- Only 3 months away before we embark on our long awaited RV adventure! As we are living out our new life out in the country, our vehicles have been taking quite a beating. Here is a short how to with Tyler replacing his rear wheel bearing on his Ford Focus.
TOOLS NEEDED:
Cross wrench
Screw driver
Breaker bar
29mm socket
WD-40
Hey brother you gave me confidence in to fix my car I had the bearing replaced just two months ago but the mechanic went out of business so there was no way
My man, you've saved me a lot of money. I didn't know that the drum and bearing come as an assembly and jumped to conclusions. Your video made me feel silly for jumping to conclusions. I'm driving home with my new drums right now.
I’m happy that it worked out for ya!
Inaling that rusty brake dust is key.
Good, well explained video. Wish my drum would come off as well as yours. Still struggling with mine but will try the flat bar trick you used and hope for the best.
Really good video so… I subscribed🎉🙂
Great info.. hahaha Quin, snorting at the end, priceless! Love ya, Lo :)
Thanks Lori!
Thank You for sharing
To mine to a mechanic to get the pump sensor replaced and after I picked it up I had humming noise coming from the rear of my zx3 don't know if them replacing it had anything to do with it but I'm about to do the same thing in hopes of fixing it. It's gotten pretty loud recently lol. Feel like I need ear protection to go over 45😂
Good information!
Thank you!
Don't put anti seize on the lug nuts, it's good and OK to put it on the wheel to drum contact surface. You could although not necessary use loctite blue on the lug nuts to prevent corrosion. Better to have either capped lug nuts or replace them with real chrome throughout lug nuts. In this senario the lug nuts have lost their caps and allow for water intrusion.
Thank you. God bless you, and Jesus loves you! He is the Way!
A 30mm wouldn’t work on mine because those little metal tabs on the nut were more protruded than the ones on the right side so then I got a 32 mm and that was too big so then I took the little metal tabs off and tried the 30mm but then that was too big now I need to go to the store and switch it again for a 29mm even then I’m not sure if it’ll work
For anyone watching this video although interesting that is not nearly enough torque on that bearing bolt. These nuts do not have cotter pins so and especially with this side the nut could come loose and your tire will be somewhere else but not on the car. The bearing itself needs this 173 foot pounds torque as a load to operate correctly or it will wear prematurely. I'm surprised you did not notice the bad wheel bearing long before it got to this point, normally they make a horrendous noise at the first sign of failure.
I don’t know how wise antiseize on lug nuts is. I imagine the wheel coming off on the highway.
Yeah probably not a great idea. I got the job done and I had no issues during the two years I drove it after making this video. I’m not a trained mechanic so don’t do as I do lol.
Hey boss, Is that brake dust keto friendly?
Keto AND vegan friendly
Why are you replacing the whole hub/brake drum and not just the bearing ??
I did not have a bearing press to put the new bearing back into the drum. I live in Wisconsin and everything on the car is very rusty including the drum. Buying the whole drum was the most cost/time effective way for me to get the job done. I’ve replaced the bearing before on the other drum and it was a pain in the butt lol.
The only "improvements" that I would suggest for your DIY repair would be (1) put grease on the spindle and the bearing during installation (2) use a can of brake cleaner to wash away all the fine & unhealthy brake dust powder and (3) wear gloves when doing this job. Other than that, everything is good.
Thank you for your suggestions! I am not a mechanic so any input is appreciated. And tbh the car was kind of a pile of junk so I just needed to get it running for a little longer. I recommend anyone to go to a trained mechanic for any repair.
Are those servo brake shoes or non servo brake shoes
Beats me!
You definitely didn't tighten the bearing nut enough. There's no way you can get 175 ft lbs with a wrench that short. You had to at least rent a torque wrench because tightening the bearing nut to spec is extremely important
I totally Concur. He was probably less then half of the required Torque. Lubricating the spindle and bearing is critical..
You are probably right. I am not a mechanic and I no longer have that vehicle. No problems with it for the two years I drove it after I made the video.
Great info just learn your nuts from your bolts and you don't need a beautiful girlfriend to tighten the lug nuts just lower the jack to get the tire to touch the ground so it holds the tire while you tighten the lugs good Video though
Thank you for your input. My beautiful girlfriend was probably the most entertaining part of the video. Gotta add some flare now and again!
Those are brake shoes not brake pads
Thank you for the correction
Need to Torque the nut to 174 lbs. or bearing will die a premature death. happened to me and had to redo.
Lug nuts on this car 100 foot pounds, do it correctly.
Liberal mechanic lol
