- The Philippines procurement of 16 units of Mi-171SH / Mi17 Helicopter project was under final negotiations with Russia Sovtechnoexport. Aside from the Notice of Award release, the Department of Budget & Management has also released the Php1.919 billion as an initial 15% funding for the agreed contract cost.

When buying military hardware/equipment, we should not rely on single source/vendor country.
Exactly, and if you noticed PAF already received the initial delivery of Blackhawks which will have similar role.

Company of origin is a better standard but even then it's not a sure deal if all parts are equal.
Just look at Ford and Chevy and how they are doing in Asia and the rest of the world.
@Gerd Wiesler I agree with you, in fact, it would be even more costly for our military if we have multiple types of weapon systems from multiple countries with different philosophies. I'm not saying that we should just focused on a single source of military hardware, but we must also take into account that we must be sure that we can afford to maintain and train the people operating this kinds of weapon systems.

Nope, there are many better items in the NATO inventory like Chinook, Pavelow etc., with better long term services, however the price is too high for PH.
If you have watched well the PAF actually needed to DOWNGRADE the acquisition requirements so the Mil-17 can compete with Chinook. 😛

The US would always want us to have their hand me down equipment so that we are always dependent on them. ayaw ng us na maging indpendent tayo sa kanila. kasi if we dont agree with them then they wont sell us the necessary spare parts or equipment so were always under their leash kaya mas okay if may equipment tayo na di lang galing sa kanila

I've read that Russian aircraft (helicopters/planes) have robust landing gears because of much of their landing grounds are poor/rough. This may suit a country like the Philippines.

Before I was wondering how come the mil mi171 was chosen by the DND when in fact we need a real HEAVY lift heli.not a medium lift category. Now i knew. Still I believe that the DND thru it's g2g deal should be given an independent & 100 persent say on what to buy in future deals minus outside party influence.

I believe the reasons they opted for a medium transport helicopter is because 1. Medium-sized transport helicopters have enough specifications to satisfy the military's needs and 2. They probably want a more versatile helicopter. I was surprised to hear this helicopter has an attack helicopter configuration aside from its transportation configuration. It can carry its own guided missiles, gunpods, unguided rockets and the like. Something like the heavy-lift helicopters like Chinook don't have.

Chinook had a different role and specification hence the PAF had to revise their requirements. it doesn't really make sense to compare the two. Payload wise the Chinook is vastly superior, while the Mi171 is a CUH therefore more versatile and can perform multiple roles.

It's price and form (since the Chinook is too stupidly big and way to complex to be a logical choice) that makes it hard to choose it.
Russia has a bigger chopper way more powerful than the Chinook or any America can make that's more useful

Wala ka rin alam sa US. They are almost on par both negatively and positively in terms of parts availability.
Kahit Ford at Chevy hindi reliable at mahirap yung parts.
Kahit si Lockheed may problema sa parts. Just look at the A-version of the F35 (like the ones the US Marines have) or the C-130 (it's not just us that are having problems of parts with the C-130).
Our Armed Forces of the Philippines need this.

Quantity really is needed for PAF 16 units really is a boost. Especially in times like this especially rescue missions, relief operations it's more efficient than 5 units of chinook
The Philippine Air Force's acquisition of heavy (turned to medium) helicopters appear to have been stalled, after Russia's Mil Mi-171 Hip was chosen over the CH-47F Chinook. But due to CAATSA and other matters, the PAF appears to have chosen to just acquire more Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters instead.

@@giansantiago6860 And now with the war between Russia and Ukraine, and all the sanctions the Russians are getting from many countries, the problem would be exponentially more.
Not only is the Philippines facing CAATSA, but also a perception that we are aiding the Russians by financing its war against Ukraine.
The war also means delays for the delivery if the Russians could even deliver helicopters to us, since they will prioritize production for their own use rather than for export.
And since the sanctions are there, it also means difficulty for Russia to even manufacture and deliver the helicopters for the Philippines.
You can trust Russian helicopters. And they are much cheaper than other makes. If anyone insists on buying the much more expensive ones, there must be some kind of...you know what I mean.

These are the best Helicopters in the world for this category and price. If the typical corruption in the Philippine culture does not kick in, cancelling or delaying the deal, this will give the Philippine armed forces a true world class helicopter.

Think about this. That helicopter can carry about 1/4 of C-130's cargo. Bring 4 of them to a disaster or combat area that C-130's cannot reach. It will do a big difference with these in the inventory of PAF.
And it can be customized into a Gunship..
