify which was the 'too vivid' screen. I set it back to Standard and it looks much nicer now. Thanks for this video. Very helpful.

I disagree. With the saturation part. I think the default/regular switch colors look so bland and flat. I guess I could be used to more saturation from my TV, but I keep that at a minimum, I just like the enhanced colors. Everything just pops and is much more nice to look at. Is it more accurate? Maybe not, but most of these games (the ones I play) aren’t meant to be realistic. With the sound thing, yes, I hate it when people equate loudness to better sounding. The games don't support HDR and its unlikely the screen does either, its just an over-saturation mode. Samsung phones also do this, although the modern ones at least do support real HDR too.
I got the oled and can confirm that it is just over saturating the image. At least you can turn it off and the colors still look much nicer on standard than on the old switch. The laminated screen also makes a huge difference in terms of clarity.
it's just an oversaturation mode. a lot of the side-by-side comparison videos have been absolutely fucking dishonest they'll take a standard LCD switch which has no "Vivid - a.k.a oversaturated mode", and put it beside an OLED switch in "vivid - oversaturated mode" and they will say the most fucking retarded things like "omg the colors really pop".... like no shit bruh it pops because you artificially oversaturated them it's not even a fair comparison. I think it's situational. For very colorful games like Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Hyrule Warriors, turning off Vivid was much needed as it made the game look super oversaturated .
Vivid is the display with unmanaged colors stretched to the native gamut of the display. That’s why it looks like crap. Use Standard mode instead and your eyeballs will thank you. Don’t turn off Auto-Brightness, as you’ll greatly increase the risk of burn-in.
Try playing Mario 64 as an example on the Switch OLED with Vivid enabled, the colors are so extreme on max brightness that it literally hurts my eyes. I prefer standard because you can actually see more details and it's color accurate compared to the oversaturated vivid mode.
The vividness option has nothing to do with contrast. Its literally just oversaturating the colors. Non thinking customers usually prefer the look because "Da Red is more Redder and Da blues are more blue" so colors pop and are vibrant. But the "standard" mode is the picture accurate mode. Switching to standard is good advice as it automatically switches to standard upon being docked anyways and provides the most accurate image. Imagine being a nintendo mastering director. Same feelings for me. In the end the OLED is a luxurious item and I already regret buying it. I think it was greedy by me and not worth it. Once you put the screen in accurate color and correct brightness your only gain is the a bit more contrast and better black. While those are good things, its not that noticeable on such small screen. For instance going from LED TV to an OLED is night and day because of A) the Size of the tv and B) the HDR both of which you don't get with this new OLED switch. So yeah maybe I'm alone in this but I'm not impressed whatsoever.
I’m on the fence. And I need to make a decision soon. I’ve read that it’s easier to read text if you play games like tropico and the like. What do you think?
The better blacks are definitely very noticable. Also no visible white light from the backlight and smaller black bars around the screen just look way better. You just have to forget about the burn in.. My friend uses his PC on an OLED TV for years now and nothing ever happened.
It reminds of when you go to someone elses house and they have the TV set to the default vivid setting with and motion plus set to the max - it just looks weird
Many people prefer their TV colors in the bluer range, but real life, movie theaters, professional color grading monitors are warmer. Personally I’m not interested in which looks immediately “better,” but which displays the game as the developers intended - the actual, specific colors they selected. I suspect that this would be standard.
No issues with mine, OLED screens have the best contrast. Vivid mode, I have enjoyed on all games so far. The auto brightness as well. Cool PSA for those who it bothered
Here’s some info for the uninformed: OLED colours are actually (in a weird way) very slightly LESS ‘vivid’ than LED colours. If you took the exact same image and placed it on both a calibrated LED and calibrated OLED screen and compared the two side-by-side, you would notice how the OLED looks very slightly less ‘vivid’ than the LED, but the OLED image has much deeper contrast and the colours themselves look a lot more ‘natural’, for lack of a better term. I don’t know the technical reason behind it but that’s how it is. The jump from LED to OLED (without any changes to the image) isn’t actually really THAT drastic. But once your eyes adapt to the natural colours and deep contrast of an OLED, you can never go back.
Having the screen on full brightness with vivid mode is so beautiful but risky getting burn in. But I guess as long as there motion on the screen shouldn’t burn in. If I have to leave the switch alone for a awhile I just put it on standby
Seems that Nintendo must have noticed this potential issue as well & thus added this feature. Glad they are a company that thoroughly tests things. Which is why it's so surprising to me that they didn't also add some extra Burn-In protections for the OLED model, such as perhaps a screen saver option or just a simple screen shut-off option after some inactivity time. The only way the screen shuts off on the Switch is if it goes to sleep which is kind of strange as most devices have it to where just the screen itself can be shut off. Very strange indeed, & makes you wonder if this particular OLED panel is perhaps highly resistant to Burn-In. Am sure we will get more reports on this several months down the road as users have had a chance to have more time with it.
