    Ranking The Beatles studio albums is a tall order. The band consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (sometimes with Billy Preston and almost all produced by George Martin) is known world over and their LPs frequently top "Best of" lists. In order their UK releases are: Please Please Me (1963) With The Beatles (1963) A Hard Day's Night (1964) With The Beatles (1964) Help! (1965) Rubber Soul (1965) Revolver (1966) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) The Beatles "White Album" (1968) Abbey Road (1969) and Let it Be (1970). Their box-set also includes the 1967 US release of the EP Magical Mystery paired with singles like Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.

    The essential track in Rubber Soul, to me is "In my Life" and, it might be the most beautiful song they ever recorded.

    I was 17 years old when "I Saw Her Standing There" first hit the radio. That fact drastically colors my feelings about which albums are best, because these are the soundtrack of my youth. I rarely think about which album is best. I will say that for many many years I considered "Sgt. Pepper" the best but that was only because of "A Day in the Life". It was like a bombshell. You just cannot believe the impact it had on my friends and me. Somewhere along the line I noticed I listened to more of "Revolver" than any of the others, so I guess I rank it #1. You likely cannot believe how disappointed most of us were with the "White Album" at the time, particularly following Sgt. Pepper.

    • @jamesdrynan
      @jamesdrynan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey Alan! I was thirteen in 1964. Started playing guitar a month before the Sullivan show and became a professional musician because of them. The White Album, at the time, sounded to me like they each chose a different lane and weren't playing as a collective group. Still, some great tunes, individually or otherwise. The Beatles were my cultural road map through the sixties.

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When I was 17 I would’ve told you Sgt. Pepper was the greatest album of all time, but now with wisdom and perspective at 54 it ranks 3rd behind Revolver & Abbey Road. I can only imagine your disappointment at the White Album, but when I was 10, it and Sgt. Pepper were the only two Beatles albums we had in the house and I listened to them constantly. Well, maybe not side 4. Side 2 Was my favorite with all the songs with animal titles. The songs of our youth always hit just a little bit different in the feels than the rest, don’t they.

    • @kerryfoerster1767

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@kerryfoerster1767 there’s really no argument to that. I’m not the biggest fan of Honey Pie, but it’s sure as hell an authentic pastiche. And right now we could all use a dose of Paul McCartney’s relentless optimism. And Revolution 9, well you just have to have a taste for sound collages or Musicque Concrète. Which I do. I got it from listening to The White Album and Zappa’s Uncle Meat. It’s ranked 5th on my list. That’s a pretty amazing 5th best album right there. A testament to the fact that The Beatles are simply the greatest of the great.

      albums, each White one separately , have more that I don't care for. But as I added singles and other stuff

    I actually really like Magical Mystery Tour and Beatles for Sale. I think Beatles for Sale is my favorite of the earlier albums. I like the folk rock sound to a lot of the tracks, and the lyrics start to show more melancholic themes. I'll Follow The Sun is a track I especially like, but No Reply, Eight Days a Week, and Rock and Roll Music are also great. I'd say that's my favorite cover they've done. Every Little Thing is a good one too, but I greatly prefer the version by Yes.
    As for Magical Mystery Tour, I really like the original stuff on it. I love how psychedelic Blue Jay Way is, and Your Mother Should Know is a nice upbeat song. I Am The Walrus is also and in my top ten Beatles songs.

    How does Mr. Curtis not have more views on this video? He has a passion for music that really comes through in his videos and I truly believe he deserves a wider audience. So, get your parents and yes even your grandparents to give a listen. Believe it or not, a lot of them - like me - were young once too and remember chewing the shrink wrap off a new LP album. Who knows, you just might learn your elders aren't quite the old foggies you think they are. So please, share this and all of Mr. Curtis' videos with those around you. Another thing I know with all you have to do, this would be virtually impossible, is to do a sit-through on all the Beatles albums track by track. In doing that, you can break down what makes each track musically sound, what ruins it, and other such things. However, as busy as a man you are, I know that might not be possible. I only mention it because it seems to be a trend with other music people on TH-cam.

