    Hello everyone! I wanted to clarify a few things just in case:
    1. These quizzes prioritize the *geographical location* of the subdivisions, which is why some (e.g. Canary Islands, Mayotte) are excluded. They have been covered in the relevant videos.
    2. Some regions are disputed or deserve a longer discussion (e.g. Transnistria, Kosovo), but unfortunately there just wasn't enough extra time for that here.
    3. I hope it's clear that I only make some lighthearted fun of certain stereotypes, I don't genuinely believe that some languages are "bad" etc. I love that most countries have such distinct languages and cultural identities!
    4. I did try to pronounce the subdivisions correctly, but am very aware that I got lots of them wrong.
    5. Some people think I'm cheating, but I do have footage from another angle in case people really want proof that I'm not.
    6. Finally: No, I have indeed never touched grass, sunlight burns my eyes, and the very idea of social interaction makes me squirm
    I hope you have a nice weekend!

      I listened to the Finnish part, and that was perfect. Did you say you are a Swede? I guess you have a Finnish parent or come from Haparanda or something like that. By the way, how did Keski-Suomi get green beforehand? (I didn't watch the entire video.)@@MercateerGeo

    The fact that you managed to accomplish this right after doing the Asia video 2 weeks ago is extremely impressive in it's own right. Not to mention the amount of time it must've taken to edit and add all of the details of the country you are doing, as well as adding all of the timestamps with the correct subdivision terms in them.
    Most impressive, though, is that you managed to do Iceland. The spelling speaks for itself.

    • @MercateerGeo
      @MercateerGeo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha, I appreciate you acknowledging the effort that goes into that, it's the most tedious part of all this for sure. As for Iceland, I suspect that knowing Swedish has helped me recognize the components of those long compound names. I struggled a lot more with the Slavic place names, because they sometimes look like a random pile of letters to me...

    You almost nailed the Romanian pronunciations, just one heads-up: you missed a majority of the diacritics, mainly ă, î/â and ș, though you got ț. Ă makes a sound akin to uh and ș is a sh sound. Can't really find an equivalent for î, though im pretty sure Romanian counties don't use î. Very cool to see someone outside of Romania not absolutely butchering our names, im Romanian and even i twist my tongue sometimes.

    The portuguese districts haven't been administrative divisions in more than a decade. The position of district governor doesn't exist anymore and administration is done by the intermunicipality associations now.

    • @MercateerGeo
      @MercateerGeo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks for your comment. After looking into this, I'm still rather confused, as the districts are listed as the first-level divisions in most places, but are also described as being "in the process of being phased out". And I see that the offices of civil governor have indeed been extinguished (but not *de jure*, apparently). I'll make sure to comment on this when I cover the whole world.

    • @pedronogueira607
      @pedronogueira607 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a little confusing, because they are still used as geographic divisions for electoral purposes, but they have no administrative powers anymore and they're not really used for anything else.

    Just a note :
    Karelia was never part of finland in all pf history not even when finland was under Swedish rule for hundreds of years.
    "Karelia" MAY have been inhabited by finno-ugric people but thats thousands of years ago, the first country to be established in the region was the Novgorod republic which was mostly populated by east slavs (predecessors of russians) and was founded by them and the Swedish/rurik Vikings who are still somewhat of a fairly tale more then a documented fact.
    Some arab maps shows the existence of Novgorod and other east slavic states way before 862 or 882 establishment of Novgorod rus and kievan rus (Novgorod rus captured kiev and made it kievan rus)
    So Novgorod always controlled karelia from 862 - 1400s (Novgorod wasn't absorbed by the mongols but fell later on to the grand duchy of Muscovy)
    And during that 600-700 years literally half finland especially its northern part was controlled by Novgorod abd lapland region (norther finnoscandia) was disputed between sweden-norway kingdoms and the Novgorod republic)
    Finland only came to existence as a true nation when it was a grand duchy under the russian empire and it only came to existence as a true country in 1918 . For 99% of its history it was part of sweden and russia ans thier variations.
    So finland onky TRIED to occupy karelia when the russia empire was falling but the newly born ussr TOOK KARELIA BACK even tho lil finland occupied it for just COUPLE years.
    So i dont know why you think they "took" karelia from Finland when in reality it was never even part of it. And for the most part it was populated by east slavs even today they make up 85-90% of karelia's population...
    Either way great video and knowledge about all these, personally i only know about 50-70% subdivisions of just 8 European countries (france spain russia uk italy Germany greece turkey)

    • @MercateerGeo
      @MercateerGeo  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I said that without being well versed in history and shouldn't have said it 😬 I grew up hearing that we "lost Karelia" but it was more an attempt at humour than anything, and I didn't think about what I was saying. I take accuracy very seriously so I regret saying it so nonchalantly and really appreciate you providing some proper historical context.

    Little correction:
    While we do speak Catalan in Valencia, when people say they speak Valencian they aren't necessarily claiming Valencian is a language apart from Catalan, it's just "Valencian" is the traditional way to refer to the variety of Catalan spoken here, I myself am a Catalanist and I always say I speak Valencian.

    • @WillySalami
      @WillySalami 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@oplixgaming670 First of all, because it's our language, lmao.
      It's the language of my land, of my town, of my people and my nation. I've been born and raised with this language, and I feel way more comfortable speaking it than speaking Castillian. This doesn't mean I hate Castillian, I like it, but it is not my language.
      On the other side, no, it doesn't create any confusion, and it isn't that similar to Castillian, I don't know where you have seen such statement, but Portuguese is more similar to Castillian than Catalan.

    • @WillySalami
      @WillySalami 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@oplixgaming670 It may sound like I'm dramatizing it and introducing an emotional factor to the discussion, but when the possibility of you not being able to speak your own language starts to loom... You get really angry when people literally ask you why don't you collaborate on a literal linguicide.
      Btw, I'm not saying the Spanish state forbids me of speaking my language, the problem's Castillian immigration and non-integration.

    • @oplixgaming670
      @oplixgaming670 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @WillySalami "linguicuide" as you call it Is a completely normal thing. Every country has standardized it's language. If you cannot stand switching some "a"s for "an"s and shit like for at least official communication and laws, that is just pettiness. As someone with roots in Aragon I think that Aragon converted to Castellano was really useful. Every part of Spain has enthusiastically switched to a system of standardized communication and understanding While you guys are being petty.

    • @WillySalami
      @WillySalami 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@oplixgaming670 No, it isn't. Btw I don't know why we're speaking english if we both speak Catillian but ok.
      You clearly don't know how languages work and how things are here, and it seems like this ignorance is widespread through all of the Castillian-speaking territory.
      We don't speak our language out of pettiness and we don't speak our language because we hate Spain and Castille and like to make Castillian speakers feel excluded, we speak our language because it is our language. And the regional authority makes its laws and stuff in the regional language because it is the freaking regional language, while Castillian comes from outside and is only spoken here because of Francoist repression and Andalusian migration.
      In Aragon (the CCAA, not the ancient crown) Castillian has always been spoken, Aragon never "switched" languages, the main language of Aragon has always been Castillian. Every part of Spain hasn't "enthusiastically" switched to Castillian, every part of Spain has either been forced to or has always spoken Castillian. Simple as that.
      If you don't like us speaking our language, why don't you let us go? Let the Catalan Countries be independent and then you'll get your homogeneous Castillian Ethnostate.
