I'm loving the very short reprise of "West Covina" from 02:32 - 02:34 when Rebecca opens the anti-depressant bottle, I think it signifies that anti-depressants can help lead her to a better life; just like how she viewed moving to West Covina would be back in season 1.
I hate it when people tell others with mental issues that they should be able to fight it on your own. Do they also expect people with high blood pressure or cardiac diseases to fight it on their own? People with thyroid diseases to manage without supplementing hormons? Asthma patients to just breath deeper and skip the inhaler? What a stupid argument is that! Just because your illness/disfuntion is in the brain and not any other organ it doesn't make it any less real or any less treateable with meds.
berlineczka I agree. Where I come from, people don't even think mental issues are an illness. I have clinical depression and they say "You're just sad" or "It's all in your head, get over it". I believe this stems from the lack of education in our country and complete ignorance.
"It's all in your head" -that literally true. I always say - yes, it's all in my head. And my asthma (I actually have asthma) is all in my lungs. They usually stare at me in confusion, and then shut up.
They also expect us chronic pain sufferers to “tough it out” instead of giving us meds and treatments that can actually help. That’s if they believe you in the first place.
I love the part where they're talking about the side affects openly- "that totally happened to me, it got better within a few months "- shows how raising awareness and having an open conversation about this can benefit everyone!
Clearing things up here on a lot of the comments/critiques The song’s main message is that medication is not a bit deal and people shouldn’t feel ashamed for needing medication. Everything else is window dressing but let’s address some things: 1) the show is saying meds fix everything. Nope! The main character has had a history of bad experiences on meds/meds not working! This is part of the reason she’s resistant to trying new ones. The song even covers that not all meds work for the same people! That the meds she is going to try might not work or might have a side effect she can’t handle. 2) the song claims meds repair neural pathways. Nope! That’s JUST for the dog and doesn’t apply to humans. 3) the song says meds will make you happy and that’s not how anti-depressants work NOPE!!! The song literally says “now we’re on pills and it’s less of a slog”. That points to how anti-depressants help manage the depression. “Less of a slog”, meaning there is still a slog, but it’s manageable now. The line “why should feel crappy about something that makes me happy” it is not saying the pills will make her happy, it’s about how she felt shitty and apprehensive about trying new meds when they could help her and she shouldn’t feel bad about that!
This show has been so important to me. I'm sure that to guys I dated in the past I've been considered the "crazy ex-girlfriend" and it was for sure because of the mental health issues I suffered from back then. Back in high school I was impulsive in romantic relationships and did a lot of "crazy" things, and this show helped me see that it was connected to my depression, disordered eating, anxiety, and all the abuse and trauma in my life. Therapy did help me so much in dealing with those things and it followed that I stopped acting "crazy." Meds are there to make it easier on you so you don't have to suffer and struggle through things so much, and it's good to hear the de-stigmatizing message of this song.
Wonderful that you got to the root of the depression, anxiety and issues. The meds are meant to stabilize and that’s how you used them. And, no need to depend on them because the source is dealt with. Well done.
This song literally made me inspired. I’d been depressed for so long and didn’t wanna get medication to help because I was afraid it would change me. I finally got on them and I feel so much better. Thank you Rachel bloom and everyone at crazy ex girlfriend
It will change you. It does not heal neuro pathways like this show is claiming. Scientifically speaking, they block your neuro pathways to your frontal lobe.
this is old but completely inaccurate. what ssris (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) do is prevent reuptake, the process of your neurons essentially reabsorbing serotonin so the serotonin stays in the space between the neurons (the synapse) and can work for longer. depression is an imbalance. essentially, depressed people have less serotonin than they should. in order to negate that, they take ssris. think of it as non-depressed people having homemade serotonin and depressed people don't so they get store bought
I've been watching Crazy Ex Girlfriend during the pandemic to lift me up, and today I saw this. And today I learned the composer for the music died of Covid. I hope he knew his work helped so many.
Everyone's talking about it parodying La La Land but no one's noticing that the first lady to sing actually WAS in the movie. Her name is Reshma Gajjar, by the way! Edit: okay, found at least five people from the movie
They got La La Land right down to the colours and mood and filming sequences, plus the message is perfect for normalizing medication and mental issues. Please someone bury this show with awards, I am in love.
The tap dancing in this song always impresses me and gives me chills every time. Not only is everyone such an incredibly skilled performer, but the metaphorical symbolism of Rebecca being able to join in and succeed is so powerful
I dont understand, what kind of "stigma" is everyone talking about?! A vast majority of ppl my age (21) are taking xanax and all kinds of pills for anxiety and depression. THE SYSTEM B R E E D S MENTAL ILLNESS. Its all a big business! Sick and tired of this depressionistic culture, fetishizing mental illness! All you hear is suicide and sadness, a whole generation of people zombified! Down with the drug craze!
Psy Spirit Clearly you haven’t experienced what it’s like to have people look down on you for needing medication to function. I’ve had depression and anxiety for about 7years and also been on meds for that same amount of time. If it wasn’t for the medication and therapy I wouldn’t be here. You have absolutely no place to judge others who rely on medication to carry out normal lives.
@@MeghanDSouza actually I have experienced a person from my family environment FEELING bad for taking Zoloft whereas we were trying to convince them that it didn't mean they were a psycho. Now, in my friend's environment I've experienced talking about psych meds like it's some cool shit, or just casually being prescribed xanax instead of facing the problem to its core. This generation glorifies drug use and abuse of prescription pills, every song on the radio is about xanax or painkillers, I am sick of this drug-pushing culture. You shouldn't feel bad for using and being prescribed but also keep an open mind. The research is very limited on psych meds, we must demand a better system.
Is it even possible to convey how much it means for sad people to hear this and be told, maybe for the first time, that it's so totally ok for them to take meds? I have never been so moved by a tap dancing number. Thank you,cxg crew, so much.
This number made it really easy for me to start taking meds. I was so scared for all the reason people usually get, afraid it's going to change you, that you'll have a bad reaction. But the chef coming in and everyone encouraging him to keep trying, change dosage, try new meds, really made the process easy for me. I had to jump around and change my dosage but this song had me keep going instead of giving up. Anti-depressants don't make you happy. It makes you ABLE to feel happy. As you keep getting used to it, you can wean off. Without them, I couldn't even get to the point of practicing feeling happy.
I regularly pull this up and show it to my friends who are getting used to the idea of having mental disorders. Normalizing this stuff is a major step in getting people the help they need. Bravo
It’s so-so not a big deal! It’s completely, 100% your choice, but if you trust your therapist enough to share your deepest thoughts and feelings with them, and to trust the rest of their advice, then maybe you can trust them about this, too, and give the meds a try? You are so strong. But you don’t have to do it all on your own anymore.
same, i'm still trying the right thing for me. because of my high blood pressure and ptsd, welbutrin gave me terrible nightmares and interacted horribly with my other meds, and the next one they offered up had a "minor" chance of weight gain- when i researched it, the "minor" seemed a lot more common and long-lasting. This wouldn't be a problem if i was a skinny sort, but i'm not, and my gimp leg depends on me being lighter so that it lasts longer before I need a replacement. so. I'm still looking.
@@basilmemories Finding the right medication is SO difficult. I had quite a lot of success with Celexa early on. That helped me for quite a long time actually. Welbutrin made me gain weight sadly. We did switch up my medication this week though, so experiencing the lovely dizziness of changing to lower dosages. Good luck, it can be very disheartening when nothing seems to work or help.
People are really acting like this show forced you to take antidepressants. If this song doesn’t rub you the right way, then it’s not directed to you. You know who it is for ? People who don’t want to take them because of the stigma. Normalizing medical advancements/ options is the point of the song.

