    I think polarity does matter with this particular hotend on the board (4.2.7 Jyers firmware). When I first switched on and attempted to heat up the nozzle, the printer switched itself off and back on. When i switched the extruder heater cables over, the issue was gone.

    • @BV3D
      @BV3D  ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Hi Bob, I think you're right. While the heater cartridge itself is not polarized, the breakout board on the Sprite side of the cable may be sharing ground lines between the heater cartridge and other components. If these are the wrong way around, the 24v line gets connected to ground when the printer tries to heat the nozzle, and the board resets. I'm pinning your comment so others see this.

    • @WillStrip4Bacon
      @WillStrip4Bacon ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Can confirm the polarity does make a difference. I had to take everything back apart because while testing preheating would loop the power. For the life of me I couldn’t remember where I saw this bit of info. Went back in switched the cables and bam temp didn’t power cycle

    • @BV3D
      @BV3D  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WillStrip4Bacon Sorry for the confusion on this one. I was thinking in terms of the heater cartridge not being a polarized component, and wasn't expecting the heater cartridge's "ground" lead to be shared with anything else on the Sprite's breakout board.

    Bless you for making content like this. Some of us are on the casual end of 3D printing, and while we want the prints, and we sometimes require the upgrades to get there, we don't have the kind of engineer brains that easily memorize all the parts, ins, outs, etc. of our devices. I found this video after reading over a write-up on direct drive replacement for a stock E3v2, and it made such an assumption about my preexisting knowledge: there wasn't even a single photograph to help me understand. Being able to get this ELI5 breakdown with video examples of every single step is so important for a user like me, and this isn't the first time your channel has helped me out like this. Thank you for all your good work and your friendly, accommodating presentation. I, and people like me, really appreciate you.

      Thank you for replying.
      With the help of my son looking at his and telling me he pulgged it in with the short wiring included with my auto leveler, I was able to install it. I didn't even remember that a short wire came with the cr touch! I removed the extruder so I could see and reach the spot.
      The last problem I am having is that the hot end probe isn't heating. It blacks out the printer control board screen, then restarts without starting the temp on the probe tip. Due to a nut placement on my Aquila mother board, I had reversed the connectors for the bed and hotend. after correcting the plugs, it is still blacking out the screen and restarting without performing the temp check.

    I got this a few months back and installed on my Ender 3 V2. I had few issues that I wasn’t able to sort out so I went back to Bowden. I will say, the few prints I was able to do with this extruder I was very happy with.
    I do own a CR Touch and when I reached out to creality about the cable, they sent me one gratis which was cool. Regardless with the CR Touch installed I couldn’t use the max build volume given the new offsets. I know now there are some firmware tweaks to do to fix that.
    My other big issue was the thermistor connector would never seat correctly on the board. It would constantly come loose resulting in the printer going into thermal run away and shutting off.
    I’ve since shelved the sprite but I plan on revisiting once I get a second printer, my plane was to buy and Ender 3 Max and try my luck there.

    Thank you for the great step by step! Just one side note: For those who have an Ender3Pro older than 2020 I recommend reformatting the SD card when trying to save the E-steps or else it will never save. Yes it only saves on the SD card for some reason... and only if the mini SD card has been reformated.

      I did the same also. Basically took out the "guts" of the OG extruder leaving the frame so can go through the filament sensor still and the bowden coupler so that I could still have bowden tube from the sensor to the direct drive filament inlet. Keeps from having to reengineer a place for the sensor on a top feed spool holder.

    I did this upgrade this evening, along with putting ferrules on the main power and bed wires.
    Did the ferrules first and made sure that was done properly before swapping the extruder.
    Other than a tight workspace for fat fingers it went well.
    Turned it on, and no magic smoke.
    Tested the fans, all good.
    Hot end was showing -14°C...hmm
    Let's do a PID tune.
    BEEEEEP MINTEMP error.
    Open up the electronics box, check the thermistor cable. Seems to be seated fine, but still giving an error.
    Plugged the old thermistor in to make sure I didn't bugger up the board and it was fine.
    Plugged the new one back in and checked the cabling.
    Apparently the cable didn't seat properly on the extruder end. Reseated it, and it was happy. What should have been a fairly quick swap took a few hours to complete.

