    1:01 it's simply phenomenal that Kelvin, who was no more than 12 years of age at the time, stopped the song to call out the entire crowd at Sunsplash for not appreciating the music enough. So badass

      They don’t need auto tune to sound good. So talented

    • @rapman5791
      @rapman5791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s because they were playing to a backing track, the only thing live was the lyrics, until the member introductions. If you look carefully during the song the lead guitarist doesn’t have his fingers on the fretboard during an obvious guitar run. When the camera is on the keyboards the kid is playing like he’s Liberace but you can’t hear a single note live. They definitely had the feed for the instruments turned down/off during the song.

    • @itik1080
      @itik1080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@rapman5791 idk if you’re talking about the kid as the lead guitarist but if you are, you’re wrong. He was playing the rhythm by skanking, that’s why his hands doesn’t move that much and plus, i don’t hear any lead guitarist in here since there’s no high pitched guitar sound

    British-Jamaican pop/reggae band, 1982 Grammy-nominated single. This song is about a pot used for cooking. Mighty Diamonds performed the song first "Pass The Kouchie" cannabis!

    @musicinmyearstv 9 ปีที่แล้ว +93

    That was never a bad performance for their ages. Singing and playing their instrument at that age is no mean feat. something that even the Jacksons and New Edition never did. Again that was a slow reggae piece.

    Dutchie is slang for a Jamaican cooking pot used to make rice and soup etc. And by "Pass the Dutchie" they mean share food, or pass some along [to others that don't have], "How does it feel when you got no food". Lately, "Dutchie" refers to weed rolled in cigar paper. But in the song they're referring to the cooking pot/food, if you will.

    • @rsh1574
      @rsh1574 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      My friend, in 14 years nobody has explained. Dutchie has always meant cooking pot. When u say dutchie is a spliff u got it mixed up with kouchie which is a chalice(pipe)what rasta smoke weed out of

      The original song is by the Mighty Diamonds called Pass the kouchie. The song is based around Rastafarian use of cannabis. I think as Musical youth where a band made up of kids that they made up another word. So it seemed they were not singing about drugs.

    Hey these were very talented young british kids in the early 80s. They were not left by the reggae wave as the took it upon themselves by learning to play their own instruments. They were inspired by Mighty Diamond's hit song," pass the kutchie" and they remixed and renamed it "pass the dutchie".Bigs up to whoever uploaded this video. I know one of them died of drug-related death and one joined a reggae group, who knows what happened to the rest of the group?

    "Pass the Dutchie" was a cover version of "Pass the Kouchie" [Kouchie being slang for smoking pipe], the name was changed to Dutchie because they were kids when they brought this song out and it'd badly affect their target audience by singing about smoking marijuana with them being under-age.

    These little guys showed amazing talent, truly amazing. The fact that they knew proper smoking etiquette at that age is a bit disturbing.

      This is kinda like a tribute song. Dutchie refers to what we call a Dutch oven. The original song was about smoking refer, when they remade it they didn't want reference weed so they changed it to Dutchie. Last thing, they are Jamaican. .. ¦)

I just remembered hearing a remake of it from missey eliott called pass the dutch and decided to look on utube to find it . I'm so glad you posted this .

    This is really better than any performance ever, especially young folk that was in pure poverty

    looking at your comments, and really paying attention to the lyrics (and the original video) I am beginning to think that maybe this song is often misunderstood. I don't think this song is necessarily about just weed anymore... I think it is about having to live in poverty this is a deep song.

    Same old story for many bands, the hits dried up, record company dropped them, band split. The Bass player turned to crime and died at a very young age from an undiagnosed heart complaint, leading to the untrue rumour I have heard that he was killed joyriding. Two of the band still perform occasionally as Musical Youth.

    Actually originally it was pass the koichie which was a Jamaican weed pipe but they had to change it to Duchie to make it more commercially acceptable. The song is actually about passing the weed around 😂 duchie is indeed a cooking pot but this song is about sharing the weed bro! Nice...