This is being blown out of proportion. Unless you spend a good 3-5 hours with a static image, which is practically impossible on switch unless you turn off every feature preventing this circumstance, you’ll be fine. OLED tech has come quite a ways from the days when burn in was common and easy to do mistakenly. Keep in mind simply the added features to prevent it should be enough. Don’t turn them off.
I feel this is highlighted lately with Linus Tech Tips doing a feature on his TV getting burn-in. What people need to understand is he was using it as a monitor for long periods, which is not what OLED TVs are designed for. I use mine a lot for the same game and haven't noticed the HUD burnt in yet despite also using HDR all the time and its approaching three years old.
its actually possible. games with HUDs are basically static images which you can easily play for more than 3 hours straight. Considering how nintendo prefer using old version of techs to save a buck there is a high chance the OLED screen is not the new one were it has anti burn in features.
Thank you finally someone I can agree with, higher contrast makes every image look sharp and crisp, and that mixed with the darkness of the black makes everything so nice to look at on the oled, it's like the difference between bread and toast, bread is soft and light while toast in darker and crisper
@@basherblast Exactly 💯 after owning a oled tv everything I play and watch on it is just amazing!! I could never go back to anything other than oled lol have a good one!
I thought the auto brightness setting is terrible. Muddy and washed out. Why that's the default is beyond me. Burn in on a tiny device that has a short battery life is a non-issue. On another note thanks for bringing Toree to my attention, that little game looks cool! And it's cheap I heard only a buck!
Vivid works best in darker games, but in the OS itself it's not that good. Especially the eShop looks bad in Vivid mode. However enabling the Dark mode improves it, and most games do look better.
It would be awesome if someone created a Qled/Oled hybrid. It would give you the best natural color and brightness (Qled) and the best darks (Oled). Unfortunately, it would be expensive.
@@TheAmazingRaptor check with them in-store. In my local stores the new OLED systems were not listed online, so it showed none available when I checked online before stopping by the store.
I kind of disagree, games like Breath of the Wild are way too flat in color, and is so bland. Sure, that’s what they intended, but it’s just too bland imo. And games like Mario kart, the colorful rainbow road looks so much more colorful and nice
Oh man thank goodness. I thought it was just me. The second I finished my set up and got to the main screen, I was thinking oh no! This hurts my eyes! What have I done? The experience seems to vary from person to person, but for me, vivid mode is painful to look at.
First of all, the screen looks odd because you are the using the default white theme. Second of all, the OLED’s Auto-full brightness setting has been fixed with a patch. Third of all, the correct way to set your Nintendo Switch’s brightness settings: go to a dim lit room & find the “manual”brightness zone that is on par with the auto-brightness no longer changing brightness upon turning it on in the same dim lit room. That should be used saved as the default for dim or dark rooms., with auto-brightness off. In well lit areas, do not change your preferred setting, as in these areas only the brightest setting would help, the Auto-brightness should only be used to turn the brightness to full in these areas, which it does in well lit areas/outdoors. My suggestion: When playing in dim to dark areas, use your preferred “manually set” brightness settings with Vivid turned on, to take full advantage of the OLED. When playing in well lit areas/outdoors, use Auto brightness with Standard Colors, while not touching your preferred set setting.
The Vivid setting is definetly too much, some people say only on "some" games it can be overbearing but for me just sitting in the menu i was wondering why marios hat was bleeding red.
It was super bright and intense in a good way for me :) I’ve left auto on because I always do, tend to keep brightness about halfway, and I’ve loving Vivid for Tetris Effect, TOEM, Metroid Dread, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Splatoon 2, ARMS etc. Colourful games and dark pencil lines are stunning. Tetris Effect is unbelievable.
Also just turned the auto feature off on my standard Switch too and it’s much brighter and clearer as well. I think the standard and vivid option is OLED only too
Have you never known about the auto brightness this whole time? Or even the quick menu/changing the brightness in general? (which you can also do in the system settings page)
The auto brightness adds a filter to the screen that makes it look grainy, turn it off and adjust manually. Now when it comes to the other options it’s up to the viewer if they like vivid or regular, neither is a wrong choice.