I'm getting fluoxetine today and I'm so relieved that I gratefully listen to this song, thanks to the show to lift the stigma upon depression medication
I used to feel like I was wrong, because I am in medication. This video does not force anyone to take them, It tries to fight the stigma about this issue. I felt good hearing those words, 'cause it made feel like I was not alone, nor crazy or a bad person.
It’s wild that if I’d heard thing song a few years ago I might have started getting better a lot faster. I’ve said said before and I’ll say to again: we don’t deserve the creative and funny and lovely writing this show has put out
For the first time in six years, I recently had to go without my antidepressants temporarily due to an insurance discrepancy. I felt the effects to such an extent that I knew my life was in jeopardy without them. I had forgotten how badly imbalanced I was prior to being diagnosed, and now that I have been safely put back on the correct dosage of medication, everything is balanced again. I'm so thankful for the equilibrium it's brought to my life, and I'm SO thankful for this song putting this entire topic at a reach where people can talk about it. Thank you, CXG.
How far we've come. I remember in high school (the 90s) when my friend was dating a girl, who's mom was protective. Group didn't like the girl much either. Found out her mom was on Prozac, and I remember my group making fun of her mom, in an "ohh that explains it" kind of way. Fast forward, now I'm a parent, who is on Sertraline. I am protective yes, but get praised for it, and I talk openly about taking anti-depressants if it comes up somehow in conversation, which it sometimes does. Son still has plenty of friends and so do I. Now this gem of a show makes many more like me and that girl's mom feel less alone. I'd call that progress.
One of the great parts of this show is Dr. Akopian’s journey in dealing with Rebecca. In the start, she’s questioning if she should even continue with Rebecca due to her consistent lack of progress, and in season 4, as Rebecca begins to accept her issues, she’s happier, more positive and always delighted by Rebecca’s growth and development. Her investment and consistency in helping Rebecca are a big part in destigmatising therapy for me and allowing you to trust in a professional.
@@Shweiss4 I agree. This reminds me of the first song in the movie, but I think it sounds much better. I remember when I actually saw that movie, I was thinking about how I didn't really like the sound of the song too much, it felt like it was missing something.

