Excellent bunker lesson. It’s basically a new swing thought, a concept, and a pretty easy concept at that. Not eight minutes of detailed swing positions that we all already know. Much appreciated.
You are also hitting from an upslope, which certainly makes things easier. Also, a key for me and bunkers is to have an out-to-in swing which has worked wonders for my green side bunker play.
That sand is so nice. I would love if you could do this again on different types of sand. Love from Phoenix, Arizona!
Exactly. This sand is easy to play. I struggle with fluffy sand, always worried about digging or thinning.
It all depends on the type of sand that they have in the traps. My home course basically had ZERO top sand o er almost hard pan dirt. In THAT Instance, we would have to either drive the leading edge into the ground behind the ball or try to pick the ball clean because if you tried to use the bounce of the club I would easily skull it over green...
Sounds like the waist bunkers at our course
we have bunkers like that at my course. We actually can use the putter to get out of some of them. But recently, they've added sad to some and we can play actual bunker shots so I will definitely try this tip next time.
Traps these days aren't well taken care of. Those that have 6 inches of sand are hard for me. I like about an inch of sand.
The bunkers at courses I play are hard like that, and I've learned to just chip with a wedge out of them.
In really hard pan sand, it IS BETTER TO HIT DOWN right behind the ball. That way you don’t bounce the club too soon.
Love your videos. You’re like one of the guys I enjoy playing with. The key point is, you explain everything very clearly and make everything look simple enough for us to understand. Thanks. John
So good 🙌 never thought of it like a driver swing but you are bang on.
I’m also your big fan 🎉
Excellent Matt! I'm sharing with my buddies who refuse to learn. Sand is so easy most of time. Depending on a bad lie.
This box drill has been a game changer for me, cannot thank you enough Mr. Short Game, love your channel ⛳️
Here in canada...most sand traps are concrete nightmares...envious of soft fluffy beach.
I would take a one stroke penalty and get it out of there. As supposed to hitting it long out to the other side of the green and adding another 3 shots to the hole....lol
Great sand shot lesson, thank you most kindly Matt, you are awesome my friend
Maybe you need to play somewhere else. Most in Canada, certainly are NOT trash.
Canada is a really big place 😂
Great video today. I’ve always struggled in the sand. I’m excited to get to the course and try this out!
Love the driver setup analogy but combined with the “ball in box” drill… this is a bunker cheat code gamechanger! 🤩
I’ve learned to get excited when I go into the sand. Because it’s a great time to show off your skills. Mental perception of the shot ahead.
Great vid! MSG lookin’ like Gary Player Jr. in that all black PXG gear!! 😂👍🏻⛳️🔥
I was thinking the exact same thing! Same slender frame and all, looking very sharp
Greenside bunker shots are one of the only shots I’m actually always confident in on the golf course. Not sure why, it’s just a motion/swing I’ve always found stop come natural without thinking much about it. This is sorta the case with chipping in general but particularly out of bunkers I’m quite comfortable. Great advice! Only thing I personally do differently than you in this case and many but not all pros is have a narrow stance. It works for me. It doesn’t always drop but I get it out and on the green 100% of the time.
Man oh man what a great drill and insight on bunker shots that is the best explanation and demo of ever had in my life for bunker play great job!!
I have always been able to hit decent bunker shots. Good tips, I just do them without thinking. Depending on how far it is, the key is deciding on how much sand to take (the box drill).
Moving my sternum forward in the backswing and staying forward has been by far the most effective way for me to play bunker shots
This is really good. I've got to try this driver setup thing. My thought I have is very similar to the box drill, except I pretend the ball is sitting on a pancake and I try to hit the "pancake" out, not the ball. If I think that and commit to it, it comes out every time. I just need to implement the driver setup better and I should be golden.
They use to scare me but my last game I popped a couple out on the first try by using this method you are talking about, I just never thought to think of it being like a driver. Will have to see how I do later today but I just need to remember to try and remove the sand and not the ball . . . :o)
Works great! However, some of the shorter tees won’t stick in the soft sand. I recommend the 2 inch size. Make sure they’re wood though because the plastic ones put holes in your pockets.
Awesome Awesome video! Plus looking good in the all black!
Best bunker feel, if its hard sand, soft swing.. Soft sand, hard swing...
I'll have to give this a shot. Usually, after 4 tries, I just close my eyes turn around and toss the ball over my shoulder. Works every time.😁 Seems like my bunker shots are always 3 feet away from a 6 foot cliff with an overhanging lip.
I love all your videos!
This is so helpful for a more consistent out.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. 😊
Love this concept! would you ever consider for the longer ones using a slightly lower lofted wedge with similar swing? My highest loft is 56, and I also have a 52.
Yet another great video! Thanks!
It looks like the ball is in the center of your stance...not forward.
Thank you so much what a great tip ❤
I was taught to imagine a tee under the ball and your trying to break the tee in half.
Pretty firm sand you have there. Much easier than fluffy, that’s where most people struggle. That firmness stops the club from digging. I would like to see you hit from soft sand. Huge difference.
