- I found some time to step in front of the camera and give you my thoughts on the Prusa i3 mk2 3d printer from Prusa Research. It's a wonderful machine, coming in both a kit form and fully assembled. This review is of the fully assembled machine, and hopefully, it lives up to what everyone else has been saying about it.

I just assembled one. The MK2 is an awesome 3D printer. My only complaint about this printer is the LCD knob. Luckily, I can print my own. That's what 3d printing is all about.
I got this printer as a kit about a week ago and I was instantly blown away by the print quality. Many prints later, I'm still impressed. One word of caution, if you use the Slic3r settings from Prusa, Z Hop is set to start at 1mm, which isn't terribly useful. Change it to 0mm and you're good to go.
I did watch the other reviews, but you did add to them in plenty. Often I will listen to reviews in the background and you have a good voice.

Hi Joel! Thanks for the video! You and other reviews on the internet have really helped me solidify my decision on which printer to get to replace my old Printrbot that I lost to flooding. The i3 seems phenomenal for the price. Thanks again and keep up the great work, I enjoy your videos.

I have the MK2 too. I actually did buy a version older than MK2 and they therefore sold me the MK2 upgrade kit with unbelievable price. Thats another thing about Prusa original printers- You can be sure that you are not forgotten, if newer versions come out. I just upgraded the firmware to the latest version and now it has the skew calibration too. Amazing- the printer improves for free after purchasing. every couple of months something new comes out that makes the best printer even better. And the quality of the parts is above any expetations. Great to see other people enjoying it too. Thanks for the video. You got a new subscriber.
Great review, Joel. As someone mentioned, I wondered what you would add, as there are some other great reviews already out there. Watching Tom's live stream build got me to pull the trigger on the MK2. The MK2 was my second printer, after a Geeetech G2S Pro delta. While I still love to watch the Delta print, the G2S is just not very robust. The MK2 is fantastic! The build was straightforward. The online support forums are excellent. The print quality, (as you mentioned) is fantastic. This is a printer I can TRUST to run for hours on end. So many of the sub-$500 printers have cut so many corners that I don't trust them when I am not in the room (just see Chuck's video on the problems with his Wanhao).
Your video excelled by filling in the blanks of using different filaments, and demonstrating that a) the printer -is- somewhat noisy, and b) the noise is easily dealt with.

I actually went and got this kit based on Joel's comments in another video and I'm very happy with it so far. My first printer. I put it together and when I ran the XYZ and self test I held my breath and it turns out my assembly was spot on. No twist or nothin :-) I was looking at the Zortrax but I'm glad I decided to go open source and honestly this thing prints beautifully for me.
That's so ballsy and awesome to print 60 of anything at once. That was really cool to see.
I ordered one in kit form and it should be here by the end of the week ! Keep you posted on the robothut channel once its up and running on my many 3d printed mechanical robot projects.

I built an i3 Mk1 as my first printer in February of this year. I finally finished upgrading it to the Mk2 yesterday (had a baby in there, kinda killed my time).
Anyway, I agree - it's been a great printer, however I don't have much basis for comparison since it's my first one.
Although, if I have one complaint it's the lack of an enclosure. I keep my printer in my basement and I've spent an obscene number of hours fighting sticking, warping and cracking issues, all indicative of low ambient temperature.
Admittedly, I don't have a ton of experience with making yet; it seems an enclosure is an easy thing to build but it's a bit overwhelming to me. It would be nice if one was easily available specifically for this printer.
Otherwise, as a beginner printer, I think it's been a great machine and with Prusa's strong focus on upgrades, I'm so glad I paid the extra money for my i3 compared to the $250 knockoffs I've seen online.
I hope to see a review of the new multicolor printing upgrade when it's available! It looks like a pretty huge advancement in 3D printing that I haven't seen elsewhere!

