  • Hybrids and electric cars are becoming increasingly popular and can truly save a lot of fuel. Plug-in hybrids put both of those together for an ideal type of vehicle with the benefits of each. Electric only driving is available but the gas engine can run when needed to keep going or give you more power. This 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers just that, the ability to drive efficiently and still be practical. In this video I tell you whether or not it would fit your lifestyle and give you a long test drive explaining how a plug in hybrid works and what it's like to drive it.

    As a '19 model Euro spec owner (13.8kWh and 2.4l engine 135 hp) here are my top issues to add to this review:
    1 - BMU issue - all have this issue (mine starting losing capacity after just 7 charges)
    2 - Dealer / service support (after you buy it, no one knows how to work on this model - I have open tickets even in Japan with little or no success)
    3 - very bad app that works only on WI-FI and can disable your alarm (MMC are at their 4th attempt and still 1 star in Play Store)
    4 - engine works in Atkinson circle only below 2500rpm, so above 75mpg, I had fuel economy as low as 15mpg
    5 - 11 gallon fuel tank
    6 - Quick Changing stations only works at 1/3 (15 kWh) of they installed capacity (50 kWh) because of the small battery, this is the reason why it takes 20 minutes to charge with 15 miles
    7 - Quick Charging to 80% battery capacity is actually 70% State of Charge of battery (Mitsubishi software)
    8 - The battery can not be discharged below 30% (around 11 Amps)
    9 - Charge current can not be set
    10 - Max battery Amps that can be used when you quick change the car is 24 from a 46 battery
    11 - Battery does not charge fully on below freezing days
    12 - Real winter EV range as low as 11 miles (Normal driving, heater ON), summer 22-24 no A/C or 15-16 with A/C on
    13 - Very bad paint (already chips on hood and rust on hinges and beneath the car)
    14 - NO where to put the phone
    15 - Infotainment system freezes almost every drive
    16 - Slope boot (everything comes rolling over you when you open it)
    17 - Drives like a boat (especially above 55mph)
    18 - Beeps all the time
    19 - Very expensive parts (Auxiliary normal 12v battery - dealer 1100 dollar no labor)
    20 - Ride is hard on bumpy roads
    21 - NO automatically closings the windows when you lock the car
    22 - Battery is air cooled no liquid cooled
    23 - Electric tailgate is very slow
    24 - Not all the interior buttons and switches are illuminated (lock / unlock, mirrors, lighter, etc)
    25 - NO automatically unlock if you pull on the handle, you have to press the button
    26 - SAWD is a joke, I got stuck in 4 inches of sand
    27 - NO State of charge in percentage
    28 - Initial EV range available on display is just a guss
    29 - NO way to secure the chargin cable
    30 - Battery can not be charged to a specific value (like 90%) only for a specific time (like 2 hours)

      The only way this car is in the least way efficient/economical is if you plug in every night or whenever at home. Car was sold to me with the incorrect advice of ability to use an extension cord forgetting to mention warranty would void if any issues arise using an extension. Not being able to plug in the car renders it a VERY inefficient hybrid. I'm in battle at the moment with the dealership over this misrepresentation.

    • @dangr3957
      @dangr3957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yolanda Williamson you can use extensions just make sure its 13amp.
      I personally charge it at my local services.
      Its funny how the dashboard says 1 mile left however the fast charging unit says 25-30%. This is a secret juice left in the battery. Its only available if you run out of petrol. The car automatically switches back to full electric on low speed or at red lights even if you have no miles left. The fast charger charge it up to 80% in 25 min, also couple of miles on a motorway charges it pretty quickly. Many people compare this car to a normal hybrid m, however this car is a lot better and cooler as you can drive it purely on electric.