    Great channel! Here's a new perspective on the Beatles - the thing is that almost every album is missing a few tracks. Before their 1st album was released, they decided NOT to include any single releases on their albums. (Past Masters compiles all those omitted singles in one double LP. .Its quite an impressive bunch of songs). If you like the Beatles catalog as it is, just imagine adding all the singles back to the albums they were lifted from. Based on release dates of albums & singles (A & B sides), here's a pretty good guesstimate of how to put all those singles back where they came from...
    ALBUM..........................Singles To Add Back To That Album's Track List
    PLEASE PLEASE ME.....Love Me Do, From Me To You, Thank You Girl
    WITH THE BEATLES.....She Loves You, I'll Get You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, This Boy

    BEATLES FOR SALE....I Feel Fine, She's a Woman, Long Tall Sally, I Call Your Name
    HELP...I'm Down, Yes It Is
    [now it really gets interesting]
    RUBBER SOUL...Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out
    REVOLVER.....Paperback Writer, Rain
    SGT PEPPER.....Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane
    MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR.....Lady Madonna, Inner Light (orig. UK LP lacked Strawberry & Penny)
    THE BEATLES WHITE ALBUM*....Hey Jude, Revolution
    YELLOW SUBMARINE.....
    ABBEY RD....
    LET IT BE.....Don't Let Me Down, Ballad of John & Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, You Know My Name
    Makes for a pretty interesting, new way to consider stuff that's been around awhile. Kind of freshens it up, yeah ?
    * One final thought experiment: The revised White Album has 32 tracks including Hey Jude and Revolution. Now, pick about 16 tracks you would eliminate to end up with a one disc LP to your liking. (Its harder than it sounds.) Does your ranking change? Might this turn out to be the Beatles' best album? Sounds like a good video for your channel.
    Enjoy !

      yeah when I rank the Beatles's "albums" I'm actually ranking periods like early 63, late 63, early 64, late 64, early 65, late 65, 66, early 67, late 67, 68, 69. It's unfair to rank just the albums without considering the singles

    My two favourite albums are 'Help!' and 'Abbey Road'. I was fourteen when Help! was released and it blew my mind. It is hard to describe to later generations the impact of this album. I think people who were around at the time would put Help! much higher on the list. And of course, Abbey Road is just a masterpiece.

    When I was back there at seminary school there was man there who brought forth the proposition that you can rank the Beatles' albums. Rank the Beatles' albums. Rank the Beatles' albums.
    YOU CANNOT RANK THE BEATLES' ALBUMS!
    Thank you to Jim Morrison. RIP, brother.
    “Harmonic interest is typical of their quicker songs, and one gets the impression that they think simultaneously of harmony and melody (they did), so firmly are the major tonic sevenths and ninths built into their tunes, and the flat submediant key switches, so natural is the Aeolian cadence at the end of 'Not A Second Time' (the chord progression which ends Mahler's Song of the Earth).”
    "This is a quote from William Mann, the then music critic of The Times in London. The article, titled 'What Songs The Beatles Sang', was printed on December 23rd, 1963, just over a month after the release of the album 'With The Beatles' in Great Britain. This critical analysis was unlike any media exposure The Beatles were getting up to this time, most of which consisted of reports on the mass hysteria that accompanied their appearances."
    "What this article did was add an enormous amount of credibility to The Beatles music. It helped to squelch the complaints from parents that their teenagers were idolizing long-haired talentless noise-makers (well, they did that, too). John Lennon referred to the article in interviews many times over the years, emphasizing that this review was responsible for 'starting the whole intellectual bit about The Beatles.' ”
    "The term 'Aeolian cadence' became an often mentioned term in the tabloid press at the time, which sounded very impressive with respect to The Beatles’ music, but was viewed as humorous by the band. 'I can’t help having a quiet giggle when straight-faced critics start feeding all sorts of hidden meanings into the stuff we write,' Lennon remarked in 1965. 'William Mann wrote the intellectual article about The Beatles. He used a whole lot of musical terminology and he’s a twit.' "
    (quoted from "Beatle Music History")
    BTW, if you care, the meaning of the term "Aeolian cadence" is when a song in a major key resolves on the VI minor chord, which is the tonic (I) chord of the relative minor key. Here the song is in "G" and ends on an "Em."
    Don't' worry about it, the Beatles never did.
    However, the chords of "Not a Second Time" are unique in pop music, and even more so in rock. Was Lennon a genius? No need to ask a second time.

