    My dad was a P38 pilot, based in Italy & flew missions over Eastern Europe. Shot down over Romania on 16th mission, POW for 4 months. 2 Purple Hearts, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. It has been a dream of mine for years to actually see one in the air, get to hear those engines in real life, not just in a video. Finally realized that dream this summer at Oshkosh. Seeing that plane fly & then getting to actually put my hands on it, put Dad’s picture & his medals in front of it to take pictures with my son & grandson, emotional beyond words. Am forever grateful.

      Very cool. By far my favorite WWII aircraft. The idea of “ Let’s give one pilot the power of 2 counter rotating, Turbocharged, V12 Allison engines.” Just appeals to me! I always thought the ME262 was an impressive plane as well.

      @timmyhers9253 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. Also to note that the reason the P-38 is unusually quiet compared to most ww2 fighters if that because of its Turbosuperchargers which are located on top of the booms. These turbosuperchargers dampens the noise created by the engines. These turbosuperchargers also gave the P-38 good performance at high altitude.

I know it is outside, but when you stand in line for an airshow sausage, pepper and onion along with standing on the flight line down wind, even though I am vaccinated and wear a mask, I still have health issues. And even healthy vaccinated people are catching it. So thank you for posting as it will tide me over as it has for the past year and a half now. Take care and God Bless from Florida.

    This was Kelly Johnson's creation. It was the first known aircraft, to have to deal with compressability, and a very very very famous aviator, went to the Pacific Theater, prevailed over ground crew mechanics, tweaked the in flight fueling, which enabled the Lightning to extend its range, and like clockwork, intercept a very famous Japanese military leader.
    The rest...is history.

      Lindbergh leaned out the fuel/air mixture, and at the ground crew meeting concerning the subject, veteran mechanics birthe'd bovine's, fearing burnt pistons.
      Lindbergh volunteered to log some flight hours ( he wanted desperately to get some war time hours and a kill, but was grounded by Pres. Roosevelt and flag officers in the military, as a national icon and hero ).
      When the P-38's engines were torn down and inspected, they were the reverse of what was expected, cleaner, valves, pistons and cylinders.
      The way this came about, was EVEN MORE INTERESTING!
      Getting formations up, off the ground and formed up for a mission, took time, and every moment an air born plane and pilot had to wait for the last of the group, was fuel they WOULDN'T have for the flight over Pacific waters, to return to base.
      It was none other than Lindburgh, that was on the runway, interfering with operations, that triggered an officer to storm into the tent of base operations and in coarse manner, demanded to know, basically " Who the #&*%=\& was sitting on the runway screwing things up?"
      Lindburgh was in that tent at that moment, and after apologizing, began to analyze the issue...long distances over water and critical fuel consuption.
      It seems, he had a bit of experience in dealing with those challenges, and he began to study the problem.
      He went directly to the source, the mechanics with his concept.
      Against much resistance and voiced doubting, Lindbergh carried the moment, and began logging some flight time on a leaner fuel mixture.
      After tearing down the engines, the proof was visible for all to see.
      I forget how many hours were run on those engines.

    • @ohwell2790
      @ohwell2790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He did not prevail over the ground crew mechanics. He taught the pilots about high manifold pressure and low RPM to get better range.Get it right for crying out loud. Also these engines rarely went 300 hrs in combat anyway. If it wasn't for mechanics working nearly and sometimes 24 hrs a day pilots would not have a plane to fly. That is from me, a master aircraft mechanic (43171E) crew chief on C-141A's and C-130E's 1964 to 1990 Vietnam Veteran.

Once the Brits figured out that by putting the Merlin in the Mustang and drastically improving it's performance gave the Allies a very capable long range fighter escort at almost A third of the cost of the p38.

    Could you imagine it with merlin engines

    • @AlanRoehrich9651
      @AlanRoehrich9651 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would ruin it. The Allison was a far better performer. Lighter, more HP, more fuel efficient. With turbochargers, the P-38 has no need for the Merlin.

    Sexiest sounding Allison’s.

    Was this one of the later models? Large intake on the "nose" of each engine resembles the P40. Twin Allisons with advanced superchargers must have added up to 1600 horsepower per side? Up to 2000 per side on the latest K model as the link says. (Greg's Airplanes)

    I wonder if anyone has tried twin Merlins by now?

    • @AlanRoehrich9651

      The final version had 1875HP engines, at 80" of boost, and 3200 RPM.
      The Merlin engine is a substantial downgrade from the Allison V-1710F in the P-38.
      The next upgrade would be the Allison V-1710G. That series made 2000+ HP and was even more durable and reliable, as well as more fuel efficient.
      The P-38 was handicapped by having the inefficient and unreliable Curtiss Electric propellors. It needed Hamilton Standard High Activity paddle props. The War Production Board refused to allow Lockheed to fit the better propellors, and refused to allow Allison to produce the improved engines in volume until too late.
