A couple of things I do, that are not what most others do. They work for me. My camping is from a canoe or motorcycle. I’m 86, and do not backpack. (1) before setting up my tent, I use the side of a trowel to scrape the sleeping area clean of sticks, stones, pine cones, pop cap pull tabs, etc, etc. That protects my tent floor, and saves spending $30-$60 for a $5 footprint. (2) To protect the camper (me), I put a plastic bathtub into the tent first, before a sleeping pad. I measure the tent floor, and add 8” to both length and width. From a local hardware, I buy sheets of plastic, visqueen. Mark and cut a panel that is 8” longer and wider than your tent floor. Lay it out and fold up a 4” high collar all around it. Miter each of the 4 corners, and secure each with duct tape. If rain water gathers around your tent, it will come through your tent floor. A footprint will not help you. The plastic bathtub can keep your sleeping bag dry. The camper is protected. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Hey, I'm the guy that said "first". I still think that's funny. As far as live streams go..... I'm going to be really honest. Defiantly give it a go. You will make extra money with super chats and donations which will help your channel. However, there are trolls out there, and you need to be thick skinned about it. Don't take the negativity personally, and ignore it. I can only speak for myself here, but I watch your videos to unwind and relax, because at work I have to deal with people like TH-cam trolls. Just on the comment section of your vids, you have always answered any questions I have asked. Love your work. Much apricated.

This valley is a beautiful alpine garden, did enjoy your rainy camp, wonderful footage. The idea of live stream is a great idea, you're a natural and will be fine! Whatever you decide to talk about will be just perfect, for ideas; you could talk about the flora and fauna and maybe even history of the area. You are so right, it is such a special little valley. I was there for a day walk with some friends at the end of last year and saw some of the lilies. So pretty.

Love the rainy camps for the sounds but snow is so pretty. Great spot. As far as live streams just be authentically you. You will do amazing. I think its a great idea to allow some a closer seat. Your right it is about trust and you can always block trolls should they come into your space. I have a question about NZ. For a traveler coming there and wanting a more nature driven trip is there a particular area that is best?.

Late at night for me and I needed to relax. Checked TH-cam for a new video. Found your newest release. Enjoyed that rain falling on your Tarp and Tent. I can’t imagine the hard work hiking to a high altitude with all your gear and firewood, then keeping your eye on your camera. Next taking everything down and hiking back to your vehicle. The editing of your footage for a video must be difficult and time consuming. Thanks for all you do. This video relaxed me after a difficult day.

Hi Cathy. Yes to the livestream....and Yes to the hot tent. Just remember that a 5km--8km tramp in with the weight of the hot tent and flat pack titanium wood stove, is the same out. Questions..what got you started on bushcraft.? Tramping etc. Do you, like Becky of "Girl Outdoors" TH-cam channel, Uk go in for wild swimming. My experience was up and over the St Arnaud Range in August in a tarn.And yep there was a thin layer of ice, and yes as a teenager I was slightly mad. It helped to be mad. I had on my bucket list a wish to have a dip in Lake Quill, source of Sutherland Falls in Milford Sound. I didn't. And probably at nearly 78, it's too late. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
Just back from the hot tent camp, and yes I can confirm it was just as heavy returning the other way, lol. I had eaten the weight of the food but added the weight of the moisture on the tent, arggg. Oh my goodness Lake Quill, what an incredible achievement that would be. I walked the Milford at age 7, and then again 3 years agao with one of my children. Incredible place. I didn't dip in Lake Quill but stood under the Sutherland Falls and had a very exciting, freezing and refreshing shower (like a shower with a waterblaster mind you). I can only imagine the temperature of the lake given that it was utterly freezing under the falls in the middle of summer. Perhaps you have sparked an idea for me. Maybe maybe one day.

