- Mobile MRI trailer HVAC unit making noises, I wasn't told another company worked on this over the weekend. In this video, I am talking out loud, explaining how I come about the next step of diagnosing what's going on. All HVAC units have the same basic 4 components. Some may have a few extras sensors, but this climate system was new to me and this is how I worked my way through it even though I had never worked on this particular model before.

Thanks Jay, at this company were constantly doing something different so it’s unfortunately just the way you have to do it. Giving up generally is not an option.
I live in central Florida and worked on something very similar. It was a mobile CAT/PET and MRI scan trailer. The AC was easy to work on because it was two 5 ton Bard wall hung package units. There was a chiller that was in a cradle attached to the underside of the trailer that cooled the MRI machine. That thing was a pain in the ass to work on. I also was doing the work not through the company I worked for and the doctor 10-99ed me. I learned a lot from that experience. Good times

Note to all techs….use a sharpie to mark an equipment panel as to what you found and what you did so there is a record with the equipment for the next technician. Hell, even put your company info so that you will be called again
Especially if it is a mobile unit which you may never see again

We’ve got a Daikin this reminds me of. The mechanical contractor and installer both pointing fingers at each other.

To say it was tight in there is an understatement. Looks like maybe you were the 2nd opinion because they didn’t fully trust the 1st guy.
After speaking with the owner I was told the original company was sending a second guy to recheck the system 😆. It sounds like the on-call guy was the last resort person

Great video brother, looks similar to the TV production trucks, the only problems with the TV trucks is the different controllers that’s used and not working on these units but every now and then

I loved this one. I get a lot of anxiety when working on stuff I haven't seen. But you are correct, it's all the same crap. Use the fundamentals and don't overcomplicate it.

Last time I had one compressor ground out northern air said shut the other compressor down being they’re piped commonly. Biggest Junk ever. We had them ship a whole new unit and bolted on the trailer.

Compressors are in parallel, one burns up = leave crud to kill second one. Designed to fail.
That's how most grocery racks operate and they run that way for 30+years. It comes down to proper maintenance and operation. These are likely ignored until it breaks.

kinda late to the party but do the compressors discharge lines (where they meet) have a check valve inbetween that 2-1 joint? something tells me when it shuts down or (if) only one compressor can run that would create some sort of venturi sucking action(possibly pulling oils) or high pressure back feeding issue, never worked on something that had that but any tips or information would be awesome! thanks
No check valves.
So how were you able to diag cc1 when a1 and a2 were not landed, is it possible that the high current draw of bad compressor locked up the cc1, I mean I heard the chatter, but coil was receiving no 24v the black and blue wires with yellow tape. Maybe I missed something … 13:16
My thought is the one compressor burned out then took out the other one causing a locked rotor possibly. I don't know at this point. All I know is both compressors need to be replaced, once they're replaced then the system needs to be checked for proper operation and superheat.
Found the right fuse on the disconnect blew. After investing found that when I checked ohms from the compressor to ground it would start at 16 M ohms climb to 38 and then OL. That test was done with the plug on the terminals disconnected and with plug on. I wonder if that means the compressor is failing I'm curious to know if anyone has come across this before.
It's possible you could have moisture in the system. I've had that happen with mega ohm meters. After I remove the compressor and the refrigerant was out of it it didn't do that anymore. Either way I'd show it as a sign that the insulation is starting to fail.

I’m pretty sure its a bad thing if you try to run only one compressor of the pair when in tandem like that. Probably what happend, one compressor died and they tried running it with only one and that one went to ground. I could be wrong though.

Cars or trucks HVAC is always cramped and hard to work on.
And when you work on some of the big trucks large brands that have a Monopoly and proprietary parts . It sucks because some of the distributors have piss, poor service and an attitude because they know they’re the only guys in town.
Kind of like working on it and trying to buy carrier parts. If you’re not an authorized sales or distributor.

got a strange one a Thermall open face display the tag says r448 the compressor says r404 the the display calls for cooling the relay clicks but the compressor will not start no condenser fan
Replaced all the start component's and still no start controller is new it's a 220 system any idea incoming volts are 207 thanks
You have 208v at the compressor but no operation? What's the amps? Sounds open but why isn't the fan running,? That sounds fishy
no fan? soundls like a power problem. Could be a bad contactor.

The other problem is there are no schematic's on the unit anywhere

Had to do a warranty replacement on a tandem scroll set on a York unit last year. Condenser unit was on the ground but there wasn't much room to slide the tray out so we had to get some half inch fiberglass rods to hoist and slip them out.
I'm not a fan of tandem compressors because if one grounds out it poisons the oil for both of them and have to be replaced as a set anyways.

same crap, packed in 1/10th the area, high off the ground and near impossible to work on. they need to bite the bullet and swap the whole refer unit out, or buy a new trailer...