"It's just poetic, how this printer fixed itself" - that's a quote to live by, even if you break one of its plastic parts, you can do a replacement with it. Thanks to Makers Muse, Tom and you, and also the numerous videos by Josef himself, this will be my very first model in the following months. Until then I keep learning about the materials.
I have the same overwhelmingly positive views and slight gripes. This is my FIRST printer and I guess I'm spoiled as a result. So glad I took the dive and grabbed this one!!

I´m a total newbie to 3d printing, I´ll probably try to get my hands on this printer, it seems great.
I am currently assembling the X-axis and can't wait to print the first part.

You absolutely contributed with your review with many great prints and your opinions.
In my opinion its also a safer printer regarding the electric parts, wiring of mains on DIY kits. And its a lot more value for your money even against cheap clones like the I3 Duplicator variants, that you really would upgrade to a swiss hotend, needs better filament gear and better extruder. Dodgy electrical issues with the Melzi board giving temp fluctuations on higher temps, and no room for automatic bed levelling on the Melzi board.
My Duplicator is now 50% modified parts and with a MKS Gen 1.4 main board and new LCD, new e3d-v6 hotend and titan extruder and a BLTouch sensor. Total price is a lot more than the MK2! (It was satisfying to make the mods tho...)

I have 1 for me, as my FFCP died after 1600 hours and would cost more to rebuild than this kit. I also bought 1 kit for the free time clubs in town, they are building it, hopefully done by this Thursday. And yes, I carry my printer in the back of a truck , on a 15km dirt road, it's fine and it just prints.
-The cooling fan wire broke of, easy fix.
-The town has 240V and we have 120V in the station here, a wide input Power supply would be a neat feature, dumb proofing it.
This printer has been printing nearly non stop since I got it a month ago.
So far I am very very happy. Enjoy it and lets all give this printer a proper endurance test. I agree with all of you guys.
Side note- I also love how it is bright orange. Might have to pick up a kit!

Hey Joel and community! :D I'm currently studying as an industrial designer in Sydney Australia and have been an avid 3D printing enthusiast for a number of years however have never had the confidence to convince myself on buying a printer for the money that would be able to print consistently and reliably with a good sized print plate and quality in mind. I would love to tinker with printers that would be cheaper however i don't have time to figure out problems and waste time when i have deadlines on my printing for assignments. After a year of my course i believe that a good printer is what i need and I've been able to save up $6k Australian after months of work. The printer that i had in mind is called the Cubicon single plus and my local printing shop said it's previous model (cubicon single) has the best reliability printer they have had while maintaining quality and prints. With this in mind I want to purchase a printer now that has the best of the best in mind to last me hopefully till the end of my course easily as well as when i get into the workforce. Ive seen other printers like the Cube pro but to be honest that printer will cost so much to maintain with cartridges costing over twice as much as usual spools of filament. If anyones read this thank you so much for reading and leave any reccomendations for me to research if you think the Cubicon Plus isnt suitable for my purpose. :) Thanks again
Another good reason to get this printer is the support from Prusa. Anyone who has a Mk1 can buy a kit to bring it up to a Mk2. If you bought a Mk1 within a month before the Mk2 was released, the kit is heavily discounted.
hi joel. awsome review. i have a original prusa i3 mk2 for some time already, i bought the first kit and upgraded it to the MK2. one thing i thing u missed to say on ur review is that Prusa made this kits with upgrade so u can have their latest printer without having to buy a full printer like the new kit upgrade coming in november to be able to print 4 colors with 1 extruder.
Was already planning on getting the kit. Now it is more planned.
I want one of these soooooo much :) Will make do with the Mini for now, but it would be an awesome upgrade.

Thanks for this review. I've been having some issues with my current 3d printer which is an i3 clone. It seems I should have looked at more videos, like yours, to see what I might be missing out on with the Original. I was watching your review in bed and by the time it finished I was out of bed and placing my order. Thanks! ...now to just wait for too months while the backlog clears, hah.

