    Josef Prusa is such a cool dude, I wish him much more success in his business. He really seems to care about quality of prints and making 3d printing available to all.
    Thank you for doing this interview.

    Hi Joel, I live in the uk, but just happened to be on holiday in New York when the maker faire was on, so me and my wife went, it was my first maker faire, and I was so disappointed, not at the maker faire, that was great, shook hands with Joseph Prusa , but couldn't find you . Still great day out . Thanks to the guys at Filament PM , when I told them I was about to start printing with PET G , gave me a 1kg reel .

    So jealous of Josef Prusa - the guy just lives 3D printing awesomeness 24/7 and gets to develop community-benefiting stuff all the time. Dream job.

    Hi Joel! It was great meeting you at the New York Maker Faire. I finally lugged the Prusa I3 MK3 kit that you saw me with there home and, after far too many hours, finally got it put together and working. You were right, definitely worth the effort!

    Hey Joel! Thanks for hanging out with Josef and gathering info on the SL1 and on Prusament. I'm still fearful of resin printing (I've got a kid and cats, and they're sometimes unpredicatble).
    Regarding Prusament: You know what would be cool? If Prusa also sold the rejected spools at a lower cost. Even a rejected Prusament spool is probably more in-spec than cheap filament. I could use it in my non-Prusa printers! 👍

    • @vemundkremund3221
      @vemundkremund3221 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      sounds like a good idea, but they're probably reusing the rejected spools. if they aren't, though, that is a great idea!

    • @jmtx.

      Kids and cats don’t mix with toxic chemicals. I’m waiting for when the chemicals are safe to touch.

    • @willierants5880
      @willierants5880 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      BV3D I agree on all accounts. I too do not like the toxicity of Resin printing. Hopefully one day they will make a more environmentally friendly resin. I'm sure smart minds are working on it.
      On the Prusament this is a great idea. I would think that rejected spools would not be reusable because they are already colored. I certainly hope they are not wasted. That would be very unfriendly to both material and environment. So selling these looser tolerance spools is a great option and I'm sure they would sell very well.
      Great comment man.

    • @TexRobNC
      @TexRobNC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I kind of envisioned them selling all the spools on a sliding scale, so if one freak roll has nearly perfect filament, it costs a bit more, and it's all done based on the max tolerance. That way less tolerant rolls are automatically priced lower, etc.

    • @EllTheBob
      @EllTheBob 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BV3D they should do a protopasta and sell good quality rolls that ended up off color for a lower price!

    It'd be cool if they offered the inconsistent color spools for sale at a discounted price, for people who want to prototype before printing the final model, of for people who plan to paint the model and the consistent color doesn't matter much.

    • @dakotapahel-short3192
      @dakotapahel-short3192 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      im pretty sure they just remelt it then sell it full price. id be amazed if they just threw it out.

    • @sinformant
      @sinformant 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dakotapahel-short3192 yeah I wouldn't figure they would throw it away.I'm sure they have the cost of operating their extrusion machines factored into the price of their filament, so if it saves them time and money not having to grind it up, remix it, and Re extrude it its a win win.

    • @willierants5880
      @willierants5880 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not that simple to grind and remelt filament. Must more if it has already been colored and especially if it failed the color consistency test. It's much more economical to PRUSA and buyer to simply sell rejected spools for a lower price, but not offer the consistency guarantees.

    • @willierants5880
      @willierants5880 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That said I suspect rejected spools are rare due to the high precision of the process. Everything is controlled from start to finish. Where inconsistencies occur are when the systems fail for a particular batch and the system probably shuts down immediately when something isn't right which is what all the checks are for.

      most the time, amazon has free shipping on orders over 25$
      most filament, costs more than 25$ for a 1k roll
      most orders of Prusament, should end up with free shipping.... just like most other fillaments on amazon.
      ...and if there is not... just order a bunch of rolls to make it worth it.... or get prime, maybe use a free trial if you really want to save money.

      Out of curiosity I added 15 rolls to my Prusa shopping cart. Cheapest shipping is $10 a roll. If you get several more rolls you're forced to take a different shipper because of weight and the cost goes up incredibly. :(

    • @sherizaahd
      @sherizaahd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angelenglen This IS an SLA printer. This printer isn't even DLP, it uses MSLA, and I don't think there's a claim that it's Laser SLA like the Form printers. Here's an article for anyone who wants to educate themselves about three different SLA technologies - theorthocosmos.com/laser-sla-vs-dlp-vs-masked-sla-3d-printing-technology-compared/

      Consent is based on the DLP components selected. The LCD works like a matrix and is cured by a UV light, not a laser. This is a simpler and cheaper technology with one improvement against the competition at twice the price

    I wonder.... if maybe the filament tolerance check can be on the printer, and the printer adjusts for extrusion to keep it linear.

