    Casuals will talk about how "versatile" Ben Simmons is. Ok, sure, whatever. But Rudy Gobert's defense doesn't NEED to be versatile. He changes the game so much just being who he is that teams throw away their offensive schemes when they play the Jazz. Gobert doesn't need to be able to guard the best one-on-one because their offenses can't flow effectively when he's on the court. People will talk about how James Harden killed the Jazz in the playoffs and that's true, but James Harden is the anti-Jazz. He's an iso-heavy shooter who doesn't work in an offensive scheme--he IS the offense. That's a unique situation, but other than that, there's not a team in the NBA that can play comfortable offense with Rudy Gobert on the floor. THAT'S impact.

    • @Max-kv8uw
      @Max-kv8uw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@MikeTheNBAGuy So if we are judging who is the best defender we surely have to think about who limits the opponents points per possession most when he is on the court, correct? That is, in my opinion, what defense is all about. Now we can't just look at defensive rating alone because it is a team stat and we are judging single players.
      The first step forwards from here is to look at what happens when the player who we are examining goes in and out of the lineup; and very well you pointed to the Sixers doing very well defensively in that stretch when Embiid was out with injury. However, I think if you decide to make an on/off argument, you have to acknowledge that Gobert beats absolutely everyone here, as was shown is Hoop Venue's video; this point goes to Gobert not Simmons.
      Now we can get even more sophisticated by trying to fix the faults with regular plusminus data by taking into account teammate and opponent strength; here again, Gobert is an outlier today, and is putting up the best numbers of all time.
      All in all I don't think you can make a serious case for Simmons that is based on statistics because there is not a single one measuring impact where Gobert not only doesn't beat Simmons by a landslide but also every other player in the league; indeed the numbers pretty much point to Gobert having the best defensive season ever in the databall era.
      Now you could detach yourself from the numbers and try to argue purely from film study, which I wouldn't necessarily advocate for but would nevertheless entertain. How would you argue on a skillset basis that what Simmons does is more valuable than Gobert because historically pretty much all the great team defenses have been led by great paint protectors like Gobert.
