Margeret of Austria was amazing. In the face of tragedies and heartbreak, she still persevered and with grace, wit, and charm. My favourite quote of hers was when she was travelling to Spain and was caught in a storm. In case the ship might sink, she wrote her epitaph and pinned it to her clothes. The note said, "Ci-git Margot, la gentil damoiselle, qu'eut deux maris, et si, mouret pucelle" which translated to "Here lies Marageret the willing bride. Twice married but a virgin when she died." It definitely shows what type of person she was in the face of danger.

She was the reason the Hapsburgs managed to rule with such stability after wards.
Intelligent, wise, witty, strong, decisive and charming, she was mentored by the legendary Anne of France who effectively ruled France after Louis the 11th.
She was a faithful daughter to her father, ruling the Low Countris after the death of Phillip. She effectively raised Charles and his sisters, a mother and teacher. She taught them to be effective rulers, so much so that Charles would always have loyal deputies in his sister Mary of Hungary and Ferdinand.
She was a kind sister in law to Joanna and did all she could to ease the pain in their marriage.
Most of all, she raised the future emperors and established the hegemony of the Hapsburgs by always maintaining peace between the family.
    A truly remarkable woman

    • @thunguyen-sn2vb

She was kind of Maximilian's and Charles V's Empress (for their constellation of territories as a whole/in a political sense) No, I don't devalue Isabella of Portugal or anything - she was also brilliant, but their roles were different. Margaret was the main diplomat and the matriarch who bridged the sprawling realms, soothed the sometimes tense relationships between the important males/different generations. Even during Maximilian's reign, he delegated a lot of diplomacy work to her. Her more stable but approachable personality supplemented Maximilian's eccentricity and capriciousness (he was a genius but actually that kind of person tended to face difficulties in the more sober realm of politics), and Charles's distanced and discrete ways.
She lived in many worlds since childhood, and thus was a charming presence to the French and other foreigners.
Charles also had that trait of the universal citizen - I guess that was why he was so known and even loved, even today. I think modern historians are a bit hard on him. 90% rulers would break under that kind of pressure. And despite all of that he still managed to treat his own family quite well by the standards of the time. By our East Asian standards, he was definitely a great monarch. Decent competency level in many areas, being able to get many brilliant people to support oneself... etc Certainly he had moments of distrust, but if one lived a constantly mobile life under high stress, one should be like that. He provided the space for female leaders, and as a woman, I like that.
Max was always the alien everywhere he went. His Germans/Austrians thought/think he was too burgundianized as well. I'm surprised that the Begians and Dutch don't really hate him, despite his naive, brutal and disastrous regency. Actually he left lots of romantic legends, even in Bruges to which he caused a four century long decline. They still remember Guinegate 1479, perhaps. But also for Mary, Margaret and Philip, whom the people in the Low Countries love (Philip was actually the good guy in the Low Countries. From now on people perhaps only want to remember him as the terrible husband of Joanna though). I've just read a book written by Bart Van Loo that makes me chuckle. He talks about Max as if he was this untamable thoroughbred champion that sometimes brought luck and at other times brought disaster, but also happened to be a great sire.

It was partly because she did not have much happiness as a wife or mother, she turned out to be a great career woman. She always had that aspect about her even during her happiest days with Philibert though. She was a pioneer for us women. There had been queens regnant and queens consort but that was such a lottery thing for the very few. Margaret's career as a governor/official, even with the help of her blue blood, opened new ideas about the role women could played in male-dominated spheres. She was lucky at that aspect.

Marguerite/Margaret has always enjoyed a steady reputation with French speaking historians. I'm glad that recent TV series as well as the efforts of (mainly female) historians have introduced her a bit more to the English and Spanish speaking world as well. Also, Philip was not a likeable person, but I wish people would not reduce historical people to their faults as a husband/father/brother/son. Even if that was Philip the Fair, or Henry VIII. That was how female leaders tended to get discredited in the past.

    • @cg8397

The ruler's main job is to ensure stability in his realm by securing the succession. Treating the mother of his offspring badly would likely cause trauma and other psychological problems among any children who observed it. Their son Karl/Charles was initially reluctant to marry because he knew about his parents' marital problems and didn't want history repeating itself in his own life. Fortunately, God blessed that son of an unhappy marriage with Isabel of Portugal.