I noticed the crazy contrast on my coworkers switch immediately after picking it up and didn’t enjoy the way it looked. I managed to score an OLED switch from Best Buy yesterday(my first switch ever) so I’ll be sure to turn the contrast down once I pick mine up
that brightness is because oled is ment for tv's and those oled tv's most of the sime have light coming from the back of the screen instead of lcd screens that need thicker screens because they have a back light instead
I've never actually seen an OLED screen before, is it still easy to distinguish the individual pixels like a normal Switch's/most other handheld consoles display? I know it's probably kind of weird but I really prefer having pixels stand out more than them blending together like a phone screen or one of those high res screen replacement kits for older handhelds. I know this is pretty stupid and that it has more to do with the resolution of the screen but I thought I might still ask.
I’ve had it for 4 days bc i got it early and the difference from the original switch is massssiveee! Like the screen feels bigger and so much crisper. the pixels look was better and it has a new feel in color. Everything seems brighter and closer to the screen… like in the old one it felt like the screen was all the way down in it. Idk if that makes sense but yeah it’s beautiful tbh
@@donaldallenhill That makes total sense, the greater the contrast, the more our brain will interpret it as 3D rather than a flat 2D image. Its why watching HDR movies on a good screen almost makes up for not having 3D support any more.
Yeah it's about the same as the old switch in terms of how the pixels look. It still is the same resolution after all, not like a 4k panel displaying 720p.
I have a Vizio tv, I have my color setting at about 70-75, depending on the console. The switch vivid mode comes close to it but not quite as colorful. So 100 on the tv will look ridiculously over saturated
Dude hopefully this works for me, just bought a switch 12 days ago and I absolutely love it. Although i love it i just can’t seem to be right about the screen being that dimmed.
100x this! Also THANK YOU... for calling it "Nintendo Switch Oh-El-Eh-De" and not say it as "ohhh-led". Since without the "O" it is still pronounced "el-eh-de" and NOT "led"!!!
Hmmm i honestly didn't notice any of this being a direct time switch user but the fact you mention images being possibly burned into the screen makes me wish I got a regular switch. I also saucer seizures and keep the brightness scaled down a lot. People hate looking at my phone while I'm equally blinded by theirs.
Running my OLED in standard not vivid, its seems more colour accurate to me in standard. Then again I do a lot of TH-cam on my Switch, The PSP also had this option and I also disabled that back in the day. Always use auto brightness. Did on mt older Switch
That was according to later models, its actually comparable to the launch model only with much better contrast which makes it appear brighter to the eyes. Personally, I've never had an issue with the screen on the launch model, its night/day better than some of the garbage Nintendo used on their older consoles.
It's set to Vivid out of the box. I'm going to leave it as is. Nintendo says to set it to Standard if you want an LCD look, which totally defeats the purpose of OLED.
the purpose of OLED is for realistic black levels. and about what nintendo said, I'm willing to bet that it was a marketing decision. TV manufacturers do this all the time. they will turn up the sharpness, contrast and saturation settings to a high amount make their screens stand out more on the market shelves. And honestly, I think this is exactly what Nintendo is doing here. Nothing is stopping them from adding a "vivid" option to their standard LCD switch, but they only want to put that in their OLED models so that when people make comparison videos, they can cheat and say that "this image looks better because of OLED technology", when in reality they pretty much tinkered with the contrast and saturation values. A fair comparison would be standard switch LCD vs OLED switch in standard mode. But that wouldn't be as marketable, and won't get many clicks and views on TH-cam videos.
I just bought this console mostly for the exclusive games, after years of using a ps4/ps5 I feel that the screen defenately needs a 1080p resolution, otherwise is good and fun
Main Switch has auto brightness as well.. but i see no difference between standard and vivid.. atleast not with the homescreen (dark theme) and Shining Pearl anyhow.
This ignores that higher brightness isn't actually better. Just creates a false comparison if anything past "the screen gets x amount brighter" is claimed by changing this.
Ive noticed it, only very slight on mine. It could just be the laminating glue inside the screen, sometimes it takes 50-100 hours to fully go, crank the brightness to full and put a full white screen up for a few minutes each day. It should start to look correct when viewing straight on. 👍 If its really yellow then you could go for a replacement.