I wish I had seen this song in high school when I just started anti-depressants. My psychologist tried for six months without and then referred me to a psychiatrist and it truly changed my life. I really love this show.
I’m a year into taking antidepressants and it has genuinely been such a positive impact on my life. Thank Rachel and the entire Crazy Ex Girlfriend crew for destigmatizing them for me.
I've felt like that too! It's almost impossible to feel sad when you're making those happy sounds. (Unless of course you can't get the steps and just get frustrated... :) )
CXG was a vastly under rated show. The songs and comedy were great. All the actors were triple threats (singing, dancing, and acting). I'd like to see more from them, but I suppose the only place where they can fully utilize their talents is on Broadway (where a lot of them came from originally). Musical comedies are pretty rare on TV or cable.
I've been trying to get on anti-depressants for over a decade and I'm finally on week 6 of prozac and watching this over and over is helping me not feel weak. I'm not special because I'm sad :)
Everytime when I feel shitty with my meds I just rush into this clip. Love this show so much!! It really helped me alot when I was suffering with depression.
thanks forever for that show. still watching again and again. while depressed. so thanks. people made and make us guilty to take these and to be depressed but they have no idea how hard it is. everyday is a battle. i send thoughts to all other depressed persons now.
I love how this addresses how mental health issues have been an issue forever, and that people in the past probably would have greatly benefit from antidepressants. Directly contradicting the idea that mental illness is new, thus antidepressants are not needed.
Came to watch this vid again cause I was just prescribed Effexor again for the first time in years and it made me feel guilty. But it's nice to be reminder that antidepressants are not such a big deal and are just another med.
Something about this song just makes me feel happy. I feel like having so many people in it was one of the best things they could do, it really drives home the feeling of not being alone and that there's tons of other people in the same boat as you. Also I love that Dr. Akopian got to sing again.
The lady in purple saying Fluoxetine used to drive me to tears. Something about the sincerity or kindness in her face--even a sense of vulnerability perhaps because maybe she's the first of the other patients to begin breaking the ice about antidepressants
Everything about this amazing. The La La Land send up, done by the Amazing M. Hyatt, was always going to be epic. But the fact it deals with meds (club sertraline here) in a fun way that makes it clear they're OK and normal (love the tap shoes) is just so wonderful. "It's all in your head" -that literally true. I always say - yes, it's all in my head. And my asthma (I actually have asthma) is all in my lungs. They usually stare at me in confusion, and then shut up.
berlineczka by "it's all in your head" they mean I just made it up. F.
I wish people were as coherent as you
It's almost on par with anti-vaxxers who use "all you have to do is strengthen your immune system by yourself" as a basis for their arguments
They also expect us chronic pain sufferers to “tough it out” instead of giving us meds and treatments that can actually help.
That’s if they believe you in the first place.
Lolol! Pause at 2:32 Rebecca was prescribed tap shoes! (... so says the label on the bottle: "Take 2 Tap Shoes 4x daily for the rest of your life.")