    All their albums would have been classics if they had just added the singles. Imagine Hey Jude on The White Album replacing Revolution #9 or I Feel Fine, She’s A Woman replacing those clunkers on Beatles For Sale. And you like you said Meet The Beatles tops With The Beatles because of the hits being included. Imagine Rain & Paperback Writer on Revolver or We Can Work It Out & Day Tripper on Rubber Soul. If you just evaluate the albums one can get the impression that they fell short a few times but you have to remember all those hits in between.

    • @dennydowling2169
      @dennydowling2169 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Beatles didn't want the singles on the albums because they didn't want their fans, who were mostly kids at the beginning of their career, to have to pay twice for the same song. The Beatles didn't consider the cover songs to be clunkers. They were songs they played in the clubs in the early days which they really liked. For "Beatles for Sale" there was the problem of time constraint. They were simply overwhelmed by their commitments and didn't have the time to breathe long enough to write enough songs for a new album. I think they had a contractual obligation to put an album out, so they fulfilled it.

    I agree with your comment on Spector's sacrilegious handling of the Beatles' songs. His dated wall-of-sound technique was like covering diamonds with goop. As for a favorite album, I'd pick Revolver because of the variety of songs and production. I was sixteen when I bought this album and hearing Eleanor Rigby after Taxman blew my mind. How could a group have this many different feels on one record! Finishing with Tomorrow Never Knows? Absolutely ridiculous! And " Abbey Road " is my #2. I still feel a sense of loss when I hear the opening piano chords of Golden Slumbers. To me, it conveys a bittersweet ending to the greatest band of brothers that ever entered a recording studio. Beatles forever! As George so rightly said, " The Beatles will exist without us. "

      Could not disagree more , Phil Spector changed music , he influenced many great rockers including Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon . I guess because I was born in the 1940s I have a different frame of reference , rock and roll was greatly influenced by R+B and Phil was ahead of his time . The long and winding road and across the universe would have been great recordings either way . Orchestration was always a part of the Beatles production. I can’t give much credibility to reviewers that were not born yet when these albums were released because they were ground breaking and if you never heard what followed them before you heard these albums for the first time then your reaction to hearing them would have to be different. Very hard to explain the evolution of rock and roll to anyone who did not live through it .

    • @curly_wyn
      @curly_wyn ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely disagree. I like the Spector stuff on Let it Be. Idk why everyone hates it. The problem wasn’t the orchestrations and choir, but how they were mixed. The 2021 remix is the best version and does have Don’t Let Me Down on it. And, I feel Let it Be Naked (being made in 2003) has a way more dated sound than Spector’s accompaniments do.

    Agree with just about everything, especially Let it Be. Most interesting is Help. There are two lame cover tunes, and George hadn't yet fully hit his stride, but John and Paul were never better. Yesterday is arguably the greatest song ever written, and Hide your Love Away may be greater. Every song from both is an absolute classic. They hadn't begun drifting apart (despite the fact that the best two aforementioned songs on the album were basically solo efforts, but take a song like the sublime "What you see" where they're brilliantly singing back and forth to one another with harmony included), there was no cheese in Paul, no weirdness in John, and both voices were so electric. I believe had this album been only John and Paul songs it would have been their all time best, by a fairly wide margin. Said another way, I think it's zenith of epic Lennon/McCartney.

    • @turtleflegel6816
      @turtleflegel6816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Millions of songs like Yesterday? Comparing Yesterday to Michelle? Quoting Dylan, who's as weird and off color as he is genius? Gimme a break, dude, you're entitled to your opinion, but you're spewing utter garbage.

    • @JTCurtisMusic
      @JTCurtisMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@turtleflegel6816 Yesterday is a well written tune, but it didn't even make my Best Beatles playlist. I could name at least ten other tunes Paul McCartney wrote that are better than Yesterday:
      Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere, For No One, Got to Get You Into My Life, Penny Lane, She's Leaving Home, Blackbird, Maybe I'm Amazed, Band on the Run and pretty much anything off of Abbey Road (except Her Majesty).

