I like a mixture of sounds just like this video. It’s interesting to hear your thoughts and inspiration on this particular wallet model but there’s not a need to keep talking once you begin crafting. The music you chose is not distracting and the sped up hammer taps are oddly satisfying. You have great artistic instinct on how to present the video.

I make other people's designs when I'm learning the way to build an item. If I have been making gauntlets but then I need to learn how to make a wallet. I will find a tutorial or buy a pattern and make one to learn the components and intricacies. After I build a few personal ones to practice I will then create my OWN design if I choose to sell them. I learned my painting, beading, sewing, quilting by mimicking but I will never claim someone else's art as my own. The best part of doing a craft is exercising my noodle to see how I can push a boundary in a medium to create something original. In Sumi-e, my specialty, I learned the bamboo, mountains, cherry blossoms, and animals that are normally depicted in this genre, but then noodled and played with how and what cars, urban landscape, music notes, industrial machines would come across in this style of painting. At the moment I'm playing with how tooling a Sumi-e design comes across on leather. I see tons of flowers and Western motifs in tooling and then got excited seeing the medieval dragons and Celtic styles so I thought 🤔 can it be done in Sumi-e.

For those of us that aren’t into leather craft, I enjoy the explanation of the steps. But, I also enjoy the fast-forward once the explanation is given.
Seeing the progression of your wallets, both in new variations and improved version of the original, proves you care for your products. Never copy anyone else’s product, unless you recognize the other crafter in the process.

I think, sharing all these experiences is so important for people who is new in leathercraft. I think all crafters can sell their patterns and they should, it is necessary to grow leathercraft in world. for example I am new in this sector and I am doing for as my hobby. I have limited time to think designs so I am looking for patterns which I can do and like. and these patterns are giving me inspiration ...

Best air tag wallet I've seen. I don't use air tags. Ussually I just get turned off of wallets that have them because of how awkward they look.
I prefer talky videos with maybe some shop sound intermisions or just in the back ground.
As far as making other peoples designs. I may make a copy of a wallet from someone else that looks different or interesting or new. Just so I can expand my skills and learn. But not to sell, I would never manufacture another creators designs to sell, even if they allowed it. I prefer to sell/maufacture my own designs, pride in the work and all that. I may end up selling or giving away the wallet I've made eventually if it doesn't make it into my regular rotation of wallets. But it would be a one off, shop worn sample type thing.

I’m a big fan of taking another design and editing it to make it your own. Practicing and learning using others designs is what makes us better as creators, but I definitely agree that what you sell should be your own.

My daughter's bought my son a keychain and wallet set for air tags for Christmas. It's now mother's Day and I saw what was left of his wallet... So I'm about to build him a new wallet with just a coin pouch to stock the tag in. 😊

I respect your position regarding the design process. I’ve seen some hate in this community when designs are too similar. It’s tough to reinvent the wheel in some instances. Apple suing Samsung over the shape of a phone set a bad precedent, in my opinion. With that said, you’ve created products that other makers have gravitated towards, and you can see it in their designs. I like this wallet a lot. I commented on IG how it’s the perfect solution for guys wearing suit slacks. Keep up the great work! I like the combo of voice-over and music in this video.

Thanks for the videos, they are always informative and entertaining.
I think if someone approaches a crafter and asks them to recreate a design they saw elsewhere, not a problem. If a crafter takes someone else’s design and does nothing to change it and sells it as their own, not cool.
But as you said, having truly original designs can be difficult to achieve, and if you do, than you hope the design is one that people will like and purchase.
You have absolutely achieved that with your designs, well done!

I don’t really see a big issue taking a design and reselling it. I do think you should make it your own and give it an aesthetic that fits within your brand. Just look at the card wallet, a ton of companies make one and they are all similar looking but fit within that companies brand. I do have to say that I haven’t seen a design like this before! I’d buy one I’m constantly losing my wallet around the house or leaving it at a friends house hahaha

This question may be a long shot but what do you think about doing a video about wallet design? I’m a knife maker and it’s taken a long to get where I am but I didn’t get here alone. I’ve had a lot of good people help me to get started.
I am drawn to your wallet design over every other maker I’ve seen but I am really afraid of making wallets so close to your design that it looks like too much of a copy. I really want to avoid that.
I thought you might do a video about wallet design to help some of us getting started in the craft with going from inspiration to original.
I really like your channel and hope you get back into it soon. Thanks.

Awesome video Michael - have fallen in love with your creations over the past year.
I’m not a leatherwork expert but I think the community seems very collaborative when it excludes thing like commercial use. For instance - I have a AirTag in one of your gun deck mini (a little bulky buts it’s been awesome). This is is something I’ve looked for and if I had the ability to make it I totally would. But yeah on a commercial scale I agree it’s tricky.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with using ideas from others to make some extra money. Big companies do it all the time. People pay for the material and labor I put in my leather work, not others ideas or designs. Those are free when they are in the public domain.

I think to some degree, it’s becoming really difficult to make something that isn’t at least similar to something someone else has made. That being said, copying completely is lame, and just plain wrong. Like you mentioned, making one to keep for yourself, sure. But not to sell.
As far as the videos, I’m a big fan of ASMR videos. However, I think a mix of all the styles would be good. A little explanation is great sometimes.
Great videos thus far, and your wallets are awesome. Love my Houbei!

Inspiration is completely different from copying. Every piece of art is at least somewhat influenced/inspired by something else, even if the artist isn’t aware. As long as a design is changed and made something different, then it should be able to be monetized. If it is straight up stolen I would say that’s not cool to profit off of.

  • @Adrian-yd6vu
    @Adrian-yd6vu ปีที่แล้ว

I believe copying someone’s design to profit off of it is very wrong for the artist it can take weeks, months, and even years to perfect a design and to have someone who didn’t put in the time/work n get credit/profit is really f$&!ed up.
