Bach has always been praised for his contrapuntal skill and formal craft, but he is also one of the very greatest songwriters in the Western tradition. I don't think this is said nearly enough.
Keep in mind that he didn't write much of the lyrics to his songs. They were usually borrowed from older works, typically Lutheran hymns. In this instance, since it is a secular piece, the lyrics were written by German lawyer, scientist, and poet, Salomon Franck in collaboration with Bach.
I only hear the transcendent love of God in this; love for all that is good, the love found within all of us. This should be heard, experienced, by all mankind - past, present, and future.
This is the first Bach work I ever heard, at a young age, as a postlude as I was exiting the church as a choirboy. I remember it so vividly. It was played on a Casavant organ by Murray Rathbone, in St. Peter's Church, in Cobourg, Ontario. People who remark about all the grey hair in the audience forget about me, who followed Bach from my childhood.
Congratulations madame, in these days of great uncertainty and after so many tribulations you have achieved the impossible; you’ve made a hardened New Yorker cry. *Thank you.* _bellisimo!_
It is written: Psalm 92: 1 "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: 2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, 3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound."
Praise God. Also to be understood is that this piece is a secular cantata, and its lyrics are praising not God, but Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels, who was in reality a spendthrift whose habits resulted in the financial collapse of his duchy.
The first time I heard this aria was at my father's funeral, since then it has been played at the funerals of my mother and her brother, my uncle, and I hope it will be heard at my funeral too. And this is one of the most beautiful versions I've ever heard. With Bach's BWV 208 it is extremely difficult not to overdo it by making too much of a show. But in this performance it is beautifully controlled or as Bach would certainly have admitted: 'In der Beschränkung zeigt sich erst der Meister'. These words may have been written by Goethe, but Bach himself is an excellent example of how that principle works.
Wonderful ornamentation in the voice. Everything from full trills to subtle vibrato to simple dynamic swells, and a gentle attack on the consonants. Really conveys the gentleness of this masterpiece.
The first time i heard of sheep may safely from bach its was on tape when i was 14yrs old in time its stop working and tape become opsolite cant afford to buy cd.but in years now i can listen to this beautiful melody thanks to youtube.bach always make me dreams.thanks to ellen and others musicians for this beautiful performance..greetings from mauritius..
Ellen and all, sublime performance. How all the world needs to hear music such as this performed with such care, sensitivity, and fullness of heart. Many and sincere thanks.
How beautiful is Bach’s music! He wrote some of the most beautiful melodies ever written. Outstanding performance here! Thanks for posting! 🍀🦋🐝😝💐🪴💕🎈😀🥰🌹👍
To the artists and the production team, thank you, you have endowed the web with five minutes of serenity. Others more qualified have praised the gentle delivery and the delicate ornamentation of the voice, all I can say is Ms. Ellen has a true instrument.
Oh heavens I found myself conducting and crying. This floated me away emotionally. Bach. Such a gift from heaven to humanity. I guess I'm just a silly old man, but great music touches something deep within my soul.
@MichaSloman It's Jesus. When it says in the lyrics: Sheep may safely graze where a good shepherd watches I'm sure knowing how deeply religious Bach was that he had Jesus in mind and turned secretly the secular piece into a gospel. So it's the love of Jesus and the love of God that you feel that care for your soul like a father for his children. And I'm moved deeply by this beautiful piece as you.
La Musica Terapeutica di Bach mi ha aiutato a sconfiggere la mia Depressione. Soli Deo Gloria onore al grande Kappellmeister di Lipsia. Saluti da Lecce South Italy Baroque City ❤😊
What a beautiful voice! And such a warm and rich timbre and at the same time very clear. Really great! I never heard her. Also very well performed by the other musicians. I'm glad I ran into this.
Gracias.
A truly beautiful performance. Thank you all for your musicianship and for including the translation. Most of all for the beautiful performance of Bach.
Ahh I live in Toronto and I love Bach, but I don't know there is a Bach festival 😢, cantata #208 is always, and has been my favorite, i love to listen, to play, to sing, it is remind me Psalm 23, it is so comforting, i just live this pics so much
Very lovely. I would say that the version where it's there is no lyrics and its just instruments and its left to interpretation of the soul as to how your heart wishes to apply that music is preferable with me personally, but this really puts a name to a face with the music and is an interesting change. Thanks for sharing this!
Beautiful performance of a beautiful piece. I was hoping for some more adventurous embellishment on the da capo but this is still very tastefully done.
@@alindmayI never said she didn't sing well. I'm just saying that Baroque practice is to embellish more, especially on the da capo repeat. Opera is irrelevant to my comment.
Yes I understand your point. Note German baroque is different to italan or french baroque, its less ornamented. And as a German, Bach was against Opera, even German Opera. He wrote every style, just not Opera. He wrote for God, Soli Deo Gloria and never to enhance performers egoes. To sing or perform any instrument for Bach you have to forget yourself, its all for the music, the love, the perfection... and for God. Divas behaviour, shouting more than singing, excessive ornamenting often performed more for performers showoff than for aesthetical reasons is not what Bach liked. Well, thats just my humble opinion, anyway, everyone performs to his own and publics taste and situation and there is no absolute truth in art.

I keep expecting the cantatas to be raided more for beautiful tunes…
The endless Bach barcarole…
Oui ! Il est l'inventeur de mélodies inégalables !
Nevertheless, this piece was expressly written to accompany lyrics. It indeed does possess and oddly contemporary feel.

One of the loveliest renditions I've ever heard. Bellissima 🇮🇳🩷
My thoughts precisely. Exquisite

For me, this is perfect vibrato from the singer - controlled, not too wide and used appropriately. Overall, a lovely performance. A new favourite!
Bach is the greatest composer of all times. It is almost as if his music is not of this world
Perhaps Bach's music isn't from this world. Perhaps it comes from God Himself. A truly transcendent experience.

Laid back, unobtrusive interpretation, with a terrific voice on full display. Exactly right.
Exquisitely sung here by Ellen McAteer and superbly accompanied by players of recorders, cello and organ. Loved it and thank you.