Very cool one day I think we may have one of these at our home. the technology has come a long way. My son is interested in this stuff as well. Just picked him up a 3d printing pen.
I have been looking into 3d printers for a while now...my wife is sick and tired of me pointing out many useful things that could be 3d printed. This is the one I'm saving up for.
Groovy! Once you get it, I think you'll like it. For my wife, I've 3d printed brackets to hang her whiteboard, the toothbrush holder, and designed and printed a box with a lid for my daughter to keep her Pokemon cards in!
I'm amazed and didn't know that you could switch on the fly from high powered mode to the silent mode and high powered mode really didn't sound too loud

The fun and beauty of this printer also come with assembling the DIY kit, first you will learn so much about 3D printing and makes you better at troubleshooting problems, I had a thermocouple issue this weekend and I was able to troubleshoot and fix it because I knew everything and where it was.
The second thing about assembling it is the fun and easiness of it, no matter who you are and how much technologically challenged you are it is easy and for everyone if and only if they willing to put the time and patience.
One of my issues with it is printing ABS still not the best printer for abs but also depend on the shape and size of the abs model it performed ok but then again I'm comparing with my Cubicon single which is #1 ABS printer #2 is Zortrax .
It's a fun beautiful printer from the time you buy the kit and start assembling till the time you print on it.

GIPlayer14 hi, it's not a problem exclusive to this printer, ABS is hard material to print with with any printer, it requires closed heated chamber and heated bed to not warp and print good.
That's generally speaking , but any printer can print ABS ok, the Prusa is open printer and does not have closed heated chamber to prevent air draft or environmental conditions from affecting your print.
While it work flawlessly in am isn't temperature conditions (i.e. optimal temperature no air flow, no dust, no humidity ..etc) but depend on where you put your printer the print can get affected with room temperature/ AC draft, and dust particles flying ...etc.
So I have some printers in my office which is cool and has AC to make me work comfortably, open build printers not good to have there because the temperature is low and there is air draft coming from the vents.
While those printers I have there are fully enclosed and that won't affect them.
I have some printers in my garage which is warm no AC or air draft yet no heating when it's cold weather and no cooling when it's hot weather, I have some printers there that has heated bed and enclosed a little such as ( Flashforge creator pro, ultimaker 2)
Then I have open build printer such as Prusa that I have a special room in my house that I keep it and other printers such as the cube 3rd generation and Flashforge Finder ...etc because I don't need that room to have AC and I don't stay in it long time except to setup printers for print.

Salem Abualrous Oh, so it's standard problem with temperature! I have some printers, and couple of years of experience in 3d printing, yet I coulnd't get my hands on prusa i3. Lastly I'm printing lots of with Zortrax, yet Z is very... I can't find word. It prints pretty well, but it has lots of problems with hotend temperature, keeping proper Z distance (undetachable or even melted raft to model), burning lots of models, etc. I know it shouldn't do that, but 2 of ours Zortraxes do that. And filament is very expensive here in Poland. That's why I'm considering two more prusas instead of another Zortrax (because we need another printer).
GIPlayer14 I had similar issue with Zortrax but I fixed it.
1. Don't use Automatic fan speed just take the check out and use 100% speed.
2. Clean the nozzle before and after every print with a metal brush. And during long prints pause clean then continue.
3. Make sure you have z-abs not other material.
Z-abs burn because it has the highest temperature of all the other Zortrax materials.
Finally make sure you have the latest firmware upgrade

I printed a spool holder that takes a smooth rod.
The printer is super quiet, I didn't see the need to do anything for that :)

Seeing a printer this amazing makes me glad I waited so long, 700$ is nothing for that amazing performance and reliability, I just hope I can get my hands on one before they stop making them.

Seems like a really nice Printer
I know this video is really old so nobody will probably ever see this, but I am a recent subscriber. thank you for reviewing this printer. I want to build this printer as I do not have 600$ to pay all at once I am hoping to build it in installments. however, I am having an issue finding metric parts in my area or a full list online in standard measurements.

