    Jon! Some game tips:
    Once your cavalry is already engaged, if you're leaving them in to fight, repeat the attack order while holding ALT. This will cause them to use their secondary weapons if they have them (i.e. Roman Cavalry get swords, Cataphracts get maces), which are more suited to prolonged melee.
    Your dog handlers joined the fight because you double-clicked the attack order. Single-click attack releases the dogs but leaves the handlers where they are; double-click releases them and orders the handlers to charge.

      @lyinarbaeldeth2456 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Trexmaster12 It only works if your cavalry have secondary weapons to use, mind! Generally it's just heavy cavalry who do. And it's still best to do the initial charge with their regular (spear) weapons, because only with the spears do they get a charge bonus.
      The same command (alt + right click) is a shortcut to force any missile unit (or infantry with missiles) to attack in melee regardless of their ammunition status.

  • @lyinarbaeldeth2456
    @lyinarbaeldeth2456 7 ปีที่แล้ว +210

    "That's how Rome: Total War battles work - he was trying to wrap me up on one side, and I was trying to wrap him up on the other." That's also how actual ancient battles worked, and the first to rout really did take massive losses. Another reason I love RTW.
    I also love how epic the battles look on Huge unit scale, but I don't use it myself - the AI simply does not know how to manage city population and it absolutely cripples them, especially the barbarian factions whose basic infantry is 240 strong. I stick on Large unit size to avoid that.

    • @ManyATrueNerd
      @ManyATrueNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      Yep, you can also perfectly recreate Hannibal tactics - stretching a few infantry units really thin, to create a wider line, with the general behind to keep the steady, allowing a smaller infantry force to encircle a larger one. An incredible game.

    • @The56thEmpire
      @The56thEmpire 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I remember a great time I actually did that in Napoleon TW. I set it up at a river crossing with my heavy infantry at the sides across the river. Works like a treat.

    I've finally figured out why I love this series the most. Jon always has informative and entertaining commentary in all his vids and no doubt, he sees little details and nuances that I would never have noticed unless he pointed it out. He generally enjoys most of the games he features and loves many of them, but this one is just different. I loved playing RTW, but I never appreciated it on the level that Jon does and when you observe the kind of affection he has for this game, it really takes a playthrough to a whole new level. Sure, it might take him a couple turns to see an enemy army camping outside one of his major cities or he might regularly fudge his timings during battles, but it's the passion that is so intoxicating. I can genuinely feel his love for the game when he plays it and talks about it. I don't love this series because it's RTW, I love this series because Jon is playing RTW. Well done, Jon!

      idunbeezasmart1 every game jon is very passionate about makes me want to play them, then more often that not i loved those games, since his playthrough of hitman blood money to fallout new vegas and now rome total war, I've played all of them and loved them

      This series actually compelled me to go back to Rome TW and I found a new appreciation for it over playing Rome II or Attila. I admit I copied his strategy though and swept up the coast like he has. I've already taken most of Greece and expanding Eastward. I attribute my improved skills with Jon and his excellent videos. Only problem it is difficult to find time to both play and watch MATN. He's done the same thing for me with Fallout survival, so it's not just this game. My favorite channel by far.

    So, there's 2851 population in Patavium. So about half of those are women, call it 1425. 9% pop growth in 6 months, so 256 people. That roughly makes 345 people per nine months, meaning that there are 345 pregnant woman at the time, or 25% of the female population. Remembering that childbirth was very deadly, and child mortality was high, but that the growth rate should still apply, that means that the percentage should be much higher.
    Either that or people really really like moving to Patavium from other places.

    • @ManyATrueNerd
      @ManyATrueNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      The latter seems more likely - in a world where famine and underpopulation crisis are major threats, it makes sense that a town where food is relatively plentiful, people will naturally migrate there, if only at crisis points when famine kicks off elsewhere.

    • @farmerboy916

    • @enternamehere2222
      @enternamehere2222 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think it's the adult healthy male population given how you can recruit from 3000 citizns to 400 into your armies. If children and women were counted in that number it'd be weird.... the roman army would be made out of women and children then.

    • @silvercomic

    For instance, you showed the way to move people via peasants, but if you have the money for it, buying and disbanding mercenaries adds all of those hired troups to the local town as well.

    I think my favorite thing about this series is just how enthusiastic about this game. Looking at the city view, talking about the little details that I never noticed despite playing for so long, just really enjoyable.
    Also I love that you aren't afraid to abuse the ai of your allies. I don't think I've ever seen a play-through of this game where the player sends a unit to the other two Roman factions in order to follow them around and stop them from getting unfair victories from auto-resolve.

      Straight outta Thermon, crazy motherf*cker named Oppius
      From the faction called Bruttii With Attitudes
      When I'm called off, I got a cretan bow
      Loose the string, and bodies are hauled off

    Did you know that you can make Pontoon Bridges with your ships in narrow straits? For example, if you place a ship between Sicilly and the tip of the "italian boot", you can have your units just walk over.

    Wardog dynamics: Each person gets a wardog or two. As long as the handlers do not die you get all of those war dogs back after the battle. Assuming you keep the handlers safe, they are freely disposable super light harassing troops. IF the handlers do take casulities, the total dogs that respawn after the battle will be scaled down for how many handlers you lost.

    I have learned such a lot of tips from you and I do thank you. It's a while ago that you recorded all of this so maybe my tips are old news. But....regarding the messy hillside battle outside Thermon, just refuse your flanks so that your defensive line better conforms to the shape of the hill. Also, keep one unit of infantry out of the front line and in reserve. It really helps to be able to throw a reserve at a flanking movement. Also, no need to have both of your hoplite units next to each other. You never know where the enemy cavalry might hit. So spread them out a bit. Don't waste Cretan Archer fire on anything other than a weak unit in the enemy's front line where you want to force a break or weaken a flank or at a powerful unit that needs to be weakened before it hits you. Oh, and another thing, while I'm at it..... own the Aegean. Roads are useful but use ships to communicate between the base of Italy and the north of your empire. But seriously, these videos are so much fun. Better than watching Saving Private Ryan. Thanks.

    Now I remember why I always played the Julia, those Hoplites are stupidly strong, even charging into their backs you end up losing tons of men. Against the Gauls you just shoot some flaming arrows and then they break and you run them down.

    I would love to see you play empire total war, I know it's mechanically weak but it's huge scale makes it great for creating interesting historical fiction stories.

      Of those who were burned, some were tied or nailed to stakes, and held still by a hook driven through the throat, so that they could not move the head when the pitch, wax, tallow, and othef inflammable substances were poured boiling over their heads, and set on fire, so that all the unctious matter of the human body flowing down made long, wide furrows in the sand of the theatre. And thus human beings were lighted as torches, and burned as lights for the wicked Romans at night.

    Got fed up waiting so decided to watch your old Total War games...I have been playing these since they came out starting with Shogun. I like it that you never lost the full-on Murray Walker delivery when excited. Great tips come out in this campaign but I do notice you do not use your diplomats as much as I have learned to do to cause wars between your opponents by surrendering land or capturing it and given to another faction.

      With sufficient numbers they can still grind down his troops, and a narrow pass would impede his use of cavalry, which he seems to be better with than the AI, not to mention I think greek cavalry are slightly weaker than roman cavalry.