Just a preference I guess, if you like the flatter colors, or if you like the vivid popping colors, like me. Would you rather them force the vivid mode on you and not let you choose to have standard color mode? If not for the better colors, the bigger screen and deep blacks are much better anyway
Alright the reason why it's an oled and they made it for vivid looking image and alot I Mena alot of consumers like that including myself lol and I prefer a dimmer oled contrast image anyway of the week lol This is the way I look at it games aren't real so no need for strict accuracy let's liven it up ans make it awesomely colorful haha
exactly, it blatantly lies about the screen technology being used and fools people into thinking that the "vivid colors" are due to the OLED technology, when in reality it's because they tinkered with the contrast and saturation values. it's so dishonest when i see some comparison videos between the switch and the OLED switch

@@tylerfactura1984 Which one did you end up going with?
Yeah and most of the games are very pixelated
@@constantine5028 Yep
It reminds of when you go to someone elses house and they have the TV set to the default vivid setting with and motion plus set to the max - it just looks weird
Turning off auto brightness does that on the og switch too! :D
Toree 3D got a sequel? Gonna have to check that out
Yep, came out this week, $1 like the first.
Yea It’s great
Playing without vivid is crazy! I don't think I could ever go back to normal mode.
I think it's going to be something I change per game. Already vivid games look better on standard to my eyes...so most Nintendo first party.
Many people prefer their TV colors in the bluer range, but real life, movie theaters, professional color grading monitors are warmer.
Personally I’m not interested in which looks immediately “better,” but which displays the game as the developers intended - the actual, specific colors they selected. I suspect that this would be standard.
Vivid is unnatural looking,it hurts my eyes.
Nice fix, thanks Zion!
I just got an OLED the other day and can confirm it has a built in screen saver, saw it kick on when I was at the home screen waiting on a download
@@Joe_Rebel the screen dims, thats about it. It most definitely doesn't have a screen saver.
Will be ruined within 2 years 😀
I feel this is highlighted lately with Linus Tech Tips doing a feature on his TV getting burn-in.
Honestly the vivid setting is what makes the oled screen look so good! Same applies for oled tvs nice deep contrast with great black levels.
Overstauration kills small details.
@@Ortiz_661 It depends on the game. I prefer accuracy. But there are some games that look much better with a more vivid picture
@@JJaqn05 Agree man if you like playing horror games or dark games oled just makes the immersion so much better!
Darker games that were made to look dull, gritty, and spooky can now look cartoonish and lose its atmospheric effect?
Sounds good to me. 😂
It would be awesome if someone created a Qled/Oled hybrid. It would give you the best natural color and brightness (Qled) and the best darks (Oled). Unfortunately, it would be expensive.
They did Samsung Just came out with the tech
I was surprised one of my local gamestops had 12 OLEDs still at 4pm. Good luck everyone!
They’re. Sold. Out. Everywhere.
@@TheAmazingRaptor yea unfortunately
@@TheAmazingRaptor Oh well. I'll just wait a bit then...
@@mcnalga still sold out within a 50 mile radius :(
@@TheAmazingRaptor check with them in-store. In my local stores the new OLED systems were not listed online, so it showed none available when I checked online before stopping by the store.
What kind of sick person has vivid colour schemes on? First thing to turn off on any new device, OLED or not. It's disgusting
Its even worse on phones, how are you supposed to know if you are taking a decent photo if the contrast is all messed up.
My suggestion:
When playing in dim to dark areas, use your preferred “manually set” brightness settings with Vivid turned on, to take full advantage of the OLED.
I get my switch oled on the 18 is it worth it ? I have red Mario edition right now
@@B3you_ If you had a launch Switch like me, it might’ve been worth it, but it is a very big price to play the exact same games, so I would say no.
I've just bought an OLED Switch today. Beautiful machine it is! :)
It does, it makes the screen look grainy, but hey keep it on an enjoy lol 😂
Omg I discovered that on my switch OLED too. i thought it's deffect... but this grainy stuff just appears in gray areas
@@Knox420 I do, but it's an older one
Standard is always better. It does not matter if it is a cellphone, a tv or a console. It is the more calibrated option.
It’s blinding with auto brightness off, I actually prefer auto brightness turned on 😁
Standard is more accurate, vivid is grossly oversaturated.
It really helps, I found the same problems when first opening my new OLED
THANK YOU! Couldn't figure out why my launch day switch was brighter than the OLED, so much better now with auto brightness off
Never have liked vivid. Really wish I could choose warm 2 or 3
I actually love the vivid option, Tha colors really pop that way.
Same here! 😄
agreed, but they could have done that vivid option with a regular switch. it's not exclusive to OLED
Vivid is like the equivalent of bumping up your color setting on an LG OLED wayyyy past 50, close to 100. Vincent would be upset.