    • @turtleflegel6816
      @turtleflegel6816 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JTCurtisMusicOk, I won't take the easy road by proclaiming the entire world agrees with me, I'll stick to the merits of the argument. Yesterday is not a "well written tune," it is an immaculate work of art, an ode to the human spirit closely resonating with any soul born to this world. Lyrics like "why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say, I said something wrong now I long for yesterday," or more profoundly, "suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be, there's a shadow hanging over me, oh yesterday came suddenly," deal with universal themes of loss and diminishment, set to a melody from heaven, with the mind blowing innovation of strings in a pop song. You compare that to a brassy singalong (albeit a great one) like Penny Lane? I'm expected to take you seriously? Your best of playlist was by your own admission a go-to favorites, not a best of, or you wouldn't have chosen the 5th best song on Pepper and left off a Day in the Life, the second best Beatles song after Yesterday. By the way Her Majesty could be the best thing from Abbey Road after Because -- the perfect send off for the most perfect band -- and Blackbird is a poor man's Mother Nature's Son as Eleanor Rigby is a poor man's Yesterday (as high praise as I can assign any song). These are matters of opinion, the greatness of Yesterday fact. My favorite Beatles song may be Dear Prudence, but I understand the difference between ballad for western civilization and personal preference. Don't compare a call to humanity with an appeal to a celebrity's sister to leave her room, or a nostalgic street in someone's home town. Even John and Paul, who both knew along with everyone that Paul could never quite measure up to John as a songsmith, knew Yesterday was as good or better than anything John ever did. If I can't convince you that must. You're obviously a talented guy who's forgotten more in the last five minutes about music than I'll ever know, but I know the Beatles and understand important music. You sabotage your credibility when you compare Yesterday to freaking Wings songs for God's holy sake (even if their two best ever efforts I have to agree).

    "Abbey Road" is the best record in history, not just in The Beatles catalog.
    We disagree about "Revolver", though. It's my 7th favorite Beatles album, or something like that. But I do respect who loves it :)

    Fair play to you for trying to rank The Beatles albums. I went through that in my 20s and 30s and even now in my 50s . I personally can't chose between Revolver and Abbey Road. It can change on a weekly or daily basis.

    Out of curiosity, if Let it Be Naked was replaced by the original Let it Be, where would it place on your list?

    • @jayburdification
      @jayburdification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My preferred way of listening to Let it Be is with the original track order, but with a mix of my preferred version of each song. I also added Don’t Let Me Down. Taking that into account, I’d rank it 8th behind MMT and ahead of Help. Otherwise the original Spector version drops to 10th. My track listing goes like this:
      Two of Us - 2021 Mix
      Dig a Pony - Naked
      Across the Universe - Naked
      I Me Mine - 2021 Mix
      Dig It - 2021 Mix
      Don’t Let Me Down - Naked
      Maggie Mae - 2021 Mix
      I’ve Got a Feeling - 2021 Mix
      One After 909 - Naked
      The Long and Winding Road - Naked
      For You Blue - Naked
      Get Back - Original Glyn Johns 1969 Single Version
      Get Back (Reprise) - 1969 Glyn Johns Version

    My best friend and I have the argument all the time. We were both born in 1960 so we were raised with Beatles. I remember going to the record store to buy the White Album with my sister.
    My friend puts Rubber Soul at #1 and I like Revolver. But the argument is pointless. They’re all incredible.

    Good ranking, JT. Although, I’m shocked you didn’t mention “I’ll Follow The Sun” from Beatles For Sale. Really love that song. Prob my top 5 fav off that record.
    Also, the fact that you didn’t mention “Julia”, “Martha My Dear” and “Mother Nature’s Son” when mentioning The White Album OMG’d me. Anyways, love the video. I do like your ranking. Hopefully, you do some more of these. Very excited for the Curtis edit of History Of Rock N’ Roll 1980 and Pink Floyd album ranking. 🤘ROCK ON

      being on Let It Be. I’m not a fan of “The Long And Winding Road” (since it’s very overblown and overly dramatic.)

    The universal tone of music was forever changed do to the arrival of the Beatles..The first song that shook my senses was I want to hold you're hand....There's was the influences of American blues and soul and Bob Dylan was played by all the Beatles.....and they were so polished for guys in their early 20s...The people at the right time...me and my friends listened to each album as they progressed.....Some good comments from the author on his favorite songs....I'm 70 years old and my friends and generation grew up listening relating to the music...best time for music. Rock on. 🎶