I love the part where they're talking about the side affects openly- "that totally happened to me, it got better within a few months "- shows how raising awareness and having an open conversation about this can benefit everyone!
I am so devasted to be losing this show..... To let go of Rebecca.... Best smartest show on the air
It's bittersweet but at least we got all of the full 4 seasons without cancellation! They planned it to end now.

To even let go of this amazing cast that makes me want to weep.
100% the smartest show on tv. And a wonderful help to many.
this song taught me how to pronounce my medication
Clearing things up here on a lot of the comments/critiques
The song’s main message is that medication is not a bit deal and people shouldn’t feel ashamed for needing medication. Everything else is window dressing but let’s address some things:
1) the show is saying meds fix everything.
3) the song says meds will make you happy and that’s not how anti-depressants work
NOPE!!! The song literally says “now we’re on pills and it’s less of a slog”. That points to how anti-depressants help manage the depression. “Less of a slog”, meaning there is still a slog, but it’s manageable now. The line “why should feel crappy about something that makes me happy” it is not saying the pills will make her happy, it’s about how she felt shitty and apprehensive about trying new meds when they could help her and she shouldn’t feel bad about that!
love you
Somewhere In the Crowd and Another Day of Sun mashup?! Love the La La Land send-up.
You are amazing and so strong for realizing you need help, and then getting it!
Good for you!!
I'm really happy you're doing better :) keep up fighting the good fight for yourself!!
I don't know how old you are but it took me decades to figure that out. Congratulations 🎊 👏
MrSimtastic 💜
@@user-jw4bd5id3k that's exactly right. I think they just had to keep it simple for the song

Everyone's talking about it parodying La La Land but no one's noticing that the first lady to sing actually WAS in the movie. Her name is Reshma Gajjar, by the way!
Edit: okay, found at least five people from the movie
talesofnorth even some of the dancers, I recognize their faces 'cause I watched the movie a million times 😂
A+ for casting
I KNEW IT
I was thinking about that! Is that really her? Why isn't she credited?
several people in this number are the same dancers from lalaland's opening scene.
dana wilson on the front left was also in la la land!
They got La La Land right down to the colours and mood and filming sequences, plus the message is perfect for normalizing medication and mental issues. Please someone bury this show with awards, I am in love.

I always cry when Rebecca pulls out those tap shoes. It moves me so deeply to see the positive impact of music on Rebecca's life.
The tap dancing in this song always impresses me and gives me chills every time. Not only is everyone such an incredibly skilled performer, but the metaphorical symbolism of Rebecca being able to join in and succeed is so powerful
This song FINALLY gave Rachel Bloom her well-deserved EMMY!
I am in debt to this show and it’s messages! Slowly getting rid of the stigma and it makes me so happy!
@@PragmaticOptimist your comment is the stigma.
Just like there's an asshole in every room. If you dont know who it is, then the asshole is you
@@PragmaticOptimist Can't believe you just proved Meghan's point lol
OKAY BUT THAT TAP NUMBER
The sounds are a little out-sync, they should've just tried to take the original sound phew
Reminded me of 'We tapped that ass'

