My father played this game in his home office (I called that room a study). And the only memory I can truly conjure up was watching him play as a miner in what later I would find out was the mountains of the Lost Lands and the city of Delucia. That was at the age of 11. Mother forbade me and my brother to play until she gave in when we got a couple years older. However, we had to play on a family-friendly freeshard. Was fun but it was Age of Shadows when me and my brother started playing and my father stopped truly playing shortly after it's release. Gives testimony to how good Pre-AoS was. The closest I was able to get to that is going to UOHybrid for the old-style UO classic feel. Though I'm not sure Hybrid is the same today as when I tried it way back when.
My father and I played this in the 90s through the early 2000s. I still have my account mostly just to keep all my stuff. I go on for a month or so a year but it remains my all time favorite game.

By what criteria do you mean when you say WoW will never come close to UO? I hope it's not in popularity/player base, because, like the game or not, WoW has every other MMORPG eclipsed in player base, popularity, and profits. It's far bigger than any other MMORPG at their respective peaks of popularity by far. Unless by "it will never come close to UO" you mean according to your personal preferences, that I can understand. But yeah, every other category besides personal opinion/personal tastes, WoW has dominated the charts compared to any other past or present MMORPG, by a fuck ton. Personally, WoW will always be "my UO", as I started WoW as a teen in 04 when it launched, and have many great, old memories of my early days, nostalgia of the simpler times of Vanilla and TBC, playing all weekend with a few of my IRL buddies from school etc. Good times, how I miss them, sigh...

It was closer to real life than any of those other MMOS, and you had to be there to feel the "magic". There were elements in that game that no MMO to this day has managed to recreate, and part of that is because some of those elements were too hardcore for the casual gamer mentalities that exist today. None of us really care about which game had the biggest playerbase. That is a moot point, and its like saying "because more people have played x game vs y game, x game is automatically better than y game." Thats not a valid argument at all. Marc Colen I am scared to transition for that exact reason. I play quite a few old games, I would hate not to be able to. I have been looking at Shroud of the avatar, you should have a look too, if you want a game that will run on win 10. Apparently they have animal taming and bards, but it's mixed on steam, I want to wait for a demo. But if you are missing animal taming, this looks like your best bet.
I came across UO Forever and it's launcher seems to have fixed my problem, I can now play UO again :) I missed so many hours of sleep allready. Hahahaha all worth it I guess.

I haven't played in a long time. Anyone would probably roll me these days... I played from 1997-2001. Then played a couple of player servers for the nostalgia. But for the record, I'd love to see that stun mage against the heal mage or nox mage. The Alchy dexxer has been proven over and over and over again by competent players to be the overall best PvP temp in 1v1 in UO:R. I've been out of the game so long I'm definitely not in the competent category anymore. Also the fencer with hiding is already listed, both a Swords/LJ version and fencing version. I don't like the stun mage as much due to the possible fails. I have had it fail 2-4 times in a row. To each their own. The thing I loved about UO was that it was skill based. Know when to pot, know when to heal, know when to move or interrupt etc... and you'll do ok with a lot of builds. On OSI I was top 3 in points on factions on Lake Superior. Good times. Keep having fun and enjoy the best MMO ever created!
ZMR Gaming Nice dude, I am originally a Great Lakes player 1998 - AoS. I quit right after AoS came out and then a few years later, started finding out about player run shards. I was pretty decent on OSI but once I got to player run, the bar just got raised more and more. There were always 5x tournaments and I won a bunch of them, I used to surprise myself. I kept moving servers until I finally found the one that had the biggest community, and the most nostalgia in terms of pvp mechanics. UO gamers Hybird. It is still going decently till this day. I had some of the best times ever on Hybrid, but the bar for pvp got REALLY high, I mean you had people carrying lightning wands, mana drain wands for reflect breaking, greater heal wands, people using skype and Sallos to recall on to an enemies location mid fight. Syncronized combo drops for instant kills if you or your healers can't time the heal right. You had to have fast reaction time in order to survive getting ganked by groups of 5-6+ people chasing you for the stun and sync. Then you had people carrying magic crafted runic weapons which are extremely powerful, and bola balls to dismount you, kill your mount and put you at a speed disadvantage. Hybrid pvp is optimized and creative. It's very stressful at times. I wish I could show you some videos of my pvp, because I literally have had battles where it was just me vs anywhere between 1 and 10 people. I would run away as much as I needed until I got a chance to dump on someone. Me and my best friend were commandos...we always fought against uneven numbers, 2 vs whoever, and we always at least took someone out. Many times, we never died... even to the most elite/feared players on the shard. No joke, there was one time when we went into a guilds castle and killed like 6/10 of their members because they chose to fight us out rather than ban us. They just kept ressing each other and attacking, so we could never get them all and loot. I got to a point where I would run into big skirmishes and hit people with explosion , purple potion, earthquake. I had the timing down so well that no one could heal it. It was an instant kill. I was very creative and and big gambler when it comes to offensive attacks. Another time my newbie friend has just joined the shard.. a pk was chasing him. I told him where to run to because I was waiting. When they got close, I casted meteor swarm because I knew the pk had reflect up, then I armed a vanq halberd. I told my friend to run behind this house.... when he did, I intercepted the pk with a 60 damage halberd hit and let off the swarm. He dropped instantly. We still laugh about it till this day. There are lots of vids on youtube of good players from hybrid.You should check them out.. Like chadchad, techn9neuog, kchop4tehwpn. They all gave good footage of what its like on Hybrid. Oh yeah, the alchy dexxer is for sure the most OP template in pvp, but if you get a dump off before they can force you to heal and run out of mana, they are definitely an easy kill. Only once you go in defense is when you're screwed, but in the field, I will run until I have the element of surprise and always find a way to kill them, especially 1v1 lolll :).

