incredible team, level design is what fascinates me the most and heather gibson in an absolute genius, a hero of mine. modern game designers can definitely learn a lot from her work, we need level design like this not the dull (but nice looking) ones we have in most games now
a light placed in the level editor like that would be baked in when they compile the level, though they did manage to add coloured dynamic lighting for flares and torches and such but they don't cast shadows or anything
Do any of you know how was the E3 1998 version of TR3 based on the latest version of TR2'S game engine with all the rest of those animations (crouch, roll while crouching, sprint, and monkey swinging) they gave to Lara?
Tomb Raider 3 is probably my favourite of the first 3 games (I've yet to finish TLR, C & AoD). While I would have preferred going back to the tomb focused environments of Tomb Raider 1, I'm happy that it's more of a return to form after the unnecessary emphasis on clunky, dated and shallow shooting gameplay that heavily plagued Tomb Raider 2. Not to mention better graphics, improved performance (still chugs at times), incredible music, superior lighting, better play control, etc. It's not perfect though. Some levels are ridiculous especially on a first playthrough. Aldwych feels like the designers were having too much fun making it, making for a stage that's complicated enough to be its own adventure game. While overall less artificially frustrating than 2, this is a much harder game that will boil some blood if you're not the patient type. Lastly, use a guide when trying to get all of the secrets because this is a surprisingly buggy game. Most of which are easy to avoid when just casually playing, but the amount is honestly inexcusable for an insanely hyped game in 1998. In spite of these issues, Tomb Raider 3 is a great expansion on the original game whilst also avoiding many of 2's hiccups. As the last of the original games with a more arcadey mindset before going through a bit of overhauling starting with TLR, this was a strong enough cap.
I would definitely have to say 3. I find it the most fun to replay. 1 is my second favourite, though I would say it's the best one critically, and The Last Revelation is superb.
I do understand the criticisms, and I still vividly remember some levels frustrating me quite a bit, but I still enjoyed my time with it. I consider Chronicles and Angel of Darkness the worst ones for a multitude of reasons. Also, I seem to nowadays see more people that either consider 2 or 4 to be the worst of the first four games, and I can understand both sides.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 in my case I'd say TR2 is the best one... It depends on the person. I also liked Tr5 and 6. Every TR has got something "nice" you know? TRC levels from teen Lara were so weird that they were fun! And the Iris levels were cool. And AOD, buggy and bad controls, but love the story, music and some areas...
Yeees they had a big big stress because they were asked to create a Tomb raider game each year. They were upset about that and it was for this reason that Lara was supposed to be dead because they didn't want to re create another game (tomb raider 4 or 5, I didn't remember which one), but.. She survived and no explanation about her supposed death in the other games. But the conceptors of the game had a very high level of stress, tiredness, and anxiety because if the amount of work they had to do.
But their efforts aren't. It looks much better than a cheap game with ps4 graphics. There is a wholesome look to the old games that for them to successfully update it they have to bring their A games.
Class! The original tomb raider games will always be the best.
am 37 now...lara croft and tomb raider is more than a game to me its a LIFE
oh shit the graphics look amazing, cant wait till it comes out
I have a feeling it's gonna be a successful game.

Heather Gibson - The queen of cruel enemy jumpscares
Omg I never knew she was supposed to have a knife in the third game!
4:13 oh, that is pretty incredible putting that good realtime lighting on 97

@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 really? Cool! People said tr3 is the moat difficult one. And the worst or "less good" ones?

poor core design. they have been milked to death
the block design was so bad if you compare this to now. the proportions were so unrealistic. my god im so happy that the games now look so realistic.

Short? God..
Dat damn British English. As hard to understand as playing through the old tomb raider games