    • @Alcoholmixture
      @Alcoholmixture ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cg8397 There should be a sense of proportiom. Elizabeth I Tudor did not provide "succession", and Catherine II of Russia was not exactly generous to her over-villified husband nor kind to her son-successor, but those things should not overshadow everything else they did as rulers. By the way, the French-Bourguignon tradition (of which Philip was a heir) provided less space of power/influence for the consort, whose role was replaced largely by the chief minister and the chief mistress (later French Bourbon kings governed the court through their mistresses alot). The heirs were entrusted to male tutors who would give them an education that befitted that style of ruling culture. Not that I am a fan of this, but Philip's problems as a husband were not limited to his individual personality. I've read some Belgian historians like Cauchies (who generally sympathize with Philip - the prince who brought peace and prosperity to their country). From their point of view (and most likely Philip's), Juana simply did not fit into the framework of rulership that Philip knew and exercised, and he just struggled to build an alliance with her. But certainly, this would be a problem either in the Holy Roman Empire or in Spain, where other ruling cultures applied.
Aside of that, my view on this is that Juana was by nature was not a politician, who was thrown into a cut-throat world of politicians, who also had strong/dominating personalities. She did not want to be controlled by either Philip or Ferdinand so she tried to rely on one to rein in the other, depending on the situation, but she did not trust them nor plan to work with them as long-term partners . But she did not have a plan nor a frameword of her own either (which would provide a point of bargaining for her men or other potential political partners). Margaret of Austria, when living under the tutelage of his brother, sometimes resisted his plans too. When she was Duchess of Savoy, she pursued an independent policy which was not always compatible with that of Burgundy. But Philip could swallow that and work with her. So like Ferdinand and Charles, even he too could work with women and accept their opinions.

Last year, I watched the first eleven episodes of the season of Korona królów that was about Hedwig of Anjou. After that I didn't find any English subtitles, and my Polish isn't good enough to make sense of the rest. Understanding the phrase "jest król nie królowa" isn't enough.

@@ThomasL58 In that time in Polish Kingdom the queen was only the spouse of the king and held no political power and could not rule. The king held all decisions and power, so Hedwig's father Ludwik made a deal with Polish nobility to name Jadwiga (Hedwig) as an heir and King of Poland and that was the first leading case in our history. Kazimierz the Great (season 1 & 2) the last king of Piast dynasty could not do it for his daughters, because when he was about to die his first two legal daughters were dead and the other ones from the informal relationship were not acknowledged as the legal heirs by the pope. The most tragic/funniest thing was Kazimierz got many children, because infidelity was his "second" name(he was also a bigamist), but none of them could rule because they did not come from the legal marriage.
I found a video with an eng subs that summarises Korona Królów = Hedwig story : th-cam.com/video/lRvmAvO8NQo/w-d-xo.html

The French response initially was Succession does not go through women, which is true in France but not in Brittany or Spain.

I really like how consistent Margaret’s character is in the trilogy. We see Margaret value her family and she was essential in keeping it together. The Habsburgs would be nothing without her.
It’s no wonder her father Maximillian entrusted her to be Governor of the Low Countries while also raising her nieces and nephews.
(Ferdinand would later go to Flanders during his late teens as seen in the show. I assume Margaret must have been responsible in having him learn German since he was raised in Spain. With that education, Ferdinand was able to govern successfully as Archduke of Austria).

In the Netherlands Maximilian had no other choice then to appoint her. Margaret and Philip were always considered as autochthonous as a direct bloodline of Mary (Dutchess of Burgundy); Maximilian was always seen as a foreigner and was always in conflict with the Flemish cities and the Estates. She learned the balance of power in the Netherlands and learned it to Charles V, Filips II did not learned that balance what led to the uprising in 1568

Within days, the foot had become infected, and gangrene set in. Marguerite’s physicians decided that amputation was the only solution. She took several days to prepare for the operation, making her confession, updating her will and writing a letter for Charles.

Her brother Archduke Philip was having extra-marital affairs with many different women, which drove his wife Princess Juana of Aragon crazy. He also abused Juana because he wanted her to sign over her inheritance (she had inherited the throne of Castile from her mother Queen Isabel) to him.
