A few challenges in ethanol blending:
1. Sugarcane is highly water intensive leading to water stress in agriculture
2. India already lacks storage capacity to handle ethanol needed for 10% mixing
3. 1/10th of area needs to be sown with sugarcane - slightly impacts food security
4. E10 petrol still has Nitrous oxide emissions

India is the largest surgarcane producer & it might be sufficient to meet both blending & edible needs. But definitely, price will be increased, which might benefit our farmers
But on ground level there is no increase in sugarcane price only the company gets the profit of it. I writing this as a farmer.
Also gradually the cultivation area diminishing due to non sufficient price for farmers. Its also a farmers grievance

For every one litre petrol 10 ml is replaced by ethanol. How much sugarcane is needed to manufacture this ethanol? If cost of exporting Sugar is less than what we pay for that 10 ml oil ... Then India will benefit. Let's say we are getting 2 dollars while exporting and to get the oil we spend 5 dollars... that way it will be better if we use the sugarcane to manufacture ethanol

govt says by adding ethanol to petrol the carbon emission is reduced but in the process of fermentation of sugarcane to ethonol enormous amount of co2 is released than the combustion of petrol because the entire sugar cane juice is not going to be converted into ethanol right and finally as you said this addition of ethanol is done only in a economic point of view i think.
So it boosts the sugarcane cultivation, there will be need for more water as sugarcane takes more water than any other crop and also we need more fertilizers and pesticides which we need to produce more, some of nitrogenous and potash fertilizers are imported from other countries and how come it will save money for government
