what a great plane ,I had the pleasure of flying one all over Europe 1944 and 1945.
48 fighter sq. 14 fighter group, 10 army air force. i just turned 97 and still think i could fly one. enjoyed the beautiful photography

I've never seen that many airworthy Lightnings together, except, of course, in old wartime film. I love them in the old army colors.
David Smith you've still only seen them on film, what's the difference?
No one under the age of 80 has probably ever seen that many together since the war.

my absolute fave WWII airplane...man..they were so frikn badass!!..such a beautiful bird..whats interesting is the guy who created the P-38 Lightning..Kelly Johnson..also designed the SR-71 Blackbird...man that guy definitely earned his money and then some...just awesome times a thousand...))

There are currently 7 flyable P-38's in the world. 6 in North America and 1 in Europe. Our presentation of 5 flying P-38's at the Planes of Fame Air Show 2013 was the largest gathering of flying P-38's at an airshow since WWII. The Planes of Fame Air Show 2013 DVD will feature onboard video footage from several of these aircraft, plus a special air-to-air version of all 5 flying in formation. The Planes of Fame Air Show 2013 DVD will be available online and in our giftshop in the near future.

In my opinion one of the most gorgeous planes of the era, right next to the F6F Hellcat and P-51
Actually, this isn't the 1st time that 5 P-38s flew together in recent history. In June 2010, there was a gathering of 5 P-38s that flew together at the Mather Field air show near Sacramento, CA. It was great watching those old war birds fly.
If memory serves, I believe Glacier Gal is the P-38 they recovered under the ice.

I've seen P-38s in flight before. What an amazing airplane! As I understand it, it pretty much swept the Pacific skies of Japanese Zeroes, gaining air superiority and ensuring ultimate victory.
Awesome. Just awesome. The P38 was the pinnacle of romance of the piston-powered airplane.

In the late 50s...every Saturday morning 20 P38s would fly like clockwork in 4 formations of 5 ..fly from I think Mitchell Field LI to Massachusetts over Dutchess County New York. A great sight. Years later..30 years at least ...my friend told me his father was in that formation as a reservist doing the Saturday trip.
What a video. The father of a boyhood friend flew P-38s in Alaska during WW II and was still in love with it.. He modeled it and several other variants.
50,000 hours of flying means 5.7 years in flight for one man. Amazing.

What a thrill to see this! I'm in the process of writing the history of my Uncle, Bob Faurot, who was a P-38 Pilot from the 39th Squadron, 5th Air Force. He was killed in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea just a few months before I was born. The history is to be featured at the Heritage Flight Museum, Bellingham, WA. This is the first time I've seen a P-38 in the air. Thank you!

Great footage of a fantastic aircraft .P38s were stationed 6 miles from my home in rural Northamptonshire, England during the war, just up the road from Molesworth and the B17,s of the Hells Angels.God bless them all for their sacrifice.Keep the "little friends" flying.

After WW2 they were selling these planes for $1500 and even threw in a tank of gas to any American buyer. Pity my Grandmother didn't buy a few and stick them in a barn for me!
Deaf Smith I forget what plan it is now I know its one of the flying ones my dad would play in in phx in the 50s.most where demolished but one went on to be restored and my dad always told me the p40 only cost 400!!!!

So freaking cool, it’s crazy to see the pictures of 100’s of them piled high for scraping,many almost new ,just tossed on top of the others ..shame no one thought about the future of aviation history after the war !!! We could have had another 100 or even a 1000 of each fighter still flying today allowing so many more pilots to enjoy them,while also making it cheaper to do so,& allowing our kids to learn the history of freedom first hand still !
I won't bore you with thanking you for your service, sir. You did your duty, as all we veterans did, and for most of us that's enough. I envy your experience, though. The P-38 is a beautiful airplane. FWIW, I watched Chuck Yeager and a friend, both about 75, fly P-51s at the EAA Convention at Oshkosh, WI. They raced around the pattern, pulling lots of gees. I have no doubt you could fly a P-38.

growing up in the Detroit suburbs, I was luck enough to see this beautiful bird.. the sound was distinctive .. this would have been in the late 50s or early 60s. I would love to see them fly again. So sad there are only 7 left.........

Magnificent. Thanx for posting this, and for the great vid work; U did some of the best cam work I've seen like this. Such a rare event; I do so miss going to these airshows with my cameras. What an event, 5 at once. Im also greatful the announcer let us hear the Allisons as they flew by. What an event. I sure dnloaded this one.
I think the original pilot of Glacier Girl, who landed her in Greenland due to that ice storm, would be amazed at what kind of celebrity that plane is today!
There's 'a P-38F just out of restoration that is the only P-38 that has combat hours on it. They pulled it out of a swamp in New Guinea. It's a pretty bird!

