people often criticize this film for its violence... but in my opinion, it addresses the facts of life and death, friendship and struggle very responsibly.... I wish there were more films like this to teach children the reality of life and death...
After watching some sites with Lynx and Bobcat chasing rabbits and hares I've come to see something amazing in these creatures, particularly their knack for survival. Many times you see these big cats get close to these rabbits but that doesn't alway mean they're done for, just as often they get away.
Got a chance to watch this movie for the first time in about 18 years last night and it was wild to watch as an adult after seeing it so many times as a kid.
yeah i saw the movie again yesterday and it brought back all the memories! It is a lovely picture. Unusual in construction and beautifully illustrated and narrated.
i love that clip! takes me right back. actually i think as a kid i never really "got" this film, but i remember it so vividly. watchin it as an adult is like a whole new experience.
I saw the movie yesterday and it seriously moved me. At the beginning part (this video) I thought it was thought out well, but when they repeated what he said at the end it all made sense.
Oh, and must say, when I was younger (and still now), that drawing of the Black Rabbit of Inle when it appears at about 2:13 I found to be absolutely terrifying!
@Johnlindsey289 I think I was about 8 or 9 when I saw it. It scared me, but compelled me at the same time. Amazing how we seemed to be be so much more advanced in entertainment back in the 80s! We have totally taken steps BACKWARDS today. It's stuff like this that made you think and imagine and expand your mind!
I like how they present the relationship between god and it's creation that is present in most religious lore. God creates the world, and the world thanks God by disobeying their deity. In justice, God punishes the world, but leaves a light of hope so that all may survive or redeem themselves. I know I'm stating the obviouse, but since when is that present in a family film?
I've read the book 7 times, and watched the movie.. dunno, a thousand times, know it by heart xD my absolute all time favorite movie 4 ever. No movie or book can ever compare to it
you are quite right the author told these stories first to his children. and then wrote them and they became bestsellers and the movies were made. There is no political, religious, or other agenda in these films, (watership down and the plague dogs), although they are so empathetic and realistically written and do so familiar to us that we can see ourselves in them. I always felt I was like fiver. The unlikely one who could smell danger everywhere. It's a good book/film.
i love this film and this is the best bit and this films not that bad i watchin it when i saw a child i loved it! but the strange language still does throw me a bit
Out of all the scenes of violence and characters in this film... It was only the Black Rabbit of Death that scared me as a kid. I always had nightmares about it...
saw this movie when i was 8 or so and was absolutely terrified...../seriously depressed. now that i've read the book hrair times would sorta like to give it another go.....
Actually no. Watership down, was based off of the book of the same name. The author had spent a great deal of time learning of the biology of rabbits and their society, which turned out to be quite brutal. Essentially, watership down is human society portraited through, and through the eyes of rabbits- which bare resemblance to our own behaviors. As if you break it down to the essentials it comes down to survival, territory, resources, and breeding.
Personally I don't think you could improve upon this movie. Modern films don't have shit on films like this. They just don't make them like this anymore. I agree though, the book has so much more in it which should have gone into the film. However such is the way with book to film conversions.
this film is from 1978, while ghibli only started in 1985. if anything, ghibli uses elements from this fantastic movie (I love ghibli, don't get me wrong, but this film is an original).
Of course it is. The rabbits eat all the grass, so the other animals resort to having to eat other animals, especially rabbits. Survival, the key to evolution.
this part appears to be studeo ghibli artwork... but how can this be if so much of the movie is in such a different style...perhaps they copied or even asked studio ghibli for their artwork?
This film has nothing to do with standardized religions, GOD, or moral values. Its just a fictional animated film. Nothing more, nothing less. Good movie for its time.
Boy, this intro really doesn't give you much of an idea what the rest of the movie will be like (full of graphic violence and lots of bunny rabbits dying horrible bloody deaths).
I don't think they could capture the same horrific strangeness with the current style of films. It is too literal and all priority is put on extreme realism. (Not that this is bad, but it wouldn't work out for a story like this. What medium would they use? Probably 3D animation. It just wouldn't fit.) Just read the book instead. It's much better than the movie anyway. (Except I do love this opening scene.)
One of the BEST animated movies ever made! Horrifying and beautiful all at once...
My heart has joined the thousand, for my friend stopped running today.

