- This was so cool! We went to China in the Summer and stayed in a big hotel. Downstairs in the reception lobby area there was a grand piano. It was always covered up, but one day there was a party or some kind of celebration - and the piano was open! I jumped on and the manager/reception started to come over to get me off - but when I quickly started playing something they let me keep playing. I think they were worried that someone would start bashing away.
So after playing a little bit of classical - I decided to pull out Queen in China! Bohemian Rhapsody and Don't Stop Me Now. The Bohemian Rhapsody movie came out in China in March and it was censored, which is sad, but also good that it was showed at all!
I had a lot of compliments (my mum had to translate!) because there are many young pianists in China, but many are classical and many don't show as much "passion" in their playing. Usually they also play in arranged concerts or school performances, and it is very unusual to have any children play in "public" randomly, so there was a lot of interest from the guests in the hotel.

It is not often you find a grand piano out in the public available for playing. We stayed in this hotel, and the piano was always covered up and locked (I checked!). I know the feeling, our daughter is 9, half Chinese, plays the piano since she's 4, three years ago she also started saxophone.
To be fair, it was an OK performance, but nothing really to shout about. I won't even say the emotion is well expressed.

honestly the detune sounds nice but either the acoustics or maybe the piano itself make it sound kind of thin.
Par for the course re hotel lobby pianos. (Keith Emerson intentionally detuned the piano he played on a few of his pieces.)

Great arrangements. I was lucky enough to see Queen live a few years ago, when they played in China. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I could watch/listen to you play all day. I swear, I miss it so much. Music is my passion. I recently had 3 brain surgeries and have not been able to play for a while because of the memory loss from the surgeries. (I literally had to relearn things like how to write my name or simple things again and I'm a writer/author!) I am slowly coming back to being able to play .. very slowly
Music never leaves you I think. Hope you recover fully

@@applez4life200 No. You are still imagining with the false information that have been fed to you. If you do visit China and actually talk to people, you would know it is not the case. For example, many universities have TH-cam access by default, which means they don't need VPN to visit, and it is publicly known. A wall is only to prevent uneducated people to get false information, while undergraduates are good enough to know CNN's BBC's fake news.
That was so cool, Cole! It was also an interesting social experiment. Neat that your mom encouraged you. Also neat that you knew to 'back off' down to gentle music. They didn't look quite as okay about it when you played "Don't Stop Me Now", which is expected, I gather. I'm learning a lot from your notes. Not usually done, a grand piano in the lobby with a child playing the piano. Usually classical. Not a lot of movement of the body when a person in China plays. You were movin' and groovin' and I thought "that's my activist pal Cole right there!" Bravo! It sounded fabulous, too. :-)
