@@costumeninja1914 I think it depends what you're looking for. Like the Capcom fighting games that utilize RAM carts have really fluid animations that look fantastic. A lot of the Taito F3 ports have some amazing special effects -- especially when it comes to sprite scaling. Burning Rangers makes the best use of lighting, but has a lot of other issues which hold it back. Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Saga are probably the best-looking all-around 3D games on the system.
I think I got this game for free when I bought my Sega Saturn in 1994. At that time it was like the most beautiful graphic and sound I ever saw and heard.
A game about creatures made from stones made me weep.

I’ve heard about this game but never played a lick of Saturn in my life. I gotta say, that opening montage sounds like the perfect opening to a 90s OVA that could only be sung by Hironobu Kageyama. IYKYK. The game itself looks fantastic and right up my alley too!
The Sega Saturn may not be the best at 3-D games but it darn well can do 2D games very well

@@hakeemxsonicgarner5165 Your statement doesn't even make sense. The Saturn was never designed to be a purely 2D based console, and even if it was Sega would never have changed the console's entire architecture just because of two 3D games.
Don't get me wrong the Saturn has several 3D games in its library that are obviously lacking when compared to the PS1 versions. But the same goes for the PS1. This has nothing to do with the Saturn's 3D capabilities. If the Saturn was in fact a ‘2D console’ (as you're claiming), then most likely all of the 3D games in its library wouldn't even be comparable to the PS1 versions.
The 32x was a mistake. Sega Saturn must have been a worldwide success.

I'm like a hundred years old. I bought the Saturn Bundle from a JCPenny Christmas Catalog in 1995. Astal is the most stunning looking game for the 32-64 bit era. From the mid to late 90's there was this over the top industry push on the polygons, so Astal got terrible reviews and poor sales. I show the game to some people and most of them would say it is shitty graphics and it's too slow. I guess they forgot to use the run button like total dah! lol!

Considering this is supposed to be a showcase through the game, I didn't realize the first time watching this that you could make the bird do anything... Plus that constant beeping during bosses.
Looking back, I probably should have used it, if only to silence the annoying alert. That said, I wanted to challenge myself to finish the game without using it.

I played this game when I was super young, I remember only ever getting to the level where you ride that thing in the swamp. What's with his meter tho I swear you could do more than just have the bird go berserk

One thing I never understood was what was that blue demon that Geist got rid of in the sky area? It wasn't Gerado since the face looked like that of a horse, and it had pink nails. Could this have been an unused boss due to time constraints?
Lev Polyakov The bosses are all parts of Jerado's body. The horse isn't an unused boss. He's there to reinforce the fact that Astal was unwittingly helping Jerado and Geist. In fact, there's a good chance that while Astal is running around beating these bosses, Geist is doing the same to some unseen bosses elsewhere.
Saturn Memories Good point. I wonder if the team that made this game still has the original paintings they used to make the amazing backgrounds for the game? Its just a shame that such a brilliant looking game is made and then the artwork is cast aside somewhere not to be seen.

My favorite game as a kid! Always thought Antowas was WAY too hard on Astal as well as arrogant. "My work here is done"- you didn't do anything!
Well, to be fair, Astal was kind of an abusive asshole to anyone that wasn't Leda or Antowas and pretty much destroyed the planet in his first attempt to save Leda. So I'd say he deserved *some* sort of punishment, but banishing him to the moon and leaving Leda unprotected probably wasn't the best choice on Antowas's part.

The backgrounds are nice, but the characters look out of place. I wish they kept them like the intro, with a simple cell shaded look and put more focus on animation.

James Callahan SSF v0.12 beta R3, though this is one of the few games the emulator has major issues with.
For quite a few years now, SSF has been able to execute Astal if you open SSF's Options, go to the [Program 3] tab, and enable 'SH2 Cache'.
Nate Lawrence I run all games in full compatibility mode, which enables SH2 cache. The game plays, but will encounter errors and crashes at certain points if you input too many commands at once. I could've played through this game quite a bit faster had I not needed to slow down at the crash points.

I really love your channel and appreciate the Astal playthrough as it's been in my family since about a month after I bought my Saturn in '96. It was the first game that my youngest brother bought all by himself.

Duvmasta it was still the early video games era- a lot of shit was phoned in and done with no effort, and while the Saturn had several amazing concepts and ideas I’m afraid the games themselves are all fairly unpolished

Yeah, i had it in my head when I played this that I would try to use the bird as little as possible. In retrospect, I should have just used it whenever to shut up the alert sound. Still, the devs shouldn't have made it a constant annoyance in the first place.
You should have played the japenese version,its so much better.