Stunning animation. Beautiful. I love this film. I just love the whole story. Book is amazing, too.

Bunny mythology. What a beautiful thing.
This is the most brilliant cartoon of all time.
yeah i saw the movie again yesterday and it brought back all the memories! It is a lovely picture. Unusual in construction and beautifully illustrated and narrated.
When you understand that the value of an animal is worth the value of a star
the concept of animals haveing their own mythology gives them a more human quailty and makes us change the way we look at them.
i love that clip! takes me right back. actually i think as a kid i never really "got" this film, but i remember it so vividly. watchin it as an adult is like a whole new experience.
I totally agree, i watched this movie growing up and it is a classic in my eyes.
This actually reminds me of a Native American legend about how the rabbit came to be and it's relationship with other animals.
I saw the movie yesterday and it seriously moved me. At the beginning part (this video) I thought it was thought out well, but when they repeated what he said at the end it all made sense.
I just love the creation story for this movie.
This movie started out cute. But the shit got real, very quickly
one last thing the music when the rabbits are being hunted is epic!
Love their vocab! Lendri, elil and hrududu!!!
GO Watership down!
This animation was the best out of the whole movie!
Oh, and must say, when I was younger (and still now), that drawing of the Black Rabbit of Inle when it appears at about 2:13 I found to be absolutely terrifying!
Needs to be remade by the technology of james camerons avatar.
Kind of reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve and how thier sins were passed down to thier children.
Good film though.
Yup. They did nothing wrong and yet they were ment to suffer
nothing wrong? bruh, they ate the damn fruit, the one simple thing god asked them not to do 💀
This movie is so fucking epic.

From now on, we all worship Frith!

Why on earth would it need to be remade. Ever.

Best book/movie ever!!!
This is animation not in a nutshell
i love this film and this is the best bit and this films not that bad i watchin it when i saw a child i loved it! but the strange language still does throw me a bit
El-ahrairah. In Adams's Lapine language, the name is a contraction of the phrase Elil-Hrair-Rah, meaning prince with a thousand enemies.
Me too! It still creeps me a bit!
My fav part from the movie :D
its... its beautiful.
This is a classic, akin to Animal Farm, and 1984. This is a study in civil liberties and social structures.
Out of all the scenes of violence and characters in this film... It was only the Black Rabbit of Death that scared me as a kid. I always had nightmares about it...
at 2:45 it shows Frith having 7 eyes... sounds familiar
saw this movie when i was 8 or so and was absolutely terrified...../seriously depressed. now that i've read the book hrair times would sorta like to give it another go.....

I've only read the book. I've wanted to get my hands on a copy of the film for a while.
This movie made me proud to be born in the year of the rabbit. XD
I think it is used as an alert signal.
this film is from 1978, while ghibli only started in 1985. if anything, ghibli uses elements from this fantastic movie (I love ghibli, don't get me wrong, but this film is an original).
This really scared me as a kid O_o
With the music and everything /Shivers
What is said at 3:32 ? "Prince with a swift ???" I can't quite make it out.
Of course it is.
The rabbits eat all the grass, so the other animals resort to having to eat other animals, especially rabbits. Survival, the key to evolution.
The movie was decent, though the book was better.
All hail Frith-rah!
i remember this it messed me up!
If you check out the rest of my videos you'll find a video put to music by marilyn manson which shows a lot of the fight scenes etc...take a look =]
Yes.
I watched this movie when i was a kid. This is not a kids movie
regardless this is a great movie, loved the story!
this part appears to be studeo ghibli artwork... but how can this be if so much of the movie is in such a different style...perhaps they copied or even asked studio ghibli for their artwork?

Boy, this intro really doesn't give you much of an idea what the rest of the movie will be like (full of graphic violence and lots of bunny rabbits dying horrible bloody deaths).
Dead bunnies. . . so many dead bunnies. . .
@ds3kah You sure it just isn't a fun read?
warning
@gabbstarrr
Anyone with two sides of a brain have imagination!
Sadly though, not all use both...
Some don't use the brain at all...XD