    Nice walkthrough. Have one of these things on order (delivery expected this coming Wednesday) for my E3v2 after having multiple headaches over the past couple of years with the stock hotend that I just can't seem to fix in a way that lasts. I'll get it working "just right", and it'll be good "for a while", then it'll start jamming at the nozzle - it behaves like a blocked nozzle, but no amount of pulls, or needle probes, or even nozzle replacement cures the problem long-term. I suspect that my bowden tube isn't getting placed "properly", or perhaps it's "burning away", or any of several other "perhaps..." items. Since the hotend fan is also doing a good impression of giving up the ghost, and I've been wanting to start working in TPU, which wants a direct drive extruder anyway, figured it was time to pull the trigger on getting the Sprite.

    I like how you do these upgrade video's. Minimum off-topic rambling while touching on all the pertinent actions that need to be taken. I'm watching your installation of Sprite Pro to a 4.2.7 board primarily to verify my wiring. Those spare JST male plugs make this task harder than it needs to be. One observation that I have noticed several instruction videos say is this. " No mount for BL-Touch."
    There is no mount on the X-Axis plate as you say, but the mount is on the extruder itself. Just to the right of the hot end cooling fan. Sort of between the hot end fan and the part cooling fan. I ran a thin wire fish tape through that long ribbon cable and pulled the BL-Touch wire up to the Sprite.

    I have this running on my Ender 3v2 :) On some versions of the sprite kit, the heater cartridge is disconnected from the back plate - look for the two red wires going from the heater cartridge to behind the fan. You need to fish out the plug, and plug it into the appropriate socket, or the hotend won't heat :) Also, thing 5421432 provides an adapter for the CR-Touch, without which the probe can' reach the entire bed.

    I just upgraded my Ender 3 Max with the Sprite Pro Extruder kit. Working in every other way but the speed as slowed right down while printing. It is set on the screen as 100% speed but seems to be only doing half that. Is there something I forgot to do with this upgrade. Thanks

    Hi, really awesome explanation, I'm thinking to upgrade my ender 3 pro with the sprite pro extruder but would like to know what advantages have you noticed after upgrade compared with the stock one including the high temp printing capability, can we print faster, can we print cf or other special material with it?

    I'm about to get this kit and get rid of the bond tech extruder system I got. I've had nothing but trouble with it and they don't make replacement parts or I haven't been able to find them for the gears that push the filament through to the hot end.

    great video thank you for taking the time to put this together! Just installed the sprite pro onto an ender 3 max neo. Exact same board as yours, i noticed it looks like you just left the electronics enclosure fan unplugged - is that correct / not needed?

      I'm new to this but there's a heat sink in the electronics box, so something is getting hot. Since they put a fan in there, it could get too hot without the fan I'd think and possibly lead to damage or even fire.

    After installing my Sprite Pro with the Professional Firmware and my BLTouch I thought everything was fine. I trammed the bad set the offsets to match the BLTouch bracket, these are known offset values. When I print everything homes fine but the nozzle is several millimeters to high. I used the same firmware and BLtouch with my stock Ender 3 v2 extruder and it worked like a dream. I'm out of ideas, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

    In my Ender 3 Max 4.2.2, I'm pretty sure the hot end fan leads share the same connection as the mainboard fan leads. When I went back to start connecting things, the mainboard fan leads were dangling loose but were bent just right to suggest they were connected in the _same place_ the hot end fan leads were.

    Thanks for this really helpful video. I have just installed the Sprite Extruder Pro+ kit on my Ender 3 S1 but there is a discrepancy in the instructions. You said the steps/mm needs to be set to 424.9, but the manual in the box says it should be 475 - which setting do you think I should use?

    I noticed in your video that your heater cartridge is already plugged in to the sprite's board but it did not come that way for me (and many others). The connector was wedged behind the fan and there was a blue note on it that said "connect before use". Wasn't anywhere in the instructions!

  • @thenwosucks

    One thing that had me confused on this upgrade was the fact that the original cable connected to the fan plus and minus terminals had a split in it where the motherboard case fan was attached. The new cable did not. I saw you disconnect this red connecter in the video, but did not see how you connected back to power. I ended up cutting the original cable just after the fan plug and connecting both this cable and the new fan cable into the terminals so the motherboard case would still have cooling. Any comments on how to do this better? Thanks for the great tutorial!!!

    Thank you always for the great videos, and I especially appreciate you doing ender 3 Max videos. Question my y-axis keeps skipping and I really believe it's due to temperature due to the motor being hot. Can you make a video on making sure the voltage is correct? And I also noticed that the end of three max doesn't have a 4234 on the y it has a 4240. I have a 4.2.2 board and I don't know if I want to replace the motor the board and just your thoughts on troubleshooting the situation or things I should buy or look into. Be really interested to see a video on what you thought. Thank you for your time