I have a Vizio tv, I have my color setting at about 70-75, depending on the console. The switch vivid mode comes close to it but not quite as colorful. So 100 on the tv will look ridiculously over saturated
I've been loving mine, beautiful display
Dude hopefully this works for me, just bought a switch 12 days ago and I absolutely love it. Although i love it i just can’t seem to be right about the screen being that dimmed.
Is there something wrong with the white theme? I've heard multiple people complain about it recently.
Has anyone noticed a grainy-ness if you looked at the gray background on the home menu?
For me it’s in game and the home menu ….
Vivid mode has never looked good on any display EVER. Can’t believe Nintendo set it as the default setting.
100x this! Also THANK YOU... for calling it "Nintendo Switch Oh-El-Eh-De" and not say it as "ohhh-led".
Since without the "O" it is still pronounced "el-eh-de" and NOT "led"!!!
Oh-led is easier to say
THANK YOU! I hated how overly saturated the colors looked 😭 I get headaches from look at it
Hmmm i honestly didn't notice any of this being a direct time switch user but the fact you mention images being possibly burned into the screen makes me wish I got a regular switch.
I love the vivid colors honestly. Splatoon 2 and animal crossing looks amazing on the system 🤩
The Oled model is technically not as bright as the old model, it has a lower amount of Nits 🤷🏻♂️
Not this Nit shite again , It is brighter than my srandered switch , my problem is YELLOW SCREEN
That was according to later models, its actually comparable to the launch model only with much better contrast which makes it appear brighter to the eyes. Personally, I've never had an issue with the screen on the launch model, its night/day better than some of the garbage Nintendo used on their older consoles.
Vivid all the way. Give me them colors!
You just got caught up in the hype.
What do your prefer vivid or standard?
I love how every one complains about burn in and acts like these companies haven’t figured out how to make an oled screen yet
I wish I had a Oled but I'm blessed to have A V2 SWITCH and a switch lite
I think biggest issue is the green tint in grey when you turn brightness down. Even in the menue
I don't have that on mines
OLED has nothing to do with oversaturated colors my dude.
THANK YOU!!!! I was so close to selling my OLED. Now it’s playable
"Nintendo Switch OH ELL EEE DEE"
Who tf says it like that? Lmao
This ignores that higher brightness isn't actually better. Just creates a false comparison if anything past "the screen gets x amount brighter" is claimed by changing this.
Love to see Toree 2 representation in the thumbnail🙏
I had a feeling people would have this issue.
Why is no one talking about how the screen looks almost yellow until you tilt it and it turns perfect white??
Only me?..
Ive noticed it, only very slight on mine.
It could just be the laminating glue inside the screen, sometimes it takes 50-100 hours to fully go, crank the brightness to full and put a full white screen up for a few minutes each day.
It should start to look correct when viewing straight on. 👍
If its really yellow then you could go for a replacement.
No I have it too. I’m actually consider to returning it and get a new one
@@thekiddie73 Thanks a bunch!!
I don’t see it ?
So, putting the settings to match those of the Normal Switch makes them look the same?.......................wow
Just a preference I guess, if you like the flatter colors, or if you like the vivid popping colors, like me. Would you rather them force the vivid mode on you and not let you choose to have standard color mode? If not for the better colors, the bigger screen and deep blacks are much better anyway
Nintendo switch OLED is awesome! I have some sample game videos on how it look when you play it on OLED Switch 😍😍😍
Tue burn in thing is likely exagsrratted. Modern OLED screens are much improved compared to a few years ago.
Alright the reason why it's an oled and they made it for vivid looking image and alot I Mena alot of consumers like that including myself lol and I prefer a dimmer oled contrast image anyway of the week lol
This is the way I look at it games aren't real so no need for strict accuracy let's liven it up ans make it awesomely colorful haha
Literally the only person who says O-L-E-D every. single. TIME
Vivid settings on screens should be outlawed, great vid! 👍🏻
exactly, it blatantly lies about the screen technology being used and fools people into thinking that the "vivid colors" are due to the OLED technology, when in reality it's because they tinkered with the contrast and saturation values. it's so dishonest when i see some comparison videos between the switch and the OLED switch
Same here! You're not alone🙃🙂👾
Yes my Switch OLED looks very weird. It’s sitting in Walmart’s warehouse with now ETA for delivery….
Some games to support the completely dark areas... and other games give a grey and ugly effect idk
Why would we worry you won't use the dark theme.
100% the ‘vivid’ setting is too much for my eyes, specially since I usually play too close to my face.
What game you are playing: the beginning?
Nintendo really likes to troll us
DREAD IS AMAZING!
If you see woods channel you will realize that burn in is barely to not a problem at all