    • @dandanlec1996
      @dandanlec1996 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably cheaper to have one machine checking the tolerance than to add it on every printer.
      All they have to do is get reasonable tolerances on most spools. They can use the rest in house.
      That could be usefully if home filament extrusion becomes a thing though.

    Although I love the products, there are a couple of notable items here:
    The jamming that's referred to around the 1 min mark ALSO occurs using genuine Prusa filament. When the multi material worked without any blockage, the parts were absolutely stunning. The success rate, however, was less than about a quarter of the time, with the rest completely jamming within the steel tubes. It was an awesome concept for sure, and the engineers at Prusa are absolutely amazing in bringing these to production. In actual usage it was unable to perform as promised. Thankfully there is a new version of the multi-material setup coming to market, and I'm hoping that some of these issues are finally laid to bed.
    BUUUUUUUT - this new MMU setup shines a light in the company's biggest weakness by far. - And that's in their shipping schedule. Granted, we are all buying into a "development / early release" and it's to be expected on delays. But there are orders finally getting filled at the start of this month for the new multi-material units that were ordered as far back as November last year. I'm looking at my order going in April sometime, to be shipped possibly in another month or two *if I'm lucky. This same shipping schedule plagued the original unit as well.
    These are first world problems, I know, and it's awesome that the Prusa name is getting so far wide-spread as it is. I wish nothing but success from the company. Working from the side of simply offering a bit of criticism is something that should be welcome.
    Guessing from the time-table of their previous releases - orders for this new SLA unit would likely be fulfilled next year. These shipping delays should be the company's primary focus for sure, because although he is doing very well for himself, I guarantee that it's absolutely affecting his sales and bottom line for having such a massive spread from initial orders to actual delivery dates to customers.

      I am sorry to say that the new mmu 2.0 do have issues with filament jamming even with Prusas own filament ,though there are several things that can be done to prevent this ,but i still have not completed a 5 filament object without filament jam ,i am though getting closer every day ,and the release of new firmware on a regular basis do help in the right way ....this is the price to be one of the early ones ,maby everything works perfectly when you get yours :-)

      @fassenkugel there r many slavic languages but most very similar although younger generations don't understand other slavic languages that much Robot came from czech language in book r.u.r. which If translated could be something like smartass's universal robots written by Karel Capek but word actually came from his brother Josef. In Czech language robota means work as we wanted to create something what would make our life easier at work we created something what would work for us/instead of us so we created robota aka robot as a thing . Then book points at the fact that robots may be also danger to us but that's a different story. (Oh and am czech living in London xD )

    Any experienced 3d printer operators here? I need some advice, i am currently not at home, far away from my printer :(
    Couldn’t You just print a really thin, squished „foil“ on the print bed before printing something like Nylon to improve adhesion? Or glue a foil on it? It would degrade quickly, but if it only needs to last for one bigger print..

    If it uses LCD isn't it more of a DLP style rather than SLA? Either way I am excited for this.

    • @michaels3003
      @michaels3003 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is similar, but the LCD acts as a mask. The exposures are done with UV diodes below the LCD unit.

    • @JTMC93
      @JTMC93 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaels3003 I know that. It just seems odd cause SLA is a laser painting the image the same way an FDM Printer does. A Masking LCD with UV Backlight still seems more DLP like than SLA as it does a Layer at a time.

    The sensor that Josef talked about that watches for proper color and diameter. Is that too expensive to replace the current filament sensor in the MK3?.... lol Sounds like that tech could be good if it could be duplicated cheaply.

      @mythos000000025 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nullzero98 rather hard to do, but yes I'd love to see that tackled myself. Think screen resolution availability as the easiest part to why it would be harder to manufacture a larger sla printer. His 5.5" screen is probably 4k or possibly something close, think apple screen or galaxy s series rez to keep the print quality high. Layer height is only part of the equation if your pixels are 3 to 5 or more times the size of the z axis positioning

    • @michaels3003
      @michaels3003 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mythos000000025 , it is not 4K... I am sure that price of the LCD unit was a major consideration. I am sure the size will get bigger over time if the prices are good. You cannot get a great price if you only order a few thousand LCD units from the manufacturer.

    Still looks to me like the resin is going to be messy. If that's the build platform he's putting into the washer, that's going to have resin all over it from dipping into the tray and look at how he has to handle it to get it to fit. It's nice to see a Prusa entry into SLA/DLP, but resin handling is a pain and all of the cheaper machines seem to skim over it in their details...
