      The Romans have the widest rosters, the most building options and the best choice of elite troops, but the Seleucids can train legionaries, hoplites and elephants, so they're pretty good too.

    Similar to your tactic here, I've found that, if you follow around your allies' armies with a single unit of infantry, you can attack and besiege the same cities they do, build a single battering ram, then start the fight and leave it o the AI ally to do all the work. It would appear that doing this means that, because you started the fight, you get the city

    I think one of the things you forget when building your economy is when you build a port, you create a trade route. Often, the trade route is to another of YOUR cities, making more money in TWO cities, not just one. You often build roads rather than ports or trading center to gain income...

    I always find the julii never do well as they get so little money compared to the scipii and brutii. They can be getting like 20,000 a turn mid game while julii is still financially struggling

    • @ManyATrueNerd
      @ManyATrueNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Yep, the Julii need to be careful to get money in - they need Illyria and Dalmatia (which is exactly why I stole them immediately), and then they need to stick to the south coasts of France and Spain to get at least some naval trade. They rarely do, and instead get stuck in the worthless central French and Germanic areas. Unquestionably the computer struggles as the Julii.

    • @RogertheRoman
      @RogertheRoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      yeah, I always think the scipii can be the richest and most powerful if they get their act together as most cities they take are large carthaginian coastal cities or Egyptian and can even take southern spain if they're quick enough

      @JL-uq6dq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you can also cheat early and go and attack somewhere like Crete (esp for the archers!) Once you are in an area the AI will give you senate missions to take nearby towns. I always take syracuse lilibaeum and Carthage, then rush for Greece where a swift capture of Crete, Rhodes and Athens can suddenly ramp up your powerbase and earning potential (collossus bonus plus carthage= huge piles of cash)
      Crete is a remarkably good marshaling point for attacks on the Nile delta too- there is no point trailing all the way across the coast from Carthage with all those nasty Pirates, just sweep in one go from crete and blitzkreig the Nile cites- just never autoresolve vs the egyptian charioits!

    Your "helping" in this series has been inspirational for me in my own Brutii campaign. I've now been in Alliance with the Spanish 3 times in 10 turns, because it keeps the other Romans having to drop conflict with them over and over. :D And last play session, I saw my Thracian allies besieging a town that I kind of wanted. So I took a handful of troops from my nearest town, popped them onto ships, and sailed over to besiege the town with them. Then trolled them by starting an assault before they did, dragging them in as the "reinforcements", then allowed them to do most of the fighting before I came in to clean up and take the town for myself. :D Got another army heading off to help the Julii in Spain in similar fashion.

    I am so happy to be seeing someone playing this who knows what he's doing. This is by far the best TW game. I probably have more than a thousand hours in this. It also probably took me more than a thousand hours to notice that you can transfer the retinue guys among generals. And that you can use < and > to rotate a selected formation. I also had the gamey tactic of sounding the rallying horn with the general just before a charge connects. That way he rears his horse, and thus stops, so he is no longer in front of the formation. The rest of his guys keep going.

    I don't know why, but upon seeing the title of this video my thoughts were (in order)
    1. Oh! A new episode of Total War!
    2. A friendly knife in the back? THE PLAN IS FINALLY HAPPENING!
    3. I wonder if the knife is named Steve...

    It can quite often be worth it to buy all the mercenaries in an area even if you don't want some of them, because if you don't then the AI always seems to have the money to buy them before they attack, or between rounds if you're sieging a city. Blocking the AI from collecting more troops is a valuable thing.

    So. I just played some Rome total war. I "helped out" the scipii with Syracuse. They didn't get past the walls, and stood their entire army outside of the gates. The towers shot at them and started killing them. I sped it up and went to the bathroom, when I came back .... literally all of the scipii were dead except the general. He was standing in front of the gates, between the towers and somehow was out of range. He was literally the last person of the last unit left. 1 and my 36 person cavalry unit.
    I ... have no words to describe how hard I laughed

    Almost everything good about Rome was also there in Medieval 2 with a few exceptions. Medieval 2 was objectively the better Total War game, but this is objectively your best series right now so please do more of this.
