- We knew travelling with Nessie would be cold but the absolutely freezing temperatures caught us off guard a bit so one of the first things we had to do when getting to the Netherlands was stop at a shop to get a new bike rack since our one was causing the leaking at the back window, and I also wanted to buy myself a few more clothes to stay nice and warm. Unfortunately the bike rack wasn't what I had hoped for so we'll have to figure something out for the future - if you've got any ideas let us know in the comments ❤️. After waking up to the water in Nala's bowl being frozen and the weather forecast not looking any warmer, we thought we'd better head for somewhere closer to a city just in case we need anything. Once we started driving we realised just how bad it was, I could barely see anything and with Nessie not having the best lights, we decided we didn't want to drive all day. Instead we put our location up on instagram to see if there was anyone around our area who'd like to meet us... And we were invited with open arms (& paws) by a couple of followers ❤️

We’re Dean & Nala, and we’ve been best friends since December 2018. I was cycling around the world when I heard Nala meowing out for me somewhere in the Bosnian mountains. With no intentions of keeping Nala, I knew i had to save the wee kitten and take her to the vet - but I was well aware of the fact that it might be a bit of a challenge considering I only had a bike. However, despite my concerns, Nala quickly climbed out of the front bag on the bike handle and straight onto my shoulder. Since then, we’ve been travelling the world together. It's a conundrum why anyone would think the opposite.

Thank you to the lovely couple and their cat who took you in! Three cold weather tips from years of experience with living with winter; 1) do NOT set your parking brake in winter. It’s a hard habit to break, but they can freeze easily. Then in the morning it may seem like it releases, but the brakes may still be partially engaged. The brakes burn up or you just get poor mileage and handling without quite knowing why. Just leave it in gear and turn off the engine. If you are on a hill and worried, chock the wheel with a stone. 2) an old credit card makes a great ice scraper if you have nothing else. 3) if icing rain is possible while you’re parked, pull the windshield wipers away from the window so they don’t freeze in place. Much easier to scrape the windscreen later and you’ll have your wipers straight away. Great idea to just use tape to fix the leaking gasket…. Hope it works! Cheers and stay warm!!

It seems he doesnt have heat.
Ive been using a portable propane heater in my camper for 6 years. It's cheaper to use a 10# tank, put it outside and run the hose thru a slightly cracked window.
You'll keep a good oxygen flow that way.

Jackery makes a portable power station that could be used to power a heater for Nessie. It recharges by plugging into Nessie or with solar panels. It would fit in the van.
I was thinking the same thing, Barbara. There are tons of people living full time in their vans now and lots more options these days. If not a full heater, at least an electric heated blanket would certainly help and even the smallest Jackery can handle that. Stay warm, Dean and Nala!🥰🥰

I noticed it and thought at first that someone drew them in the frost on purpose! But then I saw they were tire tracks, as he was driving out.

I think they call it motion sickness . But with you tube I can travel the world. All them green lush hills and quaint little villages. Very beautiful. from 🇬🇧👍 an old cockney gal.

Court it just in the nick of time. living in the mountains in summer I can just see it now. So pretty. In the winter I would die of hypothermia for sure. Have you thought of buying a Little Buddy portable heater? They're used for camping and run off propane. The camp size propane bottles are found anywhere that sells camping equipment. That would keep the inside of the van from freezing up and help to warm up the engine compartment. You could store several bottles in the van so you would always have emergency heat.
The place you were camping around 5:00 is indeed for unloading/loading a car onto the ship.. technically it should always be free incase of an emergency but like you said you would have moved when asked

What a lovely surprise to see your video pop up! I'd forgotten you did post it was coming. So so cold and wonderful that this kind family saw your instagram! You probably talked about it, but is there no kind of heater that would be safe? Many years ago I traveled in a VW bus and remember that we had a heater, like a camping heater. We met a couple from Sweden freezing in their tent and they popped into our van for dinner and to hang out in warmth for a bit. Wonderful to see you and Nala! It's disappointing that new bike rack would not work. I've seen some here in the states that use a different bumper hitch, that seem to work well. Hopefully you can find a different one there that will work. It's soooooo cute that Nala has a kitty friend! So happy to see the new video.

Well if you’re wanting ideas for staying warm camping, asking us Canadians 🇨🇦is probably a good idea. There are several small space heaters that run on a wee solar panel which would probably do you a treat. Then it’s about the right kind of sleeping bag or blankets. There are some tarps you can get to throw over the entire unit to keep moisture down during the night which also helps. We can year round up to -40c for us. A bit frosty but then u get up and go skiing to get warm

Nala is such a beautiful cat, and thank goodness you saved her. I have cats turn up at my door asking for help and food. They seem to know I'll help them. I have two that are rescue cats.
Brrrr! I've slept in various vans over the years and insulation is definitely worth it! A bit of a project but the difference is wonderful. Plus insulated and blackout curtains

I used to have two cats who would travel with me in a large SUV (Chevy Suburban) and camper trailer. The female loved lying in the sun on the dash because my particular model of Suburban has a shallow dished portion there and it was perfect for her. We called it the Kitty Dish. We trained her and her brother to never ever come to the driver's seat, even if we were stopped. They were usually pretty good about staying out of that area of the Suburban. I'd have to remind them once or twice a year to not do that. They mostly liked to sit on the raised boxes and gaze out of the windows. The female loved to sit on the passenger lap and press her nose to the air vents. She was sniffing the air of many places. LOL Her brother was indifferent to traveling but I think she really enjoyed it. She got to see the world AND sit in someone's lap and be petted for 4 to 6 hours at a time. What's not to love?
Also, there is a LOT to be said for a man who is as confident and comfortable with his masculinity that he wears a fleece onesie with zero shame or hesitation. LOL You'd never see an American guy doing that. Too uptight.

I am another person who doesn’t wear socks. My mother in law used to get on my case about it constantly. When she passed away I put a nice cozy pair of socks in her coffin with her.

I love your warm looking coat that makes me think of a cosy Navajo style blanket. There's a "Decathlon" store here in Ottawa too, but l've never been in. I wonder if your Gran crocheted Nala's GORGEOUS blanket, it's a Nala-size version of one l have too, lol!

In spite of a small slice of Dutch heritage, l have unfortunately never been to UK or Europe. But l don't live too far from The Canal where you can see what looks like a million Tulips every spring. The tulips were a gift to Canada from the Queen of the Netherlands for giving her a safe refuge in WWII. They are soooo gorgeous Dean. If you ever come to Ottawa, we have The Tulip Festival *every May* ,ok??😃 Maybe you & Nala could be honorary guests!!😃👍🏻👏🏻🤞🏻
