Tbf that's not what the critics implored her to do. They generally criticised Prism as pallid pop, encouraging her to experiment more and engage with more mature themes. Witness was slated as being too experimental and self-indulgent. Conversely, Smile was dismissed as being too generic and pop-oriented. Personally, I found Witness and Smile to be her most cohesive and best produced albums.
She became a profitable punching bag for tabloid media: the cynicism surrounding her song "Chained to the Rhythm" sold so they kept pushing it. As she was the largest star in the world at this time the general public had little sympathy for her as "punching up" is deemed somewhat conscionable.
The success of 143 will depend not on its contents or merits but rather which narrative is most profitable for the industry: a 'has-been pop-star fails yet again' or a 'Queen reclaims her throne'.

It’s a flop for Katy and the 🍇ist. Pandering with no real message or evolution of her dated sound.
With all the money in the world she couldn’t compete with Kesha’s first independent release. “Joyride” has just overtaken women’s world on the charts without a marketing budget or a videoclip.
