years ago we were fishing with a guide and he looked at my terrible casting and said lose all that false casting we don't have flying fish in Montana

Hmm … none of us are perfect, I’m certainly not going to pay someone handsomely to tell me how crap I am (I already know). Hope you didn’t go overboard with the tip.

@@callumclark3358I don’t think it’s that deep. I personally wouldn’t hire a professional fisherman to fish with me just to get defensive when they give me a tip to not suck as hard at being a fisherman

It’s always the 8th out of 7 planned false casts that I throw a tailing loop and screw up my whole rig 😂

I'm fairly certain that I saw a fish rise just downstream of the log behind you ;))

Ben, this is the best short video on casting that I have seen in a long time. Yes Virginia, there are reasons to false cast and not false cast. Well done, Sir ! 🎣😇

Every false cast increases your odd of a major f×+k up

That’s what’s it’s for? I swear it’s an air dryer for my fly. 150 casts is a must

I fish saltwater, more than one false cast is too many. When I do freshwater fish, one to two false casts to get the proper distance, and land the fly. The longer the line is in the air🕐🕜🕝, the better chance to f it up.

when I false cast it normally for 2 reasons, getting line out and judging where my fly will land and hooking the trees behind me.

I thought that exact same thing as that lady. It was why I never wanted to pick up the style of fishing. Until I found out about nymphing, I tied a drop shot rig with a nymph on a spinning pole, switched to fly rod the same season.

Dear HUGE. Thank you for providing these entertaining, to the point, informational, and educational videos. I need your Help. I have a friend who fishes a lot, recently retired, and needs a good lesson on how to safely get a fish to the net and when to stop fishing due to high water temps. First off, he way over plays the fish which is exhausting them. When I talked to him about this, basically, he said " if you want to learn how to fight trout, you have to go to Alaska" refering to getting large trout to the net that has taken him to his backing a couple of times. When he catches trout, he keeps them on the rod for 10-15 minutes playing them. He told me the other day that he was fishing when the temps were over 68 degrees. Again, I reminded him that any water temps over 68 degrees are dangerous for trout. Just has he told me that, his friend in the background said " when he released the fish, it went floating down the river belly up". This makes me sick. Again, after I heard that, I mentioned that we all have to pull out of the rivers when fishing at 68 degrees. I have also offered him several articles on this subject, but he doesn't read them. I feel he won't listen to me, after several failed attempts. I know he watches your videos. It would be great to see a video on how to efficiently fight trout - rod techniques, how fish run, what makes them freak out and what comes them calm down etc. In addition, something about when mortality rates from overplaying fish, with water temps, and maybe not fishing when fish are spawning. I know this is a HUGE ask. But, you are a HUGE Fly fishers who respects these fisheries and fish. I am happy to help come up with material for research for you. Thank you.

Watching this video is this first time I realized that maybe I don't totally suck at fly fishing. I only false cast to 1. Get my line out. 2. Dry my dry fly. 3. Line up and aim the cast.
When I take people out who are new to this, I always emphasize that they don't need to cast so much. All it does is increase the chance of getting snagged or scaring fish. But inevitably they wave that rod like 10 times.

Hah, when I was 5 years old, that is what I thought fly fishing was, based on a single photo in a book vs seeing in live in person.

Good advice. I've found that most of the time I get a better cast without a false cast. But, as you said, sometimes it's necessary.

what about false casting a three fly bounce rig with 4 AB's and balloon?
I don't think I see enough of that on the water.