I heard this game was the best MMORPG ever cause it's like one of the only MMORPG's that actually let you do as you want. In like the sense that it doesn't baby you.
WOW was like that when it first came out, then they changed it to make more noobs and morons feel like they could play without committing hours on end, but I think thats why UO fell off the radar, but still a great game to revisit =) especially after owning the 1-6 ultima's, ultima 8 and playing UO, never played 7 and the expansion if you could call it that.
i use to play on wakoku and sonoma shards i was part of the companion team on sonoma those where fun times especially when i was GM on somona for like 3 weeks
i am here because i was clearing out a very ancient email of mine out of curiosity and boredom and i found where i had signed up for a game called "Peace Country Realms" and it ran on the same client as this game apparently and probably was a mod of this. since then i think the project just died tho. but yeah now im thinking of actually trying the real game cause why not? i love seeing things from so long ago still up and running though :) gosh im on such a nostalgia kick right now.

Nightmare/Dragon combo. i dont know what spellweaving and all that other trash is, so these set ups might not be the best anymore, but in second age these were the optimal set ups for chest hunting, ogre and lich lords, and dragon farming.

+Kevin Barrett The 3 skills i selected at the beginning debated my starting gear, the 7 skills that I chose were my build that I wanted to go with. Most skills intertwine with each other helping you. For instance, Archery and tactics go together. Or Magery and Eval
I have tried playing Ultima Online for a while a loooong time ago, but it seemed somehow choppy to me and I hate choppy. I thought it's my PC or internet connection, but I have recently watched a few UO videos on TH-cam and they all seem kinda "choppy" or "unfluent", including yours. What's the deal with that?
+Lukáš Dohnal They made a client called sallos which makes the game look smoother, and other tweaks, but the "chop" is part of the feel of this game. If you had a solid pc and good connection, that chop doesn't matter. You still move fast but the fps just gives it that "chop" look.
Lukas, this game was designed to host thousands of players online in 1997. The client is dated but the ORIGINAL art that it shipped with is great. All of the shit added since UO:R is ugly as hell.

So the game hasn't changed as much as I had been led to believe.. I grew up playing this game back in the early 2000's and recently I wanted to get back into it, but everything I'd read about how it has changed said its nothing like the early days.

That killed UOgamers. That was a great shard but ruined by that. The 5 players that are still there are literally billionaires in game that are so bored they annihilate anyone that comes along. Further destroying the shard.
How come you don't use any macros or 3rd party helpers? Played UO for 7 years, still one of my favorite games all time and EASILY the best MMO. I am old and slow now with no time or I might check it out again ;)

Hey guys if you like UO then you should check out "Linkrealms" (www.linkrealms.com) it is a new MMO sandbox that has a lot of the old concepts of the original UO (the best version) it is hardcore pvp game with lots of pve content as well. It has player owned areas and is all around a gem. Check it out