    I love the idea of a plug-in hybrid. I drive from Texas to South Dakota a couple of times per year and an Electric Car just wouldn’t work for me to do that. A plug in hybrid allows you to do mostly electric driving in town, but still affords you the ability to travel long distances using the hybrid system like normal. This Outlander just doesn’t have very good total driving range, but it could work for a lot of people!
    *Thanks for watching and have a great day! 😁*

    Funny to see the differences between different regions and how the car is equipped.
    We got a 2020 mid-spec Outlander PHEV, live in Denmark.
    Biggest change is that we have the 2,4 litre petrol engine, whics is SO much Better than the old 2,0 litre.
    Also some buttons and other things are different.
    Car Prices here are quite high, we paid 56K USD for a mid-spec. The RAV4 hybrid mid spec is 80K USD and still isnt a Plug-In, just a regular hybrid. We are very happy with the Outlander 😁

      Benny Gade What is your impression with the car so far? I’m also in Denmark and considering the Outlander. It would be great to get some first hand info from an existing owner. Any surprises or complaints?
      At present there really isn’t anything that comes close to it in terms of price and size/specs. However the brand new Ford Kuga PHEV is about to go on sale, so that has made me a bit reluctant about the Outlander. I feel the Outlander looks better, though. Kuga is pretty bland looking.

    I suppose this would make sense for someone who wanted a no frills EV, but only as a lease...the resale value on this would be dismal at best. The only reason to buy a Mitsubishi now a days is because it’s the only thing they can get you in. Lol. Kudos to Mitsubishi for building this, but it really needs a redesign bad. Mitsubishi could be a neat little niche automaker if they’d get it together. Maybe a cheaper alternative to a Mazda for instance. Anyhow, you did a great job on this review. Very informative and detailed. 👏

    Ive just tested a 2015 phev with 10,000km on the clock It is a failure as a 4wd as it wont pull out of the soft sand on the beach where as the 2.4 petrol only model petrol will.. it is a fast powerful car... the 2.4 engine and the electric motors add up to 200kw of power.. it dosnt feel anything like that but still much faster than the 2.4 petrol only model, maybe its weight.. Try pulling a caravan up a steep hill doing a hill start.. wont do it.. or towing it off a muddy soft paddock where all the wheels have sunk a little, it will rev up a bit but it appears too high geared to get going.. it is a great machine for other purposes though.

      @futbol1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PrimeAutotainment when u said the new outlander its pretty nice you are referung to the 2020 or 2021?
      To be honest the phev its a plus on the outlander but the only reason I started looking at outlander its because people talk good about it and pretty much the price compare to lexus or venza. I can probably get a 2021 or a 2022 outlander for the same price as a 2018 rx 350. Lexus are pretty nice and supper reliable so its the venza very nice interior too. It looks like I can get more car for price with outlander?? However I have seen lots of complaints about how outdated the inside of the outlande is😥
      Iam also afraid of reliability issues. Although I have read that Mitsubishi has a 10 year warranty🙄... is it bumper to bumper?

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will still use the regenerative brakes without using the paddles, but you can control it with the paddles to brake more. I should have explained that more, my bad! I’d you don’t ever use the paddles it will still recharge automatically for you 👍

    • @davidferrand878
      @davidferrand878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PrimeAutotainment ...OK, so that makes a hell of a lot more sense!!! In that case, it seems like it could be a pretty cool feature! Still, don't most hybrids still use the regenerative feature primarily even when stepping on the brake pedal? On my first hybrid even (2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid), you could see the charge indicator shoot up when you braked, and I recall that if you slowed down real slowly, you could definitely feel exactly when the actual brake pads activated...it was only in the last few MPH of slowdown. (I had that vehicle for almost 8 years and never had to change the brake pads!)
      I would perhaps liken it to using the tranny to slow down by downshifting (but with the positive result of recovering the energy!) I used to make a game of this when I was driving a stick back in the day...how little can I actually use my brakes while driving around town?! That practice came right back into good use more recently when I desperately needed my brake pads changed and used the manual mode on my transmission to minimize the grinding!!!

    The Outlander especially in phev form has always been a mediocre car lagging way behind and should be totally avoided as not up-to-date being way back from class leaders. Mitsubishi verging on bankruptcy, pulling out of Europe to try and survive only selling off cars already here in 2021. They struggled in 2020 to sell only 4,700 cars every 6 months in the U.K. as range of cars are so bad. Now relying on Nissan to develop newer version cars for Asia and Americas for the immediate task of surviving for a doubtful future.
