  • For this #ThrowbackThursday the Edwards historians offer up a WWII era P-38 Lightning spin recovery training video that was filmed at Burbank and, what was then the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range. Here's the original 8:24 minute "talkie".
    By the way, ever wonder what it was like to learn to fly a P-38? Imagine yourself in a classroom in the middle of a wind-swept desert, preparing for a combat assignment. Although present-day Edwards AFB has an iconic flight test history, many P-38 pilots trained here during World War II. It was serious business, and many perished in training accidents at Muroc. Training videos like these were crucial to help young aviators hone their skills before they deployed into combat overseas.

    Thank you so much for posting this. I'm not a pilot, just a P-38 buff and it is always fascinating to learn more about what it could do.