Considering that it is a P-38F, recovered from New Guinea, and on of the pilots who flew it here has confirmed it, I'm pretty sure it's a real combat aircraft.

Love airshows and have been going my entire life. Never seen my favorite plane flying once though, the P 38. Would have loved to have seen five at once!
Looks like the F35 demo team should be doing the air show circuit so hoping they have an original Lightning for the Heritage flight.

The nickname was angel in overalls. It wasn’t the best at anything. But it did its best everywhere. A lot of aces in this airframe. It’s downfall was it was twice as expensive as other airframes. Imagine a p38 with super props?
PLEASE don't overlook "GlacierGirl",I believe she is still down @ the Middlesborro Ky Airport where she was restored&put back together.Don't know if she is airworthy,does anyone have that information?

I did not know that there were four more P-38s than Glacier Girl. I flew in an F-5 in 1955 in Bishop, CA that was used for cloud seeding. When Lefty Gardner sold his P-38 to Red Bull, it was taken to Europe. I wish some of these would come to the Reno Air Races....
It would have been a real winner in Europe in WWII if not for the diving problem that ultimately was solved by a spoiler on the back of the wing. But it shone in the Pacific....

Not to cast aspersions on the Merlins but for me the Allison sounds better. They're both v12s, would think they would sound similar
No flight would want to fly head to head with the lightnings. The bf109s would any them. They’d jump jugs ( the figs would hold their own). The mustangs were so late to the dance
I know where there are at least 23 p-38's buried under ground by the Us Army Air corps. The problem is some Volcano covered up the bury sights with at least 18 feet of magma.over them. Clark air base is the location bury sights One and two on the map. You might find a bonus aircraft crashed landed by a lightning Ace.
the Clark Field aircraft (weren't P-38) were dug up and scrapped in the 1960s during a clean up of unexploded ordinance and removal of military equipment. the second area of buried aircraft (also not P-38) were dug up in the 90s when a powerplant was built. you may be referring to the Burma Spitfires, of which 140 aircraft were found buried, but not by a volcano. if a burial of P-38 exists, highly doubt you're going to find one of Richard Bong's, Thomas McGuire's, or Charles MacDonald's spare aircraft.
The Army Air Corps won the toss from the Navy to bring down IJN Adm. Yamamoto sense we had already broken the Japanese Code and knew where he was supposed to be. The Zero was no match to the Pursuit Lighting and easly took the Admiral to the great Shinto Shrine
I believe we're seeing just about HALF of the total number of airworthy Lightning's in one place. Glacier Girl is there. Anyone know what the total restoration cost on her was? It wouldn't have been spent if these aircraft weren't ultra-rare. BTW, wasn't the original nose art for Glacier Girl a scantily-clad woman sitting on a block of ice? Well, if it wasn't, it SHOULD have been.
After the war many airbases buried a lot of equipment, parts and maybe even aircraft. I know that was the case here in the UK. I heard first hand from one old boy who helped build the local airfield that a lot of stuff was just dumped into pits because the cost of getting it back to the states would be to high. I'm certain there's tonnes of goodies just waiting to be discovered on old airfields here in the UK and in other parts of the world...

What was the better of the two aircraft, p-38 or p-51? Actual facts. I wonder why the p-38 disappeared so quickly and why the p-51 stayed.
Range, airspeed, and armament, the P-51 was better. P-38 was widely used, but was primarily in the Pacific Theater while the P-51 served in pretty much every theater. the P-51 was also cheaper to produce. as an escort, the P-51 could tangle with ME-109 and FW-190 better than the P-38 could.

Actually, the P-38 maintained the greatest combat radius of any U.S fighter. At no time did a current production P-51 ever have a greater combat radius than a current production P-38.
As far as armament, the P-38 was a better gun platform, it did not deal with convergence, the four Browning M2 50 caliber machine guns, and the 20MM cannon all fired in a 30" circle from point blank to maximum effective range, making it far easier to get the full weight of fire concentrated on target. And the 20MM was equally adept at shattering wing spars, and exploding fuel tanks.
Olds, Ilfrey, Morris, Blumer, and Lowell all did well in the P-38, just to name a few.
The 9th and 15th AF had considerable success with the P-38 against the Luftwaffe, as did several individual pilots in the 8th AF, it was the 8th AF command that caused its own issues with the P-38. The P-38 was also successful in North Africa against the Luftwaffe.
In the Pacific, the P-38 accounted for more Japanese aircraft than all other aircraft in the Air Corps combined. The Navy aircraft outscored the P-38 simply because more Japanese targets were available to them.
The P-38 was not without issues, it required a better pilot, and a better ground crew that worked harder, it required more fuel and more maintenance. But twin engines made it very survivable and more likely to bring the pilot home.
