interested to know what you guys would recommend for an aerobic base-build? How far out from race season should it start and how many sessions per week? Cheers!

I'd love to know why you say to start off the offseason with the short energy system, instead of the long one. my thinking was that the long energy system (aerobic) would take time to build up, as starting it around March for May would be too short, and I wouldn't reach my max long endurance. I'm doing about 3-4 hours of anaerobic and 5-6 of aerobic training per week, does that seem right? How much should it vary throughout the offseason?

Strength is by far harder and take longer to build than aerobic capacity, therefore in the early stages of the offseason we build strength along with shorter duration capacity. They compliment each other and will encourage quick adaption when you combine them. If you were to start with endurance then try to add strength they conflict and you'll lose some of the benefits of the work you put in. The strength foundation we put in transitions well to speed and power then ultimately endurance, this doesn't work the other way around.
It's important to understand though, we never let any area drop off drastically.
      I hope this helps.

    No mention of Tabata? HIIT?

Tabata is a good tool yes, and as described in the video when we are talking about shorter sprints this falls into the HIIT category.

Fit4Racing - Thanks for your reply. I’ve recently learned of Tabata through battle ropes training. Apparently it was developed by a Japanese research scientist in a lab, and is all the rage among the hipster gyms / trainers lately. I’m new to your videos, but as a mountain biker this is some top notch stuff - especially in regards to the sport-specific training tips. Keep up the great work, looking forward to checking out more of your videos in the near future!