Yay, I hope you do. It is a bit nerve wracking at first, but if you plan carefully it doesn't have to be. My pack is a 60L Deuter. It has an extendable hood that adds an extra 10L capacity. I am not sure if that is good or bad as I just fill whatever space I can, lol.
It always looks oversized, but I have 4kgs of camera gear, tripod, back up batteries, charging bricks, night lights (the list goes on). Without all of that it might look more like a normal person's pack, he he. I didn't weigh this pack, but it was probably in the early 20kgs.
Hi Mike. So glad you have found the channel and are enjoying watching. This little spot is in Arthur's Pass. Unless spots are part of recognised and popular routes I don't tend to share where they are. Locals can usually work it out, but I like to keep a little mystery.
Camp food is always better than at home. Even the most boring thing I appreciate so much. And oh my gosh, listening to the rain while cozying down into a sleeping bag is the best!
So far the only reason not to take her is if I am going into one of our National Parks, or it is an area that crosses private farmland to access it. In both of these instances dogs are not allowed. I could be sneaky and bring her anyway, she is a well behaved dog, but it is just not how I roll. I like to do it by the book (mostly, lol).
My camp chair has a seat that is at chair height, like a chair at home. When my kids were in school, and I went to visit the teacher, she gave me a kindergarten chair to sit in. That was the last time. I want a light weight seat designed for an adult, not for a 5 year old child. To keep those tiny chair legs above ground, place them in a couple of empty tin cans. Love the rainy camps for the sounds but snow is so pretty. Great spot. As far as live streams just be authentically you. You will do amazing. I think its a great idea to allow some a closer seat. Your right it is about trust and you can always block trolls should they come into your space.
I have a question about NZ. For a traveler coming there and wanting a more nature driven trip is there a particular area that is best?.

Late at night for me and I needed to relax. Checked TH-cam for a new video. Found your newest release. Enjoyed that rain falling on your Tarp and Tent. I can’t imagine the hard work hiking to a high altitude with all your gear and firewood, then keeping your eye on your camera. Next taking everything down and hiking back to your vehicle. The editing of your footage for a video must be difficult and time consuming. Thanks for all you do. This video relaxed me after a difficult day.

Do you, like Becky of "Girl Outdoors" TH-cam channel, Uk go in for wild swimming. My experience was up and over the St Arnaud Range in August in a tarn.And yep there was a thin layer of ice, and yes as a teenager I was slightly mad. It helped to be mad. I had on my bucket list a wish to have a dip in Lake Quill, source of Sutherland Falls in Milford Sound. I didn't. And probably at nearly 78, it's too late. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
Just back from the hot tent camp, and yes I can confirm it was just as heavy returning the other way, lol. I had eaten the weight of the food but added the weight of the moisture on the tent, arggg. Oh my goodness Lake Quill, what an incredible achievement that would be. I walked the Milford at age 7, and then again 3 years agao with one of my children. Incredible place. I didn't dip in Lake Quill but stood under the Sutherland Falls and had a very exciting, freezing and refreshing shower (like a shower with a waterblaster mind you). I can only imagine the temperature of the lake given that it was utterly freezing under the falls in the middle of summer. Perhaps you have sparked an idea for me. Maybe maybe one day.

Yay, I hope you do. It is a bit nerve wracking at first, but if you plan carefully it doesn't have to be. My pack is a 60L Deuter. It has an extendable hood that adds an extra 10L capacity. I am not sure if that is good or bad as I just fill whatever space I can, lol.

Wow, how heavy was your pack? Very impressed.
It always looks oversized, but I have 4kgs of camera gear, tripod, back up batteries, charging bricks, night lights (the list goes on). Without all of that it might look more like a normal person's pack, he he. I didn't weigh this pack, but it was probably in the early 20kgs.

Hi Mike. So glad you have found the channel and are enjoying watching. This little spot is in Arthur's Pass. Unless spots are part of recognised and popular routes I don't tend to share where they are. Locals can usually work it out, but I like to keep a little mystery.

Hi, love your videos. how do you decide when to take Indie with you or she stays home.
So far the only reason not to take her is if I am going into one of our National Parks, or it is an area that crosses private farmland to access it. In both of these instances dogs are not allowed. I could be sneaky and bring her anyway, she is a well behaved dog, but it is just not how I roll. I like to do it by the book (mostly, lol).
Question for your live perhaps: Will your husband or son come camp with you sometime that you will you tube?

My camp chair has a seat that is at chair height, like a chair at home. When my kids were in school, and I went to visit the teacher, she gave me a kindergarten chair to sit in. That was the last time. I want a light weight seat designed for an adult, not for a 5 year old child.
To keep those tiny chair legs above ground, place them in a couple of empty tin cans.

Oh yes I hear you. It’s the last time I buy one with tiny legs too. I understand it is designed to reduce weight but I hate having my knees up in my face. I live with it tho because a seat feels like a luxury and there always seems to be something more essential to buy, repair or replace.