Hybrid pvp is optimized and creative. It's very stressful at times.
I wish I could show you some videos of my pvp, because I literally have had battles where it was just me vs anywhere between 1 and 10 people. I would run away as much as I needed until I got a chance to dump on someone. Me and my best friend were commandos...we always fought against uneven numbers, 2 vs whoever, and we always at least took someone out. Many times, we never died... even to the most elite/feared players on the shard. No joke, there was one time when we went into a guilds castle and killed like 6/10 of their members because they chose to fight us out rather than ban us. They just kept ressing each other and attacking, so we could never get them all and loot.
I got to a point where I would run into big skirmishes and hit people with explosion , purple potion, earthquake. I had the timing down so well that no one could heal it. It was an instant kill. I was very creative and and big gambler when it comes to offensive attacks.
Another time my newbie friend has just joined the shard.. a pk was chasing him. I told him where to run to because I was waiting. When they got close, I casted meteor swarm because I knew the pk had reflect up, then I armed a vanq halberd. I told my friend to run behind this house.... when he did, I intercepted the pk with a 60 damage halberd hit and let off the swarm. He dropped instantly. We still laugh about it till this day.
There are lots of vids on youtube of good players from hybrid.You should check them out.. Like chadchad, techn9neuog, kchop4tehwpn. They all gave good footage of what its like on Hybrid.
Oh yeah, the alchy dexxer is for sure the most OP template in pvp, but if you get a dump off before they can force you to heal and run out of mana, they are definitely an easy kill. Only once you go in defense is when you're screwed, but in the field, I will run until I have the element of surprise and always find a way to kill them, especially 1v1 lolll :).

I heard this game was the best MMORPG ever cause it's like one of the only MMORPG's that actually let you do as you want. In like the sense that it doesn't baby you.
WOW was like that when it first came out, then they changed it to make more noobs and morons feel like they could play without committing hours on end, but I think thats why UO fell off the radar, but still a great game to revisit =) especially after owning the 1-6 ultima's, ultima 8 and playing UO, never played 7 and the expansion if you could call it that.
This game is the reason I lost 2 girlfriends 4 friends and a would be wife! And I still miss it(the game) more than them..

i am here because i was clearing out a very ancient email of mine out of curiosity and boredom and i found where i had signed up for a game called "Peace Country Realms" and it ran on the same client as this game apparently and probably was a mod of this. since then i think the project just died tho. but yeah now im thinking of actually trying the real game cause why not?

Great! I play Neverwinter online and i played Archeage online, but Ultima online is the best! Is the father of many sandbox. I think that many mmorpg have basic ispiration to Ultima online! ( Sorry for my english ).

i dont know what spellweaving and all that other trash is, so these set ups might not be the best anymore, but in second age these were the optimal set ups for chest hunting, ogre and lich lords, and dragon farming.

when you create a character it says there are 3 trade skills you cna choose, is that different that the 7 you picked in the begining here?>
+Kevin Barrett The 3 skills i selected at the beginning debated my starting gear, the 7 skills that I chose were my build that I wanted to go with. Most skills intertwine with each other helping you. For instance, Archery and tactics go together. Or Magery and Eval

I have tried playing Ultima Online for a while a loooong time ago, but it seemed somehow choppy to me and I hate choppy. I thought it's my PC or internet connection, but I have recently watched a few UO videos on TH-cam and they all seem kinda "choppy" or "unfluent", including yours. What's the deal with that?

+Lukáš Dohnal They made a client called sallos which makes the game look smoother, and other tweaks, but the "chop" is part of the feel of this game. If you had a solid pc and good connection, that chop doesn't matter. You still move fast but the fps just gives it that "chop" look.
Lukas, this game was designed to host thousands of players online in 1997. The client is dated but the ORIGINAL art that it shipped with is great. All of the shit added since UO:R is ugly as hell.

So the game hasn't changed as much as I had been led to believe..
I grew up playing this game back in the early 2000's and recently I wanted to get back into it, but everything I'd read about how it has changed said its nothing like the early days.
The Laugh Challengers The game has changed quite a bit, at least on EA's servers, using all of the expansions.

Currently, there are 337 users online. That number is about normal. Sure, I've seen more online... but I've got to say, this is still the busiest server I've seen in a while. I'm having fun on it.

That killed UOgamers. That was a great shard but ruined by that. The 5 players that are still there are literally billionaires in game that are so bored they annihilate anyone that comes along. Further destroying the shard.
How come you don't use any macros or 3rd party helpers? Played UO for 7 years, still one of my favorite games all time and EASILY the best MMO. I am old and slow now with no time or I might check it out again ;)

No real 3rd party other than steam for its Macro help. I am for the most part a purest i don't like to use to many addon when i play. Keep it real as possible! You should totally come in and join us! Hey guys if you like UO then you should check out "Linkrealms" (www.linkrealms.com) it is a new MMO sandbox that has a lot of the old concepts of the original UO (the best version) it is hardcore pvp game with lots of pve content as well. It has player owned areas and is all around a gem. Check it out