@@nxt_tim Really? I didn't notice any disparity.
“WATCH THEM TAP YALL THEY FABULOUS”
Is it even possible to convey how much it means for sad people to hear this and be told, maybe for the first time, that it's so totally ok for them to take meds? I have never been so moved by a tap dancing number. Thank you,cxg crew, so much.
Rest In Peace, Adam Schlesinger. :( thank you for this song and for all you’ve contributed to the world and to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
I'm so glad you're getting better😊
I regularly pull this up and show it to my friends who are getting used to the idea of having mental disorders. Normalizing this stuff is a major step in getting people the help they need. Bravo
This was LITERALLY the conversation I had with my therapist this week. I HATE having to take medication. lol
CutTheFat it took over 20 years for me to find the right medicine, but when I did, it was MAGICAL. Don’t give up
People are really acting like this show forced you to take antidepressants. If this song doesn’t rub you the right way, then it’s not directed to you.
You know who it is for ? People who don’t want to take them because of the stigma. Normalizing medical advancements/ options is the point of the song.
It says it's FROM a tv show, which means there's CONTEXT for it.
People can analyze a show all they want. It's a free country for a reason.

I’ve said said before and I’ll say to again: we don’t deserve the creative and funny and lovely writing this show has put out
Ur name omg
For the first time in six years, I recently had to go without my antidepressants temporarily due to an insurance discrepancy. I felt the effects to such an extent that I knew my life was in jeopardy without them. I had forgotten how badly imbalanced I was prior to being diagnosed, and now that I have been safely put back on the correct dosage of medication, everything is balanced again. I'm so thankful for the equilibrium it's brought to my life, and I'm SO thankful for this song putting this entire topic at a reach where people can talk about it. Thank you, CXG.
I love the la la land reference not only the song itself but the little details like the lamp in the background.
Thodoris Dimos and the outfits!! Reminded me of the outfits in somewhere in the crowd!!
@@Ryan4891s ikr?! The colours of the clothes are very similar!
There are a bunch of the LLL actors/dancers in it, too!
I love that they don't use brand names making this internationally relatable. Thanks, lawyers!
Dr Akopian having another songgg!

I've been crying listening to this song while taking my ad for the first time two years ago because I felt forgiven for being "weak" (I've never been weak mind you, but I felt that way back then). The "honey you're not special cause you're sad" is now so tatooed in my brain. I can be special for so many other beautiful things and it's amazing to have that in mind thanks to this song.

This show and this song in particular are a huge part of the reason I've finally decided to go on anti-depressants after years of struggling, it's amazing that shows like this exist and I'm so grateful to everyone who had a part in it ❤

I’m a year into taking antidepressants and it has genuinely been such a positive impact on my life. Thank Rachel and the entire Crazy Ex Girlfriend crew for destigmatizing them for me.
I love that the song that wins the award is a song sung by an on and off character whom I absolutely love. Bunch and Akopes back at it again!
I always knew tap dancing was an antidepressant!
I've felt like that too! It's almost impossible to feel sad when you're making those happy sounds. (Unless of course you can't get the steps and just get frustrated... :) )
Physical exercise (workout, dancing, sex) makes you produce serotonine, so you feel happier 😌
Eveyone talking about La La Land, but is the tap dance coreography from "anything goes" that really cracked me up lol
The peroxitine guy has such a lovely voice. He's my favorite

thanks forever for that show. still watching again and again. while depressed. so thanks. people made and make us guilty to take these and to be depressed but they have no idea how hard it is. everyday is a battle.
i send thoughts to all other depressed persons now.
I love how this addresses how mental health issues have been an issue forever, and that people in the past probably would have greatly benefit from antidepressants. Directly contradicting the idea that mental illness is new, thus antidepressants are not needed.
My vocabulary isn't sufficient enough to describe how much I love this 😂
Came to watch this vid again cause I was just prescribed Effexor again for the first time in years and it made me feel guilty.
The Oscar goes to Lala... Oh wait sorry, I meant to say Crazy ExGirlfriend

Everything about this amazing. The La La Land send up, done by the Amazing M. Hyatt, was always going to be epic.
But the fact it deals with meds (club sertraline here) in a fun way that makes it clear they're OK and normal (love the tap shoes) is just so wonderful.