I guarantee this will help me with bunker shots, because honestly anything that works better than what I've been doing would be a big improvement.
Great video. Going to give this a go
Great explanation ❤
Great video! Thanks MSG!
Come on champ! Please come to South Africa 🇿🇦 and come play some good courses. It would be crazy fun!🎉🎉
Genuise -) thank you for such great instruction
I destroyed a box the other night. OH..the sandbox
You sick Puppy! You beat me to it! 😝
Need to see how you attack short side bunkers? Pin around 10 yards from the ball. Slow swing or short swing causes problems where faster swing launches it.
Great instruction, as usual. Tried it and it works. One question I have is ball position because the camera angle makes it hard to see. For example, at 3:15 the ball appears to be dead center. When you set up with driver, the ball appears to be positioned off your left heal. Can you clarify?
Thank you. You really remind me of Gary Player.
Good information. Follow up when there is bad sand conditions?
Love this video
Start thinking inside the box.
Yeah, that's good. Real Good!
I need the tip on how to get out of the diabolical 8 foot bunker wall Greg Norman decided to build into the 17th on my home course. I almost feel like the best path is to just go backwards to the fairway and not even attempt to left sand/ball well over head height.
Geez, I'm going backwards w/o shame every time if I ended up in that hell pit
Open the face. Open stance till bottom groove is aiming at target. Keep hands low and all the sand 2 inches behind the ball.
Great cheat code. Thanks
I know it's always hard to tell with camera angles, but it looks like the camera is pretty much directly in front of you and it certainly doesn't look like your ball is in front of your stance, off your left heel. It looks like it's almost in the middle of your stance
Not sure that a driver swing is a good analogy for a bunker shot, at least for my mind. I can see commonality with the setup but that is about it. It appeared to me you had the ball close to the center of your stance and not on your left heal although it may have been a camera angle disparity. The problem with the analogy is the swing, release, and lower body movement are completely different. A bunker shot is made in a squatting position to facilitate a swing that is very much shallow and "around your body". The bunker shot has no crossover of the forearms in the release with the face of the club pointing to the sky after ball contact, and your lower body is much more still with a bunker a shot. I do like the box drill with varying the size of the box to affect ball flight and distance. It is very similar to the old recommendation of placing your ball on a dollar bill and trying to enter and exit the sand before and after the dollar bill, essentially splashing out the ball and dollar bill together without contacting either directly with the club. All good food for thought. With that said, if your driving swing works to get the ball off the beach then let the big dog swing take the shot! Thanks for your channel.
Mr. ShortGame is now Mr. PXG? Are you going to be in Scottsdale this weekend for Waste Management? I will and would like to meet you.
COME TO OMNI PGA FRISCO!
You should get a pxg sponsor you seem to like there gear
Light bulb moment, THANKS
legit game changer
Nice.
The box drill is similar to the old "dollar bill". Imagine the president's head on a dollar bill. Place the ball on his head and hit behind and through to get that S.O.B out of office, oh wait, I mean the sand.
Had my wife watch, she now "gets it".
PXG knows good PR
This is good but I never get flat smooth bunker lies in UK . its usually lumpy and halfway up the face. That's the tricky one, this version is simple
Nice
Does it work when you're on an incline or decline in the sand trap?
No talk about the flange, bounce, and how the sand wedge works.
nothing like destroying a good box
Yes, I am the “World’s WORST Bunker Player”
😩
I’m going to try this tomorrow ☝🏻
Well you see...the whole thing with your tips is dependent upon....if there is actually SAND in the bunker...but great video 😅
Love it
Now i just havevto figure out how to setup for my driver
You said put in on your left foot then you had it way back between your feet ?
That sand looked like Hard-Pan, that would be a different shot compared to soft sand, Correct?
Follow the Gary Player tip
There is no way you could play these shots out of the “sand” in our bunkers. If there is sand it’s usually soggy and thick. No finesse needed- just an almighty blast and a hope it doesn’t fly too far over the green.
Instead of "the box" use the "dollar bill"
The ball position you are using is not off your left heel .. it looks to be off the middle ???
If you’re a slicer then just swing normal
I don't open my driver.
Eery golf trainer only tries to confuse you !
It's not the same as driver. Your legs are much wider.
Do you shave your arms?
If you're going to use my bad golf shot videos to inspire your golf tips, you could at least subscribe, Matt! 😜😜😂 Jk!
Like cheating?
Or is cheating?
He thanks "PHG". Really? The company is PXG! How do you screw up like that?
Love your vids, but this time your wrong. Ball position is not same place, feet are not open on driver. And dont hit down on driver I presume.
@@danielfrancoeur8345 never hit down on anything and you’ll thank me for that.
@MrShortGame I have a negative attack angle with every club except driver and putter.
PXG!!!
Some times it takes me 2 or 3 shots to get out of the bunker...they're different bunkers, but some times it takes that many.
I'm better at soft or beach sand than the bunker you're in and worse.
Too much talking.
