The first half there is so much improvements on their game, the second half is almost the same game released every year. Shows you back in the day, devs were actually allowed to make games they loved, now they have to make games that yoink money from children with their moms credit cards.
One thing is that back in the day there is just much more room for improvement...but i do agree that it‘s more reasonable for sports game nowadays to release new titles maybe every 5 years like other games.

Ah FIFA 03. Played that A LOT. Never figured out how you could score legitimate free kick. However, keepers were really stupid and could be exploited. One thing was to strike under the ball as much as you could and time it right. If you were anywhere near the goal, the keeper would almost always let it slide in. Even worse, if you were on the attacking half but far from the goal, all you needed was to double tap the O-key to drive the ball towards the goal. We had to make a pact to not exploit that. The double-O was also lethal in goal kicks. A defender would run to collect the ball, but a forward would be near by pressing him. Controlling mechanics were so bad that the forward had an excellent chance of winning the ball and get a great scoring opportunity.
FIFA 11 - FIFA 16 including FIFA Street was my golden era. Loved every single game and the joy I got out of those games seem to be missing in the newer titles :(
FIFA 98 was my favourite every time I hear song 2 by blur I think of it, me and my mates would play it constantly especially after we had been to the pub it also had the greatest ever arsenal team on it. Even though I had the later PS1, editions, I often went back to it, reformatted my memory card and make all the transfers of real life and make my dream teams. Loved making my own tournaments which you didn't get in later games. Loved taking free kicks and penalties in that game too. Grafics were utter shit but god I loved it. That and world Cup 98. Never got the same enjoyment factor out the series after. Especially after 13.
They were still at least 1 year from representing the stars of the moment with accurate graphical depictions, but I remember very well Valderrama having his afro and me thinking "omg it's actually him!".
Man, Fifa 01 on the PS2 will always hold a special place in heart. I was 11 when this game came out and it was my first game on the PS2. I played it every day for hours! Good times. (Even though my parents didn’t approve of my gaming time back then lol)

You could curve in 02 if you pressed two buttons at once when shooting but the player looked wonky as hell doing it. 03 it was only for free kicks. In Euro 04 you could curve but only with the very best shooters. Same with 05 I think.

There's some interesting things in this video though. Despite owning an playing all of the main FIFA games to date, I wasn't aware that replays came in as early as 96. And that skill moves were introduced in 98.