Thanks for the great review. I am considering buying this machine as my first 3-D printer. The other option for me is the Zortrax machine - thanks for that review too. I am a product developer so surface finish and functional strength are really important to me. I am looking for something that is very good value for money and will involve little of my time fixing problems or picking off support material. HI Joel, in response to the perfect supports you were showing, what slicer and settings did you use? I'm curious because those play a decent role in the supports coming out properly, if I'm not mistaken.
I really appreciate your work in this technology and especially this review. As a newbie in the 3D printing world this is so helpful. I've had a bit of a rough start however in even getting a printer. I decided to buy this printer as a result of the good reviews especially this one. My experience so far has been very disappointing with Prusa Research. I ordered my kit the second week of February and it has still not shipped. They listed a 7 week lead time which is way too long for one to wait but after another failed attempt to buy a copy version from China I decided it would be worth the extra money and time to get the real deal. Prusa has not bothered to notify me of why I am still waiting 9 weeks later. I sent an email and received no response. Its to bad they don't seem to care about how poorly they are communicating with their customer base. And why should they care if everyone who writes reviews has immediate access to their products while the rest of us have to drop almost $800 USD and sit and wait for 10 weeks or more just to get a kit?

I know on their website they have a live chat option, have you tried contacting them that way? Agree, the lead time is terrible, but I know they are working at capacity, and trying to bring that lead time down.

Its Matt. Sorry I thought I wrote that but its not there. I did do the chat twice. Last night they told me to try again today. Today they could only say it wasn't ready. Then I asked for a date and they said between Monday and Wednesday. I hope they mean of next week but truth be told they aren't very free with the conversation. Thanks for the reply. Your videos are great and I've learned a lot from them. Hopefully in the not too distant future I'll get to actually put this printer into action.

Hey Mar1 Thanks for asking. I did in fact get my Prusa. Then I took about ten of the wee hours at night and put it together. It's been really good so far with a bit of a learning curve playing havoc with my planned upgrades and accessories. All total it took about 11 1/2 weeks to get the printer. The Black models are apparently slower to build. I also got the S upgrade which came out during my wait time so that was a bonus.

I found that the using any sort of damper that lifts the printer will eventually cause the frame to twist out of alignment. my vertical frame touches the table and along with the four feet to keep it stable

Great video. I am looking at 2 very different printers. The Raise 3D and the Prusa i3 mk2. The reason I really like the raise is the support material is removed unbelievably easy. There are numerous other reasons, but the cost is much higher. My main questions is how easy does the support material come off using the software for the Prusa?
Have you ever looked at or tried the Cel Robox printer? any thoughts on it?
High five! I was a little on the fence between getting a Wanhao Duplicator (that I had great experiences with) and the Mk2. I'm going to Prague next month and I think I'll purchase it from the man itself. It seems that I will be worth sleeping a couple of days on the bus terminal =D thanks for answering my questions yesterday and this video helped a lot in the decision

+Sebastian Fernández I'm okay with the zip ties where Josef has put them. They are used to keep things in place and it doesn't appear that strain is being put on the ties. Time will tell though, eh?
I was concerned about that too -- as well as the number of critical 3D printed parts. After building and using my MK2 for a few weeks, I have to say, this was very intelligently designed, and both the 3D printed parts, and the use of zip ties work very well.
very cool. would you recommend this for a beginner? how about the kit? is it hard to assemble? thoughts on ABS printing. should it have an enclosure to keep the heat in? please excuse my inexperience. :/
great video! I have a question about the rook. How long did that print take at 50 microns? And how did the helical strand in the middle fail towards the end? I made one myself on a printer I'm not too fond of but it's the only one I have access to and I am interested in how it stacks with a comparable print
it took just under 6 hours, and the helical strand in the middle failed around the first window on the side. I hope that makes sense.

What's great is right now, this machine as a kit is $599 USD. Not too shabby. Though, the mk3 *IS* out, don't forget to look at that one. I'll have a video on that soon.
What would be the pros and cons between it and the n2+. I know a bit of n2+ and I was going to get it but would it be worth just getting a few of these?
